From Canon U.S.A: Canon U.S.A. Launches a Line of 4K UHD PTZ Cameras Ready For Integration Into a Variety of Environments

The Company Also Introduced the RC-IP100 Remote Camera Controller That Allows for the Control of Multiple Canon PTZ Cameras at Once

MELVILLE, NY, March 17, 2021– Designed for use in a wide-range of applications in broadcast, education, house of worship, sports, and corporate environments, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is excited to introduce the company’s first line of 4K UHD PTZ cameras – the CR-N500 and CR-N300 for indoor live-streaming and the outdoor CR-X500.

This new line of cameras capitalizes on Canon’s digital imaging and operational expertise from both professional camcorders and network cameras. This enables the cameras to not only deliver brilliant 4K imagery thanks to Canon’s CMOS sensors, DIGIC DV 6 Image Processor, and optical zoom lenses, but also smooth pan, tilt and zoom functionality that allows for on-air camera movement. The new indoor PTZ cameras support various video interfaces, including HDMI, IP, and 3G-SDI, and are also compatible with popular live production protocols like NDI|HX®, RTMP and more. The new outdoor PTZ camera supports 12G-SDI, and includes a durable, IP55 rated weather-resistant housing. In addition to the cameras, Canon has also introduced a new remote camera controller, the RC-IP100, which supports IP and serial connections and can operate camera functions such as pan, tilt, zoom, focus, and iris.

“In 2020, Canon introduced the System Integrator Program with the goal of developing strategic relationships with integrators, providing the organizations world-class support and cutting-edge digital imaging equipment,” said Tatsuro “Tony” Kano, executive vice president and general manager of Canon U.S.A.’s Imaging Technologies & Communications Group. “These new PTZ cameras and remote camera controller were designed with the system integrator market squarely in mind. We are eager to see how these cameras are incorporated into the creative solutions that they develop for end users.”

The Vivid CR-N500 4K UHD PTZ Camera

When combined, the 1.0-inch CMOS sensor, 3.2µm pixel pitch, and DIGIC DV 6 image processor featured in the CR-N500 4K UHD PTZ camera provide users with the capability to capture images with high sensitivity, low noise, and a minimum subject illumination of approximately 1.5 lux1.

Utilizing a 15x optical zoom 4K UHD lens, users will also experience cinematic images with shallow depth-of-field and beautifully blurred backgrounds with brilliant image quality. The 15x optical zoom covers a 35mm equivalent focal range of 25.5-382.5mm, and the camera is capable of a variable pan and tilt speed from 0.1° - 100° per second to support smooth on-air movement or fast preset transitions. An independent, built-in three-density ND filter and nine-bladed iris create natural bokeh effects, with diffused, diffracted light. The CR-N500 features Dual Pixel CMOS AF with dual pixel focus guide, as well as face detection and tracking. The CR-N500 also supports Canon Log 3 for color grading and wide dynamic range gamma of 800%, along with image quality mode and adjustment functions to enhance an operator’s image customization capabilities from capture to post-production.

The Versatile CR-N300 4K UHD PTZ Camera

The CR-N300 4K UHD PTZ camera uses a 1/2.3-inch CMOS sensor, DIGIC DV 6 image processor, and a 20x optical zoom lens with a 35mm equivalent focal range of 29.3-601mm. The camera features Canon’s Hybrid AF system that combines high-precision contrast AF and high-speed phase-difference AF, allowing operators to gain focus and lock-in subjects even in dim or dark situations. The variable pan speed of the camera clocks in at 0.2° - 300° per second and the variable tilt speed is 0.2° - 170° per second. The CR-N300 can also be used as a webcam via a USB connection.

The CR-N300 is equipped with four unique scene modes: portrait, sports, low-light, and spotlight, which allows users to select the mode most suitable for the desired subject.

  • Portrait Mode achieves sharp focus while blurring the background.
  • Sports Mode enhances the ability to capture moving objects.
  • Low-Light Mode brightens images when in dim or dark shooting situations.
  • Spotlight Mode allows users to capture beautiful images in brightly lit situations.
  • The CR-N300 and the CR-N500 both offer peace of mind, being backed by Canon’s 3-year limited warranty. (See website for more information)

The All-Weather CR-X500 4K UHD PTZ Camera

The Canon CR-X500 4K UHD PTZ is rated IP55 for water and dust resistance, and is designed for outdoor uses including sports, news/weather coverage, and television production. The camera features a 1.0-inch CMOS sensor that captures 4K UHD images in 60p/4:2:2/10-bit. The sensor’s 3.2µm pixel pitch combined with dual DIGIC DV 6 image processors produces improved signal-to-noise ratio from previous HD models and a minimum subject illuminance of 3 lux. The camera features a 15x 4K UHD lens with an optical 35mm equivalent zoom range of 25.5-382mm. When the camera is in FHD mode, operators can use the camera’s 4K multi-pixel sensors for up to a 30x advanced zoom. Dual Pixel CMOS AF, Canon’s renowned and popular autofocus system, allows for superb tracking performance and successfully captures 4K scenes where outstanding accuracy is required. Image Stabilization mode helps to reduce camera shake and produces stable and clear images even in windy conditions, and a built-in wiper helps to clear away rain from the camera. The camera also supports Canon Log 3 for color grading and a wide dynamic range gamma of 800%, as well as image quality mode and adjustment functions to enhance an operator’s image customization capabilities.

Features of the Canon RC-IP100 Camera Remote Controller

The Canon RC-IP100 camera remote controller supports IP and serial connections and is compatible with all three of the new PTZ cameras, allowing operators to control multiple cameras simultaneously. By virtue of the control and seesaw zoom levers and 7-inch touch panel, users can control each camera’s functions such as pan, tilt, zoom, focus, and iris. When connected via IP, it is possible to control up to 99 CR-N500/CR-N300 cameras, and when connected via serial, an outdoor CR-X500 can be controlled, allowing for a total of 100 cameras.

Included with the Indoor PTZ Cameras is the Remote Camera Control Application software which allows PC users to register up to 20 cameras, viewing up to nine different cameras live at once. Full camera control, including setting trace functions and presets, is easily accessible with the click of a mouse.

Along with the new PTZ cameras and controller, Canon is also introducing a newly-developed XC Protocol2 that offers control and communication with select Canon video production devices for high quality video streaming over IP. Later this year, Canon will look to release new firmware to introduce the new XC protocol to select Cinema EOS System cameras.

From Canon U.S.A.:

Need a Digital Photo Assistant? Canon U.S.A. has you Covered with the Company’s First-Ever Photo Culling App

Canon Also Publicly Debuts “PHIL,” the Company’s Computer-Vision Artificial Intelligence Engine

MELVILLE, NY, February 11, 2021– According to a recent report from Keypoint Intelligence, 1.4 trillion photos were taken worldwide in 2020 and 7.4 trillion images were stored1. With these staggering numbers, it could be overwhelming for the average consumer to decide what photos are best to keep and store. Delivering expert photo advice in the form of an app, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announces its Photo Culling app. Compatible with iOS devices2, this brand-new app helps determine a user’s best photos based on scores against four models: sharpness, noise, emotions and closed eyes, using Canon’s Computer Vision Artificial Intelligence Engine known as “PHIL” (abbreviated for Photography Intelligence Learning)3. Additionally, the app will suggest deleting duplicative photos, making it easy for the consumer to free up space on their smartphone.

"In today's ever-changing and overwhelming world, where thousands of photos are captured and stored in a person’s smartphone, consumers need an expert, reliable and intuitive photo tool to help them decide the best photos based on years of trusted knowledge and technology,” said Tatsuro "Tony" Kano, executive vice president and general manager of the Imaging Technologies & Communications Group of Canon U.S.A., Inc. “Canon U.S.A.’s new Photo Culling App is the answer and we are proud to see how the company’s Computer Vision technology within this app can assist consumers with finding and keeping their best photos of their fondest moments."

The Photo Culling app features two culling options:

Whole Culling: Determines the best photos based on the absolute best scores against the four models: sharpness, noise, emotions and closed eyes. If the score is over the threshold the user sets, the photo is considered to be the best. The remaining images would be suggested as deletions.

Similar Culling: Determines the best photos based on score comparison among a similar group of photos. The highest-scoring photos within the group are considered the best photos. A second photo may also be selected as the second-best photo within the group. The remaining images would be suggested as deletions. The app is also able to find similar photos and group them together. For example, If a user selects 10 photos of a dog and 10 photos of a sunset, it will break the photos into two groups and find the best photo of each; one of the dog and one of the sunset.

In addition to its culling options, the Photo Culling app also features:

Photo Counts and Storage: Shows the number of photos a user has as well as the amount of phone storage on the Home Screen.

Event Album: Categorizing and placing photos in albums on the Home Screen. These are dynamic albums based on events/date throughout the year and the app will pull events that have a large number of photos and suggest the user review these photos to delete and save space.

Features in the Setting Screens: Displaying the number of photos deleted, the current subscription plan (see details below), option for notifications, parameter setting for each score against sharpness, noise, emotion and closed eyes. Users also can adjust these settings, such as changing how much of an impact noise has on a photo versus closed eyes4.

Dark and Light Mode Settings Screen Option: Displays screens either as a dark or light mode option

Price & Availability*

Available for download via the App Store, the Photo Culling app will be available under two subscription options: $2.99 per month or $14.99 for the year, each with a three-day trial5. For more information, please visit, usa.canon.com/photo-culling-app.

I did not see a press release for this new transmitter, but here is more information from Canon USA:

The Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT (Ver.2) provides some much anticipated upgrades from professionals to make it an even more appealing resource for flash photography when used with the Speedlite EL-1. This updated version allows for wireless rear curtain synchronization to capture ambient light trails and convey a sense of speed for moving subjects. The expansive minimum output range (down to 1/8192 power) gives you increased opportunity for creativity over the flash output from brig... read more

Updated to include Wireless Rear Curtain Synchronization, A Minimum Output Range of 1/8192, and FE Memory.

When used in combination with the Speedlite EL-1, the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT (Ver.2) provides additional benefits* of wireless rear curtain synchronization so the flash fires as the shutter closes to capture beautiful light trails to signify movement of the subject, minimum flash power as low as 1/8192 for even more opportunity to work in low available light, and FE memory so you can store an E-TTL flash exposure and continue to use that same exposure when subjects and scenes remain unchanged.

  • Manual flash power below 1/128th not possible with 600EX-RT series, and 430EX-RT used as receiver units.
  • 2nd curtain sync can be used with Speedlite EL-1, 600EX-RT series and 430EX-RT receiver units, but with EOS R5, R6, or EOS-1D X Mark III cameras only.

Up to 5 groups, or 15 Individual Flashes can be Controlled via 1 Transmitter

The Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT (Ver.2) facilitates radio controlled, two-way wireless transmission up to 98.4 feet, for a reliable and robust connection among sender and receiver units. Communicating on 2.4 GHz frequencies, the ST-E3-RT (Ver.2) does not have the same directional limitations of traditional wireless optical transmitters. Where other wireless signals can be interrupted by physical obstacles, radio controlled systems excel. Fifteen transmission channels are available, selectable manually or automatically (for optimum radio transmission, depending on environment), and radio transmission IDs can be set to prevent interference from other photographers on the same channel. With the extended, more reliable range afforded by radio transmission, ambitious photography is made easier.

Supports E-TTL II Flash, Manual Flash, Stroboscopic and Auto External Flash Metering

With the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT (Ver.2), up to fifteen Canon RT-compatible Speedlites in five groups can be controlled from the camera, via a single transmitter. Each group can be set to a different flash mode, enabling multiple configurations for creative photography. For example, with the ST-E3-RT (Ver.2) some flashes can be directed to operate according to the camera’s E-TTL flash reading, others can be set manually; groups can be set to overexposure or underexpose, and much, much more. With up to fifteen flashes under the control of one transmitter, wirelessly, complex lighting setups normally reserved for the studio are a breeze.

Dot Matrix LCD Panel Displays all Pertinent Information Simultaneously and Backlit Control Panel means Easy Operation

The Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT (Ver.2) features a dot matrix LCD panel (172 x 104 dots). This LCD displays Flash status, flash settings and wireless configuration for any combination of Speedlite EL-1, 600EX-RT series, and 430EX-RT, used off-camera as Receiver units. With the transmitter’s LCD screen combined with backlit operation buttons and even an internal sound emitter, the ST-E3-RT (Ver.2) is as easy to operate in the dark as in daylight.

8 Types of Custom Functions, 3 Types of Personal Functions

To accommodate the demands of a number of different shooting situations, the Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT (Ver.2) can be configured with eight different Custom Functions and any of three Personal Functions. Custom Functions include: auto power off, modeling flash controls, sound, illumination and more. Personal Functions include display contrast and LCD panel illumination color for both sender and receiver flashes.

High-Performance Hot Shoe Contacts for Reliable Information Transmission and Operation

The Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT (Ver.2) is built to the standards one would expect from professional Canon camera systems. The hot shoe contact ensures reliable communication between camera and transmitter. Dust and water resistance is excellent as well: all moving parts and areas surrounding the transmitter’s display and buttons are sealed for uninterrupted performance in harsh conditions. A dust and water resistant design for the mounting foot creates a dust and water resistant seal between camera and flash. Compact and lightweight, the ST-E3-RT (Ver.2) is approx. 2.7 (W) x 2.4 (H) x 3.0 (D) in.

DISCLAIMERS

* When used with the Speedlite EL-1 in combination with an EOS R5, EOS R6, EOS-1D X Mark III or EOS M50 Mark II camera. Some features will work with older Speedlite models such as 600EX II-RT, 600EX-RT and 430EX III-RT, and previous EOS cameras, but not all. As of February 3, 2021.

Somewhat off-topic, but interesting nonetheless — from Canon USA:

NEW INDUSTRIAL MACHINE VISION CAMERAS FROM CANON UTILIZE NEXT-GEN 19 MICRON SENSOR TECHNOLOGY FOR COLOR LOW-LIGHT IMAGE CAPTURE

Industrial and Modular Camera Design Offers Choice of Lens Mounts and Video Output

MELVILLE N.Y., November 4, 2020 — Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today introduced the Company’s next generation of multi-purpose cameras, the ML-100, and the ML-105 , which deliver amazingly high sensitivity to capture Full HD Color video with a minimum subject illumination of less than 0.0005 lux (at maximum 75 dB gain setting, equivalent to an ISO sensitivity of over 4,500,000). With the ability to capture color low-light images, these multi-purpose cameras can be utilized in industrial system design, where seeing color images is critical during day and night.

Canon’s new series of multi-purpose industrial machine vision cameras employ a next-generation 19um, 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor. The modular design of the cameras allows implementation and integration into industrial machine vision environments.

The ML series is available in two models with two different lens mounts and two video output configurations to choose from, for a total of four camera options. The ML-100 camera features a CoaXpress terminal, which allows for the transmission of video, camera-control data and power on a single coaxial cable, ideal for use in industrial systems. The CoaXpress terminal produces 12-bit RAW data output at up to 73 fps and allows for more flexibility during processing. The ML-100 features approximately 2.74 million pixels of maximum video output and supports Region of Interest, which can improve frame rate output up to 164 fps at 720p resolution. The ML-105 camera features a 3G/HD-SDI video terminal and can be suited for standard video environments where Canon image processing, including YCC 4:2:2 10-bit output, is required. The ML-105 features the Canon DIGIC DV4 Image Processor, capable of delivering Full HD resolution at 60fps. Both cameras can be ordered with either an EF or M58 mount for total system design flexibility.

The EF mount gives customers the ability to choose from Canon’s still and cinema lens lineup, while the M58 offers lens customization and design choice to the user.

The M58 mount version of the Canon ML-100 multi-purpose camera is scheduled to be available at the end of December 2020. The other three models are scheduled to be available in April 2021

The compact and lightweight nature of the lens makes it Canon’s shortest and lightest 70-200mm F4 zoom lens to date. This RF lens is approximately 32 percent shorter and 11 percent lighter than its EF counterpart with a large portion of the lens element arrangement closer to the camera body. This arrangement is designed to provide photographers with a more balanced feel and experience even at the zoom range’s telephoto end. Additionally, the shorter and lighter design allows the lens to more easily be stowed away in a camera bag when not in use.

The RF70-200mm F4 L IS USM features two independent Nano USM motors, providing an even greater level of high-speed autofocus for still image shooting as well as quiet and smooth autofocus for video shooting. The lens also incorporates a floating focus control that drives the two lens groups individually while using the two aforementioned Nano USM motors. The floating focus lens element shortens the focusing distance and helps reduce breathing, providing users with fast, consistent and reliable performance.

Additional Features of The Canon RF70-200mm F4 L IS USM Lens Include:

  • 16 lens elements in 11 groups, including four UD lenses, that help to reduce chromatic aberration

Canon RF 50mm F1.8 STM Lens

Canon RF50mm F1.8 STM Lens

Creatives love using a 50mm lens because that focal length is similar to the natural viewpoint of the human field of vision. This perspective allows for the lens to be used in a wide variety of shooting situations, including portraits, landscapes and food photography. What’s more, Canon 50mm f/1.8 lenses have long been a popular tool for both photographers and creators due to their budget-friendly price point, extremely compact and lightweight form factor, and versatility.

The tradition continues with the RF50mm F1.8 STM that, in many ways, is improved over its EF counterpart. The first visually noticeable improvement is the customizable control ring that has become synonymous with RF lenses. The control ring allows photographers to adjust exposure compensation, shutter speed, aperture, or ISO and with a flip of the side switch can adjust focus. The inclusion of a PMo aspherical lens helps to reduce chromatic aberration and provides high-image quality even at the periphery of the image. Additionally, the combination of the lens shape and Super Spectra Coating (SSC) helps to minimize ghosting and flaring.

Additional Features of The Canon RF50mm F1.8 STM Lens Include:

  • Six lens elements in five groups
  • 12-pin communication system
  • Minimum focusing distance of 0.98ft and a maximum magnification of 0.25x

Update: Canon USA has published a press release that does not require translation:

Canon U.S.A. Announces Three New Industrial Imaging Sensors

MELVILLE, NY, October 19, 2020 – As imaging sensors continue to be an essential component of industrial processes, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is excited to announce three new CMOS (complementary metal-oxide semiconductors) sensors: the ultra-high-resolution LI8020 series, the ultra-high sensitivity LI3030 series, and the LI7050SAC. These sensors help expand the company’s lineup of industrial vision products while offering integrators and end-users additional capabilities when developing solutions for various applications.

LI8020SAC/LI8020SAM

The LI8020SAC (color)/LI8020SAM (monochrome) ultra-high resolution CMOS sensor features a pixel pitch of 1.5 µm (micrometer) and a resolution of approximately 250 million pixels, which provides detailed images in a wide range of applications and situations. The sensor will help meet the needs of manufacturers to inspect flat panel displays, which frequently exhibit 4K and sometimes even 8K content. The sensor can also be a tool for video production, digital archiving, wide-area monitoring, and the medical industry by providing ultra-high resolution and ultra-high-speed signal readouts. Due to the ultra-high pixel count of the sensor, images can be captured that maintain incredible image quality, even if an area of the moving or still image has been cropped and enlarged using an electronic zoom.

The new sensor can capture video at an ultra-high-resolution that is approximately 125 times higher than Full HD (1920 × 1080 pixels) and about 30 times higher than 4K (3840 × 2160 pixels). Still images can be captured at a speed of approximately five frames per second even when reading all the pixels. A fast signal readout of 1.25 billion pixels per second helps to avoid the potential of any signal delay or deviation. The rapid signal readout is achieved by advancing circuit miniaturization and signal processing technology. When the Read Return on Investment (Region of Interest) feature is utilized, the frame rate of the sensor can be increased by selecting an area and reducing the amount of information to be read. If a user doesn’t need the input of every pixel, the ROI readout function allows you to read every pixel at five fps, 8K at 24 fps, 4K at 30 fps, and Full HD at 60 fps. The sensor also features a "thinning-out read function" that enables high-speed readout by reducing the number of vertical pixels to be read out of the full shooting area, allowing selection of an output data format that suits users’ needs.

LI3030SAI/LI3030SAM

The LI3030SAI (RGB-IR)/LI3030SAM (monochrome) sensor is a 35mm full-size ultra-high sensitivity CMOS sensor with a large pixel size of 19 µm that allows for image capturing in low-light environments where it can difficult for the naked eye to identify the subject. The sensor can read 2160 × 1280 pixels, which is wider than Full HD (1920 × 1080 pixels), enabling it to be a suitable solution for astronomical observation applications and the monitoring and industrial applications that require high-resolution images with a specific aspect ratio.

Compared to similar Canon models, the sensitivity of the LI3030SAI and LI3030SAM sensor is approximately 2.3 and 3 times higher in the near-infrared range, respectively. The sensitivity capabilities of the LI3030SAI allow users to see the pupil of a human-eye through sunglasses. The LI3030SAM sensitivity capabilities enable users to capture monochrome moving images and can reduce the appearance of dust, enhancing astronomical observation. By assigning one pixel of the color filter as a pixel for the near-infrared region, it is possible to simultaneously acquire color and near-infrared motion images with a single sensor even under low-light conditions. In addition, since the differences in the reflectance and absorbance of light in the near-infrared region can be detected from weak signals and the state of the inside of a substance can be observed, the sensor can be used in a wide range of industrial and medical fields. Use-case examples include long-distance monitoring at night, observation of crop growth in a wide area, inspection of foreign matter contamination in food factories, and visualization of biological tissues.

LI7050SAC

The LI7050SAC is a high resolution CMOS sensor that is ideal for security camera use because of its high sensitivity and price point. Featuring a pixel pitch of 4.1 µm and a resolution of approximately 2.12 million pixels, the sensor provides a High Dynamic Range (HDR) of equivalent to up to 20 stops with frame rates of 30fps and 60fps. What’s more, the sensor features a 54,000 green sensitivity level and can read 1936 × 1096 pixels, which is slightly higher than HD resolution.

Released "LI8020SAC / LI8020SAM", an ultra-high resolution CMOS sensor with approximately 250 million pixels

October 19, 2020

Canon Inc.
Canon Marketing Japan Inc.

As a new product of APS-H size (about 29.4 x 18.9 mm) CMOS sensor, Canon will release "LI8020SAC (color) / LI8020SAM (monochrome)" capable of imaging about 250 million pixels (19,568 x 12,588 pixels) in 2020. It will be released in late October of the year.

LI8020SAC / LI8020SAM

Main features

The new product is an ultra-high resolution CMOS sensor with approximately 250 million pixels, which enables you to capture detailed information in an image while shooting a wide range. In addition, by setting the pitch of one pixel to 1.5 µm (micrometer), we have achieved approximately 250 million pixels in APS-H size, making it possible to use it for various purposes. It can be used for various purposes such as FPD (flat panel display) inspection, which has become higher definition due to the development of 4K / 8K video technology, industrial inspection, video production, digital archive, wide area surveillance, microscope, etc. Meet the needs of users.

Get detailed information even in a wide range of shooting with ultra-high resolution of about 250 million pixels

The new product is capable of imaging at ultra-high resolution of about 250 million pixels, which is about 125 times that of full HD (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) and about 30 times that of 4K (3,840 x 2,160 pixels), and can be taken in any shooting range. Sufficient resolution can be obtained by trimming the area and enlarging it with an electronic zoom.

Achieves ultra-high-speed signal reading of approximately 1.25 billion pixels / second

With CMOS sensors, the amount of signal increases as the number of pixels increases, causing signal delays and slight timing deviations. The new product has an ultra-multi-pixel structure of approximately 250 million pixels, but by refining the circuit and advancing signal processing technology, it has achieved an ultra-high-speed signal readout of approximately 1.25 billion pixels per second. This enables ultra-high resolution imaging at a speed of approximately 5 frames / sec even when all pixels are read out.

Supports data output according to user needs with "ROI read function" etc.

The new product is equipped with a "ROI (Region of Interest) read function" that selectively reads only an arbitrary area. If you want to read only a specific area at high speed, you can use the "ROI read function" at 24 fps for 8K (7,680 x 4,320 pixels), 30 fps for 4K (3,840 x 2,160), and 60 fps for full HD (1,920 x 1,080). Video recording is possible. It also has a "thinning out reading function * " that thins out the entire image area in the vertical direction to read out, so you can select the data output method that suits your needs.

* 4 patterns of thinning are possible. 1/3 is about 15fps, 1/5 is about 25fps, 1/7 is about 35fps, and 1/9 is about 45fps.

CMOS sensor market trends

Digital technologies such as image processing are also undergoing rapid evolution as high-definition technology is advancing for FPD inspection equipment. High resolution is also required for CMOS sensors, which are the eyes of inspection equipment, and manufacturing sites are demanding inspection equipment equipped with ultra-high resolution sensors. In addition, ultra-high resolution sensors are expected to be used in applications such as wide area monitoring. (Research by Canon)

Note the versatility-increasing EF-to-RF adapter announced for this camera.

From Canon:

Ready For Action: The Canon EOS C70 4K Digital Cinema Camera Packs Cinema EOS Imaging Features Into Still Camera Ergonomics

The First Cinema EOS Camera with an RF Mount, this New Compact and Lightweight Model Features a Super 35mm Dual Gain Output (DGO) Sensor, DIGIC DV7 Image Processor, and 16+ Stops of Total Dynamic Range

MELVILLE, NY, September 24, 2020 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is excited to announce the company's first-ever RF mount Cinema EOS camera, the EOS C70 4K Digital Cinema Camera. When the Canon RF mount was first introduced, imaging professionals began to dream about the possibilities that this revolutionary mount system might provide them. One request that Canon consistently heard was to put an RF mount on a Cinema EOS camera so that future lens performance could capitalize on the short flange depth. Just two short years later, those wishes have come true with the new C70 camera.

The unique design of the EOS C70 camera puts a significant emphasis on operational convenience for the end-user. The small form-factor, weighing only 2.6lbs., allows the camera to be easily handheld and dramatically enhances a videographer's mobility, providing a seamless bridge between the EOS and Cinema EOS families for cinematic applications. Cleverly designed, the camera features a slim, motorized ND filter unit – having a mere 6mm depth – that is built into the short flange back of the RF mount. The motorized 10-stop ND filter provides users with the flexibility to control exposure while keeping the desired depth-of-field and capturing images that feature the desired level of bokeh. Thirteen customizable buttons allow users to select from more than 80 functions to be assigned based on individual preferences.

"The Canon EOS C70 camera is truly a special tool that will undoubtedly satisfy and delight a variety of users on the search for a high-powered piece of video equipment," said Tatsuro "Tony" Kano, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Canon U.S.A.'s Imaging Technologies & Communications Group. "In today's fast-moving, ever-changing world of filmmaking and content creation, versatility is key, and the EOS C70 will provide a familiar form and feature set to our entire spectrum of imaging customers. We are eager to see how creatives use this tool and the projects that come from it."

The camera features Canon's innovative and next-generation Super 35mm DGO Sensor that further extends the high dynamic range and lowers noise levels by reading out each photodiode with two different gains. One gain prioritizes saturation – protecting detail in highlight areas – while the other suppresses noise in the shadows. The result is an image with up to 16-plus stops of total dynamic range, clean, rich shadows, and vibrant highlights in up to 4K/ 60p or 2K/120p in Super16mm Crop mode. The EOS C70 camera also features Canon's recently developed DIGIC DV7 image processor that collects the extensive information captured from the DGO sensor and processes it into exceptional HDR imagery while offering choices between Canon Log 2 and 3, in addition to PQ and HLG gamma functionality. The C70 camera can also record 4K DCI or UHD up to 120fps and 2K DCI or HD up to 180 fps – with an important flexibility in the choice of codecs.

The camera supports XF-AVC format (in variable bit-rate) – both Intra and Long GOP with MXF file format. The intra-frame format compresses the data after analyzing each frame separately, while Long GOP format compresses data at a higher rate, creating an even smaller file size. A secondary choice is Long GOP 10-bit 4:2:2/4:2:0 MP4/HEVC (a next-generation HDR video recording compression standard) with an MP4 file format – a first in the Cinema EOS line.

The camera's independent air intake system is separated from the electrical systems to protect the sensor from water, sand, and dust. In addition, the camera also features two air outlet vents that allow uninterrupted recording for extended periods of time.

Canon EOS C70 Back

Additional features of the Canon EOS C70 4K Digital Cinema Camera include:

  • New Direct Touch Menu System
  • Coordinated Electronic Image Stabilization
  • Two built-in Mini XLR inputs
  • Time-code input/output terminal
  • Custom picture processing via import of 3D LUTs and recording to Look Files
  • Dual-SD card slots
  • Built-in stereo mic
  • Support for optional Canon RC-V100 remote control

Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x

The Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x is a new optical adapter that allows users to tap into Canon's extensive collection of superb full-frame EF lenses when operating the EOS C70 camera. The adapter implements two critically important functions – preserving the similar FF wide angle image onto the 4K Super 35mm image sensor while simultaneously elevating the lens camera sensitivity by one stop. The mount adapter preserves full electronic communication between the lens and camera, enabling optical lens corrections and transfer of lens metadata between the EOS C70 camera and select Canon EF lenses*.

Price & Availability

The Canon EOS C70 4K Digital Cinema Camera is scheduled to be available in November 2020 for an estimated retail price of $5499.00. The Canon Mount Adapter EF-EOS R 0.71x is scheduled to be available in December 2020 for an estimated retail price of $599.99**.

From the didn't see that one coming department, Canon Australia shares:

Canon Australia closes online Canon Store to support local retail partners

1st September 2020

To our valued Canon consumers,

This notice is to inform you that Canon Australia will be ceasing the operation of its direct to consumer marketplace - Canon Store - for the foreseeable future, effective from 30 September 2020.

The Canon Store was launched in 2011 as an ecommerce platform designed to expand online shopping options for local consumers. Fast forward to 2020, the unprecedented challenges currently facing the Australian market has seen Canon Australia re-examine the best way to help consumers access our products, services and support. As a result, we are proudly streamlining our efforts in supporting local retailers to drive competition in the local market and bring you the best value product offers, promotions, services and experiences possible.

Key dates to note:

  • Last orders: The Canon Store will stop taking product orders on 30 September 2020.
  • Gift cards and vouchers: Active Canon Store gift cards and vouchers can be applied to purchases and used in conjunction with eligible offers on the Canon Store until 30 September 2020. Please contact Canon Australia via store@canon.com.au to discuss how you can redeem any non-expired gift cards or vouchers beyond this date.
  • Promotional codes: Canon Store promotional code and discount offers are valid until 30 September 2020. Please contact Canon Australia via store@canon.com.au if you have questions about a current promo-code that may be affected. Canon Store codes will not be transferable to other retailers or offers.
  • Products on backorder: Canon Store will no longer accept payment for products on backorder and will no longer add consumers to waitlists for out of stock product. Product purchases on backorder will continue to be filled for stock scheduled to arrive before 30 September 2020. Canon will directly contact consumers with orders scheduled to arrive after this date to arrange a refund or support via a local retailer.

Purchases made on the Canon Store prior to 30 September 2020 will still receive free shipping and will be covered by the Canon 14 Day Peace of Mind return policy. Canon Australia’s unique 5-year local warranty for Mirrorless, DSLR, Digital Video Camera & Lens products is unaffected by the Canon Store closure and will continue to be supported for purchases made at authorised Canon sellers.

If you have any questions, please contact us via store@canon.com.au. Or visit our Frequently Asked Questions page here.

Moving forward, Canon will continue to work with local retailers to bring hands-on product experiences and promotions to consumers. To stay up to date with the latest product offers, experiences and news, we encourage you to follow Canon Australia on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube.

From Canon:

Details Regarding Canon EOS R5/EOS R6 Overheating During Video Recording

The EOS R5, one of the latest additions to Canon’s full-frame mirrorless camera line, offers class-leading autofocus with high-resolution and high frame rate video recording options using the maximum width of the full-frame sensor at high bit rates. Inevitably, this combination of features has potential to generate some significant heat, which will limit recording time.

Canon has taken several steps to manage the potential for overheating, including:

  • Magnesium alloy was used in the body to dissipate heat away from internal components
  • An “overheat control” function to reduce heat generation when the camera is in standby

In regard to the installation of a fan: The decision not to install a fan within the body was made in order to maintain the EOS R5’s compact size, lightweight construction and weather resistance.

Before recording starts, the EOS R5 and EOS R6 display an estimate of the recordable time based on the current camera temperature and the set recording mode.

Canon has published and included below the approximate recording and estimated recovery times for 23°C / 73°F environments and ensure that the camera will warn users when it is getting too hot. Additionally, tips to reduce overheating as well as recovering time are listed below.

Timing:

Canon EOS R5 and R6 Approximate Video Record Times

How can you reduce heat buildup in the EOS R5?

  • Set Overheat Control function to "ON" (default). When the overheat control function is enabled, the movie size and frame rate are automatically changed while the camera is in standby mode to suppress the rise of the internal temperature
  • Between recordings, it is recommended to turn off the camera
  • Position the camera out of direct sunlight
  • Use an external fan to dissipate heat

How long will it take for the camera to recover?

Estimated camera recovery times are indicated below. The time until full record time is available will vary with ambient temperature, continued camera operation and the selected shooting resolution.

Canon EOS R5 and R6 Approximate Heat Wait Times

What about the EOS R6?

Like the EOS R5, the EOS R6 offers powerful movie recording and stills capabilities within a compact body design. At the highest frame rates and resolutions heat is inevitably generated. We believe the EOS R6 offers best in class performance, especially for enthusiast photographers and video content creators.

The EOS R6 can record up to the 29 minutes 59 second recording limit in the 5.1K oversampled 4K 60p mode at (23°C / 73°F) before encountering any heat related issues within the camera and up to 40 minutes of 4K at 30p.
