Canon U.S.A. Introduces New Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens, The Compact And Highly Mobile Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM

New Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens Delivers an Enhanced IS System Providing Four Shutter Speed Steps of Correction, a Rotation-Type Zoom Ring, and New Optical Element Formula to Help Maximize Image Quality

MELVILLE, N.Y., November 10, 2014 - Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the highly anticipated Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM lens, a second generation compact super-telephoto zoom lens featuring significant advancements in optical quality, image stabilization performance up-to-four steps, and rotating-zoom-ring design. This new L-series super- telephoto zoom lens features Canon L-series weather resistance and rugged magnesium housing to meet the needs of wildlife and sports photographers or photojournalists working out in the elements. Fully compatible with all EOS cameras, the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM features a completely redesigned optical formula containing one Fluorite and one Super UD lens element - a combination unique to lenses in this focal range - to help deliver sharp images with high resolution and contrast. This combination of elements helps thoroughly suppress chromatic aberration throughout the entire zoom range.

"The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM is the logical evolution of the very popular EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM introduced 16 years ago," said Yuichi Ishizuka, President and COO of Canon U.S.A., Inc., "This long awaited, next generation lens was developed to be a highly portable and adaptable telephoto zoom lens for today's modern professional and advanced amateur photographers."

For photographers who want to work as closely as possible to their subjects, the minimum focusing distance of the lens has been reduced to just 3.2 ft. (0.98m), resulting in maximum magnification of 0.31x. The original EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM was well known for its push-pull zoom adjustment, but the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM uses a rotation-type zoom ring similar to the one found on the EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens that allows for more precise adjustments, easier handling, and consistently excellent weight balance during handheld photography. In addition, the lens features an improved zoom torque adjustment ring that allows for the easy setting of zoom tension based on personal shooting preferences. The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM also features an inner focusing system, a powerful yet quiet Ring USM, a high-speed CPU and optimized auto focus (AF) algorithms for fast and accurate autofocusing in various shooting situations.

The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM features three Image Stabilization (IS) modes - standard, panning, and during exposure only. Each IS mode is individually engineered to help provide outstanding results in a wide variety of shooting situations, and all serve to satisfy the personal preferences of photographers based on the type of IS they desire. The optical IS provides up to four shutter speed steps of correction, increased from 1.5 steps in the previous model*. In addition, the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM features Canon's newly developed Air Sphere Coating (ASC) which helps to reduce backlit flaring and ghosting significantly, as well as a 9-bladed circular aperture Electro-Magnetic Diaphragm that helps to enhance beautiful, softly blurred backgrounds.

As with all L-series lenses, the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM is highly resistant to dust and water, with excellent durability in even harsh conditions, ideal for wildlife photographers even in rainforest environments, or sports photographers on the sideline grabbing action shots of the big game. Fluorine coating on the front and rear surfaces of the lens can repel dust particles and water droplets. It also makes smears and fingerprints easy to remove without the use of lens cleaning fluid. Included with the lens is the new ET-83D lens hood, that features a cleverly placed and convenient side window allowing the user to easily adjust specialty filters while the lens hood remains in place. In addition, the EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM is equipped with a newly designed detachable tripod mount which can be removed to reduce weight during handheld operation.

Pricing and Availability

The Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L II USM Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens is scheduled to be available in December 2014 for an estimated retail price of $2,199.00.

Canon U.S.A. Celebrates 75 Years Of Optics Heritage With The Addition Of Three New Lenses

New Lenses Enable Photographers of All Levels to Create Stunning Images

MELVILLE, N.Y., September 15, 2014 - Following on the heels of its milestone of 100 million EF lenses produced worldwide*, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is excited to announce three new lenses adding to it's rich history of developing and delivering outstanding optics to all types of photographers, cinematographers, online content creators and image makers from budding amateurs to the most seasoned professionals. The three new lenses include two EF series lenses - the EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM super telephoto lens and the EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom lens, as well as one EF-S series lens - the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM wide-angle pancake lens. These new lenses will also be the latest addition to Canon's GlassFirst.com online resource, helping image makers explore the Company's vast EF lens portfolio.

"Canon's heritage is rich with over 75 years of optical innovation. Our engineers are dedicated to delivering high-quality optics for everyone from the amateur photographer to directors of photography on Hollywood movie sets," said Yuichi Ishizuka, President and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "And having reached a milestone of 100 million lenses produced earlier this year, Canon launched in celebration its 'Glass First' campaign to assist image makers in realizing the artistic potential offered by our various lenses. These new lenses will fit in well with the ever growing family of Canon optics."

EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM - The Portable Super Telephoto Lens

Super telephoto lenses are essential whether on a safari or the sidelines to bring the image in tight on a subject, but they often are not the lightest lenses to carry around. Canon's new compact and lightweight EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM super telephoto lens will help lighten the load of professional and advanced amateur photographers. At only 4.6 lbs., it is roughly half the weight of the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM lens. The new EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM lens features newly developed gapless dual-layered diffractive optical (DO) elements that help improve optical performance while maintaining virtually the same size and weight as its predecessor. The DO element in the new lens is optimally positioned deeper within the optical formula than in the original EF 400mm DO lens to help reduce flare around backlit subjects. Other optical improvements include the use of a large-diameter ground and polished aspherical element and a UD glass element that work together with the DO elements for thorough correction of spherical, chromatic and other optical aberrations. Canon's original SWC (Sub Wavelength Structure) lens coating is also used internally to help improve resistance to flare. Fluorine coating is applied to the front and rear lens elements to repel dust and make lens cleaning easy. A nine blade curved diaphragm is also incorporated to help produce smooth, natural-looking bokeh in areas outside the depth of field surrounding the main subject.

The new EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM lens features Canon's Optical Image Stabilization with up to four shutter speed steps of correction**. In addition there are three IS modes - standard, panning and during exposure only - that help to provide superb results in a variety of shooting situations. For greater convenience, the Image Stabilizer does not have to be disabled when shooting with a tripod. Four programmable buttons on the front of the lens allow photographers to customize lens and camera operation to fit their unique shooting style, or simply pause autofocus (AF) adjustment at any point to hold focus on a subject in a busy scene. Even in AF mode, full-time manual focus can be employed at any time. The lens also features a Power Focus mode for smooth focus "pulls" ideal for filmmaking. For those mobile shooters and documentarians truly "on-the-go", the lens is also highly resistant to dust and water for durability and reliability when shooting in even the harshest conditions.

Canon EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM Lens

EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM - Smooth Quiet Focus in a Versatile Lens

The new EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens is the first EF-series zoom lens for full-frame sensor cameras to include a lead screw-type stepping motor (STM) that provides virtually silent AF while shooting video. The 24-105mm is one of the most versatile focal range options in the EF lineup as it can be used as a wide-angle lens while out on the town as well as a portrait-length zoom when trying to get closer to your subjects.

The Optical Image Stabilizer provides up to four shutter speed steps of correction,** while two aspheric lenses plus a UD lens combine to provide high-quality results for both still images and video. New to the EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens is a seven group zoom optical formula that enables a conveniently compact design while maintaining high-quality optical performance. The lens' lightweight inner focusing system, high-speed CPU, and improved AF algorithm enables high-speed AF. In addition, the seven bladed circular aperture combined with the optimized lens placement and coatings delivers beautiful, soft bokeh, and exceptional color balance, while helping to minimize ghosting and flare. The new EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM lens provides a lighter and more affordable option with STM focus capabilities to Canon's popular EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM lens.

Canon EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM Lens

EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM - The Slim, Compact Lens That Stacks Up to the Competition

The affordable EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens is the slimmest and lightest Canon EF-S lens ever produced. This compact, lightweight wide-angle "pancake" style lens features STM technology and was developed for photographers and videographers who are aiming to capture bright, clear images with beautiful softly blurred backgrounds at a fixed focal length. The EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM lens features an aspheric lens element and the optimized lens arrangement and coating helps to minimize ghosting and flare while delivering excellent image quality. The seven bladed aperture delivers beautiful, soft backgrounds, while the Electro-Magnetic Drive aperture mechanism uses a micro-stepping driver control for quieter operation, especially useful when shooting video.

Pricing and Availability

The EF 400mm f/4 DO IS II USM and EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM are both scheduled to be available in November for estimated retail prices of $6,899.00 and $149.99 respectively. The EF 24-105mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM is scheduled to be available in December for an estimated retail price of $599.99. For additional information please visit usa.canon.com/consumer

From Canon UK:

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 17 June 2014 – Canon today announces a new addition to its EF-M lens range with the introduction of its first dedicated telephoto zoom lens – the EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM. Designed for Canon’s Compact System Camera, the EOS M, the new EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM features Canon's signature optical performance, advanced Stepping Motor Technology (STM), a 3.5-stop optical Image Stabilizer, and provides a versatile 55-200mm focal range to help users get closer to the subjects they love

Taking you closer
The EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM joins three existing lenses in the EF-M range, which together offer a diverse variety of focal lengths from 11-200mm. The perfect addition to any EOS M kit bag, the new lens opens additional creative possibilities for EOS M shooters through its suitability to capture a wide selection of scenes – from eye-catching portraits at 55mm, to wildlife at 200mm.

Leading optical technologies for incredible images
Developed using the company’s unparalleled optical expertise, the EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM features Canon’s powerful optical Image Stabilizer and STM technology to deliver outstanding levels of detail when shooting stills and movies. When shooting movies specifically, STM technology ensures smooth focus transitions, as focus shifts from one subject to another. The STM mechanism also provides near-silent focusing, giving videographers the ability to shoot movie soundtracks which capture the natural ambience of the scene in front of them. Additionally, thanks to a highly-effective 3.5-stop optical Image Stabilizer, which reduces visible camera shake, users can also shoot sharp stills while using the zoom, and steady movies while capturing action.

Designed to make great photography easy

It has been 2-days short of a year since the last Canon L lens announcement (for the ultra-expensive, but amazing, EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x Lens), so you are not likely surprised to hear that I have been experiencing ever-increasing new-L-Lens withdrawal symptoms. Well, that anxiety has just been lifted. The long Canon pro gear drought has just ended thanks to the announcement of the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens.

The Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS USM Lens review page contains a preview of the lens including:

With a moderate price tag and an impressive-looking MTF chart, I highly recommend that you preorder this lens immediately at B&H to preserve your place in line. This will likely be a very in-demand lens and has the potential to be hard to get for some time. You can always cancel a preorder, but getting a good place in line is far harder to accomplish later.

CANON U.S.A. INTRODUCES THE NEW CANON EOS-1D W DIGITAL SLR CAMERA, DESIGNED FOR “WILDLIFE”

Featuring Canon’s proven 61-Point High Density Reticular AF, Extreme Fast Shooting up to 24 fps, 39.9-Megapixel Near-Full-Frame CMOS Sensor, Outstanding ISO Sensitivity up to 204800, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, Full HD Video Recording, Extreme-Durability Camouflage Finish, Development Announcement of EF 200-600mm f/4L W IS USM/STM Lens

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., April 1, 2014 – Canon U.S.A., Inc. once again shows its leadership in digital imaging by introducing the Canon EOS-1D W "Wildlife" Digital SLR camera, the EOS-1D W is the world's first professional DSLR designed specifically for the needs of wildlife photographers and videographers. A new addition to Canon’s arsenal of professional DSLRs, the EOS-1D W is a progressive EOS-1D series camera based on the EOS-1D X, but loaded with exciting new features.

According to Sakuichi Ishizukara, Canon’s Executive Vice President and General Manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A., “Wildlife photographers make up a large percentage of DSLR camera users. These photographers have specific needs – needs that have long been overlooked.”

“That the new Canon EOS-1D W is going to revolutionize wildlife photography is unquestionable” says Martyn Culbreck after 3 months of field testing the new camera. Mr. Culbreck is the Director of Photography for BBC’s upcoming “Planet Life” series. “We spend weeks waiting for the an animal to be in the right position. When that perfect moment arrives, we cannot risk any camera-related issues causing a missed shot. The EOS-1D W is a game changer. It never misses.”

A New Ultra-High Density Sensor

By utilizing groundbreaking technology first introduced in the EOS 70D, a pair of APS-C format imaging sensors can now be rotated vertically and joined into one very high resolution, near-full frame, 30 x 22.5mm imaging sensor while enjoying the production efficiencies of the smaller sensors. The EOS-1D W natively delivers a 4:3 ratio 7296 x 5472 pixel image for 39.9 megapixels of resolution. Photographers wishing to use the DSLR-conventional 3:2 image ratio can select 7296 x 4864 resolution via an “Aspect Ratio” menu option.

“Wildlife photographers have long had to make a choice between the high pixel density sensor found in the EOS 7D and the better performance of the EOS-1-Series bodies.” Says Akihiro Fumitzu, Director of Professional Imaging, Canon U.S.A. “These photographers now have the highest pixel density Canon DSLR sensor available in the highest performing DSLR camera available.”

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II – The Evolution Continues

Canon's recently-introduced Dual Pixel CMOS AF, a phase-detection autofocus (AF) technology on the camera's image sensor plane, enables users to shoot video with AF capabilities similar to a camcorder. Dual Pixel CMOS AF employs a Canon-patented CMOS sensor technology in which all of the effective pixels are able to perform both still imaging and phase-detection AF simultaneously, resulting in dramatically improved AF performance during Live View and video shooting.

Dual Pixel CMOS AF II extends this technology to allow the EOS-1D W to continuously track subject focus while shooting in high frame rate mode using the viewfinder. By combining information from the conventional phase-detection AF system with information provided by Dual Pixel AF, the EOS 1D-W is able to shoot two frames each time the mirror is raised for a frame rate twice as fast as the EOS-1D X – an eye-opening 24 fps in Extreme-High Speed shooting mode.

New high-quality "L" series lenses incorporating STM are under development to take full advantage of Dual Pixel AF technology for video recording purposes.

Moving the Data Fast

Capturing 39.9 megapixel images at 24 fps requires extreme processing power unavailable until now. In addition to dual DIGIC 5+ image processors and a metering and an AF control-dedicated DIGIC 4 processor, the EOS-1D W incorporates a dedicated DIGIC 6+ image processor. During capture, sensor image data is streamed directly to 32GB of on-processor memory to store up to 220 RAW images before the buffer limit is reached. Upon reaching internal memory capacity, data from the EOS-1D W imaging sensor is optionally streamed directly to a high speed (UHS-1) SDXC memory card for transformation when the processor is idle. By incorporating a user-upgradeable imaging buffer, photographers can choose their own maximum burst rate. A 64GB UHS-1 SDXC buffer memory card extension can store sensor image data for approximately 440 RAW images(1).

Massive Storage Capability

Extreme resolution image files captured at extremely fast rates demand massive storage capabilities. The EOS-1D W provides four SD/SDHC/SDXC memory card slots that can be used successively or optionally configured to RAID 1 (mirrored) or RAID 5 (parity bit stored on a single card). Ultra High Speed (UHS-1) cards are supported with currently available cards providing up to 1TB of total storage.

Impressive in Low Light

That wildlife is typically most active in low light levels is not an issue for the EOS-1D W’s new Low Light Mode. Enabling the Dual Pixel technology to be used for noise reduction in all modes (excluding Extreme-High Speed shooting mode, Live View and video recording) means that unprecedented low noise levels are characteristic of EOS-1D W images. Effective doubling the light sampling at the pixel level yields at least 1.5 stops of noise improvements at all ISO settings.

The Eyes are Always in Focus

Wildlife images usually include at least one eye and Canon recognizes that it is critical that your wildlife subjects' eyes are in focus. The EOS 1D W includes two previously unavailable focus modes - Animal Eye Tracking and Zone Animal Eye Tracking. Animal Eye Tracking builds on the EOS iTR (Intelligent Tracking and Recognition) AF technology incorporated into the EOS-1D X. Utilizing the viewfinder light sensor, Canon's newly developed eye recognition technology can recognize the closest animal eye in the frame and automatically assign the correct AF point to obtain a perfectly focused eye every time. Zone Animal Eye Tracking allows restriction of eye selection to one specific AF zone. For even better performance, Dual Pixel CMOS AF II technology is utilized for eye tracking right into frame borders in High and Extreme-High shooting modes.

Eye-Controlled Focus

Wildlife action can move fast and the needed focus point can change in a split second. Your eyes can follow that action and now your focus point selection can too. Just look your subject in the eyes, concentrate on framing and the 1D W will take care of the rest.

Last seen in the EOS Elan 7NE, Canon revived Eye-Controlled Focus to provide wildlife photographers with a simple way to maintain focus on erratically moving subjects. Zone Eye-Controlled Focus mode can be used in conjunction with Animal Eye Tracking mode.

Eye-Controlled Focus utilizes five strategically placed infrared viewfinder LEDs and advanced tracking algorithms to calculate the corresponding point of focus within the frame. Enabled on the quick control screen, photographers can now activate Eye-Controlled Focus in any AF mode.

Birds-in-Flight Mode

“Capturing birds in flight is a huge challenge to both the photographer and to the camera” claims Canon Explorer of Light Richard Shealing. “Accurate focusing is one of those big challenges.” The EOS-1D W’s new Birds-In-Flight Mode uses a combination of Animal Eye Tracking technology along with Bird Recognition algorithms that prevent the focus from jumping to the background. Also, the shutter release can optionally be programmed to institute a delay to avoid clipped wing tips, ensuring perfect BIF images.

Built for the Outdoors

A camera designed for wildlife photography must be ready to take on the elements. The EOS-1D W incorporates Canon's most extreme weather sealing ever, rated for submersion up to 1M for up to 30 seconds with matched lens mounted(1). The EOS-1D X-inherited magnesium alloy body shell and internal structure has proven its ability to absorb the impacts inevitably encountered in the field.

The Camera that Hides in Plain Sight

Also built for rough use is the EOS-1D W's new exterior finish. In cooperation with Realtree Outdoors and 3M, the EOS-1D W features camouflage patterns such as Hardwood, Waterfowl and Snow. Each pattern has been specifically designed for ultimate concealment while the newly developed nanotechnology finish suppresses glare and provides a sure grip even when wet. The impact and abrasion durability of Canon's new "Wildlife" finish is unprecedented. "There is no reason to cover this camera" says Richard Shealing.

Built-in Wildlife Call

Not only can the EOS-1D W remain hidden, it can bring the wildlife to the camera. By inserting a memory card with your favorite wildlife call recorded on it (MP3 and WAV formats supported), the EOS 1D-W can play back the recording. No longer does the photographer need to carry a duck, turkey, predator, deer or other call with them to attract wildlife. Canon will provide open source MP3 wildlife call audio files at a website to be announced.

Unprecedented Quietness

Sensitive wildlife can be startled by traditional DSLR shutter releases. In Silent mode, the new EOS-1D W incorporates a slightly reduced mirror travel rate to achieve a shutter release that is no louder than the shutter itself. Capture unlimited frames of a strutting gobbler at close range without fear of alarming it.

Always at Work – Introducing the Canon MT-1 Motion Trigger

Never before has it been so easy to get premium-grade wildlife photos. Canon understands that wildlife photography is time consuming. To allow photographers to capture photos while attending to other demands such as work, family and sleep, the Canon MT-1 Motion Trigger is being introduced. Featuring trail cam technology, the hot shoe-mounted MT-1 will trigger the EOS-1D W when wildlife motion is detected within a selected angle of view and focus distance. The MT-1 provides its own hot shoe to support simultaneous flash use.

For remote transmission of images, the EOS 1D W inherits a built-in LAN connection featuring a gigabit Ethernet Jack capable of 1000BASE-T transmission speeds. Optionally supported is the Canon WFT-E6A Wireless File Transmitter featuring wireless LAN support for 802.11n network transfer rates.

Canon's Latest G-series Digital Camera Features a New Type of 1.5-Inch CMOS Sensor, 5x Zoom Lens, Wi-Fi and NFC Capabilities, Full HD and A Three-Inch Touch Tilt LCD Screen

MELVILLE, N.Y., February 11, 2014 – Building upon the success of the PowerShot G1 X digital camera, Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today unveiled its new flagship PowerShot G1 X Mark II, a digital camera designed to meet the evolving needs of today's professional and advanced amateur photographers.

Boasting a sensor that is 4.5x larger than a 1/1.7" sensor found in professional level point-and-shoot cameras, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera can produce high-quality images with a wide dynamic range. It features a new type of 1.5-inch, 12.8 megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor, made by Canon, allowing for optimum performance with an ISO range of 100-12800. This sensor, combined with the DIGIC 6 Image Processor, comprises the Canon HS SYSTEM resulting in faster autofocusing speeds over the PowerShot G1 X camera, allowing photographers to capture detailed, vivid images even in low-light conditions.

Featuring a newly-developed f/2.0 - f/3.9, 5x optical zoom lens (equivalent 24-120mm zoom range) with Dual Control Rings, this new camera provides customized zooming and focus-functionality similar to a DSLR camera. With this wide of an aperture, photographers have the ability to isolate their subjects by separating them from a background that is blurred. This gives more control and creative possibilities when using a PowerShot camera. The Dual Control Rings include a Step Ring to adjust various customizable settings and a Continuous Ring to make focusing adjustments during manual focus, as well as additional customizable settings for manual shooting. The new lens also features a nine-blade aperture to provide beautiful, blurred backgrounds even at full-zoom range.

"The new high-end PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera delivers incredible, professional-level shooting capabilities in a compact camera body making it the ideal second camera for DSLR shooters," said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. "In addition, with the introduction of advanced wireless capabilities such as NFC and enhanced low-light shooting and autofocusing, the G1 X Mark II is a well-rounded professional-level camera that allows photographers to get creative."

Improved Operation and Performance
The PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera is equipped with a new type of Canon-made, 1.5-inch CMOS sensor to help achieve optimal performance from low to high ISO speeds. It has a default aspect ratio of 3:2 which is the same ratio the advanced user has come to expect when shooting with a DSLR camera. If the photographer wants to switch to a 4:3 ratio, it can be done without impacting the field of view.

The new PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera uses 31 Auto Focus (AF) points, compared to the PowerShot G1 X camera that uses nine AF points, resulting in improved autofocus capabilities allowing the user to easily compose the image and focus on a specific subject in the frame. Utilizing the bright, capacitive touch, three-inch tilt LCD on the PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera helps provide flexibility in shooting by tilting 180 degrees up and 45 degrees down.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera is also compatible with Canon's new optional electronic viewfinder that mounts to the hot shoe. A new optional grip* will also be available for the PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera. These accessories are ideal for photographers looking for the feel of a DSLR camera with the portability of a point-and-shoot camera.

PowerShot G1 X Mark II with Electronic Viewfinder

Seamless Connectivity
The PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera is equipped with built-in Wi-Fi technology, so users can share still images and videos online quickly and easily using compatible mobile devices.1 Using the Mobile Device Connect button, users can connect to a smartphone, a tablet or a Wi-Fi enabled computer. Connection to the computer is easily done using Canon iMAGE GATEWAY 2 through the cloud. For even easier connectivity, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera introduces Near Field Communication (NFC)** - a first for Canon's G-series cameras - so transferring photos to a compatible Android device can be simple and intuitive. This digital camera's new remote shooting feature also allows the user to sync the G1 X Mark II with a smartphone or tablet and utilize the shutter, optical zoom and self-timer features from that device.

Extensive Shooting Modes
Ideal for portrait photography, the camera's Background Defocus mode softens the background behind a subject to help users create professional-looking portraits. In addition, simply pressing the camera's dedicated movie button allows photographers to capture 1080p Full HD video with ease. And, as commonly found in most DSLR cameras, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera has a full range of shooting and recording modes, including 14-bit RAW + JPEG, for outstanding creative control.

Unique to Canon PowerShot Digital Cameras, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II camera features Advanced Star Mode with four options to capture images of starry night skies with impeccable quality. The "Star Portrait" and "Star Nightscape" modes help capture the radiance of stars while still allowing you to capture the subject. The "Star Trails" mode captures video trails of stars to turn trails into a luminous still image, while the "Star Time Lapse Movie" mode will shoot images of star movement and then combine the images to make a film that shows the movement of the stars, creating a truly stunning video.

Availability
The PowerShot G1 X Mark II digital camera will be available starting in April for a retail price of $799.99.

From Canon USA:

The PowerShot N100 Features an Innovative and New Dual Capture Mode and Story Highlights Mode

MELVILLE, N.Y., January 6, 2014 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the addition of a new concept camera to its PowerShot lineup: the PowerShot N100 digital camera. Featuring a new body style and unique, new creative options, the PowerShot N100 camera helps users create and tell their visual stories by allowing the photographer to become part of the image being captured. With the innovative and new Dual Capture mode, users can simultaneously capture special moments using the Main Camera, while the Story Camera, a rear facing sub-camera, will embed a picture of them onto the main image.

To help people create unique images that tell a story, the PowerShot N100 camera offers the new Story Highlights mode. Story Highlights mode intuitively creates a highlight reel of images and video* to create a customized movie that tells a story as seen through the photographer’s eyes – all done within the camera. No longer will a photographer need to use additional software to assemble this footage.

“Canon is continually working to discover new ways for end-users to combine high-image quality and creativity in a technologically advanced compact camera,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The new PowerShot N100 is a unique digital camera designed to not only create high-quality images and video, but also capture the feelings of the photographer at the moment they take a picture.”

Become Part of the Story
Remembering a child’s first birthday and the parents’ excitement during that memorable moment can now be captured with the innovative Dual Capture mode featured in the PowerShot N100 digital camera. Easy to access and use, Dual Capture mode creates a picture-in-picture effect by simultaneously capturing the subject in the framed shot while the Story Camera, a rear-facing sub-camera, takes an image or video of the photographer as they take the picture. The PowerShot N100 camera then combines both shots into one distinctive photo or video combination. The images captured using the Story Camera can be placed in four different locations on the main image and in three different sizes at the photographer’s discretion.

Capture Your Story
To help create even more share-worthy memories, the PowerShot N100 digital camera features an artistic mode to help users creatively capture images and movies. Story Highlights mode works within the camera to create a highlight reel of selected images or movie digest clips creating a unique imaging experience. The images can be selected automatically based on events, the date they were taken, by people utilizing Face ID, or the selection can be customized based on photos hand-picked by the user. As a result, the moments that are most precious to the user are intuitively combined, allowing for complete highlights of the images taken from a friend’s wedding day or a child’s first ride on a new bicycle. The final created movie will last approximately two minutes from the automatically selected pictures and videos, or if the files were selected by the photographer, it will last a maximum of five minutes.

Share Your Story
With enhanced Wi-Fi capabilities, the creative images taken with the PowerShot N100 camera can be shared with friends and family even while on-the-go. Using the Mobile Device Connect Button, users can connect to a compatible smartphone, a compatible tablet or a computer. Connection to the computer is easily done using Canon’s Image Sync1 through the cloud. For the first time in Canon’s line up, the PowerShot N100 camera has the convenient connectivity of Near Field Communication (NFCTM) offered on AndroidTM devices. After an initial one-time set up, with NFC, users simply press the Mobile Device Connect Button and tap their NFC enabled Android2 device to the PowerShot N100 camera which automatically launches the Canon Camera Window App3 so users can share images from the camera to the phone with ease.

Enhance Your Images
The Creative Shot mode on the PowerShot N100 camera includes four new filter categories to bring an enhanced artistic touch to photos. The filter categories are: Retro, Monochrome, Special and Natural. In Creative Shot mode, users compose their image and let the PowerShot N100 camera analyze the photo to apply one of a series of artistic elements of varying composition, lighting and color. After an image is captured, Creative Shot mode will automatically render five different variations of the shot to deliver unique, new perspectives while still retaining the original image. There are also 46 new filter types, including HDR effects, to help artistic expression reach new creative levels.

In addition to the creative imaging functions, the PowerShot N100 camera offers a 5x optical zoom, a 24mm Wide-Angle f/1.8 lens, a 12.1-Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 6 image processor to help provide stunning image quality. Users also have the ability to quickly access and then record high-quality 1080p Full HD video with the dedicated movie button. To make choosing the ideal setting for each shot convenient, the camera’s Intelligent IS System allows the PowerShot N100 camera to automatically select the optimal image stabilization settings according to the shooting conditions, so shooting in dimly lit or bright situations can be easy and accurate.

The PowerShot N100’s new body design gives the camera a portable shape. The three-inch capacitive touch, tilt LCD panel allows users to capture images at unique angles, up to 90 degrees.

Pricing and Availability
The PowerShot N100 digital camera is expected to be available in May 2014 in white or black for an estimated retail price of $349.99.

Canon has just announed a new firmware update for the Canon EOS-1D X and 1D C DSLR cameras. The 1D X will finally get a feature Bryan and I have been requesting for ages - exposure compensation with Auto ISO (in manual mode) - along with several other AF enhancements.

I recently asked Chuck Westfall, Technical Advisor for Canon, "As the 1D X and 5D III autofocus systems are so similar, does Canon plan on implementing these new AF features in the 5D III as well?" Chuck's response was as diplomatic as it was inconclusive - "Canon Japan hasn't made a decision on that yet."

I guess we'll just have to wait and see. If nothing else, I'd love to get Exposure Compensation with Auto ISO on my 5D III. [Sean]

Canon Firmware Upgrades for the EOS-1D X and EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cameras Deliver Improved Creative Control and Convenience

Firmware Version 2 for the EOS-1D X is Based on Extensive User Input and Provides More Efficient Autofocus Performance in Low Light, Custom Controls, and Improved User-Programmed Functionality

MELVILLE, N.Y., October 22, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announces improvements in the functionality and convenient operation of the EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera and the EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cinema camera through new firmware scheduled to be available starting in January 2014 and November 2013, respectively. Firmware enhancements for the EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera are designed to provide photographers with greater creative freedom and speed, especially in sectors such as sports, wedding, nature/wildlife, and journalism, which often contain rapidly changing action, sometimes in low-light environments. Service enhancements for the EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cinema camera improve lens performance, lens status display, metadata storage, and audio recording.

“Canon constantly strives to provide our customers with advanced and innovative technology in our products,” noted Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “We understand the daily life of photographers, we listen closely to what they have to say, and we use their feedback in our constant efforts to improve existing products and develop new ones. The latest Canon firmware for the flagship EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera provides better automation to help photographers fine-tune how the camera operates moment-by-moment so users can concentrate on creativity and success. Filmmakers have also requested improved functionality for the EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cinema camera, and its new update delivers.”

Improved Operability for the EOS-1D X
Developed as the ultimate Canon EOS camera, the EOS-1D X Digital SLR is designed with foresight that enables its performance to be periodically improved with new firmware upgrades, helping to ensure maximum long-term value for owners and users of the camera. These improvements are engineered to support and advance the evolving creative needs and business imperatives of professional photographers and committed high-end amateurs. The features provided by firmware version 2 are designed for more efficient automation that takes the task of changing settings away from the “heat of the moment” and enables photographers to concentrate on creativity and obtaining valuable shots. Firmware version 2 upgrades and operability additions include a total of 10 features that are now new or improved:

  • AF Performance with Moving Subjects – For greater creative control, additional parameters have been added to AI Servo 2nd Image Priority, enabling users to adjust these settings for more accurate AF performance according to the situation at hand. Photographers can fine-tune the balance between prioritizing focus versus the framing rate for the second and subsequent shots in a burst.
  • Enhanced AI Servo AF Performance in Low Light Conditions – The AI Servo focusing algorithm has been improved to allow more time for light sampling during AF activation prior to shutter release, enhancing AF performance in low-light situations. Additionally, initial AF control is now based on the new “+2 focus priority” setting of AI Servo 2nd Image Priority, which has higher distance measurement capabilities under low-light conditions. Upon full depression of the shutter button, settings from AI Servo 1st Image Priority take over and then settings from AI Servo 2nd Image Priority are applied on any subsequent images in the burst. This increases the probability that the first image in a burst sequence will be as sharp as possible.
  • Improved Acceleration/Deceleration Tracking Parameters – To improve tracking performance of fast-moving subjects that fill the frame, additional parameters for acceleration/deceleration tracking in AI Servo AF have been added to provide photographers with more precise control when photographing rapidly moving subjects that accelerate or decelerate quickly or unexpectedly. In response to feedback from professional photographers, these new settings have been added to handle larger differences in speed (i.e., the rate of change in image magnification) compared to the previous firmware.
  • Selection of Initial AF Point While Shooting in 61-Point Auto Selection AF – This new option in the AF Menu provides more continuity when switching to 61-Point Auto Selection AF from any other AF Point Selection mode. The option maintains the AF point selected from the previous Selection mode as a starting point for 61-Point Auto Selection AF. It also maintains the ability to change to a pre-programmed AF point when changing the Selection mode. This time-saving option is designed to help eliminate the need to stop and think, and helps photographers to customize their individual shooting style.
  • AF Point Switching According to Camera Orientation – In addition to programming the EOS-1D X camera to automatically switch to a different AF point and area selection mode based on camera orientation, firmware version 2 adds the option of programming only the AF point according to camera orientation (horizontal, grip up and grip down). This new ability to select up to three different AF points according to camera orientation allows for greater customization of the camera to specific shooting styles.
  • Expanded Minimum Shutter Speed in Auto ISO – In response to user feedback, this improved functionality in Auto ISO enables photographers to select a minimum shutter speed as high as 1/8000th of a second to freeze moving subjects.
  • Exposure Compensation in Auto ISO with Manual Mode Set – This new function enables photographers to manually set a desired shutter speed and aperture, use Auto ISO to control the exposure, and use Exposure Compensation to adjust the exposure for challenging lighting conditions (e.g., a very dark or very bright background). This new function can be activated through the Quick Control Dial or by using the Main Dial while pressing the SET button.
  • Toggling Between Alternate Camera Settings – EOS-1D X camera users can now toggle between three groups of camera settings instantly by pressing the shutter button, AE Lock button [*] or the AF-ON button. Selectable settings that can now be assigned to the AE Lock and AF-ON buttons via Custom Controls include:
  • Currently selected AF point vs. pre-registered AF point
  • AI Servo AF configuration sets (Case 1 through Case 6)
  • One-Shot AF vs. AI Servo AF
  • Currently selected drive mode vs. 14 fps Super High Speed drive mode

With these new options, photographers can reconfigure their EOS-1D X camera on the fly, while keeping their eye on the viewfinder to maintain concentration on the shot they are trying to get. For example, the camera could be set up for One-Shot AF and single shot drive mode on the shutter button, AI Servo AF in Case 1 with high-speed continuous drive mode on the AE Lock button, and AI Servo AF in Case 4 with super-high-speed 14 fps continuous drive mode on the AF-ON button.

  • Same Exposure for New Aperture in Manual Mode – This new firmware feature provides users with the ability to maintain consistent exposure levels in Manual mode when the aperture changes, for example when a photographer shoots at maximum aperture with a variable-aperture lens (such as the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM telephoto zoom) or when using a lens equipped with built-in extender (such as the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X). The feature gives users the option to have the camera adjust the shutter speed or the ISO to compensate for the aperture change.
  • Display Protected Images Only – Users can now page through protected images only via an option on the main dial. This feature already exists with rated images, and is an expansion of that capability.

Enhancements for the EOS-1D C
A versatile, self-contained 4K cinema camera as well as a robust still photography camera, the Canon EOS-1D C will also benefit from a new service update that further enhances the performance of this unique imaging device.

  • EF Lens Communication – The new service update for the EOS-1D C Digital SLR Cinema camera will enable Canon EF-mount Cinema lenses to store lens metadata in the video recorded by the camera. Furthermore, Canon EF-mount Cinema lenses will be supported by Peripheral Illumination and Chromatic Aberration Correction functions, helping to improve overall image quality.
  • Audio Recording – In response to user requests, audio on the EOS-1D C camera has also been enhanced. Currently audio recording is limited to a MIC input, but the forthcoming service update will permit selection of LINE or MIC input, allowing use of a wider variety of external audio sources.

New Firmware Release Schedules and Installation Procedures

From Canon:

MELVILLE, N.Y., September 4, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is set to expand its imagePROGRAF large format S-Series printers, adding the 44-inch iPF8400S and 24-inch iPF6400S printers, which will offer enhanced print management and color control capabilities, versus the previous models. The new printers are designed to aid graphic arts providers in maximizing productivity while printing their jobs, helping to ensure output is consistent and accurate. In addition, the new imagePROGRAF models boast features with the ability to help ensure color consistency of an entire fleet of iPFX400 series printers across multiple office locations and environments. With the ability to execute high-volume, reliable output, it is well-suited for print service providers and in-plant operations that receive frequent, large-quantity requests from clients with high-standards for color consistency.

"The color calibration capabilities of our newest imagePROGRAF models arm providers with an advantage in today's highly competitive production printing market," said Sam Yoshida, vice president and general manager, Marketing, Business Imaging Solutions Group, Canon U.S.A. "These machines are designed to excel in demanding industry segments, and we are confident that our customers will be impressed with their efficient, accurate and consistent management of high-volume print jobs enabled by the calibration capabilities and print management features included in these models."

Color Management and Control
Maintaining consistent, reliable output is an important control requirement of industry service providers. The 44-inch iPF8400S and 24-inch iPF6400S printers feature an enhanced color calibration system that can help ensure consistency while offering flexibility.

  • Multi-Sensor: The iPFX400S printers are equipped with an upgraded multi-sensor versus the prior model, using a three-color LED and recently developed condenser lens to help improve recalibration and maintain an average printer-to-printer color difference of ?E00 = 2.0. In addition, this process can be performed using lightweight paper, reducing the amount of ink used and time needed for drying versus the prior models.
  • SU-21 Spectrophotometer: An option for the 24-inch iPF6400S printer, the spectrophotometer can be used to drive the calibration of an entire network of iPFX400S printers, helping significantly reduce the amount of time spent configuring a fleet and helping maximize the productivity of each device. Since only one spectrophotometer is needed, this is also an efficient and cost-effective approach to managing color.

Fleet-Wide Printer Management
As industry providers increase in size and capabilities, so does the demand for streamlined administration of print fleets both large and small. The Canon iPFX400S printer lineup is designed to meet these needs with a set of features, including the Color Calibration Management Console (CCMC), remote functionality and scheduled color check features, that once networked help improve access and general operation of an iPFX400S printer fleet versus the prior models, whether printers are in close proximity, reside in nearby rooms or even exist in separate buildings.

  • Color Calibration Management Console (CCMC): This software application provides system-wide color management control, from a single PC, helping streamline the distribution of color measurement data across a fleet of iPFX400S printers.
  • Remote Functionality: Administrators are notified in real-time when tasks are finished or if an error occurs.
  • Scheduled Color Check: Users can save time and expedite printing processes as this feature can automatically perform regular color checks on dates and times scheduled by the user.

Enhanced Productivity Features
With intuitive software programs and the CCMC, the new devices can help streamline print jobs and ensure resources are used efficiently. These features further expand the capabilities of each printer and can help providers manage a diverse range of client requests, including the ability to print from one machine or a fleet of printers.

  • High-Capacity Ink System: The iPF6400S printer now has the ability to use 300ml ink tanks, while the iPF8400S can accommodate 330ml and 700ml ink tanks. In addition, Canon's unique sub-ink tank system in both models allows ink to be replaced while prints are in-progress helping ensure jobs can be completed virtually seamlessly.
  • Efficient Printing Capabilities: Each of the new imagePROGRAF printers also features a unique print-head configuration that enables high-quality printing with fewer total passes from its previous model. With a built-in 250GB hard drive, data can be stored and retrieved directly from the printer so frequently placed jobs can be completed without needing to resend documents.
  • Included Software Solutions: Canon's new imagePROGRAF S-Series printers are equipped with tools that help foster productivity, monitor costs and expand the range of output options. For example, the Accounting Manager Feature tracks customer consumable costs, while a variety of plug-ins support different data files and output. With the Direct Print & Share cloud-based portal solution*, file-sharing is enhanced so printing and processing documents is easier and more streamlined than with prior models.

Device Details & Availability
Canon's new imagePROGRAF iPFX400S models - the iPF8400S and iPF6400S printers - are expected to be available in mid-September 2013 through Authorized Canon Dealers and Premier Partner Resellers and will have a manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) of $4,995 and $2,995 respectively.

Based on input from the motion picture and television production communities, these updates are designed to extend image capture capabilities, increase operational convenience, enhance the versatility of recorded files, and facilitate postproduction workflow efficiencies, particularly with regard to maintaining accurate industry-standard color values.

"Canon is committed to supporting the motion picture and television production communities to the fullest extent possible," stated Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. "Canon listens closely to comments from the production industry. These new Canon firmware updates for Cinema EOS cameras and XF300-series camcorders are designed to enhance the ability of filmmakers and professional content creators to meet their technical and creative needs, and help them tell their stories as they envisioned them."

Among the updates for the Canon Cinema EOS C500 Cinema Camera are: an ACESproxy (Academy Color Encoding System) output from the camera's 3G-SDI monitor terminal for immediate on-set color correction (using a compatible ACES monitor with ASC CDL [The American Society of Cinematographers Color Decision List]) while primary footage is being recorded in RAW; support for the DCI-P3+ color gamut (a selectable function providing a wider range of color than DCI-P3); Canon proprietary Cinema Gamut for an even greater color gamut than industry standards ITU-R BT.709 (Rec. 709) and DCI-P3; and greater still than DCI-P3+. The firmware also includes an increase in ISO of up to 80,000 for capturing usable footage in darker conditions (including moonlight). The ISO increase also applies to the Canon EOS C300 Cinema Camera and the Canon EOS C100 Digital Video Camera, both of which also share additional firmware enhancements with the EOS C500 Cinema Camera, including a Peripheral Lens Correction feature to maintain even illumination from corner to corner of the image when using select EF lenses. A full list of all firmware updates for each EOS camera appears below.

Canon EOS C500 Firmware Updates

  • ACESproxy output from the camera's 3G-SDI monitor terminal - Allows filmmakers to grade their footage (which is being recorded in RAW) immediately on-set using a compatible ACES monitor with ASC CDL. This provides an accurate representation of how the footage will look after being color graded in the DI suite when a project uses ACES.
  • Support for DCI-P3+ color gamut (Cinema Raw Development) - DCI-P3 is the standard color gamut for digital movie projection. DCI-P3+ is an expanded gamut. This color space shares the same white point as DCI-P3, but encompasses a much greater range of color. By exceeding the DCI-P3 standard, the Canon EOS C500 camera offers filmmakers, in particular the cinematographer, an increase in saturated colors which can be faithfully reproduced, as well as a more accurate representation of the original subject color.
  • Canon Proprietary Cinema Gamut - Cinema Gamut is the widest color space currently available for the EOS C500 Cinema Camera. Canon's Cinema Gamut is wider than both Rec. 709 and DCI-P3+, allowing end users to faithfully record highly saturated color while retaining fine variations of both hue and saturation.
  • Canon Log LUT (look-up-table) available over the 3G-SDI monitor terminal - When the camera is recording in Canon Log format, the image that is simultaneously outputted over the 3G-SDI terminal to an external monitor can be viewed in its original color space without the apparent lack of contrast and color saturation, resultant of the Log format.
  • 4096 x 1080 RAW resolution - In this new shooting mode, in full RAW recording, the vertically cropped center of the EOS C500 camera's Super 35mm CMOS sensor can now record in 4096 x 1080 native resolution, up to 120fps.

Canon EOS C500, C300 and C100 Camera Firmware Updates

  • Peripheral lens correction feature - This maintains even illumination from corner to corner of the image and virtually eliminates vignetting across the image. There are 14 Canon EF-Series photographic lenses that benefit from this feature including the EF300mm f/2.8L IS II USM, EF400mm f/2.8L IS II USM, the EF500mm and EF600mm f/4L IS II USM. The seven Canon CN-E Series Cinema Lensesi that benefit from this feature include the CN-E15.5-47mm and CN-E30-105mm T2.8L S compact Cinema zooms, the CN-E14mm T3.1L F, the CN-E24mm T1.5L F, the CN-E 50mm T1.3L F, the CN-E85mm T1.3L F, and the CN-E135mm T2.2L F Cinema prime lenses.
  • ISO increased up to 80,000 - This provides the EOS C500, EOS C300 and EOS C100 cameras with greater light sensitivity than ever before. Great for documentaries and other forms of reality production, this ISO increase can help capture shots that may have been previously impossible to capture.
  • Ability to shift the magnification location in the viewfinder - Allows users to manually move the magnification view area to one of 25 different locations using the joystick on the camera. With this feature, the camera operator can easily check focus even on subjects that are not located directly in the center of the frame.
  • Record button lock - The lock setting on the Key Lock now makes it possible to lock all operations, including the RECORD button, to prevent accidental operation during takes.

Canon EOS C500 and C300 Camera Firmware Updates

  • Multi-person log-in for the Canon Wi-Fi® remote application - This allows two users to log-in to a single camera, allowing for camera operation/control with one log-in and metadata to be inputted by the second log-in simultaneously. This is essential when time is critical and production tasks need to be completed immediately.
  • Ability to assign ISO and iris adjustments to the control dial (or, on the EOS C300 camera, the dial on the removable side grip handle) - This gives operators the option to allocate whichever setting they prefer to either dial, allowing for specific changes at a moment's notice.

Canon EOS C300 Camera; XF305 & X300 Camcorder Firmware Updates

  • GPS Support - Provides accurate metadata on the location and time of each clip, including longitude, latitude, and altitude for the EOS C300 camera when used with Canon's optional GP-E1 or GPS Receiver and for the XF305 and XF300 camcorders when used with Canon's optional GP-E2 GPS Receiver. This is an especially handy feature for documentaries, ENG (Electronic News Gathering) and reality programming.

Canon EOS C300 Firmware Updates

  • Wide DR gamma - With a high dynamic range that maintains highlight detail and preserves perfect gradations of color, this feature is designed to help achieve perfect color without adjustment. Optimized for display monitors, wide DR gamma is well-suited for productions that do not allow for lengthy postproduction processing and color grading, such as budget-conscious indie films, web series, or documentaries.
  • 1440 x 1080 35Mbps for broadcast requirements - This highly utilized recording mode (at 60i or 50i) is designed to enable the EOS C300 camera to seamlessly align with the standard workflows used by many major broadcast news networks.
  • Push auto iris/one-shot AF - These new additions make the EOS C300 camera increasingly attractive for solo, run-and-gun style cinéma vérité shooting. These features (which are already included in the EOS C100 camera), automatically adjust the exposure and/or focus to the most suitable setting at the push of a button. They also provide support for the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom lens. The new peripheral lens correction feature further benefits the use of this lens by virtually eliminating vignetting and maintaining even illumination across the image.
  • Automatic Exposure (AE) Shift/ Selecting the Metering Mode/ Flicker Reduction - AE Shift can be used to compensate the automatic exposure set by the camera when using the push auto iris function. Users can engage AE Shift in the camera menu to make slight adjustments to the image brightness helping compensate for scenes that are slightly over or underexposed. The new AE Shift capability provides 15 steps, from -2 to +2. The new firmware also enables three light metering mode options to be selected: Standard, Backlight or Spotlight. By selecting a light-metering mode to match one of three recording conditions, users will help ensure the EOS C300 camera obtains a suitable exposure level when the push auto iris function is used. When recording under artificial light, the camera's monitor may flicker depending on the shutter speed. By setting Flicker Reduction to "Automatic" the EOS C300 camera will automatically detect and reduce flicker on the camera's monitor.

Canon EOS C100 Camera Firmware Update

  • Menu Navigation now possible through buttons on camera body - Previously menu navigation on the EOS C100 camera was only possible through the removable joystick - when the joystick was detached, menu navigation ceased. Allowing users to easily navigate menu options, even with the removable joystick grip detached, buttons on the rear of the camera body will be able to navigate menu options with this new firmware. The buttons on the rear of the camera under the built-in monitor can be assigned as follows: 1) Set, 2) Up, 3) Left, 4) Down, 5) Right.

XF305 and XF300 Camcorder Firmware Update

  • Digital Tele-Converter - This update extends the choice of magnification settings with two great options from the current 1.5X to 3X and 6X.

All products in the Canon Cinema EOS line are engineered to provide outstanding image creation capabilities for professionals in the motion picture, television and diverse high-resolution digital production industries. From Canon:

Designed for Film-Style Operation, the Canon Cinema Prime Lenses Deliver Exceptional 4K / 2K / HD Imaging Performance and a Broad Range of Focal Lengths

MELVILLE, N.Y., September 4, 2013 - Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, has announced today the new CN-E35mm T1.5 L F single-focal-length Cinema prime lens designed for large-format single-sensor digital cinematography cameras employing Super 35mm or full-frame 35mm imagers. Delivering outstanding optical performance in contemporary 4K / 2K / HD motion imaging, the new Canon CN-E35mm T1.5 L F prime lens is the sixth member of Canon's line of compact, precision-matched EF-mount Cinema prime lenses, which also includes 14mm, 24mm, 50mm, 85mm and 135mm EF-mount models.

Collectively, Canon's Cinema prime lens family delivers a wide range of the most important choices in focal lengths to address a myriad of creative digital cinematography choices. All six Canon Cinema prime lenses provide a full-frame 36mm x 24mm image circle for full compatibility with the Canon EOS-1D C, EOS C500, EOS C300 Digital Cinema cameras, the EOS 5D Mark III and EOS-1D X DSLR cameras, the EOS C100 Digital Video Camera and EF-mount cameras made by other manufacturers. The lenses also feature consistent color balance, minimal focus breathing, water-resistant rubber gaskets, and an 11-blade aperture diaphragm to help achieve creative depth-of-field manipulation and pleasing "bokeh" effects. The six Canon Cinema prime lenses are also designed to facilitate production with uniform stepless gear-positioning rings for iris and focus, with an identical 300§ smooth rotation angle on the focus ring. These control rings - switchable from feet to metric labeling - maintain just the right amount of resistance with consistent operating torque. Lens barrels are engraved with easy-to-read scale markings, and consistent 114mm front lens diameters can accommodate screw-on filters and other accessories.

"As with all Canon Cinema prime lenses, the new Canon CN-E35mm T1.5 L F lens has been crafted to meet the creative requirements of the most discerning cinematographers, directors and producers," said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. "Filmmakers indicated a need for this lens in our lineup and with its launch, we now offer six cinema prime lenses covering some of the most important focal lengths."

Canon EF Mount Advantages
All Canon Cinema prime lenses feature a genuine Canon EF-mount with electronic contacts that interface with corresponding contacts on Canon cameras for direct communication between each device. This communication allows lens data - including F-numbers - to be displayed in the viewfinder. Both the F-number and the lens model name are also recorded in the camera's video file as metadata. The new upcoming firmware announced today for the Canon Cinema EOS C500, EOS C300 and EOS C100 cameras will provide Canon proprietary features, such as the Peripheral Illumination Correction function, for the CN-E14mm, 24mm, 50mm, 85mm and 135mm lenses and is scheduled to be available by the end of 2013. Such features are scheduled to be available for the new CN-E35mm lens in 2014.
