Should I Get the Canon EOS R6 Mark II or the EOS R8?

The Canon EOS R8 and Canon EOS R6 Mark II have the same imaging sensor, the same processor, and the same image quality. Otherwise, these two cameras have some significant differences.

Here are the Canon EOS R6 Mark II advantages over the R8:

  • Has full mechanical shutter

  • Has a customizable DOF Preview button on the front
  • Has Anti-smudge on the LCD
  • X-Sync 1/250 vs. 1/200 with electronic 1st curtain
  • 12 fps continuous shooting vs. 6 fps with electronic 1st curtain
  • At 40 fps (full electronic shutter), 75 image RAW buffer vs. 56
  • Movie recording length up to 6 hours vs. 2 hours.
  • LP-E6NH Li-ion Battery vs. LP-E17, 760 shots with LCD vs. 370
  • Has battery grip available
  • Has a joystick and rear control dial
  • Has a rate button
  • Has 3 custom modes vs. 2

The EOS R8 has some advantages:

  • Full electronic shutter supports exposures up to 30 seconds vs. 0.5 sec.
  • Smaller: 5.22 x 3.39 x 2.76" vs. 5.45 x 3.87 x 3.48" (132.5 x 86.1 x 70.0mm vs. 138.4 x 98.4 x 88.4mm)
  • Lighter: 16.3 oz vs.23.6 0z (461g vs. 670g)
  • At review time, $1,000 USD less expensive

While the R6 II is clearly the superior camera, the R8 earns a place in many kits by delivering the same image quality at a far lower price and by having a smaller size and lighter weight.
