From Canon USA:

Introducing Canon’s First Photographer Matching Service, Plus a Photo Culling Plug-in for Adobe Lightroom Classic

MELVILLE, NY, January 7, 2020 – Helping photographers boost their business and productivity, while helping to build trust and customer confidence, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the beta version of the Company’s first photographer matching service Image Connect, making the process of finding and hiring a photographer that you can trust that much simpler. The company also launched a Photo Culling plug-in for Adobe Lightroom Classic to support the workflow needs of photographers.

“With a deep rooted heritage in imaging expertise, our company has built a trusted reputation in providing tools and services to professional photographers that help better their craft and support them in building their business with confidence,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Services, such as Image Connect, will provide professional photographers with a great value proposition, offering reliability and peace of mind for their customers that can in turn increase their business opportunities as well as their productivity.”

Image Connect

Image Connect is a new photographer matching service, offered through the RAISE photo community platform, that connects customers with professional photographers, so that the customer can focus on the moment while the photographer captures it. The beta version of the service will be available in a limited number of markets in Connecticut, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas. Image Connect will initially focus on family events like newborn portraits, birthday parties, family portraits, religious events, and engagements.

Here is how Image Connect will work:

  • Through the platform, customers can provide basic details for the job, such as event type, location, and date
  • Once photographers are matched with the customer through the platform, customers review photographer profiles and invite those they like to bid on the job
  • Photographers create an offer which allows them to set their own price (rather than adhering to standardized pricing) and allows them to communicate their rates and value to customers
  • Once an offer is accepted, the job is booked through the platform
  • Following the event, images are delivered electronically to the customers through a Canon customer portal

This service will also be brand agnostic, opening up the portal for all photographers to use no matter the brand of equipment.

Photo Culling Plug-in

Powered by the Canon Computer Vision AI engine, the new Photo Culling Plugin for Adobe Lightroom Classic can save photographers countless hours in post-production by using technical models to cull for image sharpness, noise, exposure, contrast, closed eyes, and red eyes. Analyzed images will be flagged with different colored flags to remain true to the native Adobe Lightroom Classic experience*. The photographer also has the ability to customize the settings within each technical model to remain in complete control. The Photo Culling plug-in will be available exclusively on the Adobe Exchange App Marketplace for a monthly subscription.

Both services are currently scheduled to be available in Q1 2020.

Canon Map Utility Being Discontinued, Replaced by Canon GPS Log File Utility https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=31796&Title=Canon-Map-Utility-Being-Discontinued-Replaced-by-Canon-GPS-Log-File-Utility

If you have used Canon's Map Utility lately, you've likely seen the following warning message (thanks Henri):

"Map displaying service of Map Utility will be terminated by the end of Oct. 2019."
We reached out to Canon Technical Advisor Rudy Winston to ask what prompted the change. While the reason behind the change remains unclear, Rudy did let us know that Canon's Map Utility is reaching the end of its product life cycle and another Canon-developed program has taken its place, albeit without some of Map Utility's functionality (specifically, the mapping feature utilizing Google Earth imagery).

From Rudy Winston:

"Basically, the current Canon Map Utility software is in the process of being discontinued. We don’t know the reasons, so there’s little point in my speculating about possible causes of this. However, the good news is that there is a replacement Canon software available, to work with GPS Log files – it’s called Canon GPS [Log File] Utility, and it was posted on the Canon USA web site as a free download in February.

It's not literally the same as the previous Canon Map Utility – it’s basically a *retrieval* and conversion software, and does NOT have “mapping” functionality itself. What it does do is convert Canon GPS Log files into Google Earth-compatible .KMZ files – which can then be used and read by numerous third-party mapping software programs. So it loses the display portion of the previous Map Utility, but again, that should pose little problem for most users, since various 3rd-party solutions to display the Canon-generated .KMZ files on a map are readily available.

There’s reportedly no change in GPS tagging capability either (that is, creation of specific spots where a given image was taken) ... again, you just need a compatible 3rd-party mapping software to display them."

Is the Google Maps API price increase the root cause of this change? I know that one of my favorite dark sky map websites has gone ... dark, popping a "This page can't load Google Maps correctly." message.

Newsday Report: Canon USA Lays Off 60 Employees in Camera Division https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=30675&Title=Newsday-Report-Canon-USA-Lays-Off-60-Employees-in-Camera-Division

Newsday has reported that 60 employees – formerly of Canon USA's Melville, NY location and primarily in the camera division – have been laid off.

The site goes on to say:

Canon employed 1,569 people in Melville in 2017, according to the most recent state records. It must report its local employment annually to the state and to Suffolk County, both of which aided in the construction of Canon’s $500 million headquarters near Exit 49 of the Long Island Expressway.

The company moved from Lake Success to Melville in 2013 after a 25-year search for a new home. It has exceeded the employment promises made to the state and Suffolk so far. State records show Canon's employment cannot fall below 1,360 people or it would have to pay back some of the grant money and tax-break aid it has received.

Canon USA Launches RAISE, Its First Online Photo Community https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=30546&Title=Canon-USA-Launches-RAISE-Its-First-Online-Photo-Community

From Canon USA:

New AI-Integrated Platform Can Help Photographers Advance Their Craft, Save Time with an Improved Workflow as well as Easily Organize and Share Their Photos

MELVILLE, NY, February 27, 2019 – In 2017, approximately 1.2 trillion photos were taken; turning millions of people into prolific photographers1, who are spending a tremendous amount of time arranging and searching through their library of photos. To help photographers streamline their workflow and continually improve their craft, Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the company’s first online photo-community platform – RAISE. This new platform utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to help photographers organize and categorize their photos through auto-tagging.

Features and benefits of RAISE include:

  • Organize – Through the use of Canon’s AI engine, photos uploaded to the platform can be auto-tagged through category and subject tags, as well as photo-centric tags such as the composition, style, emotion and color. Users can upload high-resolution JPEG images to the platform and all photographers retain ownership of all images uploaded to RAISE.
  • Explore – Photographers can receive insights from the RAISE community to learn and help improve their skills to step-up their photography. They can also draw inspiration from the platform with a feed personalized for them based on their own uploaded photos, tags and preferences.
  • Share – Photographers can create Collections within RAISE to privately share with current and prospective clients as well as loved ones, who may not be a part of the RAISE community. A photographer’s work can also be shared publically within the community to receive recognition as well as photo-centric compliments from other photographers, like “great lighting,” beautiful composition,” etc.

An Adobe Lightroom plugin version of RAISE, which is compatible with Adobe Lightroom Classic CC, is currently scheduled to be released next month. This will further enhance the usability of the RAISE features such as auto-tagging images within a user’s Lightroom library through RAISE collections in the platform.

“Creativity is born from community – from collaboration with like-minded individuals,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “With RAISE, we are building that community for photographers. Through this new platform, photographers from all different professional backgrounds and skill sets can come together to share their talents and connect with others in the community. Simply put, we hope RAISE will inspire the next generation of photographers to RAISE the bar and propel their creativity to new heights.”

The new platform along with Canon’s latest solutions will be showcased at this year’s Wedding Portrait & Photography Show (WPPI) in Las Vegas from February 27 - March 1 in the Canon booth #121.

For more information about RAISE and/or to join the community, please stop by the Canon booth at WPPI or visit, raise.usa.canon.com.

Canon Displays Strong Presence At The Big Game In Atlanta https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=30409&Title=Canon-Displays-Strong-Presence-At-The-Big-Game-In-Atlanta

From Canon USA:

MELVILLE, NY, February 5, 2019 – On February 3rd, Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging, was proud to see an estimated 70 percent1 of professional photographers in the Atlanta stadium captured the Big Game between Los Angeles and New England with Canon cameras and lenses. The sidelines were filled with Canon’s iconic white barrels from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. In addition to the sports photographers using Canon camera systems throughout the stadium, an extensive array of Canon HD and 4K UHD broadcast lenses were used to help deliver the live telecast to over 100 million viewers.

“As one of the premier sporting events in the world, the Big Game has become an iconic piece of American culture,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The opportunity that these photographers have on such a large stage is one that can launch a career with the push of the shutter. Canon is proud to help support these photographers on this important assignment, while also helping to broadcast every inch and angle of the game for viewers to enjoy at home.”

A fixture at major sporting events throughout the year, the knowledgeable staff from the Canon Professional Services (CPS) team was on site at the stadium in the week leading up to game day to assist photographers in a multitude of ways. The CPS team kicked off preparations by bringing in loaner gear to supplement the arsenal of cameras and lenses owned by Canon professionals. On site, credentialed photographers were able to bring their gear to CPS for a thorough clean and check to help ensure their equipment was in peak condition and ready to go. Right before game day, the CPS team hosted a Canon-sponsored luncheon dedicated to photographers capturing the Big Game. A Canon broadcast lens technician was also on site at the stadium in the days leading up to the Big Game, providing cleaning and maintenance services to help ensure optimal image quality could be achieved for the vast television viewing audience.

For veteran sports photographer and Canon Explorer of Light Damian Strohmeyer, Canon and CPS have always been a great resource throughout his career. Strohmeyer has shot the Big Game for 33 years, with 2019 marking his 31st consecutive year.

“Each year, CPS pulls out all of the stops for the Big Game,” said Strohmeyer. “But quite honestly, CPS service and support is phenomenal all year round. My Canon gear is incredibly important to help me get the job done. I always know what is going on with my gear, and I’m always supported if I need a replacement or want to try something new. Knowing that I have CPS behind me gives me great peace of mind – especially at an assignment as important as the Big Game.”

In 2019, Canon Professional Services will be on site to assist professional photographers at over 25 engagements, including major sporting, auto racing, Hollywood and political events.

This recognition is based on a variety of factors including: measuring and improving culture, leading with integrity and committing to transparency, diversity and inclusion. In 2018, 135 companies were recognized across 23 countries and 57 industries.

“I’d like to thank the Ethisphere Institute for this honor, which Canon takes great pride in,” said Kenneth Sharpe, Vice President, Corporate Audit, Ethics and Business Consultation, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “To be named as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies is a true reflection of the values, culture and leadership that drive our organization. This distinction speaks to the integrity that is present throughout every level of our organization and represents the hard work and dedication of our cherished colleagues who work to meet this high standard every day.”

“While the discourse around the world changed profoundly in 2017, a stronger voice emerged. Global corporations operating with a common rule of law are now society’s strongest force to improve the human condition. This year we saw companies increasingly finding their voice. The World’s Most Ethical Companies, in particular, continued to show exemplary leadership,” said Timothy Erblich, Chief Executive Officer of Ethisphere. "I congratulate everyone at Canon U.S.A., Inc. for being recognized as one of the World's Most Ethical Companies."

The World's Most Ethical Companies assessment is based upon the Ethisphere Institute’s Ethics Quotient (EQ) framework, which offers a quantitative way to assess a company’s performance in an objective, consistent and standardized manner. The information collected provides a comprehensive sampling of definitive criteria of core competencies, rather than all aspects of corporate governance, risk, sustainability, compliance and ethics. Scores are generated in five key categories:

  • Ethics and compliance program (35%)
  • Corporate citizenship and responsibility (20%)
  • Culture of ethics (20%)
  • Governance (15%)
  • Leadership, innovation and reputation (10%)

Research by the Ethisphere Institute has found that, when indexed, companies listed among the “World’s Most Ethical” outperformed the U.S. Large Cap Index over five years by 10.72 percent and over three years by 4.88 percent. Ethisphere refers to this as the Ethics Premium.

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 6, 2018 – In 2017, Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging, was the number one selling Full-Frame Interchangeable Lens Camera (ILC) brand and APS-C ILC brand in the U.S., according to The NPD Group. Canon has been number one worldwide in these camera segments for the last 14 years, based on a global Canon survey. February 4th showed that 2018 is off to a great start for Canon, as top sports photographers from across the country gathered in Minnesota to cover the big game between the teams from Philadelphia and New England. An estimated 80 percent4 of the photographers in the stadium used Canon EOS DSLR cameras and EF lenses, and Canon’s iconic white lenses filled the sidelines from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. In addition to the photographers on the sidelines, Canon’s line of HD broadcast lenses were also used extensively to help deliver the game to nearly 110 million television viewers.

“Canon understands there are many equipment options for photographers and we are honored to be the primary choice for both the pros capturing the nail-biting moments of the big game and for people capturing the important moments of their lives,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “As an industry leader, we also recognize the important role that service and support plays in keeping our customers satisfied, whether at our award-winning service centers throughout the country or on-site at major global events.”

A full complement of friendly and knowledgeable staff from the Canon Professional Services (CPS) team, a fixture at major sporting events throughout the year, were on site at the stadium for most of the week leading up to game day providing comprehensive equipment maintenance, extensive equipment loans and expert technical support to the major photo agencies and individual professional (or media) photographers covering the game.

For veteran sports photographer and Canon Explorer of Light Peter Read Miller, this was his 40th time covering the big game as a professional, and he was well stocked with Canon cameras and lenses.

"CPS has been a great support to me throughout the years, especially at a game like this where I get real time technical and equipment support. They've been instrumental in my success over the years."," said Miller. “40 years of shooting the big game is an amazing experience. Photographers are just as competitive as the athletes, and it’s great to know that I can count on Canon equipment and support to help me get the winning shot."

In 2018, CPS will be proudly attending to professional photographers at over 22 locations, including major sporting, auto racing, Hollywood and political events.

Canon U.S.A. Welcomed Filmmakers to the Canon Creative Studio as a Sponsor of the 2018 Sundance Film Festival https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=24231&Title=Canon-U-S-A--Welcomed-Filmmakers-to-the-Canon-Creative-Studio-as-a-Sponsor-of-the-2018-Sundance-Film-Festival

From Canon USA:

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 6, 2018 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, returned as a Sustaining Sponsor to the 2018 Sundance Film Festival (January 18th–28th in Park City, Utah). Canon celebrated filmmakers working behind the camera with daily programming at the Canon Creative Studio, located at 592 Main Street.

At least 63 of the 239 films and projects that premiered as part of this year’s slate – over 26 percent -- were shot using Canon equipment. Festival projects filmed using Canon cinema cameras include Generation Wealth, The Adulterers, The Sentence, Robin Williams: Come Inside My Mind, Crime + Punishment, The Trade, The Price of Everything, This is Home, and Awavena.

“Each year, we return to the Sundance Film Festival to connect with the filmmaking community,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A. “In Park City this year, we celebrated innovative projects from the minds of some of the world’s best filmmakers, as well as the bold new technology that help make these projects possible.”

Canon welcomed 2018 Sundance Film Festival attendees to the Canon Creative Studio (open January 19th–22nd, from 11am-7pm) for interactive displays of Canon equipment, live panel discussions, and a relaxing lounge stocked with coffee and snacks. Guests were invited to take a hands-on tour of Canon’s newest cinema camera, the EOS C200, and learn about Canon’s innovative Cinema RAW Light 4K video format. Guests also explored Canon’s flagship cinema camera, the EOS C700, as well as Canon’s line of Cinema, CINE-SERVO, COMPACT-SERVO, and EF lenses.

The Canon Creative Studio also hosted cinematographers, directors, editors, producers, and crew at the invite-only Raise Your Glass To Cinematography cocktail party, Canon’s sixth annual celebration toasting the filmmakers of the Festival.

In 2018, the Canon Creative Studio featured new programming called Magic Hours, co-hosted by IMDbPro (Friday, January 19th), the AFI Conservatory (Saturday, January 20th), and VER (Monday, January 22nd). Each evening event, which were held from 5-7pm, featured an opportunity to network with companies and organizations that share Canon’s mission to support filmmaking.

Canon also introduced a new media partnership with American Cinematographer, the world’s leading publication dedicated to motion imaging and the art and craft of professional cinematography; the monthly international journal, published by the American Society of Cinematographers, is now in its 99th year. The magazine’s editors were on-site at the festival, and several of its contributors moderated a series of six in-depth panel discussions at the Canon Creative Studio, discussing topics such as lens choice, documentary cinematography, and shooting cinematic VR.

The panels were streamed through Facebook Live via American Cinematographer’s feed, accessible to those who could not attend the Festival, giving professional and aspiring cinematographers alike the opportunity to engage with the panelists. American Cinematographer’s website, ascmag.com, also features a series of online interviews with Sundance cinematographers, along with additional articles exploring cinematography trends at the festival, all sponsored by Canon.

Photographer Michael Ori returned to shoot professional headshots of Creative Studio guests. Ori took his photographs with the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV camera. Canon provided guests with an 8” x 10” copy of their portrait, printed on-site with the Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 Professional Inkjet Printer.

In the second year of Canon’s popular collaboration with IMDbPro, the essential resource for entertainment industry professionals, IMDbPro Members were able to instantly upload their newly snapped portraits to their profiles, which reach entertainment industry decision-makers and hundreds of millions of fans worldwide on IMDb, IMDbPro, and Amazon Video. The IMDbPro station was open January 19th-22nd, from 11am-5pm, and guests were also able to experience IMDbPro’s new iPhone app, which empowers members with a convenient way to search the profiles of more than 4 million people, access the latest industry news, get contact and representation details for more than 300,000 industry professionals, and tap through to call or email directly.

On Monday, January 22nd, Canon presented a workshop called “Backpack Filmmaking with the EOS C200,” featuring the versatile and cinematic EOS C200 camera. Canon’s Loren Simons and cinematographer Shana Hagan (Generation Wealth, Inventing Tomorrow, Lenny) led attendees through an experiential session that demonstrates you can shoot cinéma vérité and lit, sit-down interviews with only what you can fit in a backpack. The workshop allowed filmmakers to get better acquainted with the EOS C200 camera’s Cinema RAW Light workflow -- from capture through post.

The winners, MochoPhoto, developed a realtime photo marketplace enhanced with artificial intelligence.

There's no word on whether or not this will become an ongoing annual or biennial event.

Canon’s ME20F-SH Multi-Purpose Camera Enables Viewers to ‘See in the Dark’ on National Geographic’s ‘Earth Live’ https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=21009&Title=Canon’s-ME20F-SH-Multi-Purpose-Camera-Enables-Viewers-to-‘See-in-the-Dark’-on-National-Geographic’s-‘Earth-Live’

MELVILLE, N.Y., August 2, 2017 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to congratulate the team behind the National Geographic’s live television special “Earth Live”. The two-hour broadcast featured a live-production first, by using Canon’s ME20F-SH Multi-Purpose Camera along with a variety of Canon lenses, including the CINE-SERVO 50-1000mm T5.0-8.9 EF to show television viewers live images of illusive nocturnal wildlife from around the world at night, in color, without using artificial lighting. Hosted by award-winning actress Jane Lynch and award-winning television personality Phil Keoghan, the unprecedented two-hour event gave viewers an unfiltered, real-time broadcast feed to see Earth’s wildlife in various natural habitats with the use of 51 cameras shooting simultaneously in 25 different locations across six continents. The show premiered on National Geographic, Nat Geo WILD and Nat Geo MUNDO on Sunday, July 9, and aired in 171 countries and 45 languages.

Working closely with National Geographic, executive producer Al Berman’s idea for “Earth Live” involved several locations that were in total darkness during the live production and those dark locations would either require lights that would disturb wildlife, or the use of infrared or thermal cameras, which didn’t suit Berman’s idea. It wasn’t until 2015 when Canon debuted the ME20F-SH Multi-Purpose Camera that Berman saw the opportunity to broadcast undisturbed nocturnal wildlife in color. The announcement of this revolutionary four million ISO, full-frame sensor camera that can shoot full-color video in extreme low-light conditions, immediately caught the attention of Berman, who approached Canon U.S.A. with his idea. The Company’s technical support team worked closely with Berman and his crew to provide and test equipment to help bring this concept to life.

Canon U.S.A. Unveils New "See Impossible" Videos https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=20695&Title=Canon-U-S-A--Unveils-New-See-Impossible-Videos

From Canon USA:

Two New Videos, “See Beyond Darkness” and “See the Light” Highlight Rare Biofluorescent Turtles, Bioluminescent Creatures Under the Sea, the Aurora Borealis and More

MELVILLE, N.Y., June 5, 2017 – Expanding viewers’ horizons through technology, Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is pushing its creative boundaries with two new “Canon See Impossible” videos that celebrate Canon’s commitment to making the seemingly impossible possible. Available for viewing now on the Canon U.S.A.website, these two new videos – “See Beyond Darkness” and “See the Light” – showcase the capabilities of Canon imaging technology which enables researchers, professional photographers, cinematographers and enthusiasts to shoot impactful clear and crisp imagery, even when masked in darkness due to extremely low-light conditions.

“See Beyond Darkness”

In “See Beyond Darkness,” the impossible assignment for Director of Photography Andy Casagrande was to record images of a rare biofluorescent turtle found only in the remote, unspoiled reefs of the Solomon Islands. The low-light capabilities of Canon’s ME20F-SH Multipurpose Camera and EOS-1D X DSLR camera enabled researchers to capture vivid images without disturbing the natural environment.

“To have Canon step in and facilitate an expedition like “See Beyond Darkness” is incredible. It’s the perfect marriage of cinema and science,” said Casagrande. “When you pair those two together, the opportunities are endless. You can inspire the world to care about the planet.”

“This technology allows us to see things that are beyond human perception. We’re seeing creatures and coral and turtles that we never knew existed,” said Klaus Obermeyer, Director of “See Beyond Darkness.” “We always knew the underwater world is something mysterious, but when you’re taking a camera in that can see in the dark, it’s truly, truly a rare opportunity.”

“See The Light”

In “See the Light,” Canon’s technology captured the beauty of bioluminescent creatures under the sea, the grandeur of the extremely difficult-to-photograph Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights), and the wonder of the earth from far above it.

Each video cinematically illustrates Canon’s dedication to developing leading-edge technology that can provide creative thinkers the tools needed to teach, show, and capture for the world some of its most unexplored locations. The technology used by Canon to create these videos takes viewers to seemingly impossible dark places that were previously beyond what the human eye could see and technology could perceive. Specifically, the remarkable advancement in low-light technology found in the Canon ME20F-SH Multi-Purpose camera plays a feature role in the two new videos. Furthermore, Canon’s EOS C300 Mark II, ME20F-SH, and EOS C500 were used to capture all of the imagery in “See The Light.”

“Canon is proud to create products and technologies that support its customers in pushing the limits of what’s possible,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “It is our responsibility to our customers and our planet to look beyond today and imagine a better tomorrow.”

Canon Celebrates its 14th Consecutive Year of No. 1 Marketshare in Global Interchangeable-Lens Digital Cameras https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=20279&Title=Canon-Celebrates-its-14th-Consecutive-Year-of-No--1-Marketshare-in-Global-Interchangeable-Lens-Digital-Cameras

MELVILLE, N.Y., March 29, 2017 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today that its parent company, Canon Inc., announced that the Company’s interchangeable-lens digital cameras have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 14 consecutive years from 2003 to 2016*.

Canon Inc., which develops the key components featured in its interchangeable-lens cameras—CMOS image sensors, image processors and interchangeable lenses — employs these cutting-edge technologies across its entire product lineup, from entry-level models that achieve high-image quality with easy operation to professional-use flagship cameras, effectively responding to the needs of a wide range of users.

In 2003, the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Digital Rebel. This groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, captured the top share of the global market and set the stage for growth in the digital SLR market. Since that time, Canon has continued to launch a range of epoch-making products, including the professional-model EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series which paved the way for digital SLR video recording.

During 2016, Canon introduced an impressive lineup of interchangeable-lens camera products that supported the Company’s achievement of a 14th consecutive year at the top of the global market. In March, the Company released the EOS 80D for advanced-amateur users, which features excellent still image quality and superb operability when shooting video. Then in April, the Company released its flagship model, the EOS-1D X Mark II, ideal for sport photography thanks to its 14 frame-per-second continuous shooting capability. The EOS 5D Mark IV, capable of 4K video, was then released in September. Additionally, the Company’s interchangeable-lens camera lineup expanded with the introduction of the high-end EOS M5 compact-system camera in November.

Canon will continue to respond to the needs of its wide range of customers by further bolstering its lineup in 2017. Already this year, the Company launched three new interchangeable-lens cameras equipped with the highly accurate autofocus technology, Dual Pixel CMOS AF – the EOS M6 compact-system camera, the EOS 77D and EOS Rebel T7i.

O.J.: Made in America, Winner of the 2017 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, Captured with Canon Cinema EOS C300 Camera https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=20165&Title=O-J--Made-in-America-Winner-of-the-2017-Academy-Award-for-Best-Documentary-Feature-Captured-with-Canon-Cinema-EOS-C300-Camera

From Canon USA:

MELVILLE, N.Y., March 10, 2017 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to congratulate O.J.: Made in America, ESPN Films’ five-part documentary directed by Ezra Edelman and shot by Nick Higgins on winning the 2017 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. The film blends archival video with new footage captured primarily with the Canon EOS C300 Digital Cinema Camera.

Cinematographer Nick Higgins chose the EOS C300 camera for O.J.: Made in America because of the small form factor and ability to capture long takes without stopping. Higgins said, “The EOS C300 was the best camera to shoot this documentary. I really appreciate the small form factor, and was able to roll for hours and hours with just two 64 GB cards and AC power.”

The ability to shoot for long periods of time with limited interruption was crucial. “Interviews for this film lasted at least three hours and were typically around five or six hours long; our longest was eight hours long,” Higgins explained. “The topic of conversation was always intense, and the flow would have been completely thrown off if I had to interrupt for the camera. That’s why the EOS C300 was so important to this project.”

In terms of lenses, Higgins’ relied on the Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L USM lens. “I shot the vast majority on the 50mm at an f2,” Higgins said. “That way, I could make the background abstract without fearing that the subject would go in and out of focus as they breathed.”

“When our skilled engineers develop cameras and lenses, it is our greatest hope that they end up in the hands of filmmakers like Nick Higgins and the team behind O.J.: Made in America,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, President and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “We extend our congratulations on the Oscar win, from everyone at Canon.”

An Estimated 75% of Super Bowl Photographers Used Canon DSLRs and Lenses https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=19970&Title=An-Estimated-75-of-Super-Bowl-Photographers-Used-Canon-DSLRs-and-Lenses

From Canon USA:

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 7, 2017 – On February 5th, top sports photographers from across the country gathered in Houston to cover the Big Game between the teams from New England and Atlanta. With an estimated 75 percent* of the photographers in the Houston stadium using Canon EOS DSLR cameras and EF lenses, Canon’s iconic white lenses filled the sidelines from the opening kickoff to the final whistle. In addition to the EOS DSLR cameras and EF lenses on the sidelines, Canon’s line of HD broadcast lenses were also used extensively to help deliver the game to more than 110 million television viewers.

“It’s an honor to see yet another major sporting event where the country’s most talented and acclaimed sports photographers captured exciting moments with Canon equipment. These images will be seen by millions of people around the world and will forever be etched in sports history. We understand there are many equipment options for professional photographers and Canon is honored to serve these professionals and provide assurances that both our products and support live up to the requirements and expectations of our devoted customers,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc.

For veteran sports photographer and Canon Explorer of Light Damian Strohmeyer, this was his 30th time covering the big game as a professional, and he was well stocked with Canon cameras and lenses. "Leading up to the game, I always make sure to meet with the Canon Professional Services team to run through my settings and firmware, and ensure that my gear is as ready for the big game as the players are," Strohmeyer said. "During the game, there's so much action that you can't be worried about how your equipment will perform. Depending on where the play is, I need to stay prepared for anything that may happen, with no time to switch lenses. For this reason, I used three EOS-1D X Mark II cameras, equipped with EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM, EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM, and EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM lenses. After the game, I switched to an EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM wide angle lens for post-game reaction shots. Everything performed fabulously, and my images came out looking great!"

Canon Professional Services will be proudly attending to professional photographers at over 30 events this year including major sporting, auto racing, Hollywood, and political events throughout the year.

Canon U.S.A. Releases Survey on Customer Support vs. Nikon https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=19530&Title=Canon-U-S-A--Releases-Survey-on-Customer-Support-vs--Nikon

From Canon USA:

Canon U.S.A. Releases Survey Results Confirming Consumer Perceptions of Faster Service Times and Higher Tech Support Satisfaction Over Major Competitor

MELVILLE, N.Y., December 5, 2016 – Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today the findings from a nationwide third-party blind survey that compared customer perceptions concerning the speed of service and quality of tech support offered by Canon and Nikon. The survey was conducted among photographers (primarily professional, semi-professional, and advanced amateur) in November 2016 and found that customers perceive Canon’s service times to be faster than Nikon’s and that customer satisfaction with tech support is higher for Canon than it is for Nikon.

“Our customers need service they can count on,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, President and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “We are very proud of our achievements in delivering world-class service and support. By making customer service an integral part of our business model, we are positioned to meet and exceed the changing needs and expectations of our customers.”

Key Survey Findings

  • Ultra-Fast Service: 76.9 percent of Canon customers who have had a service experience in the last 18 months indicated that the speed of their service was either ultra-fast or fast compared to 64.7 percent for Nikon.
  • Support Matters: 90.4 percent of Canon customers indicated that they were completely satisfied or satisfied with the technical support they received, as compared to 73.7 percent of Nikon's customers.

Canon has made significant investments in service and support programs and operations, starting with the opening of their first call center in Chesapeake, VA in 1995. The Company prides itself on providing 100 percent in-house U.S. technical support. When it comes to call center operations, keeping all tech support calls in-house allows the Company to tightly control the quality and depth of the tech support provided. Canon maintains full control of its customers’ repair transactions, unlike other industry players that may rely on local third-party service providers to augment their service processing. This is a key differentiator for Canon and is one of the factors that allows the brand to control quick turn-around times and quality service.

About the Ultra-Fast Canon Service & Support Team

  • Support Across the Country: Canon’s Service & Support Network spans from the East to the West Coast (reaching as far as Honolulu, HI) with 10 locations totaling more than 300,000 square feet of space devoted to serving customers. Canon has two call center locations – in Virginia and New Mexico – which boast an average wait time of only 78 seconds to talk to a live tech support representative. There are also three locations in key metropolitan areas that specifically cater to professional customers, in addition to four factory service locations that serve all customers. Canon also has a Customer Care Center, which offers a service drop-off point at its corporate headquarters located in Melville, NY. In the spring of 2017, the Canon Hollywood Professional Technology & Support Center will relocate to Burbank, CA. In this new location, Canon service and support will be enhanced even further to assist the growing number of professional filmmakers and broadcast production clients in Southern California.
  • It’s More Than Just Support: The Canon Experience Center located in Costa Mesa, CA, not only offers service, but is also home to Live Learning workshops and seminars that provide opportunities to learn the latest photography, video, and printing techniques. Additionally, both the Costa Mesa and Lyndhurst, NJ, locations house product showrooms where customers can explore the latest Canon products.
  • 100 Percent U.S.-Based Team: Canon provides 100 percent U.S.-based tech support that is completely in-house staffed with over 600 “all Canon” employees. Canon’s combined nationwide service and support network is comprised of over 1,100 expert service and support team members who maintain full control of service quality and speed of repair transactions.

In addition to announcing the results of this survey, Canon has also launched a new digital advertising campaign that highlights the Company’s knowledgeable tech support staff and efficient service times that average 2.82 days (1.59 days for Canon Professional Services (CPS) Platinum members)1.

About the Survey

A blind survey was conducted between the dates of November 17-22, 2016, resulting in over 2,300 responses from photographers, primarily professional, semi-professional and advanced amateurs. The methodology and results were validated by a third-party expert, Dr. William Bleuel, Ph.D.
