Canon, Inc. claims the No. 1 position:

Canon celebrates 21st consecutive year of No. 1 share of global interchangeable-lens digital camera market

TOKYO, February 20, 2024—Canon Inc. announced today that the company's interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and mirrorless cameras) have maintained the No. 1 share 1 of the global market for 21 consecutive years from 2003 to 2023.

Canon’s EOS series of interchangeable lens digital cameras are imaging systems based on the basic concept of "Speed, Comfort, and High Image Quality," for which the company has developed proprietary key components, including CMOS image sensors, the DIGIC image processors, and interchangeable lenses. Putting together a wide-ranging product lineup—from high-performance flagship models that are highly trusted by professionals to entry-level models that allow users to enjoy full-scale shooting with easy operation, as well as a rich selection of over 115 2 RF and EF series lenses that make possible a wealth of creative expression—Canon continues to support the diverse needs of customers.

During the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Kiss Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D in other regions) in September 2003. By launching this groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, Canon spurred growth in the digital SLR market, capturing the top share of the global market and heralding the age of digital SLR cameras. Since that time, Canon has continued to launch a range of groundbreaking products, including the professional-model EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording. Canon’s desire to further expand the boundaries of visual expression led to its next-generation EOS R System, launched in October 2018, that includes the full-frame mirrorless camera EOS R5—the first camera to feature 8K video recording 3—released in July 2020 and the EOS R3 in November 2021, which features tracking of fast-moving subjects and continuous shooting performance. In addition, Canon launched the EOS VR System, designed to record video for virtual reality content, in December 2021.

In 2023, Canon led demand for mirrorless cameras and lenses by further expanding its lineup of EOS R series cameras and lenses. This expanded lineup included the EOS R50 (released in March 2023), an APS-C size mirrorless camera complete with easy-to-use and convenient functions, the EOS R8 (released in April 2023), a full-frame camera that is both small and lightweight while demonstrating high performance and the EOS R100 (released in June 2023), an APS-C size mirrorless camera that even beginner photographers can use to enjoy full-fledged shooting, and 9 RF lenses 4.

Additionally, Canon-brand cameras comprised the number one share5 of Rugby World Cup France 2023, demonstrating that they have earned the deep trust of professional photographers. Based on the support of this wide range of customers, Canon managed to secure the No. 1 share of the global market for the 21st consecutive year.

Canon will continue to refine its proprietary imaging technologies while bringing fulfillment and excitement to people’s daily lives as well as promoting the spread of photo and video culture by providing products, services, and solutions that meet its customers’ diverse needs.

2 Types of lenses sold vary according to each market. Includes 4 types of extenders. Among lenses announced as of February 19, 2024.

Go big! From Canon USA:

Achieve Exquisite Prints for Photo and Fine Art with Three New imagePROGRAF PRO Series Models

New inkjet printers with LUCIA PRO II ink designed to deliver an expanded dark area gamut, excellent light resistance and improved scratch resistance over previous models

MELVILLE, N.Y., January 25, 2024 – A trio of 11-color plus chroma optimizer inkjet models for the large-format imagePROGRAF Series, the new imagePROGRAF 60-inch PRO-6600, 44-inch PRO-4600 and 24-inch PRO-2600 models, were announced today by Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions.

Designed for photography and fine art, the new imagePROGRAF PRO line features the newly developed LUCIA PRO II1 pigment ink designed to help improve the image quality from previous models while also enhancing resistance to light. Improved black density on art paper was achieved by changing the formulation and material of matte black ink, the color gamut of the dark region was expanded by the adoption of a newly designed image table. The new ink set can also work to help produce and preserve prints as a crystalline wax has been added to the ink, giving the printed surface better resistance to abrasion-caused scratches on glossy and semi-glossy media. The reformulated Chroma Optimizer is designed to give the surface a clear coat of transparent ink that helps suppress bronze phenomena and helps reduce uneven glossiness.

“The additions of the three printers to the imagePROGRAF Series can be very helpful in regard to delivering exquisite print and impeccable details while providing excellent light resistance,” said Larry Chen, a professional car and automotive photographer and a Canon Explorer of Light since 2020. “As a photographer and imaging professional, producing the highest quality images is the upmost importance to me and my business. The PRO models can favorably recreate expressive prints while also reproducing a wide color gamut range that helps produce excellent image quality in the imagePROGRAF series.”

The new series includes a newly developed ink sensing system that periodically monitors ink ejection condition and optimizes ink landing position by detecting deterioration of ejecting condition and automatically performing alignment adjustment. The intelligent media handling function automatically detects the paper type, width and estimated remaining amount of paper, plus it completes the paper feeding process in a shorter time than previous models. The automation of this process will help ensure stable operations even in the absence of skilled or experienced personnel. The addition of LED interior lights allows users to preview prints and semi-translucent ink tank covers allows users to monitor ink tank status.

“The imagePROGRAF series has been recognized in the past many times for its outstanding performance and versatility, and this announcement continues to show our company’s on-going commitment to empowering our customers with the tools and capabilities needed to produce the high-quality content for projects with photography and fine arts,” said Shinichi "Sam" Yoshida, executive vice president and general manager of Canon U.S.A., Inc.

Additionally, Canon is launching two new fine art papers, Fine Art Etching 315 gsm, which enables fine photographic art prints that features deep black colors. Also launching is a Fine Art Baryta 310 gsm which includes a 100 percent barium sulfate (baryta) layer with elegant smooth finishes that are ideal for images with deep black and rich colors, dark room prints, and fine photographic reproductions.

Canon is proud to announce the series has earned an EPEAT Gold designation as a product that has met the most demanding set of criteria for sustainability leadership in electronics4. The new models contribute to companies commitment to sustainability by reducing the use of polystyrene packing materials, including 100 percent EPS free packaging in the case of the imagePROGRAF PRO-26003. Final assembly and production for the printers is carried out at a production center in which 100% of the electricity used comes from renewable energy.

Canon U.S.A., Inc. will have the imagePROGRAF PRO-4600 and PRO-2600 models on hand at Imaging USA, the Professional Photographers of America convention, from Jan. 28-30 in Louisville, Kentucky. The Canon booth will also have new camera lenses such as the RF24-105 F2.8 L IS USM and the RF10-20 F4 L IS STM on display, along with the EOS R5 and EOS R6 II, demonstrating Canon’s breadth of offerings for printing and imaging.

From Canon USA:

Canon Announces the Company’s First Set of RF-Mount Cinema Prime Lenses

MELVILLE, N.Y., September 12, 2023 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today the introduction of the company’s first RF-Mount Cinema Prime Lenses for the Cinema EOS System. The new lenses combine high optical performance for 4K and 8K shooting, cinema-style operability, and RF mount communications. The first set of seven RF-Mount Cinema Prime Lenses is only the beginning. Canon plans to swiftly expand the lineup of RF-mount-compatible video production equipment to meet the needs of professional video production of such content as movies, TV, and commercials.

The seven Canon CN-R lenses, with focal lengths and T stops of 14mm T3.1, 20mm T1.5, 24mm T1.5, 35mm T1.5, 50mm T1.3, 85mm T1.3, and 135mm T2.2, are compatible with the two existing RF-Mount Canon Cinema Cameras, the EOS C70 and EOS R5 C. These lenses will allow for RF mount protocol transmission, and just like the EF-Mount Cinema Prime Lenses, operators can control magnification, chromatic aberration correction, peripheral light correction, and a dual-pixel focus guide via camera body operations. In addition, the new lenses also feature lens distortion correction. These features support efficient video production during on-location recording and post-production workflow.

The new lenses are able to achieve high optical performance suitable for use with 4K and 8K cameras by optimally positioning large-diameter aspherical lens elements and lens elements with anomalous dispersion glass. Their compatibility with the full-frame large-format sensor, bright T stop values1, and 11-blade iris helps produce a shallow depth of field for subjects, natural round blurring, and soft image expressions. In addition, unified Cinema EOS color balance throughout the series helps provide consistent color, even when changing lenses.

Designed with an ideal level of ring torque, the new lenses allow for the precise and smooth adjustments often needed during cinema productions. Thanks to a unified design across the series, including the gear position of the operation ring, the diameter of the lens, and the rotation angle (operation angle), lenses can be effortlessly swapped in and out without the need to adjust matte boxes or external focus accessories for each lens. A new coarse surface near the mount provides a comfortable and ergonomic fit in the user’s hand, allowing the lens to be held securely without gripping the operation ring when attaching and detaching different lenses.

Pricing and Availability

The seven new Canon RF-Mount Cinema Prime Lenses estimated retail pricing and scheduled availability* are as follows:

Product /Pricing*/Availability*

CN-R14mm T3.1 L F $4,220.00 Late February 2024
CN-R20mm T1.5 L F $4,220.00 Late March 2024

With the addition of the CR-N100 to Canon’s lineup of remote cameras, customers now have greater choices of products that support a wide range of uses, from professional video production to video content use by markets such as corporate, local governments, house of worship, and educational institutions.

The CR-N100 showcases key features that leverage Canon’s history of professional camera technology development, including a 1/2.3” CMOS sensor and a DIGIC DV6 image processor platform that helps to produce 4K/30P high-image-quality video capture. In addition, the camera is equipped with a 20x optical zoom lens with a focal length of 29.3mm?601mmii, supporting image capture ranging from wide-angle to telephoto scenarios. The camera also includes four “scene modes”—Portrait, Sports, Low-light, and Spotlight—which users can choose to create their content based on the subject.

Users can build a complete, versatile production environment thanks to the CR-N100’s support for a variety of video interfaces and IP streaming protocols. The CR-N100 supports NDI|HXiii for high-quality – low latency video and control, SRTiv for secure high-quality video streaming over public networks, and RTP/RTSP/RTMP(s) for live streaming over popular social networks. The CR-N100 also supports Canon’s XC protocol for easy integration into new and existing Canon production environments. The CR-N100 also supports HDMI and the USB Video Class (UVC) transmission standard. UVC allows the CR-N100 to be used as a camera for web conference systems simply by connecting it to a PC via USB.

To help with the initial configuration of supported Canon PTZ, professional video, and cinema cameras, Canon is also releasing the Multi-Camera Management Application (MCMA). MCMA enables users to batch-configure initial camera settings as well as manage cameras, making it ideal for corporate, education, and events that require multi-camera environments, such as live streaming of university lectures and live event broadcasting.

With the Multi-Camera Management Application (MCMA), up to 200 individual camera units can be managed for use in large-scale camera systems. The MCMA streamlines the registration of usernames, passwords, and IP addresses to a camera and the registration of cameras to the RC-IP1000 by executing these procedures all at once, instead of individually. This allows for rapid initial configuration of large-scale systems with minimal workload. What’s more, the status of all connected cameras can be viewed in a convenient list that enables easier execution of operations such as updating firmware, restarting, and initialization.

Canon RC-IP1000 Remote Camera Controller

The Canon RC-IP1000 is a high-end controller that provides multiple functions and easy operation required for professional remote video production workflows, meeting the needs of various environments, including broadcast, house of worship, and live event streaming. The RC-IP1000 was designed with ease-of-use in mind and features direct functional buttons and dials ideally positioned and angled for simple operation, as well as an easily visible 7” touch-panel. The controller supports both IP and serial control, and can remotely perform Pan, Tilt, and Zoom (PTZ) movements, and the user can configure and change settings, including focus, exposure, and image settings. The RC-IP1000 is compatible with popular broadcast industry 12G-SDI input for 4K/60P, as well as visual input via IP and HDMI video output. The touch panel can display live video of cameras in single, 2x2, and 3x3 page layouts from cameras via IP, enabling simultaneous operation of multiple camera units.

With a lack of fanfare, the Canon OC-E4A Off-Camera Multi-Function Shoe Cord was introduced today. The OC-E4A provides functionality simlar to the Canon Off-Camera Shoe Cord OC-E3 to cameras featuring Canon's Multi-Function Hotshoe.

The OC-E4A facilitates easy repositioning a flash or other Multi-Function Shoe accessory, such as the Canon DM-E1D Stereo Microphone, to within the 2.6' (.8m) cord length, without wireless communications required. Mounting a flash on a bracket is a common use for this accessory.

An issue to be aware of. From Canon USA and Amazon:

Canon and Amazon file a joint trademark infringement lawsuit in the U.S.

TOKYO, May 11, 2023—Canon Inc. and Canon U.S.A., Inc. together with Amazon.com, Inc., and Amazon.com Services LLC jointly filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington against 29 selling accounts which sold camera batteries and chargers in the Amazon store in the U.S., alleging infringement of Canon's trademark rights.

Canon aggressively pursues counterfeiters in the United States and around the world to protect its customers from fake and potentially unsafe products, which unlawfully use the Canon name, as well as to protect the value, trusted reputation, and loyalty that the Canon brand has acquired over decades in producing high-quality, safe, and reliable products. Sales of counterfeit goods on e-commerce websites are increasing in proportion to the growth of the e-commerce market, and Canon and Amazon are collaborating in fighting against counterfeiters and protecting both of our customers. This joint lawsuit was filed as a part of our collaboration.
