(New York, New York) February 14, 2020 – ROKINON has announced two new wide angle XEEN CF Professional Cine Lenses for PL, Canon EF and Sony E mount. With this new addition of the 16mm T2.6 and 35mm T1.5 models, the ROKINON XEEN CF lineup has grown to a core set of five primes: 16mm T2.6, 24mm T1.5, 35mm T1.5, 50mm T1.5 and 85mm T1.5.

“CF” stands for both “Carbon Fiber” and “Compact and Flexible”, which reflects the compact size and versatility of the lenses. For example, the ROKINON XEEN CF 16mm weighs just 2.0lbs (0.9kg ) and measures 3.24in (82.3mm) in length while the fast aperture 35mm T1.5 still weighs only 2.4lbs (82.3mm) and measures 3.24in (113.7mm) in length. Along with ROKINON’s other CF lenses, these new lenses offer exceptional compatibility with gimbals, drones, and compact and lightweight cameras. This was accomplished utilizing carbon fiber construction rather than metal for a sturdier, lighter, durable and more future oriented design and appearance.

Carbon fiber is rarely used for precision machinery due its diffculty in molding. Credit must be given to the R&D designers who developed a technique for molding the material into the shape and size suitable for use in precise lens construction. The cost premium of carbon fiber was another challenge that was overcome to allow the CF cine lenses to remain within the reach of both renowned and aspiring cinematographers.

ROKINON’s XEEN CF lenses provide smooth, soft and dreamy bokeh when wide open and become crystal sharp when stopped down. With 8K support and unique X-coating technology, internal light reflections are effectively controlled to create a distinctive look and dramatic effects. And, they are all covered by an industry exclusive three year warranty! "the new XEEN CF lenses show faces in a most beautiful way, with smooth and subtle transitions" Bill Bennett ASC VP

Main Features

  • Fast T1.5 and T2.6 apertures
  • Dual left and right side scales
  • Available in PL, Canon EF and Sony E mount
  • Carbon Fiber enables a lighter and stronger design
  • Eleven blade apertures create smooth circular bokeh
  • Covered by an industry exclusive three year warranty
  • Compatible with large image sensors (43.3mm image circle)
  • Luminous markings allows effortless use in low-light environments
  • Standard 95mm front diameters for easy compatibility with matte boxes
  • XEEN X-Coating controls internal reflection for dramatic images and a distinctive look
  • Uniform focus and aperture ring locations enable quick lens changes when using follow focus devices
  • Uniform 200-degree silky smooth and damped focus throw across all models enables precise focus adjustment

There are not many animals that are pure white but those that are often have beautiful sharp black accents

This was an easy shot for the Canon EOS 5Ds R that, despite 50 MP of resolution, does seems not to seriously challenge the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens. The combination was perfect for Mount Evans.

MELVILLE, NY, February 12, 2020 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced its parent company, Canon Inc. will launch image.canon in early April 20201, a new cloud platform that connects select Canon cameras with compatible PCs, smartphones and external web services. image.canon will enhance post-production workflow and provide a new way to experience the joy of photography.

Serving as a hub for users’ content, image.canon allows the transfer of image files from connected compatible PCs, smartphones and external web services. The service will provide new ways to enjoy photography and will cater to a wide range of photographers seeking to improve their post-production workflows, including professionals who want to enhance their creative process, enthusiasts who want to streamline image editing and entry-level users who want to enjoy casual photography and share their images on social media.

The Functions and Features of image.canon include:

Direct image uploading via Wi-Fi® connectivity

Beginning with the currently-in-development EOS R5, future Canon cameras equipped with an automatic image transfer function will be able to automatically upload still image and video files2 in their original quality directly to image.canon via Wi-Fi connectivity and store them for up to 30 days3—simply by turning on the device. When uploading an original image file, a thumbnail file (up to 2048 pixels) will be automatically generated and stored on image.canon. These thumbnail files can be viewed and used, even after the 30-day initial storage period3.

Long-term storage up to 10 GB

Users who want to save still image and video files in their original quality after the initial 30-day period can migrate the data to a 10 GB long-term storage space3.

SNS connectivity

From the image.canon mobile app, which will be available for free on the App Store® and Google Play®4, users can easily post on select social network sites (SNS) and YouTube as well as share still image and video files.

The image.canon service will also allow the automatic transfer of images to users’ accounts on services such as Google DriveTM. Starting from June, image.canon will expand both of its partnerships with Google to include original quality backup with Google PhotosTM via Google One TM, a membership plan for expanded storage, as well as Adobe® Creative Cloud® (membership plan). In addition to the automatic transfer of images and the ability to edit images in their original quality on partnered services and applications, image.canon will make it easier for users to store and share their images.

Giving photographers the tools they need to keep up in a 5G and artificial intelligent-enabled world, Canon will continue to propose new ways to capture images and enjoy photography by enabling cameras to communicate in both directions, such as remote, real-time editing of photos and videos captured at outdoor events, cloud-based RAW image data editing and capture assistance tailored to users’ preferences.

1 The CANON iMAGE GATEWAY Online Album Service will end operation in mid-March 2020, and image.canon will be a successor to the service. From the beginning of the data migration period until its service starts in early April 2020, users will not be able to access any image or video files or albums uploaded to the CANON iMAGE GATEWAY service.

2 Automatic file transferring, available for cameras equipped with the automatic file transfer function, beginning with the currently-in-development EOS R5, requires users to connect the camera to a Wi-Fi access point that has been registered on the camera in advance. Wi-Fi enabled compatible Canon cameras released before the EOS R5 will support manual file transfer. Manual file transfer will be enabled from the start of the new service in April 2020. Users can access the full list of compatible cameras on the image.canon website.

3 Original image and video files are stored for 30 days from upload. There will be no capacity restrictions for the initial storage, however the long-term storage space will be limited to 10GB per user account. If a user does not access image.canon for one (1) year, all image and video files, including thumbnail files, will be deleted from the service.

The Company will Also Develop Seven RF Lenses and Two RF Lens Extenders in 2020

MELVILLE, NY, February 12, 2020 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced that its parent company, Canon Inc., is developing the highly anticipated Canon EOS R5 full-frame mirrorless camera. The camera will feature a newly designed CMOS sensor and new image processor, along with new state-of-the-art optical technologies the company has been able to cultivate through its long history of groundbreaking camera and digital imaging solutions development. In addition, Canon plans to release seven RF lenses and two RF lens extenders that are currently in development. These new photography tools will help to continue to strengthen the EOS R system and cement the RF mount as an industry leader.

“Today’s announcement comes as a direct result of the tireless effort of Canon engineers who have been tasked with developing the next generation of Canon EOS R camera and RF lenses to help elevate the popular system that was announced in 2018,” said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “In developing the new camera, Canon listened to extensive user-feedback from a variety of photographers. The outcome is a camera and lenses that will delight a variety of shooters and further helps to demonstrate Canon’s commitment to full-frame mirrorless cameras and lenses.”

The EOS R System was initially developed to provide engineers with the ability to design lenses that were thought to be impossible to create previously. The wide lens mount diameter, shorter back focus, and high-speed system for transmitting data between camera and lens have resulted in an imaging system that delivers higher image quality and greater ease-of-use than ever before.

The new full-frame mirrorless camera currently under development will fully leverage the advantages of the EOS R System, helping to produce a camera that features high-speed continuous shooting and 8K video recording. Furthermore, the camera will provide photographers with more efficient workflows thanks to improved transmission functionality, operability and reliability. These enhancements, along with many others, will help to further elevate and solidify the EOS Series concept of “Speed, Comfort and High-Image-Quality.”

Canon’s EOS R5, the first of the next generation of full-frame mirrorless cameras planned for EOS R System, will include a newly developed CMOS sensor. The new sensor will enable enhanced features such as high-speed continuous shooting up to approximately 20 frames-per-second (FPS) when using the silent shutter and up to approximately 12 FPS when using the mechanical shutter – A feature professional sports and wildlife photographers will find to be extremely impactful on their ability to capture fast-moving subjects. From a video perspective, the camera’s 8K video capture capability will prepare videographers for the future of movie-making- capturing 8K footage today allows for even higher-quality 4K productions in addition to the ability to extract high-resolution still images from the video footage. The EOS R5 will be the first Canon camera equipped with IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization) and when used in conjunction with the extremely effective in-lens stabilization (IS), will allow photographers to handhold the camera in light levels not previously imagined. Additionally, the camera will also feature dual-card slots and will support the automatic transfer of image files from the device to the new image.canon cloud platform.

Alongside the EOS R5, Canon is also developing seven RF lenses and two RF lens extenders scheduled for release during 2020, including the RF 100-500mm F4.5-7.1 L IS USM, Extender RF 1.4x and Extender RF 2x.

Decisive Power. Faster Workflow. Absolute Reliability: The New Nikon D6 Gives Professionals the Edge When It Matters Most

The New Nikon D6 Offers the Most Powerful AF System in Nikon’s History, and Continues the Brand Legacy of Professional Cameras That Deliver Connectivity, Dependability and Streamlined Workflow

MELVILLE, NY – Today, Nikon Inc. has unveiled the D6, a new professional-grade DSLR built for those in need of extreme reliability and ultimate performance. The D6 addresses the needs of professionals and press agencies and is faster and more powerful than ever before. Offering the most powerful AF system in Nikon’s history, this flagship DSLR camera delivers crucial improvements to modern workflow while also accelerating file transfer capabilities. Promising unparalleled low-light performance, powerful agility, advanced 4K UHD multimedia capabilities and a mechanical shutter frame rate boosted to a staggering 14fps, the D6 will redefine the way pros work.

“The D6 is purpose-built and inspired by the valuable feedback of professional users,” said Jay Vannatter, Executive Vice President of Nikon Inc. “The world relies on photojournalists and professionals to document every corner of the globe through impactful images; Nikon cameras are trusted to stand up to any job and help photographers capture the shot, time and time again.”

The Most Powerful AF in Nikon’s History: The D6 leaves nothing to chance. To maximize hit rate, it is equipped with a newly developed, densely packed 105-point AF system in which all the focus points utilize cross-type sensors and all points are selectable. Through the new focus point layout and the use of a triple-sensor arrangement for each focus point, the D6 achieves AF coverage that is approximately 1.6x denser than that of the D5. The D6 also sports an expanded focus detection range which increases the detection area for single point AF and dynamic area AF, making it easier to achieve focus on a subject even when slightly outside the focus point.

Improving upon Nikon’s popular Group AF mode, this function has evolved with support for 17 custom arrangements from which users can choose according to the scene or subject movement. The D6 also demonstrates superior low-light AF performance. The center focus point works down to -4.5 EV1 and the others to -4 EV, making autofocus possible even in dark situations or with low-contrast subjects.

Unparalleled Performance: The new EXPEED 6 engine's superior image-processing capabilities combined with the vast amount of information provided by the new dedicated AF engine drives high-level performance in any situation. To help capture the decisive moment consistently, the D6 boasts a 14fps2 mechanical shutter with full AF and AE. The D6 can also shoot completely silent for sensitive situations, capturing full resolution at 10.5 fps. For faster frame rates, the Nikon D6 is able to take 2-megapixel images at approx. 60 fps and 8-megapixel images at 30 fps in Live View mode.

The D6 leverages a 20.8-megapixel FX-Format CMOS sensor, creating images that pop with stunning detail and true colors and exhibit incredible dynamic range. The ISO ranges from 100 to 102,400, which helps to preserve sharpness and subtle details in even the most challenging light. Additionally, ISO is expandable up to 3.2 million, giving photographers the ability to truly conquer the dark.

Concentration on Workflow: Building on Nikon’s history of serving professionals, the D6 is the most customizable Nikon DSLR yet, designed to speed up the workflow of any user during and after capture.

From Adobe:

As fellow photographers and creatives, we care about the impact all Lightroom products have on our customers. We’ve been listening to your feedback and requests and we’re excited to share what’s coming out today and a preview of what we are actively working on for 2020.

For Lightroom Classic, performance, quality, and stability have all been a primary focus for our team. Since October 2018, we’ve released significant performance updates like GPU (graphics processing unit) accelerated editing, faster and more stable tethering, Library improvements, and more. But we’re not done. The team is constantly testing and re-evaluating the speed and quality of new and existing features, and in 2020 we are working to deliver more GPU-enabled functionality to get you to your “done” point smoother and faster.

Image editing, organizing, and workflow efficiency are also important functions to Lightroom Classic that we want to continually improve for both new and long-time customers. Within the last year and a half, we’ve added key updates like the Texture slider, Flat Field Correction, HDR and Panorama Merge, collection color labels, PNG support, AI-empowered features such as Enhance Details and Panorama Fill Edge, and much more.

Adobe is dedicated to developing the best in class tools and experiences to help all photographers find and express their visions. That’s why we’re actively investing in more Develop tools (including AI/ML features), workflow optimization, as well as refining the interface and experience to empower photographers of all levels to achieve desired results faster and easier than ever before. As customers of our own product, we’re personally excited to share these upcoming updates with you in 2020 and the years to come.

Check out the new feature updates and customer requests for Lightroom Classic, as well as bug fixes and feature polishing for Lightroom for Mac, Windows, iOS, iPadOS, Android, and ChromeOS below. Support for new cameras and lenses is also included in the update.

Updates to Lightroom Classic and ACR

Improved raw default settings

Lightroom Classic and Camera Raw

Streamline your edit workflow with more control over the default develop settings of your raw images. Prior to this version, all raw images used Adobe Color as the default upon import and could only be changed if you knew about the hidden shortcut. Now, you can easily configure default develop settings within Preferences -> Presets to use either Camera Settings, Adobe Color, or a preset of your choice. Defaults can be applied universally (Master), or customized by camera model and even by serial number. If no specific default is specified, then the “Master” settings will be used.

Default by camera settings

Lightroom Classic and Camera Raw

Photographers often take advantage of the picture styles or profiles settings within their cameras. When importing into Lightroom Classic with the default set to Adobe Color, the image may look much different from the camera preview and would require time to adjust it back. With the new raw default settings, you can now use Camera Settings as the default to preserve the “as shot” look and reduce your edit time.

PSB file support

Lightroom Classic

Starting today, you can import, catalog, and edit Large Document Format (.psb) files within Lightroom Classic. Many landscape photographers may stitch multi-gigabyte panoramas within Photoshop and export as a PSB file to maintain the highest quality and resolution. Whether to edit or simply catalog your finished panoramas with the rest of your collections, you can now do so with this new release. Like all files within Classic, the maximum dimensions are 65,000 pixels on the long edge or 512 megapixels.

Performance developments

Lightroom Classic and Camera Raw

  • More GPU Accelerated Editing
Expanding on our GPU support, we’ve added full GPU acceleration for Lens Correction and Transform adjustments.
  • eGPU Empowered Enhanced Details
Enhance Details now leverages external GPUs on macOS 10.15 (Catalina) for faster processing.

Secondary display selection

Lightroom Classic

Work the way you want with the ability to choose which monitor to use as your secondary display. For many editors using three or more displays, opening a second window will now automatically appear in the designated monitor that may have better resolution, color calibration, etc. for your workflow needs.

Auto-Sync improvements

Lightroom Classic

Easily understand when Auto-Sync is enabled and which batch edits are applied. By adding messages and a more visible button, we hope to prevent unintentional batch edits that may set you back on your work. The notifications can be turned off in Preferences -> Interface.

Photoshop Elements 2020 support

Lightroom Classic

You can now import your Photoshop Elements 2020 catalog into Lightroom Classic.

FAQ link for sync

Lightroom Classic

We’ve created a Frequently Asked Questions document for syncing to the cloud from Lightroom Classic to help you understand how sync enables photographers to edit and share photos from the web or any mobile device. You can find the link under the sync status when you click on the nameplate.

Updates to Lightroom for Mac, Windows, Android, iOS, iPadOS, and ChromeOS

Export improvements

Lightroom for Windows and Mac

In addition to exporting in the JPEG or TIFF format, Lightroom on Windows and Mac now also allows you to export in the DNG format. (This feature was already available in Lightroom on Android and iOS.)

Improvements to shared albums

Lightroom for Windows and Mac

When contributing photos to a shared album which is owned by someone else, you can now choose to include or omit metadata. In addition, as the owner of a shared album you can now export photos which other people have contributed to the album.

Improvements to Photo Merge (HDR and Panorama)

Lightroom for Windows and Mac

You can now bypass the Photo Merge dialog when creating an HDR or Panorama and just merge the photos directly using your previous merge settings. To do this, use the following keyboard shortcuts:

HDR: Ctrl + Shift + H
Panorama: Ctrl + Shift + M

Import presets

Lightroom for Android

Previously, you could only import edit presets and profiles in Lightroom on Windows or Mac, and now in this release you can now import edit presets and profiles directly in Lightroom on Android. (This feature will be coming soon to Lightroom on iOS as well.)

Import improvements

Lightroom for Windows and Mac

When importing via drag-and-drop, you can now import to a specific album by dragging and dropping directly onto an album in the Albums list.

Improvements to learn and discover content

Lightroom for iOS and Android

In the Home view, the Discover content is now presented in a two column view for easier browsing. And the interactive tutorials in the Learn section now include a before/after step so that you can really see the effect of the edits in the tutorial.

Split screen

Lightroom for iPadOS

Lightroom on iPad now supports the split screen view.

From Sony:

Sony Electronics Announces New Camera Software Development Kit (SDK) for Third Party Developers and Integrators

New SDK Enables Remote Control of Sony Cameras for a Variety of Professional and Commercial Applications

SAN DIEGO – Feb 11, 2020 – Sony today has announced the release of a new software development kit (SDK) that enables third party developers and integrators to access control of Sony cameras.

Sony, the industry leader in both full-frame and mirrorless cameras, is releasing the SDK based on extensive interest in their camera lineup from commercial customers.

“The customer’s voice is absolutely critical to all aspects of our business,” said Neal Manowitz, Deputy President of Sony Imaging Products and Solutions Americas. “After receiving many requests, we’re excited to finally be able to open our platform in this manner. Companies will now be able to custom develop applications to control our cameras remotely, allowing them to take full advantage of the many innovations in Sony’s lineup including industry-leading autofocus, shooting speeds and much more. Ultimately, this gives professional clients the ability to create new and different imaging experiences unlike anything that’s been done before.”

With the new SDK, key camera controls and still image data captured will be available for remote access, including adjustment of camera settings, shutter release and live view monitoring. These control capabilities are appealing to the workflow of a wide variety of industries including security, entertainment and many others.

One of the companies that have a high expectation of Sony’s SDK is Telemetrics Inc., a company that specializes in robotics and camera control systems, selling complete packages including a weather resistant housing unit on a remotely controlled pan/tilt head compatible with select Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. Telemetrics, Inc. sells to a wide variety of clients including broadcast, production, sports and education companies.

“Combining our expertise in robotics and camera control with the impressive capabilities of Sony’s Alpha camera technology will allow us to create some especially unique solutions for capturing live sports entertainment, which include the newly introduced PT-CP-S5 Compact Pan/Tilt Head and the WP-HOU-A9 Camera Housing unit,” said Michael Cuomo, Vice President of Telemetrics, Inc. “We’ve been thrilled with the results and are extremely excited at the potential for future integration with our systems.”

Initially, the Camera Remote SDK will support Alpha 7R IV and Alpha 9 II bodies, with plans to gradually expand the lineup of supported cameras hereafteri. The Camera Remote SDK is available now and can be downloaded from here.

The current Camera Remote API’s provision will be closed following this new release of the new Camera Remote SDK and its support will be terminatedii.

i The supported Cameras by current Camera Remote API are not included in compatible cameras’ line-up for Camera Remote SDK
