It seems hard to believe that the Canon EOS 5 Series is now 20 years old, but Canon is celebrating that accomplishment.

Canon celebrates 20th anniversary of EOS 5 interchangeable-lens digital camera series

TOKYO, July 28, 2025—Canon Inc. announces that this year marks the 20th anniversary of the EOS 5 interchangeable-lens digital camera series. This series has consistently delivered new value to both professional and advanced amateur users with cutting-edge technologies and the latest innovative features.

The EOS 5 series was born in September 2005 with the release of its first model, the EOS 5D, a DSLR camera. The EOS 5D was the first in Canon's line of products for advanced amateur users to include a full-frame CMOS sensor, which at the time had only been adopted in models for professionals. Featuring outstanding resolution, rich color gradation, and a wide ISO sensitivity range, this model contributed to the popularization of full-frame cameras. Canon has launched a total of eight models in the EOS 5 series as of June 2025.

In November 2008, Canon released the second-generation EOS 5D Mark II, the series’ first model equipped with full-HD video shooting functions, which helped to popularize video shooting through DSLR cameras.

Since then, Canon has released several models in pursuit of performance and expressive ability for creating works. These include the EOS 5D Mark III (released in March 2012), with heightened AF accuracy and continuous shooting speed; the EOS 5Ds and EOS 5Ds R (released in June 2015), featuring the world’s largest number of pixels1—approximately 50.6 megapixels—at the time of release; and the EOS 5D Mark IV (released in September 2016), which finely balanced specs including a large number of pixels, high-speed continuous shooting, and high capturing sensitivity.

In July 2020, Canon released the EOS R5, the first full-frame mirrorless camera in the EOS R System to bear the number “5” in its name. Equipped with a high-performance image processor and boasting the world’s first2 (at the time of release) 8K video shooting function3 among interchangeable lens cameras, it made significant improvements to basic camera functions for both still image and video.

Additionally, its successor, the EOS R5 Mark II (released in August 2024), significantly improved still image and video functions in comparison to previous models, thanks to a newly developed “Accelerated Capture” image processing system and the use of deep learning technology. This model, which combines superb subject tracking with advanced mobility, meets the needs of both professional and advanced amateur users while enabling diverse visual expressions.

In this way, the EOS 5 series has led the EOS series by offering cutting-edge technology and delivering innovation.

Canon will continue making contributions to the further development of photography and video culture by pursuing cutting-edge technology and a high level of expressive power through the EOS 5 series, which has received broad support from both professional and advanced amateur users alike.

From Canon Inc.,

Canon makes its EOS VR SYSTEM compatible with "Apple Projected Media Profile" and "spatial photo" in an aim to expand the 3D VR market and strengthens collaboration with Apple

TOKYO, June 10, 2025—Canon Inc. announced today that two of its RF lenses for 3D VR video—the RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE (released in December 2021) and the RF-S3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE (released in June 2024)—will offer compatibility with "Apple Projected Media Profile" (hereafter "APMP"), a QuickTime movie profile that will be supported by the Apple Vision Pro spatial computer developed by Apple Inc. (hereafter "Apple"). Canon has also announced that it will make its RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL lens (released in November 2024) compatible with "spatial photo," and that it will help to further expand the 3D VR market through collaboration with Apple going forward.

Canon launched the EOS VR System for capturing VR video in 2021, and since then has met the needs for VR video production in diverse fields including entertainment, tourism, and education. In June 2024, the company announced the RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL, a lens capable of recording “spatial video,” which is a type of 3D footage with a sense of depth, for the Apple Vision Pro. Through these developments, Canon has been helping to expand the range of expression available in 3D VR.

At the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), hosted by Apple on June 9, 2025 (Pacific Standard Time), Apple announced visionOS 26, the newest OS for the Apple Vision Pro. In conjunction with this announcement, two of Canon’s RF lenses for 3D VR video, RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE and RF-S3.9mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE, will offer native playback of “APMP” which will be supported by visionOS 26, scheduled to be released in the latter half of 2025. Specifically, footage shot with these lenses and compatible cameras1 can be converted to “APMP” using the EOS VR Utility2 app, making it even easier for users to enjoy a high-quality, immersive experience with the Apple Vision Pro.

By updating EOS VR Utility, the RF-S7.8 mm F4 STM DUAL will also be able to handle not only “spatial video” but also “spatial photo,” which is a 3D image that allows users to enjoy a sense of depth as a still image, when combined with Canon’s mirrorless camera models EOS R7 (released in June 2022) and EOS R50 V (released in May 2025). Additionally, in mid-July 2025, the EOS R50 (released in March 2023) will also be made compatible with the EOS VR SYSTEM through a firmware update, thereby enabling both “spatial video” and “spatial photo.”

Going forward, Canon will further strengthen the EOS VR SYSTEM in collaboration with Apple to meet the creative needs of pro users who strive to produce stunning immersive video as they explore new ways of storytelling.

1 RF5.2mm F2.8 L DUAL FISHEYE can be mounted on the following cameras: EOS R5 (July 2020), EOS R5C (March 2022), EOS R6 Mark II (December 2022), EOS R5 Mark II (August 2024), EOS C400 (September 2024), EOS C80 (November 2024). RF-S3.9 mm F3.5 STM DUAL FISHEYE can be mounted on: EOS R7, EOS R50 V. As of June 9th, 2025.

2“APMP,” “spatial video” and “spatial photo” are only supported by the macOS version of EOS VR Utility. Some features may require a fee.

*Apple Vision Pro, Quicktime, and visionOS are trademarks of Apple Inc.

With its amazing reach and flexible zoom range, the RF 75-300mm F4-5.6 provides creative freedom when shooting photos and video of subjects you can’t physically get close to. Users can keep their distance to avoid disturbing wild animals and birds or zoom right into the action when photographing a sports event from the sidelines. The streamlined design lets users react quickly, with a large zoom ring requiring little more than a quarter of a turn to run through the entire zoom range.

At 300mm it’s possible to get as close as 1.5m to fill the frame with detail, making this lens a practical solution for portraits of animals and people. The long zoom and wide, seven-blade aperture ensure superb separation between a sharp subject and blurred background for a refined look.

This classic entry-level, full-frame 75-300mm lens can be used on any camera equipped with Canon’s advanced RF mount. Paired with an APS-C body such as the EOS R100, it delivers a more powerful 120-480mm effective reach to bring distant subjects even closer. Despite its extensive telephoto coverage, the lens weighs just 507g and is a compact 146.1mm in length when retracted. It’s one of the lightest lenses in its class and ready to go anywhere, from local sport matches to remote nature reserves.

The versatile range of focal lengths, affordable pricing and outstanding portability of the RF 75-300mm F4-5.6 ensure that everyone is able to extend their reach and take their passion further.

Key features of the RF 75-300mm F4-5.6:

Canon Unveils New Lenses for High-Level Social Creators Seeking Visual Excellence and Greater Expression Across Stills and Cinematic Video

MELVILLE, NY, March 26, 2025 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, has announced two new lenses designed for social media creators: the RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ, Canon’s first RF Lens with Power Zoom optimized for cinematic video, and the RF20mm F1.4 L VCM, a f/1.4 hybrid prime lens that enables high levels of expression across photo and video shooting.

The RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ lens is designed with a variety of shooting scenarios and needs in mind, from cinematic video to livestreaming and selfie POV. The RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ lens is packed with convenient functions for both still and video formats, including a wide angle of view, smooth cinema-style Auto Focus, optical Image Stabilization that suppresses blur in challenging situations, and more. Its uniform design and simple operability make it a worthy standard lens for the new Canon EOS R50 V camera, also announced today. When paired, the camera and lens make a beautiful, minimalist package, although the lens can also be seamlessly matched with Canon’s larger EOS R series of cameras.

Canon RF-S 14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ Lens Angle

The outstanding feature of the RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ lens is its power zoom design. Its fixed-length zoom with customizable control rings allows each individual creator to achieve their desired style and expressive intentions, while its ease of use allows them to prioritize their creative flow above all else. The use of a ring-style control for power zoom operations instead of a button or lever makes it possible to zoom from any direction regardless of shooting style. This gives more flexibility in angle of view adjustments, allowing users to enjoy great creative possibilities with smooth zooming while securely holding the camera, or zooming to change the angle of view from the front when taking selfies. And in vertical orientation, it provides outstanding operability that does not interfere with camera controls.

The RF20mm F1.4 L VCM is a 20mm ultra wide-angle lens and is the fourth addition to Canon’s RF Hybrid Prime series specifically designed for creators who switch between photo and video shooting. This lens pushes the boundaries of creative expression, offering extensive width, and depth, and beautiful dramatic effects for those who seek a high level of output across still and video shooting. Perfect for creators, video journalists, corporate video professionals, and independent filmmakers, the new RF20mm F1.4 L VCM lens is an impressive addition to Canon’s products that cater to the new era of hybrid shooting needs.

The lens features quiet, fast, and precise AF for both still and video shooting due to Canon’s actuator and focusing systems. It features dramatically reduced focus breathing compared to non-VCM lense, an iris ring for convenient movie shooting, and more. The unbeatable expressive power of an f/1.4 large aperture combined with shallow depth of field lends outstanding optical performance and enables rich, dynamic bokeh. The RF20mm F1.4 L VCM can also be used for shooting rich and clear videos and stills in dark places without increasing the sensitivity. Additionally, the UD and Super UD lenses and the Blue Refractive (BR) optics dramatically reduce the color bleeding that tends to occur with large aperture lenses.

The design of Canon’s RF Hybrid Prime series, now with the addition of the RF20mm F1.4 L VCM lens, was conceptualized to take full advantage of the RF Mount with its minimalist features and compact nature, to create an elegant, sleek camera package that any creator would be proud to take out of their camera bag.

Pricing and Availability

The RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ Lens is currently scheduled to be available in July 2025 for an estimated retail price of $329.99.* The RF20mm F1.4 L VCM is currently scheduled to be available in April 2025 for an estimated retail price of $1,699.00.*

Canon starts the CP+ show with a declaration. From Canon USA:

Canon Celebrates 22nd Consecutive Year of No. 1 Share of Global Interchangeable-Lens Digital Camera Market

MELVILLE, N.Y., - February 24, 2025 — Canon U.S.A., Inc. today announced that its parent company, Canon Inc. is celebrating that the company’s interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and mirrorless cameras) have maintained the No. 1 share1 of the global market for 22 consecutive years from 2003 to 2024.

Canon’s EOS series of interchangeable lens digital cameras is an imaging system based on the basic concept of “Speed, Comfort, and High Image Quality,” for which the company has developed proprietary key components, including CMOS image sensors, the DIGIC image processors, and interchangeable lenses. Putting together a wide-ranging product lineup—from high-performance flagship models that are highly trusted by professionals to entry-level models that allow users to enjoy full-scale shooting with easy operation, as well as a rich selection of over 1202 RF and EF series lenses that make possible a wealth of creative expression—Canon continues to support the diverse needs of customers.

Throughout its 22-year history, the EOS series has led the market with a range of outstanding models. During the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Kiss Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D in other regions) in September 2003. By launching this groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, Canon spurred growth in the digital SLR market, capturing the top share of the global market and heralding the age of digital SLR cameras.

Canon has continued to release further innovative cameras by launching the professional-model EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording. The company’s desire to further expand the boundaries of visual expression led to its next-generation EOS R SYSTEM, launched in October 2018, that includes the full-frame mirrorless camera EOS R5—the first camera to feature 8K video recording3—released in July 2020 and the EOS R3 in November 2021, which features tracking of fast-moving subjects and continuous shooting performance. In addition, it launched the EOS VR SYSTEM, designed to record video for virtual reality content, in December 2021.

In 2024, Canon managed to secure the No. 1 share of the global market once again for the 22nd consecutive year by further enhancing its lineup of EOS R Series cameras and lenses.

For cameras, Canon released the EOS R5 Mark II (August 2024), a full-frame mirrorless camera that combines the capability to cover shooting in a wide range of scenarios with a single camera with mobility, and the EOS R1 (November 2024), the first flagship model of the EOS R SYSTEM. Both models featured the new image processing system “Accelerated Capture” and included diverse video shooting functions accumulated through the CINEMA EOS SYSTEM for achieving high-speed analysis and high-speed shooting.

As for lenses, in 2024 Canon expanded its L-series lineup of large-aperture single-focus lenses, which contribute to full-fledged video production, and added 15 models of RF lenses4, including two types of lenses that facilitate making 3D VR videos to meet the growing demand for video and handle 3D imaging.

Going forward, Canon will continue to refine its proprietary imaging technologies while bringing fulfillment and excitement to people’s daily lives as well as promoting the spread of photo and video culture by providing products, services, and solutions that meet its customers’ diverse needs.

Release of the flagship model of the "PowerShot V Series," the "PowerShot V1"

Full-fledged video and still image functions meet the wide range of needs of creators

Canon will release the PowerShot V1, a compact digital camera that enables easy, professional video and still image shooting, in late April 2025.

The PowerShot V1 is the second compact digital camera in the PowerShot V series, which allows users to enjoy full-scale video shooting, following the Vlog camera PowerShot V10 (released in June 2023). Compared to the 1.0-type sensor installed in a normal compact digital camera, the 1.4-type CMOS sensor is about twice the area, achieving high image quality and high sensitivity. In 35mm equivalent, it covers a zoom range equivalent to a focal length of about 16mm to 50mm1, and is compatible with a wide range of scenes such as selfies with multiple people, snapshots, and Vlogs. In addition, it combines the functions required by creators, such as high-performance AF and a variety of shooting modes, with a compact body, making it easy to shoot full-scale videos and still images. Canon will continue to expand its models that can both shoot full-scale videos and still images to meet the needs of a variety of users.

Main features

An integrated lens camera that combines professional photography performance with a compact body

The combination of a 1.4-inch CMOS sensor with a maximum effective pixel count of approximately 22.3 million pixels2, the first Canon compact digital camera to be equipped with the DIGIC X image engine, achieves a maximum standard ISO sensitivity of 32,000 (when shooting still images). Canon's proprietary AF system, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II for PowerShot3, also achieves high-speed, high-precision AF. Furthermore, the inclusion of the Eye Detection4 function makes it possible to detect the eyes of animals, whose movements are difficult to predict, in addition to people, making it easy to focus when shooting. With full-fledged shooting performance packed into a compact body, you can carry it around with you on trips and enjoy shooting.

Cooling Fan Diagram

Video recording functions that allow for greater freedom in video expression, including the incorporation of a cooling fan

The camera is equipped with a cooling fan inside, which efficiently releases heat, reducing the impact of temperature rise on video recording time. In addition to realizing 4K crop/60P video recording, it supports "Canon Log 3", allowing recording with rich 10-bit gradation and excellent color reproduction. Furthermore, shooting modes such as "Review Video", which is suitable for product reviews, and "Image Stabilization Video", which is effective for handheld shooting5, make video recording comfortable.

High-speed continuous shooting at up to 30 frames per second ensures you never miss a subject, and still image shooting functions enable a wide range of creative expression

When using the electronic shutter, continuous shooting at up to 30 frames per second is possible, making it possible to capture fast-moving subjects. In addition, the camera automatically recognizes the scene and supports difficult scenes such as night scenes and backlit scenes with the "Advanced A+" mode, and "Creative Filters" allow for impressive shots such as diorama and toy camera style shots, and many other functions that enable rich photographic expression.

1 When shooting video, the focal length is equivalent to approximately 17mm to 52mm in 35mm format.

2 When shooting still images. When shooting video: Maximum effective pixel count approx. 18.7 million pixels. The number of effective pixels may decrease due to image processing.

3 The maximum measurable area is approximately 90% horizontal x 90% vertical.

4 The subject that can be detected is the eyes of people and animals (dogs and cats). Birds and horses cannot be detected.

5 When "Auto Horizon Correction: On" is set, the "Image Stabilization Video" setting cannot be set.

Canon Launches imagePROGRAF PRO-310 Inkjet Printer

MELVILLE, N.Y., January 30, 2025 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the launch of the imagePROGRAF PRO-310 Professional Inkjet Printer, a 13-inch device for professional and prosumer photographers, students, and others looking for a home printer that can generate excellent color reproduction while possessing longevity and durability.

The imagePROGRAF PRO-310, designed to provide superior light resistance for long-term preservation of high-quality printed works, adopts the newly developed pigment ink, "LUCIA PRO II"1 – featuring 10 colors – to help meet the needs of professional photographers who want to print high-quality photos while preserving the appeal of their work for the future.

“The PRO-310 is designed to assist our customers achieve vivid colors while offering easy and efficient output, and we are excited to deliver the ability for users to make professional-looking prints and layouts to help meet their dynamic needs and continue to deliver exceptional results.” said Shuji “Steve” Suda, vice president of Canon U.S.A., Inc.

Designed for excellent color reproduction

The Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-310 adopts a newly developed LUCIA PRO II1 pigment ink system designed to help improve the image quality from previous models while also enhancing resistance to light. Improved black density on art paper was achieved by changing the formulation and material of matte black ink. The reformulated Chroma Optimizer is designed to give the surface a clear coat of transparent ink that helps suppress bronze phenomena and helps reduce uneven glossiness.

Improved longevity and durability

The pigment ink, "LUCIA PRO II," adds wax to ink to help provide scratch resistance, designed to make it easier to handle in framing, packaging, transportation, display, and other situations where the print could be easily damaged, while allowing for long-term appreciation and preservation.

For efficiency, a nozzle recovery system works to help ensure that is a clog is detected in one nozzle, other will automatically compensate, contributing to the reduction in the frequency of head cleanings while working to prevent print waste due to banding.

A built-in skew correction mechanism straightens paper fed diagonally from the top tray or manual feed tray, working to reducing printing errors by stabilizing output for thick paper and other paper types.

Canon is proud to announce the imagePROGRAF PRO-310 has registered for EPEAT Gold designation as a product, which, if awarded, would show that it has met EPEAT’s most demanding set of criteria for sustainability leadership in electronics1. Interesting release from Canon Inc.:

Canon develops CMOS sensor with 410 megapixels, the largest number of pixels ever achieved in a 35 mm full-frame sensor

TOKYO, January 22, 2025— Canon Inc. announced today that it has developed a CMOS sensor with 410 megapixels (24,592 x 16,704 pixels), which is the largest number1 of pixels ever achieved in a 35 mm full-frame sensor. This sensor is expected to be used in applications that demand extreme resolution in various markets including surveillance, medicine, and industry.

The newly developed CMOS sensor features a resolution equivalent to 24K (198 times greater than Full HD, and 12 times greater than 8K). This enables users to crop any part of the image captured by this sensor and enlarge it significantly while maintaining high resolution. While many CMOS sensors with a super-high pixel count are medium-format or larger, this extreme resolution sensor is compacted into a 35 mm full-frame format. This allows it to be used in combination with lenses for full-frame sensors, and it is expected to contribute to the miniaturization of shooting equipment. As data readout of a CMOS sensor tends to take longer as the number of pixels increases, achieving a CMOS sensor with a super-high pixel count requires advanced signal processing technology. The newly developed sensor employs a back-illuminated stacked formation in which the pixel segment and signal processing segment are interlayered and also includes a redesigned circuitry pattern. As a result, the sensor is capable of achieving a super-high readout speed of 3,280 megapixels per second, delivering video at 8 frames per second2.

This sensor3 also features a “four-pixel binning” function that virtually treats four adjoining pixels as one, thereby improving sensitivity and making it possible to capture brighter images. When this function is in use, the sensor can capture 100-megapixel video at 24 frames per second.

By leveraging the technology it has accumulated over many years as a leading imaging company, Canon has developed breakthrough products including CMOS sensors with super-high pixel count and ultra-sensitivity, and SPAD sensors, which detect faint traces of light even in dark areas. Canon will continue to advance its technology and contribute to the transformation and further development of society.

Additional information

The sensor is scheduled to be displayed at the Canon booth at SPIE Photonics West, a leading global conference for optics and photonics held in San Francisco from January 28-30, 2025.

1 As of January 21, 2025 (According to a survey by Canon).

2 Applies to both color and monochrome sensors

3 Monochrome sensor only

Additionally, users can specify the number of seconds4 before the shooting device automatically changes over to another to broadcast video with dynamic flow even when they are working alone and cannot manually operate multiple devices.

Users can harness the app to customize their livestreams to make them more engaging. By freely adding text and graphics5 to the screen, users can create a unique and original livestream screen that makes their content stand out. They can also check6 comments from viewers in real time, thereby achieving two-way communication.

The app can also livestream the screens of the devices to easily produce videos showing live gameplay or application operations with just an iPhone or iPad. Additionally, video from another device camera can be layered on top of the livestream screen so that viewers can see the streamer’s facial expressions and reactions alongside the video of the smartphone screen.

“Live Switcher Mobile” will also support digital camera connection in the future to make high quality live streaming easier and more flexible.

Live Switcher Mobile (free*) will launch January 20, 2025
