September 28, 2022, Commack, NY - Tamron announces the launch of the 20-40mm F/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A062), a fast-aperture standard zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. The lens will be on sale October 27, 2022, at $699. However, due to the current global health crisis, the release date or product supply schedule could change.

The 20-40mm F2.8, TAMRON's latest innovation, is an unparalleled new fast-aperture standard zoom lens that can be easily carried around for everyday shooting for both still images and video. Designed for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras, the lens was created in aggressive pursuit of portability that is ideal for everyday use. Starting from 20mm at the ultra wide-angle end and covering up to 40mm in the standard focal range, it is the smallest and lightest in its class1. The 20-40mm F2.8 delivers beautiful images across the entire zoom range and is great for still photography and for creating vlogs and other video content. The lens incorporates TAMRON’s VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive), an AF drive system using the linear motor focus mechanism. The VXD boasts superior quietness and agile performance and achieves high-speed and high-precision autofocus. With an MOD (Minimum Object Distance) of just 6.7” and maximum magnification ratio 1:3.8 at the wide end, the lens provides exceptional close-range shooting capability, offering the added feature of wide macro photography.

At the longest zoom end, the lens offers a standard focal range of 40mm, handy for everyday shooting of snaps, portraits, and food photos. Meanwhile at the wide end, the ultra-wide 20mm focal length lets users enjoy a broad range of photography including stunning and powerful natural landscapes that make use of the unique ultra wide-angle perspective, something that cannot be expressed as readily with a fast-aperture standard zoom lens that starts at 24mm.

From Sony Electronics:

Sony Electronics Expands Cinema Line with New 4K Super 35 Camera for Future Filmmakers

LOS ANGELES, CA – September 28, 2022 – Sony Electronics Inc. is pleased to announce the newest addition to the brand's prestigious Cinema Line – the FX30 (model ILME-FX30). The new FX30 is a 4K Super 35 compact cinema camera that offers many professional features of the Cinema Line, such as Dual Base ISO, Log shooting modes, and user-imported LUTs (Look Up Tables) at a price point that appeals to many aspiring filmmakers.

In addition to introducing the new FX30, Sony announced two new CFexpress Type A Memory Cards – CEA-G320T and CEA-G640T. Both are large capacity cards that support high-speed performance with a maximum writing speed.

"The new FX30 is a great fit for a wide range of filmmakers," said Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. "As part of our Cinema Line, it is an attractive addition for seamless integration into large productions. Additionally, by incorporating many professional features found in our flagship cinema cameras, it is a perfect camera for up-and-coming filmmakers that are working with tight budgets."

Creating a Cinematic Look

The FX30 offers next-generation filmmakers cinematic expression with the latest imaging systems. It features a new back-illuminated 20.1 megapixels APS-C Exmor R™ CMOS sensor (Super 35 format) with a dual base ISO (800/2500) to deliver high sensitivity, low noise, and 14+1 stops of latitude.

The FX30 supports a variety of video recording codecs. It can shoot in high frame rates, including 4K at 120fps and full HD at 240fps2. The FX30 also features the ability to shoot 4K Super 35 (16:9) by oversampling from 6K at up to 60fps. Both 16:9 recording modes can shoot at 10-bit 4:2:2 while the HDMI Type-A port outputs 4K, 16-bit RAW3 for an external recorder4.

Like the rest of the Cinema Line, the FX30 features Log shooting modes by enabling Cine El, Cine El Quick, and Flexible ISO modes for recording with the S-Log3 gamma curve, which allows more flexibility when color grading. All three modes allow video shooting while monitoring with an appropriate LUT to preview the final image. In addition, the FX30 includes a selection of built-in cinematic looks, such as Sony's S-Cinetone™, and can shoot single stills. The camera offers advanced image processing capabilities with the BIONZ XR processing engine for natural gradations and realistic color reproduction.

Designed to Support Creators' Needs

The FX30 features Sony’s fast and reliable still and video autofocus, with settings including:

  • Real-time Eye AF (human, animal or bird5)
  • Real-time Tracking
  • Detailed AF settings
  • AF Assist6

Creatives also have more control when using the Focus Map7, which makes it easy to visualize depth of field, and Breathing Compensation8 to offer a stable angle of view when focusing. The camera includes effective stabilization for run and gun shoots using Active Mode9 thanks to the optical in-body 5-axis image stabilization. The FX30 also includes time code sync10.

The FX30 incorporates other features that retain the spirit of the Cinema Line, including:

  • New customizable list-style main menu screen for quick access to frequently used items
  • New standby movie screen that provides an unobstructed view of the subject
  • Buttons and dials dedicated to movie shooting

The FX30 also includes added functionality to assist with the creative workflow, such as post-production editing using embedded LUT, and EI metadata11. ? This metadata is available using the latest version of Sony’s Catalyst Prepare12 or Catalyst Browse applications. A new "Catalyst Prepare Plugin" for Adobe Premiere Pro was released in August.

Easy Operation and a Compact Form Factor

Compact and lightweight, the FX30 has a flat-top design with threaded accessory attachment points, making it easy to use for shooting handheld, capturing low-angle shots, mounting on a gimbal, or adding accessories. The FX30 also features an XLR handle unit13, which can be used to capture low-angle shots and also allows filmmakers to capture crystal clear audio through various audio inputs, including two XLR audio inputs and a 3.5 mm stereo mini jack for 4-channel recording. External microphones can be connected directly to the camera via the Multi Interface Shoe or microphone jack. The FX30 also features an internal stereo microphone for audio recording.

The FX30 are equipped with two memory card slots that are compatible with both CFexpress Type A cards and SDXC/SDHC cards, bringing wide range of shooting experiences to filmmakers. The FX30 is also compatible with the newly announced large capacity CFexpress Type A memory cards.14

The FX30 pairs advanced performance with outstanding reliability. It features an innovative heat dissipation structure for uninterrupted 4K/60p recording, reliable power for extended recording, and a durable magnesium alloy chassis. A comprehensive selection of E-mount lenses, high-performance microphones, and other essential components offers extraordinarily flexible systems for a broad range of creative needs.

Sony Future Filmmaker Awards

The new FX30 is an ideal choice for filmmakers actively working on or considering entering the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards, a major new annual awards program for short films. Sponsored by Sony and free to enter, the Awards set out to elevate original voices from around the globe with a fresh perspective on storytelling. "This update was originally released and then suspended on August 24, 2022, because some products could not operate properly after the update to Ver.1.10. However, the update has resumed with countermeasures, and we are happy to bring all of its added functionality to the Alpha 7 IV."

Note: "This update is executed via SD card/CFExpress card, and users will need to ensure the Alpha 7 IV is running or updated to Ver.1.05 first, before updating to v1.1. Instructions can be found in the links in the release."

Here is the original press release from Sony:

New Alpha 7 IV Firmware Update Enables Lossless RAW File Options and Improved Accuracy and Operability

SAN DIEGO, CA – August 23, 2022 – Sony Electronics Inc. today announced the v1.1 firmware update for the Alpha 7 IV full-frame mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, adding Lossless Compressed RAW in three sizes for still images, shutter speed and ISO setting retention, touch shutter function, improved Eye AF (autofocus) accuracy and more. ? ?

The update adds Lossless Compressed RAW files in S, M and L (small, medium or large) file sizes – a highly requested feature. Selecting L size preserves the same image quality as an uncompressed RAW format while significantly reducing the file size. The M and S sizes record fewer pixels than the L size, providing even smaller RAW file sizes.

Alpha 7 IV v1.1 allows photographers to retain shutter speed and ISO settings for flash photography. This newest update also offers a Touch Shutter Function and improves the accuracy of the Eye AF feature.

Other updates in the Alpha 7 IV v1.1 include:

  • The ability to record the camera's serial number in the metadata of video files
  • Improved operability of Wi-Fi connections
  • A one-minute setting added to Power Save by Monitor menu
  • The ability to brighten the viewfinder display according to the ambient brightness
  • Improved operational stability of the camera

From Canon Marketing Japan Inc. (translated):

To customers using the continuous recording function for professional video cameras and digital cinema cameras

Thank you for using Canon products.

We have found that the following phenomenon rarely occurs in the professional video camera "XF605" under specific usage conditions. We have also confirmed the possibility of this phenomenon occurring in the EOS C70 and EOS R5 C digital cinema cameras equipped with the same functions. There have been no reports of this phenomenon occurring with the EOS C70 and EOS R5 C.

We sincerely apologize for any inconvenience and concern caused to customers using this product. In the future, we will continue to implement thorough quality control so that our customers can use our products with peace of mind. Thank you for your understanding.

Phenomenon

Repeatedly starting and stopping normal recording while the constant recording function is set may occasionally cause the camera to become inoperable. In addition, it has been confirmed that phenomena such as "FAN error" display and media access lamp blinking may occur at the same time as the operation becomes impossible.

* This phenomenon does not occur if the constant recording function is not set.

The constant recording function is a function that can be set only when MP4 is selected as the main recording setting, and constantly records images on one SD card without interlocking the REC switch. Products

Professional video camera "XF605": Products whose serial number has a "2" or earlier in the seventh digit from the left

* The digital cinema cameras "EOS C70" and "EOS R5 C" that may cause this phenomenon are as follows.

"EOS C70": Products with firmware version 1.0.3.1 or earlier

"EOS R5 C": Products with firmware version 1.0.1.1 or earlier

About correspondence

We apologize for the inconvenience, but please download the latest XF605 firmware and update it.

In addition, we are preparing to release firmware that corrects the above phenomenon for the two models of digital cinema cameras.

This can be ideal for shooting reality TV shows or even sports when camera operators want to discreetly zoom in on the action. The CR-N700 also features a Night Mode, allowing operators to capture footage in near darkness thanks to a removable built-in IR cut filter. Along with the HDR formats in PQ or HLG, broadcasters can capture virtually uncompromised footage in various lighting environments.

Breaking new ground for Canon’s line-up of PTZ cameras, the CR-N700 is equipped with fast, intelligent and extremely accurate focusing thanks to Canon’s proprietary Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology with advanced EOS iTR AF X. This deep learning autofocus locks onto a subject’s head, to track them as they move and even when they turn their face away. Eye Detection AF locks onto the subject’s pupil for even greater precision, while the Face Priority AF allows operators to prioritize a specific individual. This can be ideal for scenarios where it is imperative to stay locked onto the anchor throughout.

Superb Connectivity, Simple Workflows

As with Canon’s entire range of PTZ cameras, the CR-N700 supports multiple protocols to integrate with existing workflows seamlessly. Designed to fit into the diverse production ecosystems of broadcasters, the CR-N700 features SRT and NDI|HXii protocols for high-quality 4K video streams, while FreeD enables integration with virtual productions. Broadcasters can easily create multi-camera setups that meet their needs with these protocols, and with Canon’s XC protocol, it is possible to integrate the CR-N700 alongside other Canon Cinema EOS cameras such as the EOS C500 Mark II, EOS C300 Mark III, or professional camcorders including the XF605iii for a truly versatile setup. It’s even possible to match other Canon cameras’ look with Canon Log 3 and Wide Dynamic Range picture settings.

The flexible connectivity options include 12G-SDI and 3G-SDI, HDMI or IP, which allow the seamless transmission of 4K60P, for high-quality, consistent broadcasts. The CR-N700 also includes professional dual XLR audio inputs, Time code, and GEN-LOCK, for different production needs.

Enhanced control

Canon’s latest PTZ camera offers the same intuitive control as other models in the line. The advanced drive mechanism enables movements as slow and precise as 0.1° per second, meaning operators can capture cinematic shots. Compatible with both Canon’s RC-IP100 controller and Remote Camera Control Application, as well as selected third-party controllers, this further simplifies integration with existing production setups. With the CR-N700’s crop function, broadcasters can take two separate feeds from a single PTZ camera. They can select up to two regions of interest within the 4K frame and output them as a separate feeds in HD resolutions. This feature is perfect for productions with limited PTZ cameras on site.

Especially for those of following the camera industry for many years, the lack of third-party autofocus lenses for the Canon RF mount seems unusual.

We expected to, minimally, have RF-mount AF lenses from the big lens companies like Sigma and Tamron by now. In talking to marketing reps at these companies, no comments were provided, though I (and likely everyone else) sense a strong desire to have products in this market.

Another data point is that the RF-mount version of the Rokinon (Samyang) AF 14mm F2.8 Lens (the mount versioned reviewed here) has gone missing. Also, there are no other brand RF-mount AF lenses available at B&H.

A statement German Photografix Magazine attributes to Canon Germany confirms what many of us were thinking:

"SHENZHEN JUEYING TECHNOLOGY CO.LTD, manufactures auto focus lenses for Canon RF mount under the brand name “Viltrox”. Canon believes that these products infringe their patent and design rights and has therefore requested the company to stop all activities that infringe Canon’s intellectual property rights."

That statement provides an improved understanding of where the third-party RF mount AF lens market currently stands. However, it does not tell us what the future holds.

Will Canon begin disclosing the RF mount specifications under licensing agreements? That is the position Sony is currently taking (and likely profiting from). Or, will the RF mount remain a protected, proprietary, closed system?

From Sony Electronics Inc.:

Sony Electronics Launches the FR7, the World’s First*1 Pan-Tilt-Zoom Camera to Combine a Full-frame Image Sensor, Lens Interchangeability, and Remote Shooting Functionality

Sony’s Cinema Line PTZ camera opens new creative and cinematic possibilities for content creators, from filmmakers to live event or music video producers

LOS ANGELES, CA – September 6, 2022 – Sony Electronics Inc. announces today the latest addition to its Cinema Line, the ILME-FR7, an E-mount interchangeable lens camera with a full-frame image sensor and built-in pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) functionality. Its versatile remote control and cinematic features open creative possibilities in studio, live production and filmmaking settings.

A high-performance full-frame image sensor and the expressive scope of Sony’s extensive E-mount lens*2 lineup work with remote pan/tilt/zoom control, high flexibility in zoom capability and wide angle shooting to break through location and space limitations. It also offers the cinematic look and operability that have made Sony digital cinema cameras push the boundaries of the filmmaking industry, plus versatile connectivity and efficient multi camera workflow support.

“The cinematic look and feel is rapidly becoming the norm in broadcasting and live production as it opens up new ways to tell a narrative,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “In parallel, over the last 2 years, we’ve seen a steep rise in content created remotely or in small locations where access is difficult. At Sony, we are always listening to our customers. We are thrilled to announce the FR7 that combines the flexibility of a standard PTZ camera with stunning visuals through advanced cinematic features.”

Uncompromised Image Quality in a PTZ Form Factor

The FR7 features a back-illuminated 35mm full-frame CMOS image sensor Exmor R™ with approximately 10.3 effective megapixels and wide 15+ stop latitude*3 in a pan tilt zoom (PTZ) camera for the first time. In addition to wide dynamic range, low noise, and cinematic full frame bokeh, this amazing sensor also delivers high sensitivity that allows ISO to be expanded up to 409,600*4 when shooting in low light.

The FR7 features Sony’s E-mount and can mount a wide range of E-mount lenses*2, including the G Master™ series with stunning resolution and bokeh effect. A choice of focal lengths ranging from 12 mm to 1200 mm*5 gives users comprehensive creative control.

A number of Cinema Line features are built into the camera to deliver a cinematic look and feel including:

The Sensitivity setting allows ISO to be expanded up to 409,600*4 when shooting in low light.

A 15+ stop latitude*3 allows smooth highlights and low noise levels.

A number of preset scene files are included including S-Cinetone for natural mid-tones that are essential to healthy-looking skin color, plus soft colors and gorgeous highlights. Since the target look can be created while shooting, time can be saved in post-production. In the Cine EI mode, base sensitivity can be set to either ISO 800 or ISO 12800 to match lighting conditions and to minimize noise while maintaining a consistent look. This mode is ideal for post-production, as it allows the use of Sony’s original S-Log3 gamma, wide S-Gamut3 and S-Gamut3.Cine color spaces.

Shooting up to 120fps 4K (QFHD) and 240 fps FHD*6 slow-motion is possible, again creating that emotional possibility offered by a cinematic look.

Easy Operation for Storytelling from New Angles

With a new dedicated web application, pan, tilt, zoom, focus, record, playback, and all camera settings can be intuitively controlled from a tablet or computer web browser. Multiple people can monitor FR7 footage remotely at the same time. Multi camera monitoring is also enabled, allowing multiple cameras to be viewed remotely on one device. With its integrated remotely controllable pan/tilt mechanism, the FR7 can be mounted on a tripod, on a ceiling with the dedicated CIB-PCM1, or in other locations with limited access so that subjects can be unobtrusively followed and recorded from unique viewpoints. It is also compatible with Sony’s RM-IP500 remote controller*7 for multi-camera production, expanding creative potential while reducing the need for dedicated staff in production studios and other shooting situations. A single RM-IP500 unit can remotely control up to 100 PTZ cameras and provide precious joystick-controlled pan, tilt, and zoom operation. ?

The supplied infrared remote controller will also support the FR7’s simple operation.

Variable PTZ Movements for Smooth Camera Work

Pan and tilt speed can be continuously varied from 0.02 degrees per second to 60 degrees per second, supporting a wide range of stable and smooth camera movements. The pan angle range is from -170° to +170°, and the tilt angle range is from -30° to +195°.

Up to 100 Preset Camera Positions

The FR7 can memorize up to 100 camera position presets.*8 The built-in web application and optional RM-IP500 remote controller allow up to 100 camera position presets to be recalled. Presets include camera direction, zoom, and focus, and can be recalled at the touch of a button.

The FR7 will also support S700 protocol via Ethernet, enabling control of this product from Sony’s Remote Control Panel (RCP) and Master Setup Unit (MSU) with a firmware update*9.

Real-time Eye AF and Real-time Tracking

Fast Hybrid AF and pan/tilt/zoom functionalities combine to focus on static or fast-moving subjects precisely and smoothly over a wide area, to avoid blurred images, even when a shallow depth of field is used.

The integrated BIONZ XR™ engine realizes detection performance for pinpoint eye focus even when subjects are looking at steep angles, allowing the operator to concentrate on composing the best shot. Touch Focus can be used to initiate focusing with Real-time Tracking on the desired subject when using the FR7’s web application, with Real-time Eye AF if an eye is detected.

Sony’s Built-in Electronically Controlled Variable ND Filter

The built-in electronic variable ND filter allows seamless ND adjustment. An Auto ND function keeps exposure constant by automatically adjusting the ND filter to match changing light. Remote control is also possible, allowing exposure control at a distance from the camera.

Versatile Interfaces for Various Production Workflows

The FR7 is built to integrate and adapt to many workflow scenarios, from simple plug and play to more complex high-end productions, thanks to a comprehensive selection of video inputs and outputs, IP streaming, power supply, and synchronization with other devices.

Internal XAVC Recording and External RAW Output

A rare feature in a PTZ camera, the FR7 also features dual media slots that support CFexpress Type A and SDXC memory cards. The ability to record high-quality XAVC-I footage with metadata makes the FR7 an excellent choice for a wide variety of video production applications.

CFexpress Type A cards are particularly well suited to high bitrate 4K movie production, with high-speed write capability that ensures stable recording of high volume, high frame rate data. Simultaneous recording, relay recording, interval recording, and proxy recording are also supported. The SDI output can deliver a 16-bit RAW signal to a compatible external recorder (sold separately).

Professional Video and Audio Interface

HDMI Type A and 12G-SDI connectors are provided for video output as well as optical output*10 for long transmission.

The AUDIO IN (XLR type 5-pin) connector will receive signal from an external microphone or audio device. AUDIO CH-1 and CH-2 use a single connector.

Ethernet Connectivity

Camera control, video and audio transfer, and power supply can also be carried out via a single LAN cable, simplifying cabling requirements.

The FR7 LAN (network) connector supports a variety of streaming protocols, including RTSP, SRT and NDI ® |HX*11, perfect for working in an IP based environment.

The FR7 can be powered from an external PoE++ (Power over Ethernet Plus Plus)*12 device via a standard network cable, eliminating the need for separate power supply cabling.

Multicamera Production Synchronization

The Timecode IN connector receives timecode for synchronization with an external device, while the GENLOCK receives synchronization signals in multi camera setups.

Additionally, red/green tally lights are provided on the camera’s side panels, allowing performers and staff to easily identify the on-air and preview cameras in multi camera setups in studio or on location. ?

Pricing and Availability

The new FR7 will be available in November 2022 for approximately $9699.99 USD and $12,399.99 CAD. The FR7K, which includes the FR7 and SELP28135G lens, will be available for $12,199.99 USD and $15,699.99CAD while the CIB-PCM1 ceiling bracket will be available for $119.99 USD and $159.99 CAD. It will be sold at a variety of Sony's authorized dealers throughout North America.
