The Cracked Eggs (or Alien Egg Hatchery) rock formations about 2 miles into Bisti Badlands, De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area are an intriguing subject.

This scene called for the classic use of a wide-angle focal length. Move in close to render the foremost egg large while keeping nearly the entire hatchery and a significant amount of interesting background in the frame. This lens can go significantly wider, but 22mm seemed the right choice for the background details inclusion.

Selecting the camera height is typically a necessary consideration for landscape photography. In this case, a high position provided separation of the foreground cracked egg and the one behind it. This position also showed the number of cracked eggs vs. having foreground eggs obscuring them.

Scouting showed that this scene would look great at sunset, and that timing was the photographic plan implemented. As is often the case, the light was best immediately before the scene went into shadows, the optimal (warmest) light only lasted for a few minutes, and the images shot before the best light are seldom seen by anyone else.

Immediately before the eggs went into shadows, I flipped the camera to vertical orientation (Cracked Eggs at Sunset) (an L-bracket makes this change fast and holds the same alignment) to capture a variation. When the eggs went into shadows (Cracked Eggs in Sunset Shade, they were evenly illuminated, and the glowing canyon walls in the background remained attractive.

From Sony Electronics:

Sony Electronics Launches New Xperia® 1 V Smartphone

A newly developed image sensor and Alpha™ series technology enables you to create impressive portraits with accurate color, day and night.

SAN DIEGO, CA – May 10, 2023 – Sony Electronics Inc. introduces the Xperia 1 V, its’ first flagship smartphone equipped with a newly developed stacked CMOS image sensor with 2-layer Transistor Pixel. The Xperia 1 V is packed with Sony’s cutting-edge technology, meeting the high-level needs of creators, while at the same time, supporting future creators who want to shoot or deliver their content with pride.

“We continue to prioritize the needs of our customers and the new Xperia 1 V allows for the next level of content creation, viewing experience, gaming performance, battery life and audio capabilities,” says Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “The opportunities and needs for smartphones are increasing and with the Xperia 1 V the possibilities for both photo and video creation is truly endless.”

Elevating Content Capture

The Xperia 1 V is raising the bar with its’ newly developed image sensor which depicts rich colors and textures of people, landscapes, and scenes in even dark locations. Due to the combination of the low-light performance, which is approximately double compared to the previous modelii and the high-speed multi frame overlay procession technology of the Xperia 1 V, it is possible to shoot a noise resistant photo with a wider dynamic range that is equivalent to a full-frame camera. The 24mm lens on the back of the Xperia 1 V equipped with a 2-layer Transistor Pixel stacked CMOS image sensor “Exmor T for mobile” which is about 1.7 times larger than the Xperia 1 IV’s image sensor. In addition, the 85-125mm (F2.3-F2.8) optical zoom lens enables bright portraits with little distortion.

S-Cinetone, designed for cinematographersiii, has been adjusted and installed for mobile. Since the texture of the human skin can be beautifully expressed when shooting, it is possible to record as an impressive cinematic image as it is, without color grading. In addition, the new sensor has approximately three times of saturation signal levelii compared to the conventional sensor, and unique image quality processing suppresses noise that tends to occur in dark scenes, resulting in beautiful images with soft colors.

The Xperia 1 V has a multitude of functions including color presets such as Creative Look, also found in Alpha series cameras, and high-performance real time AF (auto focus). Various color settings are preset, such as colorful flowers and clear blue sky, or creating a soft, transparent finish. Xperia’s high-performance Real-time Eye AFiv and Real-time trackingiv allows shooting with the focus on the eyes of a person or a specified subject. With AI depth that analyzes distance information, even distant subjects can be clearly focused. Additionally, high-speed continuous shooting of up to 30 frames per second with AF/AEv tracking is newly available, so no moment will be missed.

Improved Vlog Experience

Xperia 1 V fits all creators’ needs with the Product Showcase Setting, which is a popular function in Sony’s VLOGCAM series and shifts the focus on the camera to the product, instead of reviewer’s face, when shooting. Additionally, a new voice priority mic is placed near the rear camera. Even when in a busy outdoor location, the creator’s voice is clearly recorded, so it makes an easy transition from shooting to distributing the video. When doing a YouTube™ live stream via the video recording function “Videography Pro”, chats from viewers can be viewed in the comment section simultaneously, allowing for immediate interactionvi with viewers in real time. The user interface also supports vertical shooting, so you can shoot content in any orientation, either vertically or horizontallyvii.

Immersive Experience

Packed into the newest compact smartphone is a 6.5-inch 4K OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hzviii and less blur. The powerful and low-noise speaker amplifier improves the spread and depth of the sound, and the extension of the low and high frequencies, creating a more dynamic and clear sound. Xperia 1 V offers an authentic viewing experience of movies and music without a need for an additional speaker. On the backside, it has a functional tactile design that uses a uniquely developed texture glass. Combined with the fine slits on the side, it provides a stable grip and prevents from slipping when you hold the smartphone during shooting or viewing.

Best in Class Gaming Performance

The game assist function "Game Enhancer" provides visual and auditory support for game players. In addition to simply playing, players can also livestream their playing scene on YouTube. Qualcomm's Snapdragon® 8 Gen2 Mobile Platform and Elite Gamingx optimizes the experience of shooting, viewing and playing games with superior level.

Long Lasting Battery Power and Powerful CPU

Despite using a 4K display, approximately 20 hoursx of continuous video playback is available with a powerful 5,000mAh battery. It supports wireless charging, 30 minutes quick charge up to 50%xi, and furthermore, Xperia’s unique charging optimization technology supports users with a battery that maintains 80% or more of its maximum capacityxii even after 3 years. By improving power consumption and heat dissipation, Xperia 1 V achieves both high performance and durability, and allows for shooting for a longer time while suppressing heat generation. Equipped with the Snapdragon® 8 Gen2 Mobile Platform, the power efficiency of the CPU has been improved by approximately 40%xiii compared to the previous model. The power consumption during camera operation has been improved by approximately 20%, and the volume of the heat diffusion sheet has been increased by approximately 60% for the heat dissipation performance of the main unit. ?

Accessibility & Sustainability

With continued efforts to provide more accessibility, Xperia 1 V includes a function in the Photo Pro feature that uses sounds to inform users of the horizontal and vertical measurement of the screen.

The Sony Group has set an environmental plan "Road to Zero" aiming for zero environmental load by 2050. In order to achieve this, we are taking action while setting medium-term environmental targets in stages. As part of these mid-term environmental goals, we aim to completely eliminate plastic packaging materials for newly designed small products by 2025. Xperia 1 V ‘s plastic-free packagexiv is comprised of Sony’s unique Original Blended Material, which is made from bamboo, sugar cane fibers, and recycled paper collected from the market. We are also working to reduce the amount of virgin plastic used inside the main unit. Some elements, both internal and external, of the main unit use SORPLAS™, a flame-retardant recycled plastic developed by Sony that uses up to 99% recycled materials. For more details, please visit: www.sony.net/xperia-eco

Style Cover with Stand for Xperia 1 V(XQZ-CBDQ

The Xperia 1 V exclusive cover has a grip on the bottom of the main unit to enhance the shooting experience. In addition to the conventional horizontal stand, it supports vertical stand, making it easy to use not only for watching videos but also for live distribution and video chat. The back of the cover incorporates the textured design applied to the back of the "Xperia 1 V" body, so that the original design of the device is not compromised even when the cover is attached. Two colorsxv are available to match the body (black and khaki green).

Pricing and Availability

The Xperia 1 V will be available for pre-order on May 11, 2023 for approximately $1399.99 USD with first customer deliveries July 28, 2023. It will be sold unlocked in black at a variety of Sony’s authorized dealers throughout the United States. A khaki green color variation will be available exclusively at www.electronics.sony.com.

For a limited time, customers who pre-order the Xperia 1 V starting May 11, 2023, will be eligible to receive Sony’s latest LinkBuds Truly Wireless Earbuds (WFL900/H) with purchase (a $179.99 USD value).xvi

The pink Huguenot Church is one of my favorite subjects in Charleston, SC, and this entrance is especially eye-catching.

From a distance, the depth of this doorway is deemphasized, but moving in close with an ultra-wide-angle lens reveals that attribute. This lens's angle of view also permits a foreground fence to be omitted while keeping most of the doorway in the frame.

The RF 16 was not my first choice for street photography while walking around Charleston with the Canon EOS R8 this afternoon. However, this little lens was easy to take along for just-in-case needs, and it proved worth having along.

The Canon RF 16mm F2.8 STM Lens provides outstanding utility (and fun) for its size, weight, and especially, price. As I share this sample image, the RF 16 in refurbished condition is on sale for only $179.00.

On a trip targeting the Bisti / De-Na-Zin Wilderness Area in New Mexico, I ended up in Bears Ears National Monument, Utah.

Why? Two reasons.

First, 3 days of sand and dust storms (even stones were in the air) provided an unfavorable New Mexico greeting. Second, Bears Ears National Monument has some great photo subjects.

This image is of House on Fire in Mule Canyon, Cedar Mesa. Late in the morning, the sun reaches the red rock below this ancient Puebloan granary, creating a warm-toned light that reflects up into the massive rock overhang. That warm light color combines with lines in the rock to create the look of a raging fire over the ancient building.

Photographers chose a wide range of editing choices for this subject, some including red color tone emphasis and wild saturation. The chosen concept is typically to make the flames appear intense, and personal preference or audience preference rules (unless processing for a client).

I opted to process this image using the cloudy white balance setting, cooler than the shade option technically right for the scenario (6500k vs. 7500k), with a bit of vibrance (+30) to bring out the richness in the colors.

House on Fire affords a wide variety of compositions. To fully cover the focal length range potentially desired, I carried two awesome zoom lenses, the Sony FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM Lens and the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II Lens.

Primarily, the 12-24mm lens met the needs, delivering this corner-to-corner sharp image in a single shot.

From Sony Electronics:

Sony Electronics Launches New SDK Version Taking Remote Shooting and Camera Integration to the Next Level

Sony’s new Camera Remote SDK version introduces faster processing speed and enhanced function support as well as extending compatibility to the ZV-E1

SAN DIEGO, CA. April 12, 2023 – Sony Electronics announces the launch of a new version (Version 1.08) of the Camera Remote Software Development Kit (SDK) that enables remote operation and setting changes of Sony cameras. Version 1.08 widens the range of potential applications with new features, as well as expanding the compatible models. Version 1.08 means the SDK can be used with the ZV-E1 full-frame interchangeable lens camera, announced on March 29, 2023.

“With each SDK release, we are integrating learnings from customers and expanding the functionality and magnitude of applications and capabilities,” says Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “The updated SDK allows our cameras to be used in more industrial and B2B applications, ranging from photogrammetry or medical companies, to inspection, and e-Commerce. We are excited for professional clients to have the ability to explore new functionalities.”

Key new features include:

  • Improved processing speed: In repetitive shooting scenarios, the processing speed for setting, shooting, and transferring files is reduced by approximately 20%i, improving workflow efficiency. This will be perfect for e-Commerce applications, where users need to take 360 degree continuous pictures of an object or model for web publishing, with quick turnaround times. Capturing more frames in a shorter time also means that battery life is optimized, which is particularly important for drone applications such as mapping or surveying.
  • Added support for shutter trigger by electrical signal and remote power on/offii. In photogrammetry, photobooths or even road traffic management, an electrical signal improves the accuracy for triggering image capture, opposed to a software-based trigger.
  • New remote settings support: Version 1.08 supports remote menu settings for video, including picture profile settings and timecode (TC)/user bit (UB) settingsiii. This will create an enhanced workflow for video making and widen possibilities for existing photo-based applications.
  • “Overheating warning” status notification: This function allows the camera to notify remote users of any significant increase in temperatureiv. In outdoor applications such as desert roads or systems where the camera is embedded in a wider computer infrastructure with high heat due to processing, users will be able to monitor the cameras more precisely.

With this SDK release, software developers can design bespoke applications tailored to business requirements, integrating Sony’s equipment for size-critical drone and speed camera systems, as well as other medical, education, government, and e-commerce applications. This SDK will continue to be available free of charge. The Camera Remote SDK can be used to control several cameras in the Sony camera range including Cinema Line cameras, with the full list of compatible cameras available here.

From Sony Electronics:

Sony Electronics Announces New Firmware Update for FX3 & FX30

The new firmware enables the cameras to shoot DCI 4K in true 24 fps, adds anamorphic lens desqueeze and breathing compensation to bring unified operability and common workflow to the Cinema Line

SAN DIEGO, CA –Today, Sony Electronics announced new firmware updates for the FX3 full-frame digital cinema camera and the FX30 Super 35 digital cinema camera, enhancing their features for cinematic storytelling and connectivity for film creators. Since its launch, the FX3 has become a popular tool for everyone from high-end feature films, television series and independent filmmakers around the world. Now, after feedback from the community, Sony is pleased to offer new updates to enhance high-end filmmaking. FX3 Version 3.00 and FX30 Version 2.00 include highly requested features such as the ability to shoot DCI 4K in true 24.00p (4096 x 2160)ii with new format XAVC S-I DCI 4K (17:9).

"The FX3 is a great companion to the VENICE in the filmmaking adventure. Its color rendering and accuracy equals its bigger sibling, the VENICE. I have used the FX3 on my last several shows and always find myself excited and pleasantly surprised. I’m looking forward to seeing what else it can do,” says Emmy award-winning cinematographer Checco Varese ASC.

In addition to true 24p, FX3 Version 3.00 and FX30 Version 2.00 now offer anamorphic lens desqueeze options of 1.3x and 2.0x while FX3 Version 3.00 now features focus breathing compensation. When used with compatible lenses iii, focus breathing compensation minimizes the shifts in the angle-of-view as the focus point shifts, with additional compensation available in post-production using Catalyst Prepare/Browse and the Catalyst Prepare Plugin. Other functionality has also been added to improve the camera’s ease of use, including the ability to switch from Standard Movie and S&Q Motion modes via the press of a button. File naming is now similar to our high-end CineAlta cameras such as the FX9, VENICE and VENICE 2, to ensure easy workflow, especially in projects where the FX3/FX30 is used as a B- or C-cam iv.

The new firmware update also features smartphone connection and integrates with Sony’s new Creators’ Cloudv platform for individual content creators. Creators’ Cloud provides services and optimized applications from shooting to collaborating with creators around the world. This Creators' Cloud platform also includes Creators’ App, a content transfer mobile application from camera to cloud.

Pricing and Availability

The new FX3 Version 3.00 and FX30 Version 2.00 update will be available on April 11, 2023, at 9pm PT. Filmmakers can easily download the update directly to their camera using a PC or Mac. More details can be found HERE.

About Cinema Line

Cinema Line is a series of cameras that have a cinematic look – cultivated from Sony’s long experience in digital cinema production – plus enhanced operability and reliability that respond to the wide variety of creators’ high demands.

Cinema Line includes Sony’s flagship digital cinema camera VENICE, which has been used on over 500 feature films, television and commercials, including three of the top grossing feature films in the world in 2022. The Cinema Line includes the professional camera FX9, which is popular for documentary and drama production and the FX6, for grab and shoot action and content creation. With the addition of the FX3 and FX30, the most compact cameras in the series, Sony offers a true line up of versatile creative tools for all types of visual storytellers.

Notes:

i When de-squeeze is active, autofocus and image stabilization are disabled. This function cannot be assigned to a custom button or Fn menu. ii At 24.00p, proxy recording is disabled. When 24.00p is selected or deselected, the camera will automatically restart.

iii Compatible lenses are listed at: https://support.d-imaging.sony.co.jp/support/ilc/breathing/en/ Angle of view and imager quality may change slightly when this function is turned ON. Full compensation may not be possible with some lenses. This function is not available when shooting movies at 120p, when using the S&Q mode at 120p or when shooting stills.

iv The file name of the recorded movie becomes "Camera ID+Reel number+Cameraposition+File number+Date+Random” string.

v Availability will vary by timing, countries and regions. The service will be updated regularly.

Image quality, vignetting, flare, and distortion test results, along with specs and standard product images, are now available on the Sigma 23mm F1.4 DC DN Contemporary Lens page.

Sigma recently promised to announce some unique lenses, and this lens is one of them. A 23mm lens? From SIGMA Corporation of America

SIGMA Releases New "I series" Lenses, Adding Ultra-Wide and Classic Prime Focal Lengths to the Compact, All-Metal Lineup

Ronkonkoma, NY – April 3, 2023 – SIGMA Corporation of America, the US subsidiary of SIGMA Corporation (CEO: Kazuto Yamaki. Headquarters: Asao-ku, Kawasaki-shi, Kanagawa, Japan) is pleased to announce two new prime lenses in the Contemporary line, designed exclusively for mirrorlesss camera systems.

The SIGMA 17mm F4 DG DN | Contemporary ($599 US MSRP through authorized retailers) and the SIGMA 50mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary ($639 US MSRP through authorized retailers) are stylish "I Series" full-frame lenses featuring all-metal barrels. These two lenses are offered in Sony E-Mount and Leica L-Mount. Both lenses will be available through authorized retailers in late April 2023.

The SIGMA 17mm F4 DG DN | Contemporary delivers supreme compactness in the widest "I series" lens to date. This super-compact, ultra wide-angle lens weighs just 225g (L-Mount), with a length of 48.8mm, and is designed specifically for full-frame mirrorless systems. It is an exceptional lens in terms of angle of view, optical performance, and build quality, with a design inspired by SIGMA CINE lenses. As an I series lens, it features a metal barrel with knurled focus ring, aperture ring and lens hood. Both metal magnetic and snap-on lens caps are provided.

By shortening the overall length of the lens and making changes to the focus configuration, the 17mm F4 DG DN | Contemporary lens is capable of focusing as close as 12cm with an impressive magnification ratio of 1:3.6, allowing for unique close-up photographs with expansive backgrounds, making it particularly appealing to vloggers, hikers, landscape photographers and more. A stepping motor offers swift, precise AF for both still and video applications.

The SIGMA 50mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary adds the classic standard prime lens focal length to the I series. This is the fifth F2 I series lens to date, joining the 20mm, 24mm, 35mm and 65mm lenses. All F2 I series lenses feature an arc-type AF/MF switch and a stylized ring on the all-metal barrel. This DG DN lens is designed specifically for full-frame mirrorless systems and is offered in Sony E-mount and Leica L-Mount versions.

Compact, lightweight and high-performance ultra-wide-angle 17mm lens with an impressive minimum focusing distance. Now available as a "Premium Compact Prime" I series lens.

"Compact, lightweight and high-performance ultra-wide-angle lens". Using the latest technology, the 17mm has been created without compromise, despite this challenging design concept. Its wide-angle of view creates impactful landscape images with a unique perspective and, thanks to its minimum close focusing distance of 12cm, the lens can be enjoyed in a variety of alternative ways, including close-up photography and handheld selfies.

The optical design has been created exclusively for mirrorless camera systems, which helps reduce lens flare and ghosting that results in excellent image rendering. The all-metal lens barrel highlights SIGMA's craftsmanship and attention to detail, making the SIGMA 17mm F4 DG DN | Contemporary a pleasure to use on every shoot.

[Key Features]

1. "Ultra-wide-angle lens" that matches the optical performance standards set by the SIGMA Contemporary line of lenses.

The lens construction consists of two SLD glass elements and three aspherical lens elements. Aspherical lenses are used for both the front and rear optics. This not only keeps the size of the lens compact but also helps with correcting lens aberrations. As a result, the lens features a 55mm filter thread (which is smaller than comparable lenses of similar focal lengths) which makes it easy to change filters between SIGMA I series lenses that share the same filter size.* Its construction also helps minimize flare and ghosting that is commonly found in ultra-wide-angle lenses, creating clear images in any environment. This is a lens with truly modern performance, thanks to the advanced processing and production technologies at SIGMA's only production facility in Aizu.

*In addition to the 17mm F4 DG DN | Contemporary, I series lenses with a 55mm filter thread include the 24mm F3.5 DG DN | Contemporary, 45mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary, and 90mm F2.8 DG DN | Contemporary (as of April 2023).

A highlight of using the 17mm is the impressive minimum focusing distance of 12cm. Capture close-up macro style images in remarkable detail with expansive backgrounds. It is also suitable for selfies and vlogging, where items need to be shown at an arms-reach. A quiet, high-speed stepping motor drives the AF delivering fast and accurate results in both stills and video.

2. Beyond "beautiful pictures" – the value provided by the SIGMA's I series

The SIGMA I series features full-frame compatible lenses that offer new value to mirrorless systems. The combination of superb optical performance with a level of compactness that is perfectly suited to smaller and lighter modern mirrorless cameras will bring you new opportunities for a perfect shot. SIGMA is aware that in today's world we have a wide range of camera choices, especially with the increase in mobile phone ownership. But with many photographers looking for something more than something that simply captures images when they choose to own a camera and lens, I series lenses offer the ultimate combination of superb optical performance, outstanding usability and compact form-factor. SIGMA's excellence in development and production technologies has been built up since our founding in 1961 and became increasingly sophisticated with the introduction of the SIGMA Global Vision brand in 2012. With this as a base, SIGMA has given careful thought to the quality of the products, the feeling of using it and the pleasure of owning it. This is how the I series was born.

3. Exceptional I series build quality with a compact form-factor

All I series lenses have an all-metal construction. The precision-cut aluminum parts not only give the barrel a sleek, stylish finish, but provide superb durability that improves the quality of the entire product. Metal materials are also used in internal structures that slide with the operation ring for added robustness. These high-precision components crafted with SIGMA's cutting-edge metalworking technology are also used in SIGMA's CINE LENS line-up for professional cinematographers and provide a tactile, ergonomic feel that make the lens a pleasure to use. What is more with the I series is that this high build quality is condensed into a palm-sized lens body. The SIGMA 17mm F4 DG DN | Contemporary is one of the smallest in the series. Combine with multiple I series lenses to create a remarkably compact shooting system that is lightweight and small in size.

Performance beyond expectations condensed into a small body.

50mm F2 joins the "Premium Compact Prime" I series.

The SIGMA 50mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary features high optical performance with a bright F2 aperture, that creates expressive images with a shallow depth of field and beautiful bokeh effects. With its compact size, this popular classic focal length is perfect for portraits, street and everyday photography. The lens has been designed to be used over a long period of time. Using that same technology that SIGMA used to create the SIGMA CINE lens range, the 50mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary uses an all-metal construct that is robust and provides a premium feel.

All these elements combine to create an exceptionally versatile lens that can be used in a variety of creative ways to create images in outstanding definition. Perfectly suited to new photographers looking to take the next step, professionals who require reliable lenses and photographers who prefer smaller full-frame lenses that offer the best optical quality.

[Key Features]

1. "Standard lens" that matches the optical performance standards set by the SIGMA Contemporary line of lenses.

SIGMA I series lenses are developed around the concept of "compact everyday lenses with outstanding image quality" and the SIGMA 50mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary is exactly that. It features high-quality optics in a compact size, perfect for a wide variety of photographic styles. Built from the ground up for mirrorless cameras, the SIGMA 50mm F2 DG DN | Contemporary is constructed using a single SLD glass element and three aspherical lens elements that are excellent at correcting various types of aberration for clear, high-definition images.

The conflicting ideals of improving optical performance while reducing body size and weight are achieved through the latest optical design, and the processing and production technologies at SIGMA's only production facility in Aizu.

The 50mm focal length is mostly known for portrait photography, so careful consideration was taken when designing the lens, focusing on the smoothness of the bokeh created by the F2 aperture. Its optical design gives smooth transitions from in-focus to out-of-focus areas, and helps minimize flare and ghosting caused by backlit environments. The quiet stepping motor provides quick, reliable autofocusing for both stills and video.

2. Expanding the I series lineup. "Creating pictures that are beyond beautiful".

The SIGMA I series features full-frame compatible lenses that offer new value to mirrorless systems.
