From Elinchrom:

The new ELB 500 TTL is the most powerful and portable TTL light ever designed for adventurous portrait photographers shooting both in studio and on location.

Today, Elinchrom introduces the ELB 500 TTL, an incredibly portable and powerful battery pack combining 500Ws of power with a feature set including TTL, High Speed Sync, Active Charging, Full Asymmetry with built-in Skyport designed to empower the workflow of portrait photographers both in studio and on location.

Speed & Simplicity with TTL
The ELB 500 TTL is ideal for photographers who find themselves in time sensitive shooting environments where the inherent speed of TTL lets them capture images at the speed of life or for those who simply prefer the convenience of TTL.

The “Manual Lock” functionality allows photographers to get an initial “lock” on their exposure in TTL and then switch to manual mode to further adjust their exposure as they need or to explore different creative effects.

500 Ws Power in an Incredibly Portable Package
The ELB 500 TTL is powerful enough to overpower the sun, delivers 400 full power flashes on a single charge and has a fast recycling time of 2 seconds at max power, ensuring you won’t miss an important moment.

The ELB 500 TTL head is smaller than speedlites yet delivers 10 times more power. It is lightweight enough to be mounted on a camera bracket or boom arm while on location.

The Versatility of HSS, Asymmetry & Active Charging
High Speed Sync lets photographers freeze motion with incredible sharpness, create a narrow depth of field, or darken overly bright backgrounds using a high shutter speed (up to 1/8000sec).

With the new ELB 500 TTL, not having to worry about flash sync limitations or the time of day makes for a very liberating creative experience.

Full asymmetry across two lamp connections provides a broader range of creative control.

Active Charging provides the freedom to charge the battery while actively shooting in studio, making it perfect for an uninterrupted workflow.

The ELB 500 TTL’s native Q-Mount (Quadra Mount) is seamlessly compatible with Elinchrom’s super-portable “Portalite” series of softboxes and can work with any of your favorite full-sized Elinchrom light modifiers.

Ease & Intuitiveness of a Brilliant User Interface
When the pressure is on to get the shot, no one ever wants to fumble with controls.

The large OLED display and intuitive controls of the ELB 500 TTL makes using the pack a pleasure.

Convenience & Control with Skyport and Phottix ODIN
The ELB 500 TTL features built-in Skyport, Elinchrom’s reliable and easy to use wireless system as well as Odin II functionality from Phottix. This lets a photographer trigger and control virtually any light or combination of lights in their collection with either Elinchrom or Phottix transmitters right from their camera.

The Skyport Plus HS becomes an Elinchrom Transmitter Pro with TTL
Elinchrom is also pleased to announce a firmware update adding TTL control to the Skyport Plus HS for Canon and Nikon, other brands will follow. This new firmware update is available now.

The Heritage, Quality & Value of Elinchrom
The ELB 500 TTL is the newest compact flash solution in a long line of innovative and ultra-reliable Elinchrom products that represent a decades-long commitment to crafting the highest quality lighting tools while providing superb value to their customers.

The ELB 500 TTL represents an optimal feature set for portrait photographers and is ideal for those looking to trade up to a more powerful option to their speedlights, trading over from less full-featured options or searching for the very best value in the category.

B&H has the Elinchrom ELB 500 TTL available for preorder.

In September 2016, Canon announced its flagship M-series camera, the M5. Almost 18 months later, Canon announced the M50, a more-similar-than-different camera with a feature many M5 customers craved – 4K video recording. Even though the M50 is positioned lower than the M5 in Canon's M-series lineup, I think you'll be surprised to see just how close these cameras are to one another. Instead of siblings divided by years, they're more like fraternal twins.

Let's look at these two mirrorless camera offerings from Canon to see which might represent the best camera for your kit.

Canon EOS M5 and M50 Shared Primary Features:

  • Dual Pixel CMOS AF Sensor*
  • Resolution: 6000 x 4000 pixels (24 MP)
  • Crop Factor: 1.6x (APS-C sensor)
  • Exposure Compensation: +/-3 EV in 1/3 stop increments
  • Auto Exposure Bracketing (AEB): 3 shots, +/- 2 EV, 1/3-stop increments
  • Shutter Speed Range: 30 - 1/4000 sec (1/3 stop increments)
  • Viewfinder: 0.39-type OLED electronic viewfinder, approx. 2,360,000 dots
  • Flash x-sync: 1/200 sec
  • Pop-up Flash: GN 5, 15mm coverage
  • Memory Card Support: SD, SDHC, SDXC (UHS-I compatible)
  • Built-in Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and NFC

* Dual Pixel CMOS sensor AF benefits unavailable during 4K recording (M50).

Primary Advantages of the Canon EOS M5:

  • Larger Auto ISO Range: 100 - 25600 vs. 100 - 6400
  • Larger RAW Buffer: 17 vs. 10
  • Larger / Higher Resolution LCD Screen: 8.0 cm (3.2”) ClearView II touchscreen LCD (TFT), approx. 1,620,000 dots. vs. 7.5 cm (3.0”) touchscreen LCD (TFT), approx. 1,040,000 dots.
  • More Customization Options: 12 customizable buttons/ dials vs. 9
  • Longer Battery Life: approx. 295 shots (420 shots with Eco Mode On) vs. Approx. 235 shots (370 shots with Eco Mode On)
  • Wider Operating Environment: 14 – 104 °F (-10 – 40 °C) vs. 32 – 104 °F (0 – 40°C)
  • Compatible with E3, infrared and Bluetooth remotes vs. Bluetooth only

Primary Advantages of the Canon EOS M50:

  • New Image Processor: DIGIC 8 vs. DIGIC 7
  • More AF Points: max 143 vs. 49
  • More Sensitive AF: EV -2 – 18 vs. EV -1 – 18
  • Expanded AF Area: max 88% x 100% (W x H) sensor coverage vs. 80% x 80%
  • Better Face Tracking AF: eye detection vs. standard face tracking
  • Larger Metering Range: EV 0 – 20 vs. EV 1 – 20
  • Higher Resolution Video: 3840 x 2160 (4K UHD, 23.98 fps) / 1920 x 1080 (Full HD, 59.94 fps) vs. 1920 x 1080 (Full HD, 59.94 fps) only
  • More White Balance Options: ambience/white priority vs. ambience only
  • Faster Continuous Shooting: 10 fps (7.4 fps with Servo AF) vs. 9 (7 with Servo AF)
  • Vari-angle LCD vs. tilting only
  • Lower cost

Who should opt for the Canon EOS M5?

Unlike many of our comparisons, the feature gap between the EOS M5 and the EOS M50 is quite narrow, relatively speaking. However, there are a few differences between the two cameras that may prove pivotal in one's decision making process.

If you're a seasoned photographer who appreciates having a myriad of easily accessible controls, then you'll really appreciate the M5's user interface. To see what I mean, flip between the two cameras in our Camera Top View Comparison. The two most prominent M5 features you'll likely notice are the Exposure Compensation and Quick Control dials, both of which are missing on the M50. Also absent on the M50 are the M5's custom shooting modes, located on the Mode Dial.

Those shooting in cold conditions will certainly benefit from the M5's wider environmental operating range and longer battery life. Many will appreciate the M5's higher resolution LCD, larger RAW buffer and plentiful remote options.

Who should opt for the Canon EOS M50?

In short – everyone else. The M50's feature set will make it especially handy for vacations, social gatherings and general purpose photography and videography. With its advanced and more sensitive AF system, capturing in-focus images of human subjects – even in low light – will be easier than ever so you can focus less on photography and more on the time spent with family and friends. Although you don't get the benefits of Dual Pixel CMOS Movie Servo AF in 4K mode, the ability to shoot 4K combined with the M50's vari-angle LCD and small size/weight will make it an extremely useful tool for filmmaking, especially for vloggers or one-man crews. If outputting to 1080p video, set a tripod-mounted M50 to record 4K video and then pan around the frame in post for high quality b-roll, or otherwise reap the benefits of automatic and smooth Dual Pixel Movie Servo AF when recording 1080p video (the latter benefit is identical to the M5).

Summary

As we mentioned in the beginning of this comparison, these cameras are very similar. While their names may suggest a clear hierarchy, the cameras' feature sets belie simplistic categorization. Both cameras will likely serve most interested consumers very well, with the handful of differences above – and the benefits they bring to select shooting conditions – will ultimately determine which camera fits one's needs best.

On February 25, Canon USA announced two new cameras – the EOS M50 and the Rebel T7 (aka 2000D). However, another Canon camera was also introduced that day, but it wasn't announced in North America. The EOS Rebel 4000D (which will eventually be called the "T100" in North America) was announced by Canon UK alongside the Rebel T7/2000D, and the body is positioned as the lowest rung (and lowest price option) in Canon's DSLR lineup. The only reason we know the EOS 4000D will be called the EOS T100 in North America is because the camera body was listed in a recent Digital Photo Professional software update posted by Canon USA.

So what's the difference between the Rebel T7/2000D and the T100/2000D? Here's how the two bodies compare:

Rebel T7/2000D Specificaitons

  • 24.1MP APS-C CMOS image sensor
  • DIGIC4+ processor
  • ISO range from 100-6400 (expandable to 12800)
  • Full HD 1080p video up to 30fps and Video Snapshot mode
  • 3fps continuous shooting
  • 9-point autofocus
  • 3” (7.5 cm) 920k-dot TFT LCD monitor with inbuilt Feature Guide
  • Scene Intelligent Auto mode
  • Creative filters
  • Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity

Rebel T100/4000D Specificaitons

  • 18MP APS-C CMOS image sensor
  • DIGIC4+ processor
  • ISO range from 100-6400 (expandable to 12800)
  • Full HD 1080p video up to 30fps and Video Snapshot mode
  • 3fps continuous shooting
  • 9-point autofocus
  • 2.7” (7.5 cm) 920k-dot TFT LCD monitor with inbuilt Feature Guide
  • Scene Intelligent Auto mode
  • Creative filters
  • Wi-Fi

Not mentioned in the Rebel T100's spec list – a plastic lens mount – has been incorporated to keep production costs to a minumum.

As for when the Canon EOS Rebel T100 will be available in North America... it's hard to say. Even though the Rebel T7 was announced on Monday of this week, it's still nowhere to be found at retailers, and the T100, according to Canon USA's marketing department, doesn't even exist (yet).

We were pretty impressed when we saw a demonstration of the Canon Speedlite 470EX-AI's Auto-Intelligent bounce feature in action. The way the flash head swiveled and tilted to find the optimal bounce angle was a bit mesmerizing. Unfortunately, the feature isn't compatible with Canon's entire lineup of cameras.

Site visitor Dave pointed out this Speedlite 470EX-AI Major Function Compatibility Chart which shows that the 470EX-AI's highlight feature – Auto-Intelligent Bounce – is only compatible with the following Canon cameras:

Canon Cameras Compatible with 470EX-AI Auto-Intelligent Bounce

  • EOS-1D X Mark II
  • EOS 5DS, 5DS R
  • EOS 5D Mark IV
  • EOS 6D Mark II
  • EOS 7D Mark II
  • EOS 80D
  • EOS 77D
  • EOS REBEL T6s
  • EOS REBEL T7i
  • EOS REBEL T6i
  • EOS REBEL SL2
  • EOS M50

If you're currently using any other Canon DSLR or M-eries camera, including the EOS 5D Mark III, 6D or 70D, you'll only have access to the Semi-Auto Bounce feature where you manually set the bounce angle and the flash maintains that specific angle as you rotate the camera.

Another thing to consider before getting the 470EX-AI flash is that it is not radio-enabled and is not a master flash. However, it can act as a wireless slave via Canon's older optical triggering technology.

B&H has the Canon Speedlite 470EX-AI Flash available for preorder.

While this image was created to illustrate one of the unique capabilities of the lens being used, I thought I'd share the process behind creating the wedding ring, Bible, love verse and heart shadow photograph.

Obviously, to create an image similar to this, you need a ring and a book. Most large books and round rings can be used, but a wedding ring is the most common type of ring photographed and the Bible then becomes a very appropriate book for holding the ring. Note that if the ring is not round, creating a heart-shaped shadow immediately becomes more difficult, if not impossible. The heart-shaped shadow is not required, but ... it too is very appropriate for a wedding ring photo.

Love is the strong theme we are building on here and 1 Corinthians 13:4 is a favorite verse for this theme. While all Bibles will have this verse in them, not all Bibles will have this verse in an appropriate position on the page.

Getting the ring to stand up without a form of adhesive is another challenge. Doing so is easiest with some curl toward the inside of the pages, supporting the ring higher on its sides. The amount of curl also influences the heart shadow's shape.

This verse is closer to the end of the Bible than the beginning, meaning that there are more pages to the left than the right, creating unbalance. This makes creating the curves needed for the ring to sit in the pages somewhat more challenging, a challenge I met with a pair of A-clamps. My ill-designed-for-photography clamp jaws were red and required some black gaffer tape to eliminate the red showing in reflections on the ring. Reflections such as this are easy to miss when photographing, so be sure to check images of reflective subjects carefully.

Creating a shadow with an obvious shape requires hard light. This means the light source must be small in size relative to the source of the shadow. The smaller and farther away the light source is, the harder the shadow will become.

The right angle of the back-lighting is necessary to create the heart-shaped shadow in front of the ring. Aligning the flash with the crease between the pages will create a symmetric-shaped heart (if the pages are equally curved). The higher the flash, the shorter the heart. Figure out what works best for your composition.

Try handholding the flash and moving it around until you see the results you want. If using E-TTL and the camera's self-timer, the pre-flash will give you a preview of the shadow and give you a moment to adjust it prior to the picture being taken. Simply test-firing the flash will also help accomplish this task. Once you know where you want the flash positioned, fix it in place.

There are a million methods of holding a flash in place. I happened to have a lens box the right height at my immediate disposal and ... I simply used it. The box was not an especially secure option, so I had to be careful.

I wanted a hard shadow, but I didn't want the image to appear harshly lit. Since my working space was tight, I went high-tech with white copier/printer paper reflectors. I gaffer-taped one piece under the lens and another over the flash. Because rings are reflective, the paper reflectors were especially helpful in illuminating the front of it.

Bibles have a lot of pages and the pages are usually made thin for a compact and light overall book size and weight. Thin pages can become somewhat transparent and other print may bleed through the page being photographed. You can put a white paper under the pages, but that does not keep the print on the reverse side of the page being photographed from showing and this strategy potentially increases emphasis on that print. Find a Bible with thicker pages if you feel this issue is negatively impacting your results. The light bleed-through I encountered did not bother me.

I was reviewing the Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8L Tilt-Shift Lens, a superb product photography lens, and was looking for an interesting subject. Especially with its macro capability combined with the tilt movement, this lens can draw a viewer's eye to the intended subject and to illustrate this ability, the ring image concept shared here worked perfectly. Tilting the lens fully upward (10°) permitted the camera to be used at a relatively high position while creating a shallow slice of in-focus area that nicely encompasses the ring and its heart shadow along with the verse intended to be emphasized.

When one views this image, their eye is instantly drawn to the in-focus subjects.

Here is the setup:

Wedding Ring, Bible, Love Verse and Heart Shadow Photograph

The Canon wireless flash system made this lighting setup very easy. Hopefully you "love" the result!

While I didn't create this image with the WPPI show in mind, the timing seems appropriate.
