Research commissioned by Canon U.S.A. uncovers the counterfeit confidence trap in America
MELVILLE, N.Y., May 1, 2014 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, will unveil today the results of a 2013 Anti-Counterfeit Study it commissioned on U.S. consumers’ attitudes and perceptions of counterfeit consumer electronics in the U.S. The study reveals that while counterfeit consumer electronics are a significant concern to U.S. consumers, most seem to be unaware of the full impact and risks of their purchase and use. The study revealed that consumers trust their instincts, but seem to lack the understanding of the possible safety risks and the true long-term costs of counterfeit consumer electronics.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, $145 million worth of counterfeit consumer electronics entered the U.S. in 2013. The research commissioned by Canon reveals, however, that while three out of every four consumers surveyed were concerned about counterfeit consumer electronics, only about one in two believed they can accurately identify counterfeit consumer electronics.
“Most American consumers are unaware of the full risks associated with these potentially dangerous devices. Four in ten of the U.S. consumers surveyed don’t know counterfeit consumer electronics can harm them, and this lack of awareness leads to what Canon calls a ‘Confidence Trap’,” said Chuck Westfall, Technical Advisor, Professional Engineering & Solutions Division, Canon U.S.A, Inc. “Based on the survey, consumers seem overconfident in their ability to spot a fake, and as a result, are at risk of possible harm.”

Based on the survey results, 18 percent of U.S. consumer electronic purchasers surveyed say they have unknowingly purchased counterfeit consumer electronics this past year. Further, the study revealed, overconfident in their abilities, a significant proportion of consumers surveyed fell victim to counterfeit purchases, largely unaware that they could be putting themselves at risk of inferior product performance.
When it comes to purchase drivers, according to this, the majority of consumers surveyed overwhelmingly value product performance, quality, and safety when buying an electronic good. 82 percent of respondents cited product performance and 70 percent said product safety is important to them. It seems that purchasing counterfeits is therefore largely driven by a knowledge gap. For instance, close to half (45 percent) of consumers surveyed believe that a counterfeit product does the job just as well as the genuine product.
“One of the most significant revelations of this Anti-Counterfeit Study is our obligation to take action and educate consumers about the potential health and safety risks of counterfeit consumer electronics,” commented Westfall. “This research indicates that education can largely impact perceptions of counterfeit consumer electronics, and steer consumers away from making uninformed and misguided purchases. After learning about the facts, 71 percent of the U.S. consumers surveyed said that they were less likely to buy them.”
Canon is committed to bridging this education gap for the majority of American consumers who believe more can be done to combat the counterfeit consumer electronics market. Contrary to popular consumer belief, it is not exclusively the job of government, law enforcement or retailers to raise awareness. Prevention lies in the collaboration of all stakeholders and Canon is working to promote the continued education of consumers.
Today, Canon and the New York City College of Technology (City Tech) will host a panel discussion about the potential dangers of counterfeit consumer electronics. Event panelists include representatives from Canon U.S.A, City Tech College, Consumerist.com, U.S. Chamber of Commerece Global Intellectual Property Center and Underwriters Laboratories.
On April 23rd, Canon was also recognized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Global Intellectual Property Center at the 2nd Annual IP Champions Conference in Washington D.C. for its Anti-Counterfeit Consumer Awareness Campaign.

Recent media reports have called attention to the disocovery of a security vulnerability in OpenSSL, an application widely used by network-connected devices and websites that encrypts information to enable secure communication. The vulnerability, known as the Heartbleed Bug, could result in the leak of information that was thought to be secure.
We have been evaluating Canon products equipped with network connectivity* as well as websites directly operated by Canon. At this time, however, we have not found any that are affected by this vulnerability.
We will work to further strengthen security measures to ensure that customers can continue using Canon products and websites with peace of mind.

TOKYO, Japan, April 30, 2014—Canon Inc. today celebrated an impressive lens-manufacturing milestone with the production on April 22, 2014, of the Company's 100-millionth EF-series interchangeable lens for EOS cameras—an EF200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x.
Production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) single-lens reflex cameras began in 1987 at the Company's Utsunomiya Plant, which continues to play a central role in Canon’s lens manufacturing operations. In May 2013, EF lens production surpassed the 90-million-unit mark and now, approximately eleven months later, the Company is commemorating its first-in-the-world achievement of having manufactured 100 million lenses.
Canon's proprietary EF lenses, launched in March 1987 along with the EOS SLR camera system, have continued to evolve since their introduction, leading the industry through the incorporation of a wide range of innovative technologies, including such world's firsts as the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, and a multi-layered diffractive optical (DO) element. In May 2013, aiming to further expand the realm of photographic expression, the Company introduced the EF200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x, the world's first super-telephoto zoom lens with a built-in 1.4x extender that makes possible a 200-560 mm focal length range.
In recent years, in addition to renewing such models as super-telephoto lenses ideal for sports and nature photography along with zoom lenses that offer a bright f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range, Canon has launched multiple entry-class interchangeable lenses equipped with a stepping motor (STM) that delivers smooth and quiet autofocus performance during video recording. The four award-winners are: the EOS 70D digital SLR (DSLR) camera, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II digital compact camera, the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x super-telephoto zoom lens, and Dual Pixel CMOS autofocusing technology.
Best DSLR Advanced: EOS 70D
Named "Best DSLR Advanced" by the TIPA jury, the Canon EOS 70D features an APS-C-size approximately 20.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 5+ image processor, making possible a fast continuous shooting speed of up to approximately 7 frames per second and a maximum standard ISO of 12800,1 which can be extended up to ISO 25600. The camera is also equipped with a 19-point all cross-type AF system. Earning special praise, however, was the EOS 70D's Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which the judges called a "breakthrough." The innovative autofocusing technology makes possible improved tracking capabilities when shooting video to ensure smooth focusing performance similar to that achieved by video camcorders, and fast autofocusing performance when capturing stills during Live View shooting. Other features mentioned by the TIPA jury were the camera's Vari-angle touch-screen 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor II, which offers approximately 1.04-million-dot resolution, and built-in Wi-Fi, which allows image-sharing via CANON iMAGE GATEWAY as well as the transfer and saving of images to a smartphone using the EOS Remote application.2
Best Expert Compact Camera: PowerShot G1 X Mark II
Crowned "Best Expert Compact Camera," Canon's flagship-model PowerShot G1 X Mark II features a 1.5-inch approximately 12.8-megapixel CMOS sensor, a fast f/2.0-f/3.9 lens with 24-120 mm (35 mm film equivalent) 5x optical zoom, and a variety of custom functions and handling features. The TIPA judges noted that the camera offers a host of shooting and recording modes that, in addition to JPEG images, allow users to record 14-bit RAW data, and delivers fast and accurate autofocusing performance through the inclusion of 31 AF points. The G1 X Mark II's Dual Control Rings on the lens barrel let users easily change exposure compensation and other parameter settings while the 3.0-inch tilt-type touch panel LCD provides enhanced composition options. The jury also noted that the camera makes possible Full HD video recording, includes built-in Wi-Fi and built-in NFC (Near Field Communication) for quick and simple pairing to a compatible Android device,3 realizes a focusing range that begins at just 5 cm, and makes available full-time manual focus.
Best Professional DSLR Lens: EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x
The EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x was granted the "Best Professional DSLR Lens" title by the TIPA judges, who highlighted the merits offered by the super-telephoto zoom lens's built-in 1.4x extender, which lets users instantly change the lens's zoom range from 200-400 mm to 280-560 mm with the single flip of a switch.4 The feature is particularly beneficial in shooting situations where it is not possible to quickly change lenses and also enables users to protect their digital SLR camera equipment by not having to expose the camera image sensor and other delicate interior components to the risk of dust or high humidity. The lens incorporates one fluorite lens element and four UD (ultra-low dispersion) lens elements, and employs a 9-blade circular aperture. The Power Focus mode facilitates smooth and quiet focus shifts, an essential feature for filmmaking, while the lens's construction makes it highly resistant to dust and water.
Best Imaging Innovation: CMOS sensor enabling Dual Pixel CMOS AF
Earning TIPA's "Best Imaging Innovation" honors was the CMOS sensor that supports Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS autofocusing technology. Dual Pixel CMOS AF, a phase-difference AF technology on the image sensor plane, employs a CMOS sensor on which all of the effective pixels are able to perform both imaging and phase-difference AF.5 Compared with the AF systems employed in previous EOS-series models, Dual Pixel CMOS AF makes possible dramatically improved AF performance during Live View shooting and when shooting video. The jury noted that the technology achieves "greatly enhanced" AF performance in terms of speed and smoothness because Live View shooting can be used in a manner similar to using the camera's viewfinder. Featured in the EOS 70D digital SLR camera, Dual Pixel CMOS AF supports outstanding AF performance with 103 models6 of Canon EF lenses (including earlier models and models available outside of Japan). The TIPA judges also expressed their expectations that Dual Pixel CMOS AF would “allow for future development of even more responsive image capture and processing capabilities."
MELVILLE, N.Y., April 2, 2014 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, shared today that its parent company, Canon Inc., announced a software upgrade for the EOS C500 digital cinema camera (launched in October 2012), part of Canon’s Cinema EOS System lineup of professional digital cinematography products, that will enable users to more efficiently on-set production workflows. The Company plans to offer the free-of-charge Cinema RAW Development software upgrade* starting in October 2014.
The new Cinema RAW Development 1.3 software, currently under development, will deliver enhanced shooting workflows, including the on-set playback and confirmation of 4K RAW video, when using the EOS C500 camera.
Through collaboration with Intel, Cinema RAW Development 1.3 will deliver improved performance using a beta version of the Intel Media SDK 2014 Professional Camera Pack, making possible faster development of 4K Cinema RAW data when using a PC equipped with Intel Iris Pro graphics. Canon’s software upgrade will support greater workflow efficiencies for 4K RAW data by enabling real-time playback with playback speeds of up to 24 frames per second (fps). To date, previewing 4K RAW video footage on a notebook PC and other compact computer devices had been difficult because of the slow fps rate and the need for tremendous processing power, which was only available with a workstation PC. Now, with a combination of upgrades to Canon’s Cinema RAW Development 1.3 software, compatible with the Intel Media SDK 2014 Professional Camera Pack, and a PC with Intel Iris Pro graphics, Canon users will be able to more quickly preview their 4K video footage while on a shoot.

Canon, a company that has continuously produced cameras since its founding in 1937, began producing and marketing digital cameras in the mid 1990s. In 1995, when film cameras were still the norm, Canon launched its first digital camera, the professional-model EOS DCS 3* digital SLR camera.
At the time, compact cameras were leading the digital shift within the camera industry. In 1996, Canon announced its market entry with the introduction of the PowerShot 600, the Company's first compact digital camera. In 2000, amid the market's rapid growth, Canon launched the IXY DIGITAL (PowerShot S100 or DIGITAL IXUS in markets outside of Japan), featuring a ground-breaking compact, stylish body design that set the trend for compact digital cameras.
Subsequent models released by the Company reflected the diverse evolution of compact digital cameras with models becoming increasingly compact and lightweight, achieving higher sensitivity, incorporating more enhanced automatic functions, and realizing greater network connectivity. EOS C300 Dual Pixel CMOS AF Feature Upgrade
Originally introduced in the Canon EOS 70D Digital SLR camera, Canon Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology is designed to provide continuous autofocus when shooting in single operator, or run-and-gun set-ups like documentaries, weddings, events, or electronic news gathering (ENG). When used in combination with an STM lens, this technology allows for the capture of high quality video without the interruption of noise by the focusing motor.
Dual Pixel CMOS AF is an innovative image-plane phase-detection AF technology that employs a CMOS sensor on which all of the effective pixels are able to perform both imaging and phase-detection AF simultaneously. Although camera operators can still focus manually, this new optional feature upgrade can enable smooth continuous AF with phase detection, a particularly useful feature when shooting with a small crew or single-operator run-and-gun filming and cinéma vérité style shoots.
The optional Dual Pixel CMOS AF feature upgrade for the EOS C300 Cinema camera supports continuous AF with all compatible Canon EF series lenses when shooting subjects positioned in the center of the imaging area. The technology involves complementary use of a contrast signal to achieve advanced autofocus stability that helps reduce the occurrence of loss of focus on a subject. Also included is an AF Lock which allows users to lock a focus point once AF is achieved and recompose the shot. Canon Dual Pixel CMOS AF also nearly doubles the speed of the EOS C300 Cinema camera's One-Shot AF function, which enables a DP to focus on a subject located at the center of the screen with the push of a button, a feature that is currently supported on 104 Canon EF lens modelsi.

Canon RC-V100 Remote Control
The Canon RC-V100 Remote Control is designed to respond to a diverse array of production needs requiring remote camera operation. The RC-V100 Remote Control enables users to remotely control main camera functions and is compatible with the XF Series professional HD camcorders and Canon's Cinema EOS C500, Cinema EOS C300 and Cinema EOS C100 cameras. It allows users to remotely control a wide variety of functions built into the cameras, as well as adjust and set various controls, such as exposure and white balance.
The RC-V100 Remote Control is expected to be available in June 2014 at a suggested retail price of $2,999.
Peripheral Illumination Correction
This firmware performance update adds two additional Canon lenses to the list of lens models that maintain even illumination across an image plane, and virtually eliminates vignetting when used in combination with the EOS C500 and EOS C300 Cinema cameras, and the EOS C100 Digital Video Camera. This latest update adds the CN-E35mm T1.5 L F Cinema prime lens and the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM telephoto zoom lens to the seven other Canon CN-E Series Cinema Lenses that share this performance advantage, including the CN-E15.5-47mm and CN-E30-105mm T2.8 L S compact Cinema zooms, and the 14mm, 24mm, 50mm, 85mm, and 135mm Canon CN-E Cinema prime lenses. Fourteen other Canon EF-Series photographic lenses also deliver Peripheral Illumination Correction in combination with these cameras.
The EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM telephoto zoom lens offers high magnification in a compact and lightweight telephoto zoom lens with an Optical Image Stabilizer for up to 3.5* equivalent stops for shake correction. The lens' ultra-quiet stepping motor and focus mechanism support the Canon Dual Pixel CMOS AF autofocus optional upgrade for the Cinema EOS C300 and EOS C100 cameras, providing smooth, continuous autofocusing during video shooting on upgraded models.
EOS C100 Camera Continuous Recording Function Firmware Update
Designed for the capture of crucial, unpredictable scenes during wedding/event, documentary, news, or wildlife filming, the Continuous Recording Function firmware update for the EOS C100 Digital Video Camera enables videographers to insert metadata markers identifying crucial scenes and moments in their footage while continuously recording to the memory capacity. These markers — for both "in" and "out" points — can be set with the press of a button without interrupting the recording process. These markers are identified in metadata as separate "shots," and are simultaneously recorded to both SD card slots of the EOS C100 camera.

TOKYO, February 6, 2014—Canon Inc. announced today the achievement of a camera-manufacturing milestone as combined production of the company's film and digital EOS-series interchangeable-lens cameras surpassed the 70-million mark on February 5.
Production of Canon EOS SLR cameras began in 1987 at Canon Inc.'s Fukushima Plant (now Fukushima Canon Inc.) with the EOS 650, later moving to such production bases as Oita Canon Inc. and Canon Inc., Taiwan. Following the spread of digital SLR cameras in the early 2000s, production rapidly increased, surpassing the 60-million-unit mark in October 2012 and now, approximately one year and four months later, reaching the 70-million-unit threshold.
EOS, which stands for "Electro Optical System," also carries the name of the Greek goddess of the dawn. Introduced in March 1987 as a new generation of AF SLR cameras, EOS cameras were the world's first to incorporate an electronic mount system enabling complete electronic control not only between the lens and body, but throughout the entire camera system.
Based on the key concepts of high speed and ease of use, EOS-series cameras, including the top-of-the-line professional-model EOS-1 released in 1989 and the popular compact, lightweight EOS Kiss (EOS Rebel XS or EOS 500 in other regions) introduced in 1993, actively incorporate innovative technologies and have gained acceptance from a wide range of users. TOKYO, Japan, December 2, 2013—Canon Inc. announced today that an ultra-high-sensitivity 4K camera was used to successfully capture video of the comet ISON from the International Space Station at approximately 7:08 p.m. JST on November 23, 2013. Canon technology contributed to this world's-first achievement as video production equipment from Canon's Cinema EOS System was used to record the astronomical phenomenon.
Discovered in September 2012, ISON was unique in that, among the many large comets that have passed through the solar system in recent years, none had traveled so close to the sun. Accordingly, expectations were high that the “sungrazing” ISON would provide earthbound stargazers with a rare performance that would not likely be repeated anytime soon. After the video was shot, however, the comet is believed to have largely broken up and evaporated, meaning that it will no longer be visible in the night sky.
The footage of the comet ISON was shot from the vantage point of outer space, which is not subject to atmospheric fluctuation, enabling the capture of clear video images that would not have been possible if shot from Earth. As a result, the video will likely prove of high value to the scientific community.
The Canon video production equipment taken on the mission, all from the company's Cinema EOS System lineup of professional digital cinematography products, comprised the EOS C500 PL professional cinema camera (launched in October 2012) and two EF Cinema Lenses: the CN-E15.5-47mm T2.8 L SP (launched in December 2012) and the CN-E30-105mm T2.8 L SP (launched in October 2012). All three support 4K image resolution and the EOS C500 PL makes possible exceptional high-sensitivity imaging performance that facilitates the capture of usable footage even in low-light conditions.
The actual EOS C500 PL used on board the International Space Station underwent special modifications to further boost sensitivity and to enable the camera to withstand the rigors of shooting in space.

The DP-V3010 4K Reference Display features a 16:10 aspect ratio for the display of video signal information essential to VFX creation. With a tightly packed "pixel pitch" of 157.5æm, the Canon DP-V3010 4K Display provides high-accuracy tonal gradations between darkest and brightest areas, with 1024 shades in each color channel. The technology enabling such performance is a new and proprietary display engine developed by Canon that helps maximize color accuracy and brightness uniformity. The actual panel employed by the DP-V3010 4K Display is an IPS (in-plane switching) LCD with full array RGB LED scanning backlight technology that delivers excellent color accuracy, and crisp video imagery without the perception of motion blurring between frames. By featuring an IPS LCD panel with polarizing and filtering film layers to prevent changes in color and contrast, the DP-V3010 4K Reference Display enables image viewing within a wide viewing angle, top to bottom and left to right.
The Canon DP-V3010 4K Reference Display is compatible with the five major color gamut standards - SMPTE-C, EBU, ITU-R BT.709, DCI, and AdobeRGB - as well as conforming to DCI standards for 4K display. These DCI standards include a 2000:1 contrast ratio, which the DP-V3010 4K Reference Display evidences in its faithful reproduction of detail in the shadows and accurate highlights. This high contrast accuracy is essential for critical assessment and mastering of high dynamic range cinematic imagery.
Also supported by the Canon DP-V3010 4K Reference Display is the ASC CDL (American Society of Cinematographers Color Decision List) format. The display controller provided with the DP-V3010 4K Display includes a dedicated CDL button. Color settings made at the shooting location can be stored on a USB flash drive and imported into the user's color-grading system, which can then relay color correction parameters directly to the DP-V3010 4K Display in the ASC CDL format using slope, offset, power, and saturation parameter adjustments to the overall RGB image and/or separately to the individual R, G, and B channels.
The importation of LUT (Look Up Table) data created by third-party color-grading systems is also supported by the DP-V3010 4K Reference Display. The Display allows both 1D and 3D LUTs to be easily imported by operating the menus of the unit itself. This enables accurate color matching between displays and the ability to import customized "looks" created in third-party applications. In this way, the unique colors and gradations intended by producers can be easily reproduced.
Ready to support the wide dynamic range of Canon Log gamma video data recorded by the popular Canon EOS C500 and EOS C300 Cinema cameras, the Canon DP-V3010 4K Reference Display also comes pre-installed with the Cinema EOS Canon Log viewing LUT allowing those cameras to be integrated with the DP-V3010 4K Display for linear conversion and display in real time. Furthermore, using 1D/3D-LUT data, the display will be able to provide support for ACESproxy output from Canon's EOS C500 digital cinema camera.
A wide variety of the full HD video production format resolutions, typically used for TV dramas, commercials and other TV content, can also easily be displayed by the new Canon DP-V3010 4K Reference Display. To accommodate HD formats, the DP-V3010 Display offers upscaling modes offering smooth and accurate rendering up to 4K resolution of DCI 4K (in up to 12 bit 4:4:4 color), 2K, 1080p, 1080i and 720p. Inputs include 3G-SDI, HD-SDI and DisplayPort connectors for compatibility within many different production, post and VFX workflow environments.
Calibration and Convenience
Each Canon DP-V3010 4K Reference Display undergoes high-precision calibration before shipment to help ensure high color uniformity between all units. Color accuracy is further improved by the Canon DP-V3010 4K Display's control system, which continuously monitors internal conditions of the display which might affect color, uniformity and performance accuracy, like heat or aging of internal components and make corrections to help ensure long-term image stability and exceptional color consistency.
External calibration of the Canon DP-V3010 4K Reference Display can be performed without the need for a dedicated PC application through the use of a third-party spectroradiometer. Use of such an external sensor allows users of the DP-V3010 Display to maintain factory calibration settings as well as help adjustment for specific display applications or account for variations in ambient lighting.
The DP-V3010 Display features an easy-to-navigate on-screen display that can be controlled using the included display controller. Built-in carrying handles allow the display to be easily transported and positioned on top of a desk or a counter, or attached to a VESA-compliant bracket for easy wall or rack mounting. The accompanying display controller is designed to be used as both a desktop control device or to be rack-mounted for easy integration into suites, control rooms or mobile vehicle applications, such as HD sports production trucks.
Markers, time code display and test patterns are provided within the Canon DP-V3010 4K Reference Display. A variety of markers (aspect, safety zone, grid, and center) and test patterns (pluge, grayscale [20%], white, five-step, ramp, color bars, and black) are also built into the DP-V3010 Display.

New EOS C100 Camera Feature Upgrade Offers Outstanding Continuous AF Performance for Documentary, Electronic News Gathering, and Small-Crew Productions
MELVILLE, N.Y., November 5, 2013 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today that the Company will offer an optional feature upgrade for the EOS C100 Digital Video camera which will support innovative Dual Pixel CMOS AF autofocus technology, enabling continuous autofocusing with Canon’s entire EF lens lineup. This optional upgrade is expected to be available in February 2014 for a cost of $500.00 and will require the EOS C100 camera body to be shipped to a Canon service center.
The Canon feature upgrade will provide the EOS C100 camera (first introduced in November 2012) with greatly improved autofocus (AF) functionality made possible through Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology. First employed in the EOS 70D digital SLR camera launched in August 2013, the innovative new AF technology helps facilitate greater shooting efficiency across a variety of shooting situations. For users that work with moving subjects, this optional Dual Pixel CMOS AF upgrade for the EOS C100 camera will allow for a smoother, more natural autofocus that can be particularly useful for video markets like documentary, sports, event and wildlife.
Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF makes use of the Company’s proprietary CMOS sensor technology with a new structure that both captures light and performs phase-difference detection autofocus. While focusing on the EOS C100 camera is primarily performed manually, the feature upgrade will enable smooth continuous AF, a capability that can be particularly beneficial when operating with a small production crew, electronic news gathering, or run-and-gun documentary-style shoots.
The Dual Pixel CMOS AF functionality offered through the feature upgrade supports continuous AF with all compatible Canon EF lenses for subjects positioned in the center of the imaging area. The complementary use of the contrast signal achieves advanced AF stability that helps reduce the occurrence of image blur. Also, the inclusion of an AF Lock function contributes to expanded shooting flexibility through focus preset, which allows users to set a desired focus distance in advance, and the ability to alter the photographing range or composition after establishing focus.
This optional feature upgrade increases the speed of the EOS C100 camera’s One-Shot AF function by approximately two-times, which enables users to focus on a subject located at the center of the screen with the push of a button, a feature that is currently supported on 104 Canon EF lens models.

Following the premiere, screenings will be held in Los Angeles, CA hosted by Bryce Dallas Howard, the first graduating director of Canon's Project Imagin8ion as well as in Brooklyn, NY hosted by James Murphy, a celebrity director for Project Imaginat10n. Proving Ron Howard's words "we're all creative," five innovative celebrities took to the director's chair - Jamie Foxx (Academy Award winner), Eva Longoria (Golden Globe nominated and SAG Award winning actress), Georgina Chapman (designer and co-founder of Marchesa), James Murphy (founder of LCD SOUNDSYSTEM) and Biz Stone (co-founder of Twitter). Canon has just announed a new firmware update for the Canon EOS-1D X and 1D C DSLR cameras. The 1D X will finally get a feature Bryan and I have been requesting for ages - exposure compensation with Auto ISO (in manual mode) - along with several other AF enhancements.
I recently asked Chuck Westfall, Technical Advisor for Canon, "As the 1D X and 5D III autofocus systems are so similar, does Canon plan on implementing these new AF features in the 5D III as well?" Chuck's response was as diplomatic as it was inconclusive - "Canon Japan hasn't made a decision on that yet."
I guess we'll just have to wait and see. If nothing else, I'd love to get Exposure Compensation with Auto ISO on my 5D III. [Sean]

Canon Launches RUSH: The Photo Contest, a Photography Challenge with Time Parameters

Upcoming Facility Provides Additional U.S.-Based Customer Service; Creates Job Opportunities in New Mexico
MELVILLE, N.Y., October 7, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today that Canon Information Technology Services, Inc. (CITS), its wholly owned subsidiary, will open a customer support center at 4041 Jefferson Plaza NE in Albuquerque, N.M. This center will provide additional customer service support and technical capabilities for Canon customers.
The 33,682-square-foot Albuquerque center will support small office and consumer imaging products, including digital cameras, camcorders, printers, and copiers. The new location will also support Canon's growing professional printing, cinema, and eCommerce customers. It is anticipated that the support center will create at least 150 call center positions over a three-year period. Hiring is expected to commence in early 2014, with operations anticipated to begin in April 2014.

MELVILLE, N.Y., September 19, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, two-time Academy Award winner Ron Howard, and Bryce Dallas Howard, one of Hollywood's most versatile actresses and director of the 2011 short film "when you find me," have announced the five winning consumer directors of the "Project Imaginat10n" film contest, which gave filmmakers of all skill levels an opportunity to showcase their creativity and storytelling abilities. Five celebrity directors also took part in the same creative exercise: Eva Longoria (film and TV actress), Jamie Foxx (Academy Award winner), Biz Stone (co-founder of Twitter), Georgina Chapman (designer and co-founder of Marchesa) and James Murphy (founder of LCD SOUNDSYSTEM).
The challenge was to create a short film inspired by ten crowdsourced photos in ten storytelling themes: Character, Mood, Goal, Backstory, Setting, Obstacle, Relationship, The Unknown, Time and Discovery. The Discovery photo, "Discovering limits," was selected by Ron Howard and served as the thematic tie in each film. MELVILLE, N.Y., May 29, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced its parent company, Canon Inc., has reached a new lens-manufacturing milestone with the production of its 90-millionth EF-series interchangeable lens for EOS cameras. Canon turned out its 90-millionth lens, an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (released in September 2012), on May 23, 2013.
The production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) single-lens reflex film cameras began in 1987 at the Company's Utsunomiya Plant. Since that time, supported by a wide range of users, demand has steadily increased and production has expanded. Today, Canon produces EF lenses at four of the Company's manufacturing bases, including Canon Inc., Taiwan; Canon Opto (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.; and Oita Canon Inc. in southern Japan.
EF lens production surpassed the 10-million-unit mark in 1995, doubled to 20 million lenses in 2001, and went on to reach 30 million units in 2006 and 40 million units in 2008. Afterward, due to the rapid spread of EOS digital SLR cameras, production of EF lenses gained further momentum, crossing the 50-million-unit threshold in 2009, reaching 60 million units in January 2011, and hitting the 70-million-unit mark in October of the same year. In August 2012, lens production reached 80 million units and now, a little over nine months later, the company commemorates its latest manufacturing milestone of 90 million lenses.

Canon has just published a promo video for the new PowerShot N. While the camera looks interesting, I can't help but wonder if the "shutter ring" will be a welcomed change compared to a traditional shutter button.

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 4, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the opening of its service and support center in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey. This facility is located just across the George Washington Bridge outside of New York City, and will provide comprehensive product repair and maintenance services for the growing customer base of Canon's professional imaging products.
The Ridgefield Park on-site repair operations include state-of-the-art camera and lens dark rooms, Canon's most advanced adjustment and calibration equipment, spare parts inventory, and an experienced repair staff that will work to quickly return Canon's professional products to their original factory condition and operation. This new facility, available exclusively for Platinum and Gold level members of Canon's Professional Services (CPS) program, including owners of Cinema EOS products, and broadcast lens clients, confirms Canon U.S.A.'s commitment to providing personalized and local service and support to imaging professionals in the New York/New Jersey metro region.
This facility is Canon's second service facility exclusively available to professional clients, joining the Canon Hollywood Professional Technology & Support Center that debuted in the heart of Hollywood, CA, early last year. Both facilities provide factory quality repair and maintenance service for Canon's extensive lineup of professional-grade cameras, including EOS Digital SLR cameras, Cinema EOS cameras, and high-definition camcorders. All of Canon's professional lenses, including EF series photography lenses, Cinema lenses, and broadcast and studio lenses are also supported at this new facility.

Additional camera and lens service facilities for both professional and consumer clients are located in Jamesburg, N.J., Irvine, C.A., and Newport News, V.A. Each of these facilities operates with the same Canon speed and quality that is unrivaled in the industry. By the end of the year, Canon plans to further expand its local service center presence to the Midwest with the opening of a new service and support facility to support imaging professionals in the Chicago market.
