Upcoming Facility Provides Additional U.S.-Based Customer Service; Creates Job Opportunities in New Mexico

MELVILLE, N.Y., October 7, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today that Canon Information Technology Services, Inc. (CITS), its wholly owned subsidiary, will open a customer support center at 4041 Jefferson Plaza NE in Albuquerque, N.M. This center will provide additional customer service support and technical capabilities for Canon customers.

The 33,682-square-foot Albuquerque center will support small office and consumer imaging products, including digital cameras, camcorders, printers, and copiers. The new location will also support Canon's growing professional printing, cinema, and eCommerce customers. It is anticipated that the support center will create at least 150 call center positions over a three-year period. Hiring is expected to commence in early 2014, with operations anticipated to begin in April 2014.

"Expanding our support centers illustrates our continuing commitment to providing 100 percent U.S.-based customer service," said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. "We chose Albuquerque specifically because the area has a reduced exposure to weather-related disruptions, the ability to service multiple time zones, and an educated workforce, a large percentage of which has bilingual capabilities, all of which will help us serve our customers better."

"We thank Canon, an internationally-renowned company, for choosing Albuquerque for the site of their new tech services center and creating jobs for New Mexicans," said Governor Susana Martinez. "In addition to having a skilled workforce, our recently improved tax climate and incentives make New Mexico a great place for companies like Canon to operate and succeed. I also commend Mayor Berry and his leadership in creating a business-friendly city and for his partnership in recruiting Canon here."

"Canon ITS and Albuquerque are a great match for each other and we are very pleased they are joining our community," said Mayor Richard J. Berry. "Like Albuquerque, Canon has a strong commitment to diversity and to providing a 'work environment that is technology driven and people-oriented.' It's no surprise they're ranked among Fortune's 'Most Admired Companies in America.' I'm pleased I was able to work with the executive team from Canon for the last few months to make this project a win-win for all of us."

"Bernalillo County is pleased to be part of the partnership that attracted Canon and its 150 new jobs to Central New Mexico," said Commission Vice-Chair Debbie O'Malley. "I know there are many qualified, talented New Mexicans who are excited about filling those positions and joining in Canon's long tradition of excellence."

Steve Maestas, Chairman of Albuquerque Economic Development, Inc., praised the collaborative effort that successfully landed the project. "The community and state prosper when we are aligned, working together with a single purpose. Canon is an internationally respected leader whose expansion to Albuquerque is important to our goal of attracting the world's finest companies."

From Canon:

A new firmware update is available for the EOS-1D C. Firmware Version 1.3.x adds new functionality incorporating the following features and modifications:

Lens aberration correction with EF Cinema Lenses: Communication between Canon EF Cinema lenses and Canon cameras has had a few effects on the operation of the EOS-1D C. The following features are now available as menu options:

  • Peripheral Illumination Correction: This feature maintains even brightness from corner to corner of an image. This will virtually eliminate vignetting and any other unevenness of light across the image.
  • Chromatic Aberration Correction: This feature reduces color fringing in areas of an image with high contrast color. It reduces color bleeding, which is easily noticeable at edges and degrades perceived image quality.
  • In addition, communication between the lens and camera body will allow the F-stop to now be seen on the viewfinder. Focus position and F-stop will also now be recorded by the camera.
  • Flicker caused by manual aperture adjustment has been reduced with this update, this could cause slight underexposure which may result in exposure compensation in some cases.

Sound recording with Line input:

  • After requests from users in the field, audio recording through a mini plug (3.5mm) connected to the external microphone terminal is now supported. This will allow for the recording of audio sources other than microphones, such as mobile devices or audio players. The standard input level is -8 dBV and can reach an input signal of up to +6 dBV. Sound recording levels are adjustable at 64 sound-recording levels.

Service support start date is anticipated mid-October 2013. For information regarding the EOS-1D C firmware update (which must be performed by a Canon Factory Service center) please contact Canon Cinema EOS Support at 1-855-CINE-EOS (246-3367).

10 Films Inspired By User Submitted Photographs Will be Packaged by Canon as "A Ron Howard Presentation" - The Winning Consumer Directors and Five Celebrity Directors: Eva Longoria, Jamie Foxx, James Murphy, Georgina Chapman and Biz Stone

MELVILLE, N.Y., September 19, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, two-time Academy Award winner Ron Howard, and Bryce Dallas Howard, one of Hollywood's most versatile actresses and director of the 2011 short film "when you find me," have announced the five winning consumer directors of the "Project Imaginat10n" film contest, which gave filmmakers of all skill levels an opportunity to showcase their creativity and storytelling abilities. Five celebrity directors also took part in the same creative exercise: Eva Longoria (film and TV actress), Jamie Foxx (Academy Award winner), Biz Stone (co-founder of Twitter), Georgina Chapman (designer and co-founder of Marchesa) and James Murphy (founder of LCD SOUNDSYSTEM).

The challenge was to create a short film inspired by ten crowdsourced photos in ten storytelling themes: Character, Mood, Goal, Backstory, Setting, Obstacle, Relationship, The Unknown, Time and Discovery. The Discovery photo, "Discovering limits," was selected by Ron Howard and served as the thematic tie in each film. From hundreds of film submissions, twenty finalists were selected by a panel of judges. From there, Ron Howard and Bryce Dallas Howard selected five winners to be part of "A Ron Howard Presentation."

Each film was judged based on imaginativeness, originality, technical quality, overall impression and the extent to which the film was inspired by ten of the winning Project Imaginat10n photos. The five Grand Prize winners include:

  • Arrius Sorbonne, 24 years old of Salt Lake City, UT with his submission, "Dominus"
  • Jared Nelson, 26 years old of Rancho Cucamonga, CA with his submission, "Chucked"
  • Julian Higgins, 27 years old of Los Angeles, CA with his submission, "Here and Now"
  • Kalman Apple, 53 years old of Los Angeles, CA with his submission, "A Day in the Country"
  • Ronnie Allman, 26 years old of San Francisco, CA with his submission, "Filter"

Bryce Dallas Howard, the first "graduating" director of the Project Imagin8ion experiment, utilized her experience from directing the short film, "when you find me," to mentor aspiring filmmakers across the country through the contest– speaking at select film schools and revealing her tips in an online webisode series, "Bryce's Project Imaginat10n Film Contest Tutorial."

"The caliber of films that we reviewed was beyond anything we were expecting," said Bryce Dallas Howard, "This exercise continues to prove that creativity and collaboration generate endless possibilities that mark the state of our time."

"We were blown away and humbled by the quality of the films," said Ron Howard. "The five films selected took an incredible approach to the experiment and were completely imaginative and fascinating."

The winning consumer-directed films can be viewed at imagination.usa.canon.com.

The project, helmed by two-time Academy Award® winner Ron Howard is the next phase in the "Project Imaginat10n"creative exercise proving Ron's very own words that "we're all creative." Eva Longoria (film and TV actress), Jamie Foxx (Academy Award® winner), Biz Stone (co-founder of Twitter), Georgina Chapman (designer and co-founder of Marchesa) and James Murphy (founder of LCD SOUNDSYSTEM) all directed short films inspired by 10 consumer photographs earlier this year.

"For year two, it was important to me to open the experiment to the masses, especially at film schools where Bryce had the opportunity to share her experience."

"This exercise continues to prove that creativity and collaboration generate endless possibilities that mark the state of our time," said Bryce Dallas Howard. "All you need is some basic equipment, an imagination and a burning desire to tell a story."

From Canon USA:

MELVILLE, N.Y., July 19, 2013 - Celebrating a monumental step in the Company's history, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today held a grand opening ceremony of its Canon Americas Headquarters in Melville, N.Y. Joined by Fujio Mitarai, chairman and CEO of Canon Inc., Joe Adachi, president and CEO of Canon U.S.A., welcomed state and local officials to show appreciation for their support of the headquarters project.

Among those officials in attendance were Senator Charles Schumer; Kenneth Adams president and CEO of Empire State Development, representing Governor Andrew Cuomo; Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and the Huntington Town Supervisor Frank P. Petrone. The new 700,000 square-foot headquarters serves as a symbol of Canon's commitment to growth, innovation and the Long Island community.

"The official opening of the Canon Americas Headquarters is an exciting time for our Company and we are grateful for all of the local support we have received along the way," said Joe Adachi, president and CEO of Canon U.S.A. "Canon's dedication to the environment and the community is an integral part of our corporate culture. The headquarters, which is designed to meet LEED® gold certification, will serve as a symbol of this commitment."

"It is an exciting day for the Canon family as we officially celebrate the grand opening of our new home on Long Island," said Seymour Liebman, executive vice president, chief administrative officer and general counsel, Canon U.S.A. "Canon has proudly called Long Island home for 42 years and we are grateful for the support we have received from those who helped us reach this milestone."

"Today's grand opening ceremony marks a picture perfect moment for Canon U.S.A. and all of Long Island," said Senator Charles Schumer. "'One Canon Park' will be an anchor business for the Route 110 corridor and attract business visitors from across the world. When I first met with senior Canon officials years ago, I knew this project would be a success. I fought hard, along with officials from Long Island, to secure millions of dollars for road improvements in-and-around this heavily commuted corridor and worked to secure millions of stimulus dollars so that Canon could relocate to Melville. With over 1,400 jobs on Long Island, Canon is an asset to the local economy and I am proud to have seen this project through to fruition. Congratulations to the chairman and CEO of Canon, Fujio Mitarai and all of the local leaders who made today possible."

"The grand opening of Canon's Americas headquarters is great news for Long Islanders and all of New York State. Empire State Development is working harder than ever to help companies create and retain much-needed jobs and Canon is certainly doing just that with hundreds of new jobs on the way and over 1,000 New Yorkers retaining their positions," said Empire State Development President, CEO and Commissioner Kenneth Adams. "As a proud supporter of this project, I congratulate Chairman and CEO Fujio Mitarai and Canon, the local leaders and the people of Long Island on this accomplishment."

"Canon's grand opening of its new headquarters in Melville will help strengthen Long Island's workforce and ensure that Route 110 continues to be a successful business corridor for all Long Islanders," said Congressman Steve Israel, who was not in attendance. "I proudly fought for federal infrastructure funding to make this project possible and keep jobs on Long Island. Having Canon's headquarters on Long Island is a victory for our community and is estimated to indirectly bring up to 10,000 jobs to the region. I look forward to Canon's continued success in the years ahead."

"Today is a great day as we celebrate the grand opening of Canon U.S.A.'s corporate headquarters here in Suffolk County," said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone. "Creating and retaining high-quality jobs is paramount to our success as a County and as a region and Canon U.S.A. is contributing to that success. Canon is a welcome addition to the Suffolk County business community and I look forward to continuing to work with our federal, state and local officials to attract and retain businesses on Long Island."

"The Town of Huntington has long awaited this day, when we can officially welcome Canon and its dedicated workforce to Huntington," said Huntington Town Supervisor Frank P. Petrone. "We thank Canon for choosing Huntington as the site for its Americas headquarters and look forward to a long and close relationship as the company cements its status as an integral part of the community and the local economy."

Joining London and Tokyo as one of the three worldwide headquarters locations, the Canon Americas Headquarters serves all North and South American countries and stands as a model for environmental stewardship and innovation. The Melville, N.Y. facility features several environmentally conscious elements including daylight harvesting, drought resistant vegetation and electric vehicle charging stations.

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 29, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced its parent company, Canon Inc., has reached a new lens-manufacturing milestone with the production of its 90-millionth EF-series interchangeable lens for EOS cameras. Canon turned out its 90-millionth lens, an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L II USM (released in September 2012), on May 23, 2013.

The production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) single-lens reflex film cameras began in 1987 at the Company's Utsunomiya Plant. Since that time, supported by a wide range of users, demand has steadily increased and production has expanded. Today, Canon produces EF lenses at four of the Company's manufacturing bases, including Canon Inc., Taiwan; Canon Opto (Malaysia) Sdn. Bhd.; and Oita Canon Inc. in southern Japan.

EF lens production surpassed the 10-million-unit mark in 1995, doubled to 20 million lenses in 2001, and went on to reach 30 million units in 2006 and 40 million units in 2008. Afterward, due to the rapid spread of EOS digital SLR cameras, production of EF lenses gained further momentum, crossing the 50-million-unit threshold in 2009, reaching 60 million units in January 2011, and hitting the 70-million-unit mark in October of the same year. In August 2012, lens production reached 80 million units and now, a little over nine months later, the company commemorates its latest manufacturing milestone of 90 million lenses.

Canon's proprietary EF lenses, launched in March 1987 along with the EOS SLR camera system, have continued to evolve since their introduction, leading the industry through the incorporation of a wide range of innovative technologies, including the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, a multi-layered diffractive optical (DO) element, and Subwavelength Structure Coating (SWC) anti-reflection technology.

With the introduction in May this year of the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x, super-telephoto zoom lens with a built-in 1.4x extender that makes possible a 200-560 mm focal length range, along with EF Cinema Lenses for digital cinematography, Canon's extensive EF lens-series lineup now comprises a total of 84 models.

Canon will continue refining its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technologies, striving to produce exceptional and reliable lenses and cameras that cater to the varying needs of photographers-from first-time users to advanced amateurs and professionals-while contributing to expanding the photographic and video imaging culture.

Canon U.S.A., Ron Howard And Bryce Dallas Howard Announce "Project Imaginat10n" Film Contest Where Five Consumer-Directed Films Will Premiere At The "Project Imaginat10n" Film Festival In Fall 2013

Now the Public Can Select 10 of the Winning Photos from Project Imaginat10n to Inspire Short Films, the same Creative Exercise as Eva Longoria, Jamie Foxx, James Murphy, Georgina Chapman and Biz Stone

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 24, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today the "Project Imaginat10n" Film Contest, which will provide the public with a unique opportunity to showcase their creativity and storytelling abilities by taking a seat in the director's chair.

Helmed by Ron Howard and Bryce Dallas Howard, filmmakers of all skill levels will each have the chance to embark on the same creative exercise as five celebrity directors - Eva Longoria (film and TV actress), Jamie Foxx (Academy Award(r) winner), Biz Stone (co-founder of Twitter), Georgina Chapman (designer and co-founder of Marchesa) and James Murphy (founder of LCD SOUNDSYSTEM) - all of whom are directing short films inspired from ten Project Imaginat10n winning photographs.

Selecting from the same pool of 91 winning photos, the challenge is to create a short film inspired by ten crowdsourced photos and based on ten storytelling themes: Character, Mood, Goal, Backstory, Setting, Obstacle, Relationship, The Unknown, Time and Discovery. The Discovery photo will be the same in each film, "Discovering limits," as selected by Ron Howard as a thematic tie. All 91 photos can be seen at imagination.usa.canon.com.

In 2011, Bryce Dallas Howard took part in a similar creative endeavor, "Project Imagin8ion," where she was mentored by her father, Ron Howard, to create a short film inspired by photographs. After selecting eight winning photos, Bryce directed "when you find me," an award-winning film about two sisters whose childhood bond is tested by a tragedy they are too young to understand.

As the first "graduating" director of the Project Imagin8ion experiment, Bryce will utilize her experience from "when you find me," to act as a mentor for other filmmakers - speaking at select film schools and revealing her tips in an online webisode series, "Bryce's Project Imaginat10n Film Contest Tutorial."

"Directing 'when you find me' was one of the most creatively rewarding endeavors of my career. In addition to the amazing experience of being mentored by my dad, the chance to collaborate with such a vast community of artists and photographers was game changing and challenged the very paradigm of the filmmaking I had grown accustomed to," said Bryce Dallas Howard. "My hope for the Project Imaginat10n film contest is that aspiring filmmakers will feel empowered to showcase their work and explore their own creativity. I'm thrilled to have this opportunity to engage with the filmmakers and support them as they embark on this powerful odyssey into creativity and collaboration."

Submissions will begin on June 4, 2013 at imagination.usa.canon.com (see Official Rules for details). A panel of judges will select twenty finalist films based on overall technical quality, originality, use of imagination and impression. Bryce Dallas Howard and Ron Howard will then select the final five winning films and package them with the five celebrity-directed films as "A Ron Howard Presentation." All ten films will be showcased at Canon's Project Imaginat10n Film Festival in fall 2013.

From Canon:

OKYO, April 22, 2013—Canon Inc. today announced that the company's interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and compact-system cameras) have consistently maintained the No. 1 share worldwide in terms of volume within the interchangeable-lens digital camera market for the 10-year period from 2003 to 2012.*1

In addition to the interchangeable lenses, Canon also develops its own key components—the CMOS image sensors and image processors—employed in the company's interchangeable-lens cameras, incorporating the most advanced of these technologies in its flagship EOS-1D series. By applying these technologies to other models as well, Canon has successfully created a powerful product lineup that effectively responds to the needs of a wide range of users, from professionals to entry-level users, which has enabled the company to maintain the top global share.

In 2003, the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Kiss Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D Digital in other regions), a compact and lightweight user-friendly camera that set the stage for growth in the digital SLR market while, at the same time, captured the top share of the global market. Since that time, Canon, in the company's ongoing pursuit of high image quality, has launched a number of models targeting advanced-amateur users that offer among the highest levels of performance for their class, including the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording.

In 2012, Canon celebrated the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the EOS system and marked its 10th consecutive year as the market's world leader. During the year, Canon launched the compact-system EOS M, aimed at expanding the company's entry-level user base, along with the EOS 6D, the world's smallest and lightest*2 digital SLR camera equipped with a 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor, which contributed to the growth of the advanced-amateur user segment.

This year, Canon introduced the EOS Kiss X7 (EOS Rebel SL1 or EOS 100D in other regions), the world's smallest and lightest*2 digital SLR camera equipped with an APS-C-size sensor, bolstering its product lineup with a model befitting the industry's top brand while targeting its 11th straight year as the world's market leader.

With a history of producing cameras that dates back to the company's founding in 1937, Canon will continue refining its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technologies, striving to produce exceptional and reliable lenses and cameras that cater to the varying needs of photographers—from first-time users to advanced amateurs and professionals—while contributing to expanding the photographic and video imaging culture.

Canon has just published a promo video for the new PowerShot N. While the camera looks interesting, I can't help but wonder if the "shutter ring" will be a welcomed change compared to a traditional shutter button.

Let us know what you think on our Facebook page.

B&H has the Canon PowerShot N available for preorder.
