Canon PowerShot G1 X Digital Camera Resolution Results
In addition to the distortion, flare and vignetting results already found on the Canon PowerShot G1 X Digital Camera Review page, resolution results using the ISO 12233 chart are now available. These results need some explanation.

As I have said before, I do not feel that Canon's current version of Digital Photo Pro, version 3.11.31.0, is properly converting the G1 X RAW images when the "Viewing and saving RAW images" preference is set to "High quality". The problem appears identical to the problem we saw with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III when it first hit the streets. Canon fixed the 5D III issue quickly, but ... either disagrees with me that a problem exists - or has chosen to not make the G1 X fix a priority.

The G1 X ISO 12233 results show two samples being tested. In this case, both samples are from the same lens (and camera of course). Sample 1 images were processed at the "High speed" setting while sample 2 images were processed at the "High quality" setting (what I normally use). I feel that the sample 1 results best represent the sharpness of this camera, but have not processed any of my G1 X RAW images with hopes that Canon would give me the sharper results along the better-cleaned-up image quality that I expect "High quality" to deliver - in a DPP update.

Canon DPP 3.11.27.0 Shipping with EOS 5D Mark III
A friend has reported that his just-received Canon EOS 5D Mark III shipped with Canon Digital Photo Professional 3.11.27.0 in the box. Canon Digital Photo Professional 3.11.26.0 is the latest version I can find on Canon USA's website.

Hopefully this release fixes the Canon PowerShot G1 X RAW conversion problem (producing soft images) - and hopefully it becomes available for download very soon.

Canon PowerShot G1 X DPP Problem Not Fixed
The just-released Canon Digital Photo Professional version 3.11.26.0 does not address the Canon PowerShot G1 X RAW softness problem encountered with the DPP "High quality" (default) preference selected for processing.

Very disappointing. Here is the difference:

Canon PowerShot G1 X DPP 'High speed' example

Canon PowerShot G1 X DPP 'High quality' example

The "High speed" example is posted above the "High quality" example. The difference is dramatic.

I have not forgotten about the promised Canon PowerShot G1 X Review. The camera was delivered to me in Key West at the beginning of my recent Florida trip. I used it on the trip and now many of the standard tests are completed for it. These precise tests have taken a huge amount of time due to the point and shoot characteristics of this camera.

Then the 5D III showed up. The Canon EOS 5D Mark III Review of course became my top priority. I hope to finish part two of the 5D III review and, when the proper DPP fix is in place, will try to complete the G1 X review.

Canon DPP Version 3.11.26 in Japanese Available for Download
Canon Inc. has released Digital Photo Professional version 3.11.26 for download. Unfortunately for many of us, it is the Japanese version. Navigate the menu to get to the proper download page - then look for the red arrow button to download the update.

This update should correct the soft conversion problem with Canon EOS 5D Mark III RAW images and hopefully corrects the same problem with Canon PowerShot G1 X RAW images.

I expect the English version to show up very soon.

Canon Japan Announces DPP Update Planned for mid-April
Canon Japan has announced that an update to their Digital Photo Pro (DPP) software is planned for mid-April. This update will resolve the soft/blurred Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR RAW image problem.

Here is my translation of the Google Japanese-to-English translation of this announcement:

To customers using Digital Photo Professional version 3.11.10 with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR camera

April 5, 2012

We thank you very much for your patronage of Canon products.

It has been confirmed that the RAW development process used by Digital Photo Professional version 3.11.10 is not appropriate, generating somewhat blurred images. This is the version of DPP that is included on the CD in the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR box.

<Canon deeply apologizes>

Phenomenon

When Canon EOS 5D Mark III RAW images are processed by DPP version 3.11.10, generated images become somewhat blurred.

Affected Products

Canon Digital Photo Professional RAW Development Software version 3.11.10 included in the Canon EOS 5D Mark III box.

This problem will not be observed in other cameras.

<Actually, the Canon PowerShot G1 X is also affected.>

An update to the Digital Photo Pro software is expected to be published in mid-April.

More on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III and DPP Softness Issue
I've received lots of emails and have had more communication with Canon about the problem with Digital Photo Professional generating soft images from Canon EOS 5D Mark III RAW files.

There are currently two workarounds to this problem.

The first workaround involves changing the DPP "Viewing and saving RAW images" preference (in the "General settings" tab of the "Preferences" menu selection) from "High quality (recommended)" to "High speed". In High Speed mode, the noise reduction palette cannot be used and moiré correction is not performed, but 5D III images are rendered sharp. DPP's Quick Viewer (which displays 5D III images properly) displays images at high speed, so that this solution works is not surprising.

The second solution is to use a third party RAW converter - namely Adobe Camera Raw 6.7 RC. You can use ACR 6.7 RC to output DNG files for use in Lightroom 4 - which will not support the 5D III natively until a point release.

I do not plan to update the color block noise comparison on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Review page until Canon corrects the problem because I can see a difference between High Speed and High Quality in my 5D II images. You can too - look for the false color in the "5D II Quick View" example that is not present in the "5D II Edit Window" example currently on the 5D III review page.

My case with Canon remains open and has been escalated. I'll let you know when I learn anything new about the 5D III DPP softness problem. Thanks to everyone that contributed to this post.

Canon EOS 5D Mark III Noise Comparisons - And a Problem
I've been pouring many hours into adding a set of noise comparisons to the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Review page, but the road has been a rough one.

My first take is that the Canon EOS 5D Mark III is an awesome camera, but Canon's Digital Photo Pro software has made the road to showing you this a difficult one. Let me explain this further on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Review page itself.

Canon Digital Photo Professional 3.10.1 Now Available
Canon Digital Photo Professional 3.10.1 Updater is now available for download.

Changes for Digital Photo Professional 3.10.1 Updater

1. Support added for images taken with the EOS Kiss X50 / EOS REBEL T3 / EOS 1100D, EOS Kiss X5 / EOS REBEL T3i / EOS 600D.If using an earlier version, images take with the EOS Kiss X50 / EOS REBEL T3 / EOS 1100D, EOS Kiss X5 / EOS REBEL T3i / EOS 600D will not be supported. Please update to version 3.10 or later.

2. Additional lenses now covered by correction of lens aberration. Including overseas models, images taken with the following six lenses are now covered by lens aberration correction.

EF 8-15mm F4L USM Fisheye, EF 15mm F2.8 Fisheye, EF 300mm F2.8 II IS USM, EF 400mm F2.8 II IS USM, EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 III (an overseas model), EF-S 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 IS II

Distortion aberration correction for images taken with fisheye lenses (EF 8-15mm F4L USM Fisheye, EF 15mm F2.8 Fisheye) enables the user to select four types of effects that are not covered by ordinary distortion correction. Note that depending on the camera used, there are cases where images taken with applicable lenses may not be covered by aberration correction.

3. Added a function for circular masking. The new Circle option can be selected from the Ratio pull-down menu for the Trimming/angle adjustment tool. The behavior differs from when rectangles like 1:1 are selected in that selecting Circle will masking everything outside of the selected area.

4. When performing Noise Reduction processing, there were cases where the screen would momentarily turn magenta.

5. Fixed a malfunction involving PCs on which multiple versions of Photoshop are installed; there were cases where the Transfer to Photoshop command would be dimmed.

6. Fixed a malfunction in which attempting to display NR Preview while the highlight warning was displayed would cause the Preview screen to turn deep blue.

7. Fixed a malfunction that occurred if an image was overwritten by a newer version after a rating had been set; there were cases where the editing results were destroyed and the image reverted back to the settings when it was first taken.

8. Fixed a malfunction wherein white lines would appear in the displayed results if an image was displayed at 100% in the Edit Window or the Edit Image Window and the window was then scrolled.

9. Windows XP SP2 is no longer supported

If using this software in a Windows XP environment, please update Windows to Service Pack 3 before installing the software.

10. The limitation in Mac OS 10.6 of not being able to drag images to another folder from within the main window has been removed.

11. Mac OS 10.4 is no longer supported

The versions of Mac OS X that are supported by this software are Mac OS 10.5 and Mac OS 10.6 (only models that came with either Mac OS 10.5 or Mac OS 10.6 preinstalled). Also, this software does not support Power PC Macs.
