On the evening of January 20 (Sunday night), North/South America, Greenland and Iceland will be treated to a total lunar eclipse – or blood moon – with the full moon at perigee (supermoon).

At this point, the full moon will appear about 14% larger and 30% brighter than when it is at its farthest distance from earth (full moon at apogee, a.k.a. micromoon). Want more information and tips for photographing a lunar eclipse? B&H has you covered.

A penumbral lunar eclipse will occur tomorrow night at approximately 07:44 p.m. Eastern Time / 4:44 PM Pacific Time.

Unfortunately, this particular eclipse is unlikely to yeild any spectacular photo opportunities as the moon will only pass through the outer edge of the Earth's shadow making it much less impressive than a total lunar eclipse. Therefore, you might want to leave your camera in the bag, turn your head to the sky and simply enjoy a slight darkening of the Snow Moon (i.e., a full moon in February).
