CANON U.S.A. AND RON HOWARD ANNOUNCE PARTNERSHIPS WITH FIVE INSPIRATIONAL DIRECTORS: EVA LONGORIA, JAMIE FOXX, BIZ STONE, GEORGINA CHAPMAN AND JAMES MURPHY

Inspired By Consumer Photos, the Five Celebrities Will Go Behind the Camera and Unveil their Films at the “Project Imaginat10n” Film Festival

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., August 14, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today the first photography-inspired film festival in history, aligning with five influential celebrities from five diverse disciplines who will direct short films under the tutelage of two-time Academy Award® winner Ron Howard. Eva Longoria, Jamie Foxx, Biz Stone, Georgina Chapman and James Murphy have signed on for year two of Canon’s “Long Live Imagination” campaign and the next endeavor, “Project Imaginat10n,” where consumer photographs will inspire Hollywood films.

In 2011, Ron Howard and Canon U.S.A. invited photographers of all levels to submit their most imaginative photographs based on eight elements of storytelling for an unprecedented user-generated contest, “Project Imagin8ion.” The project set out to prove that photography could be used as a creative vehicle, even inspiring a Ron Howard production. Nearly 100,000 photos later, eight photos were selected and influenced an award-winning short film, “when you find me,” directed by Bryce Dallas Howard.

A new exploration of the creative exercise, “Project Imaginat10n,” kicks off today at imagination.usa.canon.com, where consumers will have the chance to submit photos to be narrowed down by Canon, Ron Howard and community voting. The “10” in “Imaginat10n,” represents ten storytelling elements and ten films that will ultimately be produced, five of which will be directed by our creative icons to be showcased at a special Canon “Project Imaginat10n” Film Festival in 2013. The other five film directors will be announced at a later date.

“Last year’s campaign reinforced the endless possibilities of photography, engaging the masses who entered photos at a record shattering pace to inspire a film legend, Ron Howard,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “An award-winning film shot on the new Cinema EOS System was proof that creative collaboration matched with the power of Canon products can achieve great things.”

He added, “This time around we’re setting out to prove Ron Howard’s very own words, that ‘we’re all creative,’ aligning with a diverse group of leaders from different fields including TV, film, fashion, music, technology and business who will each use photography to inspire the screenplay of the short film they direct.”

“‘Project Imaginat10n’ is a genius and organic partnership – linking together people I personally admire and the limitless untapped creativity in everyone,” said Eva Longoria, film and TV actress. “I’m extremely passionate about this opportunity and looking forward to stepping behind the camera.”

“When I saw what Ron Howard was doing last year with Canon, I knew the project had integrity,” said Jamie Foxx, Academy Award® winner. “Ron is a film icon and after he made a cameo in one of my music videos, it was only appropriate that we team up a second time for something truly outstanding.”

“This project is scratching a creative itch I’ve had for a long time – and the chance to work with Ron Howard and Canon is the icing on the cake,” said Biz Stone, Co-Founder of Twitter. “Whether it’s a tweet or a photo, consumers want to share and I’m excited to jump right in.”

“As a fashion designer, I’m constantly inspired by visual elements such as textures, lighting, and colors,” said Georgina Chapman, designer and co-founder of Marchesa. “Photography has always been linked with the fashion industry, so I am looking forward to working with this medium in my first-ever directing endeavor.”

"I like to make things, it doesn't matter what, so this project makes me really happy," said James Murphy, founder of LCD Soundsystem. "My first camera was a Canon AE1-P that I saved up and bought myself in the 80s and I've been a Canon guy ever since. I now have about eight or nine Canon cameras, including a mint 1014XL-S super 8 sound camera that I've had modified for crystal sync! I'm excited to direct something narrative, and really looking forward to working with Ron Howard, learning as much as I can."

“The concept behind ‘Project Imaginat10n’ showcases the power still images can have on narrative storytelling, but more importantly, it demonstrates there are no limits with creativity and sources of inspiration can come from anyone or anything,” said Ron Howard. “It has been a pleasure to partner with Canon on this experiment and I’m thrilled to work with this talented group of new directors – Eva, Jamie, Biz, Georgina and James – to help them on this creative journey.”

“Project Imaginat10n” showcases Canon’s commitment to still and video as well as the amateur and pro. Last year’s film “when you find me” was shot using Canon cameras including the new Cinema EOS System and DSLR cameras and EF lenses. The films directed by Eva Longoria, Jamie Foxx, Biz Stone, Georgina Chapman and James Murphy will also be produced on the Cinema EOS System.

Grey New York, Canon’s agency partner for over thirty years, is developing the creative and digital elements of the multi-phase campaign. Alliance, the activation and public relations division of Grey, is managing the talent partnerships as well as the promotional, event and public relations efforts.

“Project Imaginat10n” Rules

The contest entry period runs from Tuesday, August 14 – Monday, September 24, 2012. To enter, visit imagination.usa.canon.com and follow the on-screen entry instructions. The “Project Imaginat10n” contest will feature ten storytelling themes in which consumers can submit their photos: Setting, Time, Character, Mood, Backstory, Relationship, Goal, Obstacle, The Unknown, and a surprise 10th theme, which will be revealed at a later date. There will be a public vote on the finalists from Tuesday, September 4 – Monday, October 1. With input from the online community, Canon and Ron Howard, the entries will be narrowed down to 91 winners and the five celebrity directors will select ten photos, one per theme, to inspire their films. The films will then be showcased at a special Canon “Project Imaginat10n” Film Festival in 2013.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II and EOS 7D Digital SLR Cameras of Choice for Stunts and Action Work on Set of “Marvel’s The Avengers”

1920 x 1080 HD Recording And 24p Frame Rate

Enable Gripping Point-Of-View Shots for Theatrical Filmmaking

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., May 9, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to announce that its EOS 5D Mark II and 7D Digital SLR cameras have been used on the set of Marvel’s latest movie, “Marvel’s The Avengers,” to capture thrilling point-of-view (POV) action shots that can be seamlessly intercut with footage from the film’s principal 35mm and digital cinematography cameras to heighten the film’s visual impact. “Marvel’s The Avengers” shows an epic confrontation between nightmarish super villains attacking the Earth and the super-heroic team of Iron Man, Captain America, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Hawkeye and Black Widow. Directed by Joss Whedon, the film is the latest and most extraordinary Marvel Studios Super Hero movie to date.

With intense action and visual effects captured by the Canon cameras, “Marvel’s The Avengers” required close-quarter action work with unrepeatable stunts. “The 5D Mark II and the 7D digital SLR cameras produce excellent, cinema-worthy images. They are great for shooting additional angles that give film editors more options for creating powerfully immersive and kaleidoscopic views of action scenes,” explained the film’s cinematographer, Seamus McGarvey.

On the set of “Marvel’s The Avengers,” McGarvey and his crew used five Canon 5D Mark II cameras and two 7D models. Using multiple cameras limited the need to re-shoot complex action scenes, and the affordability and compact size of the cameras enabled the crew to obtain ample coverage by strategically angling them from various vantage points throughout the set. “The cameras’ small size was a major advantage to us. We were able to place them in tight locations that were really close to the big stunts, which would be too risky to do with bigger cameras that would require an operator and two assistants,” McGarvey said. He was able to slide one of the Canon cameras into a sewer grating, while placing another under a pile of debris for a key shot of a car hurtling toward the lens, flipping through the air on fire.

“We are thrilled that the EOS 5D Mark II and 7D Digital SLR cameras were called to action on the set of ‘Marvel’s The Avengers.’ We designed these cameras with versatility and flexibility in mind, and their ability to record beautiful 1920 x 1080 HD video, coupled with their compact size, make them an ideal fit for filmmakers looking to capture tight action shots,” stated Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies and Communications Group, Canon U.S.A.

Compact, lightweight, and compatible with Canon’s wide selection of EF Series lenses, the Canon

5D Mark II and EOS 7D digital SLR cameras are equipped with large Canon CMOS sensors and Canon DIGIC 4 image processors that enable them to record exceptional full 1920 x 1080 HD video at the user-selectable frame rate of 24p (23.976 fps), which is the standard for today’s high-end filmmaking. Additionally, the cameras’ low-light capabilities were of major importance on the set of “Marvel’s the Avengers,” as many of the film’s scenes were shot at night.

CANON U.S.A. PARTNERS WITH LEGENDARY FILMMAKER RON HOWARD FOR YEAR TWO OF THE “LONG LIVE IMAGINATION” CAMPAIGN

The Multi-Platform Campaign Launches May 7, 2012, as an Extension of “Project Imagin8ion,” The First User-Generated Photo Contest in History to Inspire a Hollywood Film

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., May 7, 2012 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, has created a new partnership with two-time Academy Award® winner Ron Howard for year two of the brand campaign, “Long Live Imagination.” The partnership, launching May 7, 2012 with a digital campaign, comes on the heels of Ron Howard and Canon U.S.A.’s highly successful “Project Imagin8ion,” the first user-generated photo contest in history to ultimately inspire a Hollywood short film.

For year two of “Long Live Imagination,” a new television commercial will debut on May 14, 2012 and will showcase the eight winning photographs of “Project Imagin8ion,” teasing “Ron’s Next Project.” Viewers will also be encouraged to visit www.youtube.com/imagination, the updated online hub featuring a personal message from Ron Howard taken from the set of his current film project, Rush. The print campaign will launch on May 28, 2012 and details of the new consumer contest will be revealed in summer 2012.

In May of 2011, Ron Howard and Canon U.S.A. invited photographers of all levels to submit their most imaginative photographs based on a series of movie themes for an unprecedented user-generated contest, “Project Imagin8ion.” The contest entry categories represented eight distinct story-telling elements – like setting, character and goal – that would ultimately shape the film.

After receiving nearly 100,000 submissions, Ron Howard selected eight winning photographs to inspire his next production which was directed by his daughter, Bryce Dallas Howard. “When you find me,” was shot using Canon cameras including the new Cinema EOS System and DSLR cameras and lenses. After the world premiere in November 2011, the film screened at Sundance, South by Southwest and Tribeca film festivals. It was also shown in theaters across the country including the hometowns of the eight local winners. The 30-minute film will make its exclusive television debut – commercial free – on IFC on Monday, May 21 at 8PM, ET/PT.

“I loved the concept behind ‘Project Imagin8ion,’ a very pure experiment that showcased the power of still images on narrative story-telling,” said Ron Howard. “I’m excited about what’s on the horizon as I partner with Canon for year two of this fantastic creative adventure.”

“The success of the ‘Project Imagin8ion’ campaign was unprecedented and we are thrilled to align once again with Ron Howard for the next iteration of this journey,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A.

Grey New York, Canon’s agency partner for over thirty years, is developing the creative and digital elements of the multi-phase campaign. Alliance, the activation and public relations division of Grey, is managing the partnership with Ron Howard as well as the promotional, event and public relations efforts.

Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Cameras Take Moviegoers Deep Into the Daring Operations of Active-Duty U.S. Navy SEALs in Relativity Media’s Act of Valor

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., February 24, 2012 — In an unprecedented blend of real-life heroism and original filmmaking, Act of Valor stars a group of active-duty U.S. Navy SEALs in a film like no other in Hollywood’s history. A fictionalized account of real life Navy SEAL operations, Act of Valor blazes into theatres nationwide on February 24th and features a gripping story that takes audiences on an adrenaline-fueled, edge-of-their-seat journey. This fast-paced, depiction of daring covert operations delivers a thrilling mix of stealthy tension, intense human drama, and sudden fierce combat waged by lethal heroes armed with the world’s best training and firepower. Act of Valor is a Bandito Brothers film produced and directed by Mike “Mouse” McCoy and Scott Waugh and written by Kurt Johnstad. Crucial to capturing the film’s absorbing up-close-and-personal action was its use of lightweight, highly mobile EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR cameras from Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions. As director of photography, and now member of Canon’s Explorer of Light program, Shane Hurlbut explained, the film could not have been made with any other camera system.

“Nothing is as small and nimble as our Canon EOS 5D Mark II camera packages,” said Hurlbut, a member of the American Society of Cinematographers, who has captured moving images using practically every film and video format currently available. “Never have I been so excited by the creative possibilities a camera offers cinematographers.”

“Inventing new perspectives for creative storytelling demands innovative new tools and we are proud to be a part of that process. The Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR camera provides filmmakers with a highly compact and mobile form factor. This camera has sparked our recent introduction of the new Cinema EOS system, our formal entrance into the world of cinema and television production,” noted Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A.

“Because the Canon 5D Mark II is so light weight, we were able to defy conventional motion picture camera physics and capture a high-quality cinematic image, which ultimately looked incredible on a 100-foot theatrical screen,” said Scott Waugh, co-director, Act of Valor.

Game-Changer

The Canon 5D Mark II delivers full 1920 x 1080 HD video recording at user-selectable frame rates of 30 (29.97), 24 (23.976) and 25 fps. Employing a 21.1-megapixel 35mm full-frame Canon-manufactured CMOS sensor measuring 36 x 24 mm, the 5D Mark II also utilizes Canon’s DIGIC 4 image processors, which employ sophisticated digital signal processing to maximize picture quality and provide advanced operational features. HD footage is recorded to universally available CF cards for exceptional workflow convenience. According to Hurlbut, the camera is nothing less than a “game-changer” for motion-picture production.

“I call the Canon 5D Mark II a ‘game-changer’ for several reasons,” Hurlbut elaborated. “The first is its big CMOS sensor’s ability to collect light in widely varying ISOs. It’s very clean up to 1600 ISO. Its light-gathering capability has a nice, very film-like gradient. The 5D Mark II’s sensor also delivers ‘VistaVision’ depth of field. No other digital HD camera out there will deliver that. I find that if you operate at the right f-stop with the 5D Mark II, you get a wonderful, shallow depth of field. You’re also getting skin tones unlike any delivered by other cameras. I don’t think the other manufacturers have put the kind of R&D into their cameras that Canon put into its 5D Mark II. Perhaps the biggest reason why the 5D Mark II is a game changer is because it’s so compact. You can capture perspectives with it that no other camera system can deliver.”

Guerrilla Tactics

Shot on sea, air and land in many locations around the world, Act of Valor owes much of its cinema verité style to the compact size of the Canon 5D Mark II, which enabled Hurlbut and his six-man crew to be nearly as stealthy as the active-duty SEALs the film depicts. The crew was able to transport an eight-camera production package in the overhead bins of airliners and avoid transportation difficulties of shipping larger more sensitive equipment. Once on location, the crew went into what Hurlbut calls “platoon module,” a tactic for self-sufficiency in which they could hand-carry everything they needed, thanks to their compact 5D Mark II cameras and the minimal support and lighting gear required.

The compact size of the Canon 5D Mark II also allowed for a lot of set-ups each day that Hurlbut says would not have been possible with larger camera systems. Hurlbut had his crew outfit their 5D Mark II cameras for different shooting configurations that could be switched at a moment’s notice with accessories from such companies as Redrock Micro and Zacuto.

“More than anything, what I love about the Canon 5D Mark II is that it’s part of a global revolution,” Hurlbut concluded. “The 5D Mark II is causing a paradigm shift in the production industry because it provides film-like quality combined with lightweight operation and amazing mobility. It’s also affordable, so it’s giving a lot of people a voice who’ve never had one before. I think the style of filmmaking that’s going to come out of the use of the 5D Mark II will be a whole, fresh new style that hasn’t even been named yet.”

Canon U.S.A. And Ron Howard Select Eight Winners From 96,362 Photo Entries For 'Project Imagin8ion'

"Project Imagin8ion," the First Hollywood Film in History Inspired by a User-Generated Photo Contest, Will Begin Production in September

NEW YORK, August 4, 2011 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, has collaborated with one of Hollywood's most influential directors, Ron Howard, to select the eight winners of the "Project Imagin8ion" contest from 96,362 submissions. Launched on May 22, photographers of all levels were invited to submit their most imaginative photographs based on a series of eight separate movie themes, each one a core tenet of storytelling, to ultimately inspire Ron Howard's short film. The "Project Imagin8ion" film will be directed by one of today's most versatile and dynamic young talents, Bryce Dallas Howard. The eight winning photographs can now be seen at www.youtube.com/imagination.

The winners chosen span in age from 20 to 44 years old and are from across the country. They include:

Walter Arnold of Hendersonville, N.C., winner in the SETTING category for the photo, "The Final View"

Jen Berry of Los Angeles, winner in the CHARACTER category for the photo, "Dreams"

Mikey L'Heureux of Tarzana, Calif., winner in the MOOD category for the photo, "City Lights"

Brooke Shaden of Canoga Park, Calif., winner in the TIME category for the photo, "Running From Wind"

Alan Michael Martelly of Peachtree City, Ga., winner in the GOAL category for the photo, "My Word"

Lexia Frank of Wesley Chapel, Fla., winner in the RELATIONSHIP category for the photo, "Too Much"

Chris Wehner of Broken Arrow, Okla., winner in the OBSTACLE category for the photo, "Yea, Though I Walk"

Kelly Shipp of Conway, Ark., winner in the category of THE UNKNOWN for the photo, "Where One Day Ends, One Day Begins"

"This project has opened my eyes to the infinite possibilities of tapping into a larger community for creative inspiration," said Ron Howard. "As I selected the photographs, the story started to take shape using these building blocks to drive the tone and narrative possibilities. I was handed this challenge by Canon and I'm very interested to see how this exercise plays out with Bryce now taking charge to direct a film that is very much influenced by these eight photos."

Ron Howard, Bryce Dallas Howard and Freestyle Productions are currently working with the eight winning photos to craft the story, develop the script and produce a short film using Canon DSLR products. The film goes into production in September and will premiere later this year in New York City, where the winners will be invited to a red carpet event and have the opportunity to meet Ron Howard.

"Our goal was to launch a long-term campaign that demonstrates how Canon's technology enables artistry among photographers of all levels, championing the imagination of the masses," said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. "The number of entries has by far surpassed our expectations and we know the finished product, 'A Ron Howard Production,' will be a truly beautiful film, one that would never have been made without the enthusiastic online community."

Grey New York, Canon's agency partner for over thirty years, continues to develop the creative and digital elements of the multiphase campaign that will go beyond the short film. Alliance, the entertainment and lifestyle marketing division of Grey, is managing the partnership with Ron Howard and Bryce Dallas Howard.

Canon USA has announced:

"Captain America: The First Avenger" Action Shots Captured With Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR Cameras

Full 1080P HD Capture, 24p Frame Rate and Canon EF Lenses Provide Compatibility and Creative Options for Movie Production

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., August 1, 2011 – Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging, announced today that the highly anticipated feature film, "Captain America: The First Avenger", used Canon EOS 5D Mark II Digital SLR cameras to capture many of the movie's action shots. Throughout the super hero action picture, the 5D Mark II was used to shoot motion sequences that were seamlessly integrated with the production's 35mm film footage.

More compact and lightweight than traditional motion-picture cameras, the 5D Mark II offers creative advantages such as compatibility with Canon's wide range of high-performance EF lenses, user-selectable frame rates, including 24p (23.976 fps), the standard for motion-picture cinematography, and full 1920 x 1080 HD imagery captured by the camera's high-resolution 21.1-megapixel (36mm by 24mm) Canon CMOS sensor. According to Jonathan Taylor, second unit director/director of photography on "Captain America: The First Avenger", these features made the 5D Mark II an excellent choice for the capture of dramatic POV (point-of-view) action shots.

"The challenge with a lot of action photography is getting the camera in the right position," Taylor noted. "I'm always looking to get the camera into impossible to reach places because those kinds of shots make action sequences much more exciting. Most 35mm motion-picture cameras and even the leading digital cinematography cameras are just too big to get into interesting positions."

Action scenes in "Captain America: The First Avenger" in which Taylor used 5D Mark II cameras for POV shots include a car chase and crash, and a high-speed motorcycle pursuit. The small size of the camera enabled Taylor to mount it on the interiors and exteriors of moving vehicles to capture dramatic action shots. The camera's size also ensured that it was "invisible" to the film cameras shooting the same scene from a distance.

"The thing with action is that the more angles you can shoot, the faster the cuts you can use, and the more energy you get into a sequence," Taylor added.

Previously, the Canon EOS 5D Mark II cameras and EF lenses were used for action shots in the blockbuster hit "Iron Man 2".

In a press release issued today, the United States Golf Association (USGA) has announced the implementation of a near real-time photo delivery system utilizing the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV and Canon WFT-E2 II A Wireless File Transmitter:

Fan Experience On U.S. Open Site Enhanced By New Technology

IBM-Powered PicStream on USOPEN.com to Utilize Canon Wireless File Transmitters

By USGA
June 16, 2011

Far Hills, N.J. – The United States Golf Association (USGA) will employ a new digital user experience for U.S. Open fans that will enable viewing of photographic images at near real-time speeds. PicStream, the IBM-powered photo console on www.USOPEN.com, will feature images created and transmitted from the grounds of Congressional Country Club using Canon wireless file transmitters. It marks the first use of such technology on a major scale at a live sporting event.

“Canon’s wireless transmitters will enable our images to be edited, tagged and delivered to audiences faster than ever before,” said John Mummert, the USGA’s manager of creative services and senior staff photographer. “This is the new transmission standard in the world of sports photography.”

The USGA traditionally uses teams of veteran golf photographers to shoot for USOPEN.com, news media and the USGA Museum. According to Mummert, volunteers had to run photographers’ compact flash cards to the USGA Media Center from far-flung locations on the course at previous championships. Images are captioned, processedand distributed to USOPEN.com and the press from the Media Center. This system failed to deliver the transfer speeds that today’s audience demands, especially given the 100-plus acres that comprise a championship golf course.

“Fans want instant content, and we want to provide it,” Mummert said. “Canon stepped forward with the wireless transmitters, and IBM was able to integrate the technology into their PicStream application to enable near real-time publishing capability. These technologies should enhance the overall fan experience significantly.”

The Canon WFT-E2 II A Wireless File Transmitter chosen for the U.S. Open is a camera-powered compact unit that attaches to the side of the EOS-1D Mark IV camera. The WFT-E2 II A transmits camera images over a wireless local area network (LAN) at up to 492 feet (150 meters). Portable USB modems carried by the photographers will relay images to the USGA Media Center’s tent.

“This technology has been available for a while, but only recently has become something that we are able to use to our advantage,” Mummert noted. “We tested it repeatedly at Congressional Country Club and the transmitting times were exceptional.”

BRYCE DALLAS HOWARD TAPPED AS DIRECTOR OF CANON’S “PROJECT IMAGIN8ION,” A RON HOWARD PRODUCTION

“Project Imagin8ion” is the First Hollywood Film in History Based on Eight Independently Contributed Photographs, Produced by Freestyle in Collaboration with Canon U.S.A.

NEW YORK, N.Y., June 9, 2011 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging, announced today that Bryce Dallas Howard, one of Hollywood’s most versatile and dynamic young talents both on screen and behind the camera, has been invited by Canon and her father Ron Howard to direct his latest film endeavor, “Project Imagin8ion.” The initiative is the first user-generated photo contest to serve as the foundation for a Hollywood short film, which now boasts the A-list team of Bryce Dallas Howard directing and Ron Howard executive producing, in partnership with Francesca Silvestri and Kevin Chinoy of Freestyle, a full-service development and production company.

Launched on May 22nd, “Project Imagin8ion” encourages photographers of all levels to submit photos based on a series of movie themes: Setting, Time, Character, Mood, Relationship, Goal, Obstacle and the Unknown. The contest pulled in over 8,500 photo submissions on the first day alone and aims to foster dialogue between Canon and a community of photography enthusiasts, inspiring everyone to achieve new levels of creativity. Consumers can visit www.youtube.com/imagination to submit photos through June 14th and to vote on the semi-finalists through June 23rd. Throughout the promotion, Ron Howard, Bryce Dallas Howard and Freestyle, with the help of Canon experts and the Project Imagin8ion community, will narrow down the submissions and ultimately select eight winning photos – one from each movie theme category – to become the basis and inspiration for a short film shot with Canon EOS DSLR cameras and lenses.

“It is an honor for me to take part in Canon’s ‘Project Imagin8ion,’ partnering with a brand that is empowering young filmmakers and is at the forefront of technology,” said Bryce Dallas Howard. “It’s an absolutely inspired concept and I’m over the moon to not only direct this film but to work with my father, a true mentor and my personal hero. My hope is that this film will honor the creativity, passion, and artistic integrity that so many people have put into their photographs.”

“I think Bryce is a great choice to helm this film,” said Ron Howard. “She is artistic, compassionate, curious, and loves to think outside the box. There is nothing formulaic about her approach to filmmaking and I believe that she is the perfect director for Canon's creative experiment, given how original it is and how she is part of this digital generation. Bryce has the experience and wherewithal to create a memorable film.”

Script development will not begin until all eight photos are chosen, fostering a new approach to storytelling and filmmaking for the team. Production will take place during the summer and fall, a busy time for the actress/producer who will star on screen this August as “Hilly” in Tate Taylor’s film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett’s “The Help” and as “Rachael” opposite Seth Rogen and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the September release of “50/50.” Also in September of this year, Howard’s producerial debut “Restless,” a film directed by Gus Van Sant will be released. The “Project Imagin8tion” short film will premiere later this year in New York City, with the contest winners in town for a red carpet event where they will have the opportunity to meet the famous father-daughter pair. “Project Imagin8ion” will mark the second time Bryce Dallas Howard has worked with Freestyle, the first being the Reel Moments short film program with Glamour magazine.

Grey New York and Alliance, the entertainment and lifestyle marketing division of Grey, are responsible for the campaign and talent negotiations.
