From Canon USA:
Canon Unveils New Lenses for High-Level Social Creators Seeking Visual Excellence and Greater Expression Across Stills and Cinematic Video
MELVILLE, NY, March 26, 2025 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, has announced two new lenses designed for social media creators: the RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ, Canon’s first RF Lens with Power Zoom optimized for cinematic video, and the RF20mm F1.4 L VCM, a f/1.4 hybrid prime lens that enables high levels of expression across photo and video shooting.
The RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ lens is designed with a variety of shooting scenarios and needs in mind, from cinematic video to livestreaming and selfie POV. The RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ lens is packed with convenient functions for both still and video formats, including a wide angle of view, smooth cinema-style Auto Focus, optical Image Stabilization that suppresses blur in challenging situations, and more. Its uniform design and simple operability make it a worthy standard lens for the new Canon EOS R50 V camera, also announced today. When paired, the camera and lens make a beautiful, minimalist package, although the lens can also be seamlessly matched with Canon’s larger EOS R series of cameras.
The outstanding feature of the RF-S14-30mm F4-6.3 IS STM PZ lens is its power zoom design. Its fixed-length zoom with customizable control rings allows each individual creator to achieve their desired style and expressive intentions, while its ease of use allows them to prioritize their creative flow above all else. The use of a ring-style control for power zoom operations instead of a button or lever makes it possible to zoom from any direction regardless of shooting style. This gives more flexibility in angle of view adjustments, allowing users to enjoy great creative possibilities with smooth zooming while securely holding the camera, or zooming to change the angle of view from the front when taking selfies. And in vertical orientation, it provides outstanding operability that does not interfere with camera controls.
The RF20mm F1.4 L VCM is a 20mm ultra wide-angle lens and is the fourth addition to Canon’s RF Hybrid Prime series specifically designed for creators who switch between photo and video shooting. This lens pushes the boundaries of creative expression, offering extensive width, and depth, and beautiful dramatic effects for those who seek a high level of output across still and video shooting. Perfect for creators, video journalists, corporate video professionals, and independent filmmakers, the new RF20mm F1.4 L VCM lens is an impressive addition to Canon’s products that cater to the new era of hybrid shooting needs.
The lens features quiet, fast, and precise AF for both still and video shooting due to Canon’s actuator and focusing systems. It features dramatically reduced focus breathing compared to non-VCM lense, an iris ring for convenient movie shooting, and more. The unbeatable expressive power of an f/1.4 large aperture combined with shallow depth of field lends outstanding optical performance and enables rich, dynamic bokeh. The RF20mm F1.4 L VCM can also be used for shooting rich and clear videos and stills in dark places without increasing the sensitivity. Additionally, the UD and Super UD lenses and the Blue Refractive (BR) optics dramatically reduce the color bleeding that tends to occur with large aperture lenses.
The design of Canon’s RF Hybrid Prime series, now with the addition of the RF20mm F1.4 L VCM lens, was conceptualized to take full advantage of the RF Mount with its minimalist features and compact nature, to create an elegant, sleek camera package that any creator would be proud to take out of their camera bag.

To photograph a lunar eclipse, the sky must be clear. Historically, the Southwest has the USA's clearest winter skies, and going with the odds seemed the ideal decision. Death Valley National Park has the statistically optimal location and a long list of other photography opportunities, so it got the selection.
About 5 hours before the start of the eclipse, the selected Death Valley location, Stovepipe Wells, was getting an extreme storm. While there was little rain, the wind-blown dust and sand reduced visibility below 100 yards (meters) and blew fine sand through the edges of the solid hotel room door, coating everything in my room and creating little sand dunes just inside the door. It was crazy.
The forecast showed this storm coming, but much of the western US had the same or worse forecast. Forecasted clear skies were a flight away, and that option wasn't in play.
Miraculously, a slot of mostly clear sky opened up overhead just before the start of the lunar eclipse and closed just after the full moon reappeared. Heavy clouds were visible to both sides during much of that time, but the moon remained between them.
The primary goal for this trip was to capture the shots needed to create the lunar version of this 2024 Total Lunar Eclipse Phase Progression image. Goal met. #blessed
While the lunar eclipse was a top goal for this trip, most of the time was spent photographing the landscape, including many hiking miles carrying gear. The most solid tripod available is the optimal choice for photographing the dark total eclipse with a big, long-focal-length lens and long exposure, but a lighter model (that could still manage strong winds) was needed for landscape use.
Flying with more than one significant tripod impacts available storage, but this support need was solidly met by the Really Right Stuff TVC-32G Versa Mk2 Ground Carbon Fiber Tripod. A review of the TVC-32G Versa Mk2 has been on the to-do list for ... years, but it is an outstanding choice when short height is sufficient for the need. A lower tripod is typically less impacted by vibrations, and I was sitting for the eclipse, so height wasn't needed in that regard.
A Wimberley WH-200-S Sidemount Head solidly held the RF 600mm F4 L IS USM Lens and a RF 1.4x Extender on a Canon EOS R5 Mark II for exposures reaching 0.5 seconds.

I like this bull's body position, angling slightly toward the camera with nice leg separation and the leading leg slightly bent, showing motion. By getting the camera down low, the included background was farther away, making it more blurred, and the eye gets a larger catchlight.
The prominently visible drop tine is a much-loved antler abnormality. Hopefully, this bull's main beams will be slightly longer this year — so the drop tine does not interfere with the beam tip at this angle. :)

Sony Electronics Launches the Ultra-Wide 16mm F1.8 G Full-Frame Prime Lens
Compact and Lightweight Design Meets Exceptional Optical Performance
SAN DIEGO, Feb. 26, 2025 - Sony Electronics introduces the 16mm F1.8 G (SEL16F18G), a full-frame E-Mount lens that combines an ultra-wide 16mm focal length with a compact, lightweight build. Delivering high-resolution image quality, smooth bokeh, precise autofocus, and a bright F1.8 aperture, this lens is ideal in a variety of photo and video scenarios including landscapes, architecture, astrophotography, and more.
"At Sony, we are committed to providing creators of all levels with a diverse range of lens options to meet their artistic and technical needs,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “The 16mm F1.8 G is now the widest prime lens in our G lens lineup and pairs seamlessly with all our latest full-frame Alpha series cameras, as well as the FX3 and FX30 cinema cameras. With 79 E-Mount lenses now available, we are continuing our mission to ensure photographers, filmmakers, and creators have a breadth of high-performing lens options to bring their visions to life."
Ultra-Wide Performance with Stunning Bokeh
The 16mm F1.8 G is engineered for breathtaking, dynamic perspectives with an ultra-wide 16mm focal length. Its advanced optical construction includes two AA (Advanced Aspherical) elements to ensure razor-sharp resolution across all apertures. A combination of one Super ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass element and three ED elements effectively suppresses chromatic aberration, delivering edge-to-edge clarity. Additionally, Sony’s optimized coating minimizes flare and ghosting, resulting in stunning image quality even in challenging lighting conditions.
With a bright F1.8 maximum aperture and an 11-blade circular diaphragm, the 16mm F1.8 G produces beautiful, creamy bokeh that enhances subject separation. Its impressive close-up performance allows for a minimum focus distance of just 0.5 ft (0.15 m) with autofocus and a maximum magnification of 0.25x. When using manual focus, these values improve up to 0.43 ft (0.13 m) and 0.30x, enabling unique wide-angle compositions with extraordinary depth.
Powerful Performance in a Compact Form
Through advanced optical engineering, including Sony’s high-precision AA lens elements, the 16mm F1.8 G maintains ultra-wide capabilities in an impressively compact and portable form factor. Measuring just 3 x 3 in (73.8 x 75 mm) and weighing approximately 10.8 oz (304 g), it offers exceptional mobility without compromising image quality. Designed for professionals on the go, this lens excels in capturing expansive landscapes and intricate architectural compositions with precision and clarity.
Fast and Accurate Autofocus
Equipped with two XD (Extreme Dynamic) linear motors, the 16mm F1.8 G delivers rapid, precise autofocus with remarkable tracking performance. A newly developed control algorithm enhances responsiveness while reducing delay and vibration, ensuring smooth, near-silent operation. This makes it an exceptional choice for both stills and video, especially when capturing fast-moving subjects.
Optimized for Stable Video
Designed with videographers in mind, the 16mm F1.8 G minimizes focus breathing for seamless focus transitions. It fully supports the breathing compensation function1 available in compatible Sony Alpha camera bodies and pairs effortlessly with in-body Active Mode2 image stabilization to ensure steady footage, even while shooting handheld or on the move. The lens also features a standard 67mm front filter thread, making it easy to integrate with a wide range of filter accessories. The compact design3 is ideal for gimbal use.
Intuitive Controls and Reliable Build
The 16mm F1.8 G offers comprehensive manual controls, including a responsive focus ring, customizable focus hold button, focus mode switch, aperture ring, and iris lock switch. The aperture ring allows for tactile exposure adjustments, while the click ON/OFF switch enhances flexibility for both photography and video applications. Built to ensure durability and reliability in challenging environments, the 16mm F1.8 G features a dust- and moisture-resistant design and a fluorine-coated front element.
Pricing and Availability
The 16mm F1.8 G will be available in April 2025 for approximately $799.99 USD and $1099.99 CAD. It will be sold directly through Sony and at a variety of Sony’s authorized dealers throughout North America.

Sony Electronics Unveils Specialty 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS Super Telephoto Zoom G Lens: The Furthest Reaching Sony Lens To Date
Full-Frame E-Mount Lens Designed for Birding, Wildlife, and Sports Professionals
SAN DIEGO, Feb. 26, 2025 - Sony Electronics introduces the 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS (SEL400800G), its longest-range full-frame E-Mount lens to date1, setting a new benchmark in focal length reach for the Sony mirrorless system. The Sony E-Mount lens lineup previously peaked at 600mm, but the 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS extends the focal length to an incredible 800mm for specialty shooting. The additional reach is especially beneficial for birding, wildlife, aerial, and sports photographers seeking long-range lens capabilities.
The 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is designed to provide exceptional image quality and lens control across the entire ultra telephoto zoom range. Its internal zoom mechanism ensures stable handling, while its advanced optical design delivers creamy bokeh and sharp, detailed images. With a fast and accurate autofocus system combined with a durable, versatile build, this lens is a powerful tool ideal for both photographers and videographers documenting far away subjects.
"At Sony, we are dedicated to equipping photographers and videographers with the tools they need to push creative boundaries. The 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is a testament to this commitment, delivering unparalleled reach and reliability as a super telephoto within the G Series lens line-up,” said Yang Cheng, Vice President of Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. “By continually expanding our lens offerings, we ensure that Sony mirrorless users have the specialized gear to capture stunning imagery in even the most challenging environments."
Extended Reach, Bokeh, and Autofocus
As the newest addition to our G lens lineup, the 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is designed for exceptional performance and consistency, even while extended to the furthest focal length. It is the first Alpha lens to offer a super-telephoto range of 400mm to 800mm, delivering unparalleled reach for the Sony Alpha full-frame system. For applications such as birding photography, the 400mm to 800mm zoom range allows photographers to locate subjects at the wide 400mm end before zooming in up to 800mm for tight, detailed shots. For those who need even more reach, the 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is compatible with the 1.4x and 2x teleconverters2, extending its range up to a staggering 1600mm.
An internal zoom mechanism maintains a balanced length and weight distribution while adjusting focal lengths—enhancing stability and handling. A smooth, responsive zoom ring allows for precise adjustments, while a carefully designed structure helps prevent accidental focal length shifts. In addition, this lens’ zoom ring features a short rotation throw which enables quick zoom adjustments essential for tracking fast-moving subjects in birding, wildlife, and sports photography.
The 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS is designed for exceptional optical performance, featuring an 11-blade circular aperture that produces beautifully smooth, creamy backgrounds with stunning bokeh when shooting at a narrow depth of field. Six ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements effectively minimize chromatic aberration, while advanced coatings suppress flare and ghosting, ensuring crisp, high-contrast images even in backlit conditions.
For fast, precise focusing, the lens is equipped with two precision linear motors, enabling seamless tracking that keeps up with the Alpha 9 III’s 120 fps3 maximum burst speed and up to 240 fps in video4. Its quiet operation, focus range switch, and suppressed focus breathing allow for enhanced control and make this lens an excellent choice for both photo and video use.
Enhanced Stability, Control, and Durability
The 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS delivers solid support for both handheld and tripod-mounted shooting. Its built-in Optical SteadyShot™ (OSS) image stabilization minimizes shake-induced blur, and when paired with an Alpha camera body featuring in-body stabilization, stability is further enhanced. Durable construction, optimized balance, and a non-removable foot maximize reliability and performance. For tripod use, the tripod mount foot allows quick rotation between horizontal and vertical orientations, offering versatility for various shooting scenarios.
Designed for high-level control and reliability, the lens features three customizable focus hold buttons positioned at 90° increments for easy access in any orientation. Full-time Direct Manual Focus (DMF) automatically engages manual focus when the focus ring is adjusted, allowing for seamless fine-tuning. The redesigned lens hood includes a lock button and filter opening, ensuring effortless operation in any environment.
Additionally, the dust- and moisture-resistant5 design enhances durability, while a fluorine-coated front element repels contaminants for easier cleaning.
Pricing and Availability
The 400-800mm F6.3-8 G OSS will be available in March 2025 for approximately $2,899.99 USD and $4,099.99 CAD. It will be sold directly through Sony and at a variety of Sony’s authorized dealers throughout North America.

Photography News: Zeiss launches its new Otus ML series lenses for mirrorless cameras with 50mm f/1.4 and 85mm f/1.4 options, emphasizing imaging performance and build quality.
NEW YORK, Feb. 25, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- B&H is pleased to announce legendary optics company ZEISS's release of two new lenses, the Otus ML 50mm f/1.4 and the Otus ML 85mm f/1.4, as part of a larger launch of a new high-end lens series for mirrorless cameras. Available in Canon RF, Nikon Z, and Sony E mounts, the manual focus ML series lenses are the company's first stills-focused release in more than five years. Here, ZEISS continues the tradition of the first Otus family—originally made for DSLR cameras and known for their outstanding imaging performance, precision mechanics, and build quality. The new ML lenses will appeal to mirrorless shooters for whom time is no object in the pursuit of creative perfection.
The natural-eye perspective 50mm f/1.4 and the portrait-friendly 85mm f/1.4 both share the same high-end optical performance demanded by creatives and professionals alike. Engineered to reveal more than the naked eye, the apochromatic and aspherical lens design reduces chromatic aberrations and distortions to produce the classic ZEISS look characterized by sharpness, color fidelity, and three-dimensional quality.
The lenses' large maximum aperture benefits low-light work and low depth-of-field effects, to include an impressive bokeh further shaped by ten aperture blades. The 50mm has 14 lens elements in 11 groups, with the 85mm carrying a fifteenth. The renowned ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating also benefits color fidelity and while reducing lens flare.
ZEISS lenses are known for their precise and satisfying mechanical engineering, and the new Otus ML lens family is no exception. In this case, the all-metal construction is centered around the manual focus experience, where the 260° of precision-dampened throw is complemented by the ridged metal focus ring for smooth and precise focusing. The lens body's precision scales, marked with characteristic ZEISS yellow engravings, further promote the precision manual focusing experience.
The build also yields excellent results in video applications, where dampened throw and large rotation angle benefit focus-pulling. The lenses' internal focusing mechanism maintains the well-balanced lenses' centers of gravity, benefiting use on gimbals and other stabilizers. A de-clicked aperture ring allows for silent, on-the-fly settings adjustments.
For photographers whose work expands beyond studio confines, the lenses were also designed for use in adverse, outdoor settings. A blue seal at the lens base protects the camera body from dust and moisture, while other sealings protect the lens body. Rated for use in temperatures ranging from –4 to 130° F, the lenses are also resistant to shocks, drops, and other disturbances.

[Key features]
Ultra-telephoto zoom lens with the optical performance and brightness of a prime lens
Exceptional versatility in the ultra-telephoto range
The Sigma 300-600mm F4 DG OS | Sports extends the capabilities of a 600mm F4 prime lens with the freedom to zoom out all the way to 300mm without compromising optical performance. Its inner zoom mechanism minimizes center of gravity fluctuations throughout the entire zoom range, making it a versatile and easy-to-use tool for an unprecedented range of shooting situations.
Extremely high optical performance
The Sigma 300-600mm F4 DG OS | Sports features 28 lens elements in 21 groups, including 6 FLD and 1 SLD glass elements, anomalous dispersion glass, and high refractive index glass. Its optical design provides excellent correction of various optical aberrations, such as chromatic aberration, throughout the entire zoom range. Although a zoom lens, the Sigma 300-600mm F4 DG OS | Sports delivers the unparalleled optical performance of a prime lens.
High-speed autofocus and powerful optical stabilization to never miss a decisive moment
HLA-driven high-speed AF
Despite its large aperture of F4, the Sigma 300-600mm F4 DG OS | Sports features a lightweight focus lens group thanks to the use of a high-thrust HLA (High-response Linear Actuator), optimized optical power arrangement and state-of-the-art glass materials. The result is high-speed autofocus functionality with outstanding accuracy.
Powerful Optical Stabilization function driven by the OS2 algorithm
The Sigma 300-600mm F4 DG OS | Sports delivers exceptional optical stabilization of 5.5 stops* at 600mm. Powered by Sigma’s sophisticated OS2 algorithm and featuring a drive unit with a specially designed actuator and high-precision sensor, this lens effortlessly meets the demands of a large-aperture ultra-telephoto. Additionally, photographers have the choice between two Optical Stabilization (OS) modes: Mode 1 is suitable for most still photography and video situations, while Mode 2 was specially designed for panning shots. Driven by Sigma’s Intelligent OS2 algorithm, this mode stabilizes the image during horizontal, vertical, or diagonal movements, regardless of the camera’s orientation, enabling photographers to capture moving subjects with professional precision.
* Based on CIPA guidelines. (Measured at a focal length of 600mm with a 35mm full-frame camera)
Exceptional quality, functionality and features as the flagship of the Sigma’s Sports line
Combines high robustness and mobility
The lens barrel is made of magnesium alloy for the main parts and the hood is made of carbon, achieving both high robustness and light weight. In addition, the optical design with the center of gravity toward the camera greatly improves the weight balance, which tends to be front-heavy.
Thermal insulation paint for perfect lens performance
The exterior of the lens body is coated with a thermal insulation paint that effectively suppresses heat absorption from sunlight. This prevents the lens from heating up, even during long outdoor shoots in sunny weather, such as nature or motorsports photography.
New function ring adds extended functionality
The Sigma 300-600mm F4 DG OS | Sports features a newly added function ring that further expands the options of the lens. The focus ring offers two different modes, selected via its setting switch:
Focus Preset Mode:
By turning the function ring to the left or right, the focus can be instantly shifted to a pre-registered focus position. This is useful when frequently shooting at a fixed focus position.
Power Focus Mode:
Focusing at a constant speed is possible by operating the function ring. This allows for smooth focus shift during movie shooting as well as for focusing with minimal movement when shooting hand-held. Focusing speed can be changed in two steps depending on the angle at which the function ring is operated.
Durable and easy-to-handle tripod socket
The tripod socket's rotating mechanism uses bearings for both high durability and smooth rotation with an optional click/declick mechanism for each 90° angle to assist in accuracy. The tripod socket foot is compatible with Arca-Swiss type clamps, whichcan be easily removed and replaced with different interchangeable tripod sockets (available separately) to suit a variety of situations and preferences.
Equipped with a drop-in filter holder
The Sigma 300-600mm F4 DG OS | Sports features a drop-in filter holder for standard ø40.5mm filters. In addition, Sigma has developed a new drop-in circular polarizing filter and a variable ND filter (available separately) that can be adjusted by approximately 7-stops while dropped into the lens.
Weatherability of Sigma’s Sports line specifications
The mount joints, manual focus ring, zoom ring, custom switches and other control switches, and exterior joints are all protected from dust and splash by a dust- and splash-resistant structure*. Further, the frontmost surface of the lens is coated with a water- and oil-repellent coating to facilitate maintenance when water droplets or dust adhere to the lens.
* The structure is designed to be dust- and splash-resistant, but not waterproof. Be careful not to bring the lens in contact with a large amount of water. Water inside the lens may cause major damage and even render the lens unrepairable.
Various functions to support shooting
The lens features a variety of buttons and switches to accommodate individual preferences and the demands of different shooting situations, including AFL buttons in four different locations, a focus mode switch, a focus limiter switch, an OS mode switch (Mode 1 or Mode 2), and a custom mode switch. The L-Mount version of the lens is also compatible with Tele Converters (TC-1411/TC-2011) for AF-enabled shooting at a maximum focal length of 1,200mm.

There are few sounds better than a bull elk bugling.
Observation is a wildlife photography skill that pays off with better images. For example, learning that bugling elk usually hold their pose momentarily, giving the photographer time to (quickly) reframe the image and select a slower shutter speed, is beneficial from an image quality perspective.
Join me to photograph the elk rut in Rocky Mountain National Park this September (2025). I recently learned that a repeat tour participant had to cancel their reservation for both weeks due to medical reasons, so I have one opening for the first week of this previously filled tour.
