Canon Targets High-End Broadcasters With New PTZ Camera

Broadcast Quality Video Capture and Advanced Connectivity Options Help Enable Broadcasters to Achieve Efficient Production

MELVILLE, NY, September 7, 2022 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today the launch of the CR-N700i – a 4K 60P 4:2:2 10-bit PTZ camera with a 1.0-inch Type CMOS Sensor and 12G-SDI connectivity, designed for professional broadcast, studios, and live event productions. Building on Canon’s broadcast heritage, the CR-N700 incorporates the intelligent AF from Canon’s popular professional video cameras, such as the EOS C70 and XF605, for precision focus across the entire pan, tilt and zoom range. With a host of powerful features, this launch expands Canon’s PTZ line-up, offering a PTZ camera for various types of productions and technical requirements. Additionally, Canon is announcing the availability of a firmware update for the Canon CR-N500 and CR-N300 PTZ cameras.

Achieve Broadcast Quality, Easily

To meet the current demands of broadcasters, the CR-N700 features a 1.0-inch Type CMOS sensor and DIGIC DV7 processor to deliver superb 4K UHD 60P 4:2:2 10-bit imagery for truly immersive content. Capable of high-quality transmission, Canon’s newest PTZ camera allows content creators to stream 4K 60P over IP with PoE++ support that allows for power, streaming, and camera control over a single cable – perfect for remote and live broadcast productions. The impeccable image quality is also the result of the high-performance lens, which has a 15x optical zoom and a 30x advanced zoom when shooting in Full HD. When coupled with Canon’s renowned Image Stabilizer, broadcasters can capture smooth, steady footage even from a distance. This can be ideal for shooting reality TV shows or even sports when camera operators want to discreetly zoom in on the action. The CR-N700 also features a Night Mode, allowing operators to capture footage in near darkness thanks to a removable built-in IR cut filter. Along with the HDR formats in PQ or HLG, broadcasters can capture virtually uncompromised footage in various lighting environments.

Breaking new ground for Canon’s line-up of PTZ cameras, the CR-N700 is equipped with fast, intelligent and extremely accurate focusing thanks to Canon’s proprietary Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology with advanced EOS iTR AF X. This deep learning autofocus locks onto a subject’s head, to track them as they move and even when they turn their face away. Eye Detection AF locks onto the subject’s pupil for even greater precision, while the Face Priority AF allows operators to prioritize a specific individual. This can be ideal for scenarios where it is imperative to stay locked onto the anchor throughout.

Superb Connectivity, Simple Workflows

As with Canon’s entire range of PTZ cameras, the CR-N700 supports multiple protocols to integrate with existing workflows seamlessly. Designed to fit into the diverse production ecosystems of broadcasters, the CR-N700 features SRT and NDI|HXii protocols for high-quality 4K video streams, while FreeD enables integration with virtual productions. Broadcasters can easily create multi-camera setups that meet their needs with these protocols, and with Canon’s XC protocol, it is possible to integrate the CR-N700 alongside other Canon Cinema EOS cameras such as the EOS C500 Mark II, EOS C300 Mark III, or professional camcorders including the XF605iii for a truly versatile setup. It’s even possible to match other Canon cameras’ look with Canon Log 3 and Wide Dynamic Range picture settings.

The flexible connectivity options include 12G-SDI and 3G-SDI, HDMI or IP, which allow the seamless transmission of 4K60P, for high-quality, consistent broadcasts. The CR-N700 also includes professional dual XLR audio inputs, Time code, and GEN-LOCK, for different production needs.

Enhanced control

Canon’s latest PTZ camera offers the same intuitive control as other models in the line. The advanced drive mechanism enables movements as slow and precise as 0.1° per second, meaning operators can capture cinematic shots. Compatible with both Canon’s RC-IP100 controller and Remote Camera Control Application, as well as selected third-party controllers, this further simplifies integration with existing production setups. With the CR-N700’s crop function, broadcasters can take two separate feeds from a single PTZ camera. They can select up to two regions of interest within the 4K frame and output them as a separate feeds in HD resolutions. This feature is perfect for productions with limited PTZ cameras on site.

Canon CR-N700 Key Features:

  • Dual Pixel AF with iTR AF X
  • 1.0-inch Type CMOS sensor with DIGIC DV7 Processor achieves 4K60P 4:2:2 10-bit
  • 15x Optical Zoom (30x Advanced Zoom)
  • Multiple protocols including NDI|HX, SRT, FreeD, RTMP(S), RTP, RTSP, Standard communication protocol & Canon XC Protocol
  • Enhanced connectivity with 12G-SDI, 3G-SDI, and HDMI output
  • Canon CR-N500 and CR-N300 PTZ Camera Firmware Update

The new firmware update for the Canon CR-N500 and CR-N300 PTZ cameras adds SRT and FreeD protocols. SRT protocol is a widely used video transmission protocol for live broadcasts that provides both low latency and error correction for smooth video over public internet connections. FreeD protocol is also a widely used protocol for transmitting camera positioning information, allowing the camera to be used in virtual applications such as virtual studio systems. Both protocols are supported by the CR-N700, and are now available on the CR-N300 and CR-N500 with firmware version 1.2.0 that is currently available for download.

MELVILLE, NY, September 7, 2022– Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced the launch of four professional camcorders – the XA65, XA60, XA75, and XA70 – alongside the VIXIA HF G70 camcorder. The new camcorders are suited to a wide range of uses, including documentary, corporate events, and education. Capable of capturing amazing 4K quality content and HD UVC Streaming via USB-Ci, with advanced autofocus and face detection functionality, these models offer excellent performance. All of them enable MP4 and On-Screen Display (OSD) recording, while the four professional camcorders feature XF-AVC recording to support broadcast applications. Additionally, Canon has announced a firmware update for the XF605 camcorder.

High-Quality 4K Capture

With Canon’s line-up of compact camcorders, content creators can easily capture stunning 4K footage in multiple scenarios. Powered with the DIGIC DV6 image processor and leveraging the 1/2.3-inch type CMOS sensor and 1.0-inch type CMOS sensor, respectively, the XA65/XA60 and XA75/XA70 are capable of shooting 4K UHD and Full HD images using oversampling for superb HD quality, making them perfect for a wide range of shooting scenarios. When coupled with Canon’s intelligent optical design, these camcorders offer impressive zoom functionality in a lightweight body. Achieving a 35mm equivalent focal length, the XA65/XA60 offer a 20x optical zoom and the XA75/XA70 a 15x zoom. All professional models support 40x digital zoom, which extends to 800x in the XA65/XA60 and 600x in the XA75/XA70. These models are also designed to improve operability with a new, large 3.5 inch Touch Panel LCD Monitor and high-resolution Ocular EVF with impeccable video capabilities.

Precision Focus, Steady Footage

With Canon’s precision AF systems, the XA65/XA60 and XA75/XA70 help content creators lock onto their subjects and easily follow the action. Featuring Dual Pixel CMOS AF, the XA75/XA70 models are capable of fast and accurate focusing, which couples with the Dual Pixel focus guide to help make manually focusing on a subject easy. The XA65/XA60 line-up employs an advanced Hybrid AF system for precise focusing even in low light situations. All offer adjustable focusing speeds for either fast or smooth AF, which can also be controlled via the 3.5 inch LCD display, enabling operators to easily set the focus by touching a single AF point. For excellent accuracy and convenience, especially in busy environments where operators need to keep a subject in shot, Face Detection AF and Face Tracking are available. All feature manual focus, which can be set either by the focus/zoom ring, or the control ring on the lens of the XA75/XA70. Employing 5-axis image stabilization, these models capture steady, virtually shake-free footage.

Versatile Recording Formats

Featuring a range of flexible recording options, the XA65/XA60 and XA75/XA70 can seamlessly fit into multiple professional workflows. With a host of specialist recording options, including Slow and Fast Motion, on-screen display recording, which embeds the date and time into the video image, and an infrared mode to capture footage in the dark, these camcorders can be used for a wide range of use cases. They can also be easily integrated into a multi-camera setup thanks to the custom picture menu, allowing users to color match footage with other Canon cameras. For professional sound capture, the XA65/XA60 and XA75/XA70 have two XLR audio inputs and 4-channel linear PCM to set the recording level and input sensitivity.

New to the XA and VIXIA Series of camcorders, OSD recording embeds date, time, timecode and other data into your original camera files, effectively “time stamping” the information into each frame of video, a requirement for legal and law enforcement videographers.

Enhanced Connectivity Options

Canon’s new professional camcorders offer a range of connectivity options to enable simple and fast transmission of high-resolution video. The XA65/XA60 and XA75/XA70 can stream HD video in UVC via USB-Ci through a compatible PC – great for education or houses of worship which increasingly offer both in-person and virtual services. Unlock Your Inner Filmmaker

Designed for aspiring filmmakers and documentarians, the VIXIA HF G70 is a multi-functional camcorder delivering professional capabilities in an easy-to-use form factor so they can shoot like a pro. Utilizing a 1/2.3-inch type CMOS sensor and high-quality 20x Zoom lens, this camcorder captures 4K UHD video in MP4 and oversampled HD footage for impeccable video resolution. HDMI and USB-C output enable users to turn the VIXIA HF G70 into a web camera for high-quality video calls and sharing content online. Additional scene modes are also available, including night mode, on-screen display recording, and audio scene mode, which adds sound recording that is tuned to the shooting environment.

XF605 Firmware Update

Canon has also added a firmware update for the XF605 camcorder in response to feedback and requests from users. The firmware v1.0.1.1 offers greater efficiency for broadcasters, and more versatile shooting options for content creators using the XF605 – a professional broadcast camera designed for solo shooters.

To meet the growing demand for remote and live production, this latest firmware update adds Canon’s XC protocol, enabling the XF605 to work alongside other compatible Canon products within a multi-camera system. Combining the excellent performance of the camera with advanced network technologies, broadcasters can seamlessly integrate the XF605 into their setup and control the ISO, aperture, Custom Picture, and AF of all cameras from a single point. The v1.0.1.1 firmware also introduces a new 4K Intra 60P/50P recording option alongside XF-AVC Intra 410Mbps, creating a lightweight, high-quality codec that helps to minimize storage costs.

Powered by Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF, users can now enjoy the benefit of Face and Eye Detection AF and tracking in both fast and slow-motion shooting, perfect for capturing fast-paced action. For even more options, the firmware now also adds support for vertical shooting – a feature first seen in the EOS C70. This feature is great for digital signage, where content creators need to capture 4K content in a portrait format. For simple operation in vertical shooting mode, the monitor and on-screen menu change orientation.

A camcorder designed for single operators and streamlined crews, such as on-the-ground broadcasting, the v1.0.1.1 firmware gives operators the ability to monitor all four audio channels in the on-screen meter display. Users can now select assignable button 11 as the record button – ideal for those shooting on a tripod or in a vertical orientation. Also added is a feature that retains the selected shooting mode while switching from standard to Slow and Fast shooting.

Responding to feedback from customers and end users and the broader adoption of multi-camera setups for live and remote production, this firmware levels up the performance of the XF605 and enables it to be easily integrated into multi-camera setup.

Canon Expands Product Line-Up for Broadcast and Filmmaking

Canon’s New Tools Give Broadcasters and Filmmakers Enhanced Camera Functionality and the Flexibility to Create High-Quality 4K Content, Within Multiple Streamlined Workflows

MELVILLE, NY, September 7, 2022 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today strengthened its cinema and broadcast offering, in line with user needs, with a suite of products. This includes the CINE-SERVO 15-120mm T2.95-3.95 EF/PL (CN8x15 IAS S), Canon’s latest 8K CINE-SERVO lens for a broad range of productions; the EU-V3, a modular expansion unit for the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III cameras; a Cinema EOS firmware update; and the DP-V2730[i], a 27-inch 4K professional reference display that may seamlessly fit into workflows of broadcasters and filmmakers.

Capture the World Cinematically: CINE-SERVO 15-120mm T2.95-3.95 EF/PL (CN8x15 IAS S)

With a superb combination of focal range, compact size, and lightweight, the CINE-SERVO 15-120mm T2.95-3.95 EF/PL (CN8x15 IAS S) supports Super 35mm and Full-Frame[ii] sensor cameras, making it ideal for a range of cinema and broadcast productions. With its versatile focal range from a wide 15mm, up to an impressive telephoto range of 120mm, the lens can further extend up to 180mm via the built-in 1.5x extender. To support future productions, 8K optical performance can be maintained across the full focal length, providing consistently high image quality across the entire frame.

The CINE-SERVO 15-120mm T2.95-3.95 EF/PL (CN8x15 IAS S) features Canon’s renowned warm color science, matching the existing range of Canon’s cinema lenses – and an 11-blade aperture, producing a beautiful, round bokeh. Offering outstanding optical performance – and breathtaking image quality for HDR, 4K, and 8K productions – the lens supports EF mount communication and advanced metadata capture with support for Cooke /i Technology™. The PL mount version of the lens is also the first Canon CINE-SERVO lens to enable both ZEISS eXtended Data™ (XD) communication and Cooke /i Technology™. Featuring the same 16-bit encoder found in Canon’s broadcast and existing CINE-SERVO lenses, which provides accurate lens position, zoom, focus, and iris metadata, the information and communication functions between the lens and camera are paramount for VFX, virtual, and cinema productions.

The high-end CINE-SERVO 15-120mm T2.95-3.95 EF/PL (CN8x15 IAS S) is available in both EF and PL mount, featuring a powerful and detachable servo motor drive unit. This adds to the versatility of the lens as it allows for live production and documentary-friendly Studio and Field- operation. The drive unit’s ergonomic hand grip and zoom rocker make on-the-go, shoulder/ENG-style shooting easy. With the drive unit’s two 20-pin ports for attaching zoom and focus controls and a third 20-pin that provides 16-bit encoded metadata for virtual systems, the lens also fits nicely into a tripod-mounted studio-style configuration.

EU-V3: Modular Expansion Unit for Live Production, Compatible with The EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III Cameras

With the increased move towards large format sensor cameras for broadcast, events, and live sports production – providing viewers with a unique perspective when watching their favorite teams play – Canon has listened to user requirements with the EU-V3 expansion module for both the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III. Building on both cameras’ modular design, it expands and supports specific functionality for multi-camera and live productions.

For studio and live production use, the EU-V3 has a 4-pin XLR DC power input for constant power to both the expansion module and the camera body – no need for external batteries to power the devices.

The EU-V3 also offers an SDI return video feature, allowing real-time monitoring of a live broadcast feed from a production switcher. The return output destination can be selected from the VIDEO, EVF-V50, MON/HDMI, and SDI-OUT terminals. The EU-V3 also enables Tally support to alert the camera operator and the subject being captured. Both SDI Return video and Tally functions are essential for informing camera operators and their subjects of when their camera feed is live and the current status of the production.

The lens focus position can also be displayed on-screen when using the EU-V3 – with compatible broadcast and CINE-SERVO lenses via 12-pin serial communication. The Focus Position Meter, which users can choose to display along the top or right side of the screen, allows users to register multiple focus positions on a distance scale and highlights when the focus is achieved during manual operation – such as when selecting the finish line for a race.

The EU-V3 can be combined with the CINE-SERVO 15-120mm T2.95-3.95 EF/PL (CN8x15 IAS S) lens on the EOS C500 Mark II and EOS C300 Mark III cameras.

Cinema EOS Firmware: Expanding Horizons

Q&A Session Summary

Interesting Info from the 2Q 2022 Analyst Meeting Q&A Session Summary

Q1. What is your outlook for the external environment in 2023 and the sustainability of your growth going forward?

A1. Even if production around the world recovers smoothly, it will probably take around a year for the inflation caused by the shortage of goods, which arose from supply-chain disruptions etc., to subside naturally. We expect to continue growing as we have transformed our business portfolio and will actively invest to further enhance our products.

Q3. Amid concern that semiconductor capital spending will slowdown, what is your outlook for semiconductor lithography equipment demand in 2023?

A3. Considering the current situation of semiconductor shortages and the technological innovation that is occurring now, we expect demand to remain strong. For this reason, we will continue to invest in production expansion, with a plan to increase our production capacity by at least 50% in the future.

Q5. What is your outlook for the camera market going forward? Additionally, will you continue to offer both Mirrorless and DSLR cameras?

A5. The camera market has largely bottomed out at its current size. Going forward, we expect the professional and advanced amateur segment to expand further and that products will become more highly developed. Accordingly, we expect the overall market to grow from now on. As for DSLR cameras, we will continue to supply products as long as there is demand.

Imaging System Relevant Quotes from the Presentation Material

The impact from Shanghai’s COVID lockdown was larger than expected, and we were unable to produce products in the quantity we planned for in the second quarter. Though this will impact sales in the third quarter, we were able to expand sales in the second quarter by taking advantage of our inventory.

As for Imaging, unit sales of camera bodies, because of product shortages, remained below those of last year. However, supported by strong sales of interchangeable lenses, we posted double-digit growth in both sales and profit, and our operating profit ratio increased to 16.1%.

As for changes in foreign exchange rates, due to significant depreciation of the yen against the U.S. dollar and euro, which was approximately 20 yen and 6 yen, respectively, the impact on operating profit was a positive 28.2 billion yen.

As for parts shortages, we have been promoting measures, which include changing the design of our products in order to use alternative parts, and expanding our supplier base. However, due to Shanghai’s COVID lockdown, we have seen a new round of parts shortages, which has led to some delay in production of mainly printing equipment and cameras. For laser printers and cameras, where a full recovery by year-end is difficult to expect, though we lowered our projection for unit sales, we will adjust prices and shift sales to higher priced products through a change in product mix, to absorb some of the impact. And coupled with the tailwind of yen depreciation we raised our full-year projection for the entire company.

As for the camera market, the launch of new mirrorless cameras and interchangeable lenses by each company is supporting continued strong demand. However, due to the global shortage of parts since last year and Shanghai’s COVID lockdown, the supply of products has been insufficient to meet demand. As a result, we expect the market to be 5.45 million units, which is around the same level as last year.

In the second quarter, while the shortage of product supply caused camera body unit sales to continue to be below those of last year, we expect to turn to increase as production recovers from the second half of the year. Even under a situation of declining unit sales, we raised the ratio of full-frame mirrorless cameras for which we prioritize production and sales, and significantly increased RF lens sales to post a double-digit increase in net sales overall.

Canon Introduces RF24mm F1.8 Macro IS STM and RF15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM - Two New Compact and Lightweight Wide-Angle RF-Mount Lenses

Both Lenses Are Ideal for Entry Level and Photography Enthusiasts Looking for The Next Lens After The Standard Zoom

MELVILLE, NY, July 12, 2022 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today the launch of two new RF-Mount lenses, the RF24mm F1.8 Macro IS STM and RF15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM. The lenses are both high-value, compact and lightweight wide-angle additions to the RF-Mount family and pair perfectly with the complete lineup of EOS R cameras, including the newly announced Canon EOS R10 and EOS R7 cameras.

The Canon RF24mm F1.8 Macro IS STM lens is a large-diameter, wide-angle fixed focal length lens designed for capturing bright and clear images with beautiful bokeh and macro capabilities to get even closer, both features not possible with a standard kit lens. Will Cadena, wedding and portrait photographer touts the focal length saying, "I love this lens! It helps give you the feeling you are right there in the action, and the focal length really directs your eye to the center of the frame."

Thanks to the wide-angle of view and built-in STM motor that tracks focus with natural movement, the new RF24mm lens is optimized for video use, particularly vlogging and other social media uses.

Canon RF 24mm F1.8 Macro IS STM Lens

Additional Features of the RF24mm F1.8 Macro IS STM Lens Include:

  • Fast F1.8 maximum aperture for great control over depth of field and bokeh, low-light shooting, and video recording, with fast and reliable autofocus.
  • Excellent image quality: highlights include a UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass element, one aspheric element, and Canon SSC (Super Spectra Coating) to help minimize ghosting and flare.
  • Minimum focus distance of approx. 5.5 In./0.14 m; close-up magnification 0.5x at minimum focus distance.
  • Optical image stabilization — up to 5.5 stops* of shake correction. Up to 6.5 stops Coordinated IS when paired with EOS R series cameras featuring In-Body Image Stabilizer (IBIS).
  • Dedicated, programmable Control Ring with click-stop operation.
  • Equivalent to approximately 38mm coverage when used on cameras with APS-C size image sensors.
  • Impressively compact and light at only 0.6 lbs/270g.
  • Circular (9 blades) aperture for beautiful, soft backgrounds.

The Canon RF15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens is an ultra wide-angle zoom lens designed for a variety of image-capturing moments such as dynamic landscapes and natural snapshots. Travel vlogger Juliana Broste (@TravelingJules) says that a wide-angle lens is her go to, "I’ve got options–whether I’m standing super close to my subject or backing up to get a sense of a place, I’m covered."

Like the new RF24mm, this new lens has macro capabilities and produces images with beautiful bokeh, with the added flexibility of a zoom range. The RF15-30 is another excellent option for photographers looking to go beyond the standard zoom lens.

"The RF15-30 F4.5-6.3 IS STM makes it easy to film handheld, so you can stay light on your feet and move about freely. So long shaky shots!"

Travel Vlogger, Juliana Broste

Additional Features of the Canon RF15-30mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens Include:

  • Equivalent to approximately 24–48mm coverage when used on cameras with APS-C size image sensors.
  • Excellent image quality: highlights include two UD (Ultra-low Dispersion) glass elements, one aspheric element, and Canon SSC (Super Spectra Coating) to help minimize ghosting and flare.
  • Optical Image Stabilization — up to 5.0 stops* of shake correction. Up to 7.0 stops of Coordinated IS when paired with EOS R series cameras featuring In-Body Image Stabilizer (IBIS).
  • Equivalent to approximately 24–48mm coverage when used on cameras with APS-C size image sensors.
  • Minimum focus distance of approx. 11 in./0.28m (5.1 In./0.13m in manual focus at 15mm zoom position.)
  • Canon STM (stepping motor) focus drive, especially suited for smooth, quiet video AF operation.
  • Impressively compact and light — approx. 0.9 lbs./390g.

To honor their legacy, Canon developed the Canon Legends website, featuring iconic images created by these renowned photographers over their long and illustrious careers.

"Through its Explorers of Light program, Canon has worked with some of the most successful and iconic names in the history of photography and creating the Canon Legends program is one way we can honor and preserve their legacy," said Tatsuro "Tony" Kano, executive vice president and general manager of Canon U.S.A.’s Imaging Technologies & Communications Group. "They continue to be relevant members of our industry as mentors, teachers, and as active photographers. They offer a wealth of experience and are excited to share that knowledge with the next generation of creatives. Canon Legends Participate in NFT Collection

Canon announced that several members of its Canon Legends program have partnered with Immutable Image to create NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) from a limited collection of their photographs and publish them as a collective. "The Legends Mint" will drop on OpenSea, one of the largest peer-to-peer NFT marketplaces, on June 30, 2022. The photographers are partnering with Immutable Image, which is dedicated to introducing iconic photographs – past, present, and future – to a new generation of art lovers and collectors.

Canon Legends Partner With Immutable Image To Create NFTs From Iconic Photographs

"The Legends Mint" NFT Collection Brings Iconic Photographs to a New Generation and Creates a Parallel Revenue Stream to Traditional Gallery Print Sales for Photographers

MELVILLE, NY, June 15, 2022 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced that several members of its exclusive Canon Legends program have partnered with Immutable Image to create NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) from a limited collection of their photographs and publish them as a collective. "The Legends Mint" will drop on June 30, 2022, using the Solana blockchain on OpenSea, one of the world’s largest peer-to-peer NFT marketplaces. Immutable Image and Canon are dedicated to bringing iconic photography direct from photographers to the NFT community in innovative and accessible ways.

Canon Legends is a program created by Canon to honor and preserve the legacy and leadership of some of the most accomplished photographers of our time and former members of its renowned Explorers of Light program. Legends participating in this first-of-its-kind Canon Legends NFT collection include Sam Abell, Barbara Bordnick, Gregory Heisler, Ryszard Horowitz, Walter Iooss, Jr., Melvin Sokolsky, and Joyce Tenneson.

"Canon understands that advancements in technology can translate to new platforms for sharing iconic works, which is what the world of NFTs is doing for photography," explains Tatsuro "Tony" Kano, executive vice president and general manager of Canon U.S.A.’s Imaging Technologies & Communications Group. "Canon wanted to help some of its Legends explore this medium and needed to find an organization familiar with blockchain technology and who, at their core, had an appreciation for photography and the arts. When Immutable Image approached us with their mission and impressive credentials in this space, we knew they were the right partner for these photographers."

"We are honored and very excited to be working with some of the most renowned names in the history of photography and look forward to introducing some of their iconic photos to a new visual platform and a new generation of collectors," said Bjorn Iooss, co-founder of Immutable Image and veteran professional photographer. "Our mission is to support both the photographic and NFT communities by building a new and diverse group of collectors for this culturally vital visual art form and introducing the work of these seven legendary photographers is an incredible start."

The Legends Mint

"Minting," in the world of NFTs, is a term used for publishing tokens (in this case, photographs) on the blockchain to make them available for others to purchase. Immutable Image is curating "The Legends Mint" collection of seven legendary photographers whose works focus on sports, fashion, fine art, portraiture, travel, still life, and pre-digital special effects photography. Each photographer is offering exceptional photographs to "The Legends Mint," with a total supply of editions to be announced. There will be exclusive 1/1 NFTs available from each participating photographer along with multiple edition NFTs.

All participating purchasers of this Mint will receive a randomly selected, unique NFT photograph from "The Legends Mint." Purchases will not include copyright or commercial rights to the image itself. Instead, it will present a unique and limited edition NFT, much like the purchase of a traditional, limited-edition print from a gallery or directly from the artist. The rarity and variance of what purchasers receive will be in the edition size of the image, the artist, and the imagery itself.

"I have to admit that the notion of selling my work in limited editions or as one-of-a-kind art on a digital platform that offered no tangible hard-copy print was a bit foreign to me, but equally intriguing," explained Canon Legend Ryszard Horowitz, who is widely recognized as a pioneer of special effects photography predating digital imaging. "I’ve always been attracted to new ways of creating and sharing my work, so I thought this was an interesting opportunity to explore. I’m also honored and thrilled to be collaborating with these other legendary photographers, most of whom I’ve known my entire career and I’m grateful to Canon for bringing us together."

In addition to creating a truly fair and affordable way to collect iconic photography, NFTs are generating a completely new channel for photographers to generate revenue. "The sale of NFTs and traditional print sales are parallel offerings that can co-exist together," explains Bjorn Iooss. "In fact, NFTs can provide revenue in perpetuity," he said, explaining that photographers will continue to receive commissions on the resale of photographs already on the Blockchain, something they do not receive in the traditional open market. "Photographers traditionally received payment from the initial sale of a print, but nothing from the resale of that same print. This changes everything."

Ideal for hobbyists and general photography enthusiasts, the EOS R7 is the quintessential camera to take your photography to the next level. It is a powerful camera choice for those seeking an upgrade to their travel and vacation photos or to capture life-long family memories while opening a new world of creative and professional possibilities. The EOS R10 is perfect for content creators looking for a camera option to capture high-quality action videos and images of sports, wildlife, and motorsports.

As the market share leader for mirrorless cameras in the United States during Q1 of 20221, Canon looks to solidify their position with the addition of new offerings within the EOS R lineup. Canon has released first quarter 2022 financial results to the Investor Relations page.

Imaging System Relevant Quotes from the Presentation Material

During the quarter, countries prioritized economic activity even as the Omicron variant spread Despite this, the global economy outlook became increasingly unclear due to accelerated inflation caused by supply shortages as well as the Ukraine issues.

In response to continuing parts shortages and logistical constraints, we have worked to maximize production by switching to alternative parts, cultivating new suppliers, negotiating with suppliers and by adopting a flexible production system. As a result, we were able to supply products largely in line with our plan, increasing net sales by 4.4 to 879.4 billion yen, and maintaining momentum, posting our fifth consecutive quarter of sales growth.

While being impacted by increases in material, logistical, and other costs, we promoted further efficiency based on a solid earnings foundation that was established through structural reform and re organizing into industry oriented groups. As a result, we were able to raise our performance even amid the unstable business environment, achieving an increase in profit of 76.1 billion yen in operating profit and 46.0 billion yen in net income.

As for Imaging, although we posted an increase in net sales thanks to growth in interchangeable lens unit sales, profit decreased due to the booking of one off expenses linked to the closing of a factory.

Changes in exchange rates, in particular the yen’s depreciation against the U S dollar, had a positive impact on operating profit of 11.0 billion yen.

As for costs, although the impact was negative due to the rise in parts pricing and logistical costs, we were able to partially offset this impact by raising the price of our products.

As for expenses, while we continued to invest in the development and sales of new businesses, overall expenses decreased due to special factors, including the sale of an office that was determined unnecessary after a review of branch functions by our U.S. sales company and the closing of a production site.

We expect inflation to continue in the form of higher prices for resources, energy, and food, resulting from the conflict in Ukraine and the prolonged impact of COVID 19 For these reasons the IMF lowered its world economic outlook for growth this year to 3.6. However, the movement of countries toward economic normalization is expect to continue.

Under these circumstances, we cannot accurately predict when the parts shortage situation, which is the major reason for the product supply shortage, will settle down, but expect the situation to gradually improve as we enter the second half of the year. However, one year has passed since we started implementing measures such as switching to alternative parts through design change, finding new suppliers, and setting up production structures at multiple sights and company wide efforts are showing steady results.

As for our products, expectations for strong demand remains unchanged and by steadily supplying products, we will link backorders as well as regular orders to sales. Based on this, we raised our projection for sales by 110 0 billion yen, bringing the total close to 4 trillion, as we aim to grow 13.3 to 3 trillion 980.0 billion yen.

As for profit, we expect to increase net income by 17.4 to 252 billion yen and raise operating profit by 27.7 to 360.0 billion yen We will achieve this by offsetting the effects of various cost increases through price increases, cost reductions, and expense savings, based on the solid profit structure we have built up through reforms we have implemented so far.

Changes in exchange rate assumptions, in particular expectations that the yen will remain weak against the U S dollar, is forecasted to have a positive 25.2 billion yen impact on operating profit.

As for costs, we will absorb the significant impact, which mainly consists of international shipping costs, by appropriately reflecting this in our pricing.

Canon Releases Q1 2022 Financial Results – Imaging

Demand, mainly coming from professionals and advanced amateurs, continues to be strong as full frame mirrorless cameras released by each company stimulates the market. As a result, we expect the 2022 market to grow by 5% compared to last year to 5.65 million units, which also includes some carry over from last year due to supply shortages

In the first quarter, unit sales of interchangeable lens cameras were below those of last year due to product supply shortages. However, sales increased due to a rise in average selling prices, as we prioritized the supply of high end models such as the EOS R 5 and EOS R 6 and also due to a significant increase in sales of RF lenses.

For the full year, even as the shortage of parts continues, we will continue to increase our product supply by using parts secured through purchases from new suppliers or by switching to alternative parts. At the same time, we will work to achieve our aim of sales and profit growth, fulfilling backorders to sell 3 million units, 10% more than last year.

This year as well, we will promote the enhancement of our lineup of camera bodies and interchangeable lenses, which include two new Super-telephoto fixed focal length RF lenses announced in February. As long telephoto lenses with focal lengths of 1200 mm and 800 mm, these lenses are extremely compact and lightweight, features that are expected to contribute to more people purchasing them.

Going forward, we will continue to enhance the overall value of the R system, including bodies and lenses to solidify our position as a top manufacturer of mirrorless cameras.

From Canon USA:

Canon Announces New Flex Zoom Lens Series of EF Cinema Lenses with Wide T2.4 Aperture Designed for Full-Frame Cameras

MELVILLE, NY, April 12, 2022 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today the launch of a new series of lenses for the company’s EF Cinema Lens lineup — the Flex Zoom Lens series of lenses, which were developed to create cinema-style productions with greater workflow efficiency. The first lenses in the series are the CN-E20-50mm T2.4 L F/FP wide-angle zoom lens and the CN-E45-135mm T2.4 L F/FP telephoto zoom lens.

Designed in the pursuit of cinematic beauty, the new large-aperture lenses feature both high-level optical design and performance while maintaining the style and ease-of-use of Canon’s EF Cinema lens series. With the introduction of the zoom lenses featuring focal length ranges of 20-50mm for wide-angle and 45-135mm for telephoto, Canon now offers zoom lenses that cover the same range as its six existing prime (single focal length) lenses. The versatility of these new lenses supports efficient production workflows for a wide range of scenarios, including film, TV programs, commercials, and much more.

When paired with full-frame or large-format cameras, these lenses fully leverage the cameras’ signature shallow depth-of-field look and provide smooth and natural background blur, helping to produce powerful storytelling imagery. The lenses also maintain a bright T2.4 aperture1 across their entire zoom ranges allowing for image capture in both natural light and darker environments. This feature helps to reduce the need for intricate lighting setups, enabling more efficient and cost-effective video production workflows.

Engineered with an optical configuration that creates the optimal placement of lens elements, including a large-aperture aspherical lens and an anomalous dispersion glass lens, the CN-E20-50mm T2.4 L F/FP and the CN-E45-135mm T2.4 L F/FP lenses help reduce the potential for color smudging and chromatic aberrations. This enables them to maintain high optical performance from the center of the image to the periphery when paired with 8K cameras.

In addition to supporting EF-mount data transmission2, the new lenses are also compatible with /i Technology3 from Cooke Optics. With this capability, recording metadata such as focus, zoom, aperture, and lens model can be transmitted via the lens mount for visualization on the camera itself. This additional information helps to contribute to more efficient workflows not only during on-location recording, but also during post-production and editing.

Pricing and Availability

The Canon CN-E20-50mm T2.4 L F/FP wide-angle zoom lens and Canon CN-E45-135mm T2.4 L F/FP telephoto zoom lens are scheduled to be available in early June 2022 and early September 2022 for an estimated retail price of $21,999.00.*

From Canon USA:

Canon EOS System Celebrates 35th Anniversary

MELVILLE, NY, February 23, 2022 — In March 2022, Canon Inc. will celebrate the 35th anniversary of the launch of the company’s EOS System, which includes EOS-series interchangeable-lens cameras and a diverse range of system accessories, such as interchangeable EF and RF lenses.

Canon’s EOS System made its debut in March 1987 with the launch of the EOS 650 single-lens reflex (SLR) camera and EF lenses1. An acronym of “Electro Optical System” while also carrying the name of the Greek Goddess of the dawn, the EOS series came to light in 1987 as the world’s first fully electronic mount system, representing a new generation of AF SLR cameras.

During the film-camera era, EOS SLR cameras received high praise from a wide range of users for their innovative technologies and designs focused on Canon’s key concepts of high-speed and ease-of-use. During this period, the company launched the top-of-the-line professional model EOS-1 in 1989. With the introduction of the compact lightweight EOS Kiss (EOS Rebel XS and EOS 500 in other regions) in 1993, Canon expanded its user base to the more consumer-orientated customer.

Following the introduction of the EOS D30 in 2000, with the rise and popularization of digital SLR cameras in full swing, Canon developed innovative models such as the high-speed and high-image-quality professional-oriented EOS-1D (2001), the EOS Kiss Digital (2003, EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D in other regions) which appealed to a broad user base, and the EOS 5D Mark II (2008), which featured Full HD video recording. In 2012, Canon introduced the Cinema EOS System, transforming EOS video technology and marking Canon’s entry into the video production industry.

From there, Canon continued to develop equipment for an increasingly broad range of users. In 2018, the EOS R System was born from Canon’s desire to construct the optimal rear lens element diameter and shorter distance (back focus) for a Full-Frame image sensor. The company followed up in 2020 with the EOS R5, the world’s first digital camera to feature 8K recording2. In 2021, the EOS R3 was launched, featuring eye-control AF capability and the EOS VR System for recording VR content.

Enabling visual expression through still photography, video, and even VR content, the EOS system helps to expand the possibilities of visual expression with a lineup comprising 21 EOS series cameras3 and 104 RF and EF lenses4. Further reinforcing the company’s long-running and expansive user base, Canon has maintained the world’s No.1 share5 of digital interchangeable-lens cameras since 2003 — a total of 18 years running.

Canon will continue to refine its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technology to create an even more robust EOS System that meets the needs of an increasingly broad user base.

1 The EF35-70mm f/3.5-4.5, EF35-105mm f/3.5-4.5 and EF50mm f/1.8 were released alongside the EOS 650.

2 Among interchangeable-lens digital cameras available as of July 8, 2020.

3 Includes 5 digital cinema cameras for video production. As of February 24, 2022.

4 Includes 30 EF cinema lenses (EF and PL mount) and 4 lens extenders. As of February 24, 2022.

5 Shares of unit sales. Based on Canon research.

From Canon USA:

Canon U.S.A., Inc. Successfully Stops a New Method of Importing Counterfeit Goods Into the United States

MELVILLE, NY, February 9, 2022 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., and its parent company, Canon Inc. of Japan, are pleased to announce that they have successfully reached an agreement with one of China’s leading logistics and fulfillment companies in a dispute over the warehousing and shipping of counterfeit "Canon" camera batteries into the United States for China-based sellers. As part of the settlement, the fulfillment/shipping company agreed to cease distribution of infringing products to consumers in the United States.

Over the last two years, Canon’s investigation into counterfeiting uncovered a new shipping method that China-based sellers are using to bring their infringing goods into the United States. Instead of shipping the goods directly to consumers in the United States, China-based sellers are now sending their goods in bulk to large fulfillment warehouses that are located in the United States. These warehouses then ship the infringing goods to consumers in the United States. This new method not only enables China-based merchants to indirectly ship their counterfeit goods swiftly to American and Canadian consumers, but also makes it harder for branded manufacturers to track and prevent the flow of counterfeit goods.

"After we discovered that China-based infringers were using this new shipment method to bring counterfeit Canon batteries into the United States, we started working on a creative strategy to remove these counterfeit products from the market. We were able to find an innovative solution by proceeding directly against the fulfillment/warehouser to halt the distribution of these fake goods in the United States," said Seymour Liebman, Executive Vice President, Chief Administrative Officer & General Counsel of Canon U.S.A., Inc. "We believe that we are the first intellectual property owner to successfully stop this new method of importation and distribution, and we hope other companies will follow our lead and utilize this novel approach to stopping counterfeiters."

The Canon companies are represented by Mark Schonfeld, a partner in the Boston office of Burns & Levinson LLP, who negotiated the settlement with the U.S.-based fulfillment company.

Canon aggressively pursues counterfeiters in the United States and around the world to protect its customers from potentially unsafe products that unlawfully use the Canon name, as well as to protect the value, trusted reputation and loyalty that the Canon brand has acquired over decades in producing high quality, safe and reliable products.

Some Relevant Highlight Quotes from the Presentation Material

"...we have begun to see signs of the ... camera market bottoming out..."

" ...by promoting the restructuring of sales organizations, mainly overseas, as well as production bases, we now have a structure in place where mature businesses such as office equipment and cameras can generate solid profit."

"As for Printing and Imaging, profitability recovered to a solid double digit level, despite the impact of supply shortages."

"Currently, the most important issues are the component and logistical constraints, which are expected to gradually improve However, it will take a significant amount of time before the gap between supply and demand disappears, and for the time being, the inflationary trend due to shortages is expected to continue."

"we are steadily switching to substitute parts, and expect to see a gradual improvement after bottoming out in the first quarter. Due to supply constraints last year, we currently have a large number of backorders, which will take a considerable amount of time to fill."

"2021 – Significant improvement in imaging profitability."

"2022 – Market expected to grow 5% to 5.65 million units."

"As for profit, based on the solid structure that was built through continuous efforts to improve business activities, we expect significant growth, including a 17.8% increase in operating profit to 332.0 billion yen and a 14.1% increase in net income to 245.0 billion."

"As for Printing and Imaging, in keeping with last year, we will maintain solid double digit profitability."

"As for camera demand, despite concerns that it would shrink significantly due to the pandemic, demand remained relatively strong This reflects a number of factors, including an increase in the number of people using their extra leisure time to capture videos and photos in the home and disseminating them online, and the impact made by new full frame mirrorless cameras released by each company."

"As for the size of the market in 2021 although it shrank by 200 thousand units, due to the insufficient supply of products by each company, it was still 5.4 million units."

"Our unit sales in 2021 totaled 2.74 million units, 20 thousand units fewer than in 2020 also due to the insufficient supply of products, particularly entry class cameras However, for the EOS R 5 and EOS R 6 sales volumes and price levels remained stable, despite them being in the market for more than a year Additionally, unit sales of our RF lens lineup, which was expanded to 26 lenses through the addition of 8 new products, increased substantially, thanks to their synergy with cameras."

"We have been expanding our core product lineup by increasing the number of highly profitable EOS R systems over the years As a result, the sustained profitability of the camera business has increased significantly, resulting in an overall 25 increase in camera sales and a significant improvement in profitability in 2021."

"In 2022 the size of the camera market is expected to be 5 65 million units, a 5 increase over 2021 which takes into account the carryover from 2021 due to supply shortages."

"In order to capture the growing need for high quality image expression, we will continue to further strengthen the cameras and the RF lenses of the EOS R system."

"Through the timely launch of products that expand the range of choices available to users, we will maintain high profitability by increasing sales and improving our product mix."

From Canon USA:

Ready for Anything: The Canon EOS R5 C True Hybrid, Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera Bridges Cinema EOS and EOS Technology

Ideal for a Wide Variety of Content Producers, Including YouTubers, Wedding, Indie and Documentary Filmmakers, Drone Operators and Multimedia Journalists

MELVILLE, NY, January 19, 2022 – Imagine having the best of both worlds at your fingertips. A Canon camera with equal parts video and still digital imaging power, all in one compact-and-lightweight package. Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is excited to announce the EOS R5 C Full-Frame Mirrorless Camera, a hybrid, RF-mount 8K camera that has something for everyone. The new camera showcases video formats and features from the company’s award-winning Cinema EOS line, alongside select still capabilities that have made the EOS R5 camera a popular and trusted choice among imaging professionals and enthusiasts alike i.

“Imaging professionals are living in a multimedia world. Gone are the days of only needing to be sufficiently equipped and skilled at video or stills,” said Tatsuro “Tony” Kano, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Canon U.S.A.’s Imaging Technologies & Communications Group. “The EOS R5 C squarely takes aim at providing end-users with a solution that can tackle all facets of the ever-demanding multimedia and content production landscape. Canon is confident this all-in-one solution can help improve the workflow for a variety of content creators.”

Small, but Mighty

The EOS R5 C camera can record non-stop, uninterrupted 8K/60Pii thanks to an active cooling system. 8K video delivers outstanding definition and realism with four times the resolution of 4K video, enabling unprecedented capabilities in video expression and highly flexible workflows, such as 4K cropping from 8K footage.

The EOS R5 C camera can record High Frame Rate (HFR) video up to 120P at 4K resolution in 4:2:2 10-bit without cropping the sensor, an ideal option when shooting scenes full of fast-paced action or when the camera is paired with a gimbal or drone. Canon’s renowned Dual Pixel CMOS AF is functional even in HFR shooting. Unlike some cameras where audio is not recorded during HFR shooting, the EOS R5 C camera can record .WAV audio as a separate file from video, virtually eliminating the need for separate audio recording.

The EOS R5 C is the first Canon camera to provide internal 8K (8192x4320) 60P Cinema RAW Light recording. Cinema RAW Light is a popular and valuable format found in other Canon Cinema EOS cameras such as the EOS C300 Mark III and EOS C500 Mark II. This feature captures the full dynamic range of the sensor and provides video data with a cinematic look, optimized for advanced grading and HDR, in a more manageable file size than Cinema RAW. Cinema RAW Light now has three newly-developed modes, RAW HQ (high quality), RAW ST (standard quality), and RAW LT (light recording). All three modes are 12-bit regardless of frame rate. The EOS R5 C can also record 8K video in MP4 format, ideal for quicker delivery.

The EOS R5 C supports RAW output via HDMI for ProRes RAW recording with compatible a external recorder iii. When connecting the EOS R5 C with a supported external recorder, users can shoot in Apple ProRes RAW at up to 8K/30P. Proxy data can also be simultaneously recorded to an SD card in-camera, helping to provide efficient post-production operations.

Powerful Still Imaging Performance

With the flip of a switch, the EOS R5 C becomes a familiar force to be reckoned with as a still photography camera. At its core is Canon’s 45-megapixel high resolution, high-speed full-frame CMOS sensor, paired with the equally impressive DIGIC X image processor that provides users an ISO range of 100-51200; expandable to 102400iv. Precise focus and lightning-fast speed are cornerstones of the EOS R5 C, featuring Dual Pixel CMOS AF II and high-speed continuous shooting of up to 12 frames-per-second (fps) in mechanical shutter mode and up to 20 fps in silent electronic shutter mode. This allows users to track and photograph split-second movements of even the most elusive subjects. With EOS iTR AF X and 1,053 Automatic AF zones, it is easier than ever to photograph people using Eye, Face and Head Detection AF, or intuitively track the whole body, face, or eye of cats, dogs, or birds with Animal Detection AFv. For those with the need for speed, the camera also offers vehicle subject detection to track cars and motorcycles accurately, especially in race-type environments. Connectivity like 5GHz and 2.4GHz Wi-Fi®vi and Bluetooth®vii connectivity is also included for the transfer of still images.

Additional Features of the Canon EOS R5 C Camera Include:

  • Supports 8K HDR recording in Hybrid Log Gamma (HLG) and Perceptual Quantization (PQ) formats
  • 4K and 2K oversampling with high-definition debayer algorithm that processes RGB data of the 8K sensor with less incidence of moiré, false colors, and noise
  • XF-AVC codecs offer robust 10-bit 4:2:2 files in a .MXF wrapper for simple compatibility with non-linear editing systems (NLEs) and existing workflows
  • Canon Log 3, which is found in many Canon cinema products, is available for a wider range of grading after shooting
  • Coordinated image stabilization (with Canon lenses equipped with optical IS) helps to correct hand-shake and better anti-vibration performance than electronic IS alone
  • Timecode terminal allowing for multi-camera shooting
  • Canon’s next-generation Multi-Function Shoe is compatible with a variety of accessories, such as an optional TASCAM CA-XLR2d-C XLR microphone adapter (sold separately) for up to 4-channel digital audio
  • RF mount provides access to the expanding lineup of Canon RF lenses, as well as the full lineup of EF lenses (adapter required)
  • Compatible with Canon’s new RF 5.2mm 2.8 L Dual Fisheye lens allowing for stereoscopic 180° VR video capture
  • 13 marked, assignable buttons allow for user-friendly customized operation
  • Compact-and-lightweight at 1.7 lbs. (body only)
  • 3.2-inch variable-angle LCD monitor and high-definition 5.76 million-dot viewfinder
  • Dual card slots: one CFexpress and one SD UHS-II
  • USB Video Class (UVC) connectivity, enabling out of the box use as a streaming video camera
  • A new DC Coupler DR-E6C helps to provide the continuous power needed for the demands of shooting in Cinema RAW Light at high framerates
