The completely re-engineered Atomos Ninja TX monitor-recorder is packed with features and capabilities. How does 50% brighter sound for a start?

From Atomos:

Atomos Introduces All-New Ninja TX Monitor-Recorder

The most advanced Ninja ever: all new design with SDI, CFexpress, integrated cloud features, and blazingly fast performance.

Atomos is proud to announce the all-new Ninja TX, a completely re-engineered and advanced addition to the acclaimed Ninja monitor-recorder family. While other Ninja models offer only HDMI connections, Ninja TX features both 12G-SDI and HDMI 2.0 inputs and outputs, along with integrated Wi-Fi and AirGlu™ timecode technology. It introduces a brand-new industrial design that improves thermal efficiency, reduces weight, and enhances portability — all in a compact 5-inch form factor.

Despite its size, Ninja TX delivers powerful features previously reserved for the larger Shogun Ultra but adds support for ultra-fast CFexpress Type B media and recording to USB-C external drives. The all-new AtomOS Linux-based operating system provides faster performance, over-the-air updates, and a streamlined user experience. And of course, it includes all the extensive monitoring tools that have made Ninja the go-to field monitor for video professionals for over a decade.

Atomos invented the concept of a field monitor that also records to high capacity, removable media. With Ninja TX that vision takes a major leap forward. The addition of high-performance CFexpress media enables lightning-fast video capture, while high-speed USB-C adds the flexibility to record directly to external storage — ideal for extended shoots and fast turnaround workflows.

An external monitor gives so much more control of a shot than a camera’s built-in screen. Ninja TX’s 5-inch 1500 nit screen is 50% brighter than other Ninjas and is packed with pro monitoring features including EL ZONE™ false color, focus peaking, waveform, RGB parade, vectorscope and more, to help creators fine-tune exposure, color, and sharpness with confidence.

Ninja TX is built for the connected future. With integrated Wi-Fi and AirGlu, it ships ready for cloud workflows, including 20GB of free ATOMOSphere storage. Creators can upload footage directly to Frame.io, Dropbox, or other camera-to-cloud services — or stream via NDI 6/HX3 — enabling real-time collaboration and faster delivery from anywhere.

“This is the most advanced and capable Ninja we’ve ever built,” said Peter Barber, Atomos CEO. “While it may look similar at first glance, Ninja TX is a completely new product — re-engineered from the ground up. There’s nothing carried over from previous models. The mechanical design, electronics, and thermal system have all been rebuilt to make this possible.”

“I’m incredibly proud of the Atomos engineering team for achieving what many would’ve thought impossible: fitting 12G-SDI, HDMI, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and timecode sync via AirGlu into such a compact and lightweight design to create a highly portable, run-and-gun, monitor-recorder,” added Peter. “Atomos invented this category, and Ninja TX takes us even further ahead. Its size and versatility make it ideal for any professional camera rig. This is going to be a must-have for filmmakers everywhere. Ninja TX is the new production standard. No other monitor-recorder comes close.”

Also, unlike other models, Ninja TX comes with all major codecs pre-activated, so shooting can start immediately with the codec best suited to the project. Out of the box, Ninja TX supports Apple ProRes, ProRes RAW, Avid DNx and H.265/H.264. It can handle a wide range of resolutions and frame rates too, depending on the output of the camera: up to 120fps at HD resolution, up to 60fps at 4K UHD/DCI and up to 30fps at 8K UHD/DCI resolution.

Thanks to its redesigned cooling system, Ninja TX runs quieter and cooler than ever. Its dual USB-C ports allow simultaneous connection of external drives, accessories, or calibration devices, while 12G-SDI and HDMI connectivity ensures compatibility with virtually any camera or workflow. Ninja TX is a future-ready tool built to meet evolving content creation needs.

Atomos has developed a unique and rugged locking system to maintain a secure grip on connected HDMI and USB-C cables, and Ninja TX is supplied with special brackets to facilitate this. With a USB-C locking cable included (HDMI locking cables can be purchased separately) it’s the most robust cable system available today.

Atomos Announces New Ninja Series

The industry-leading ProRes monitor-recorder just goes from strength to strength

Melbourne, Australia – 14th August 2023 – Atomos has announced the latest generation of its hugely successful Ninja line of camera-mounted monitor-recorders: Ninja and Ninja Ultra.

The original Ninja rocked the world when it was introduced in 2010, combining an HD disk recorder with a touchscreen monitor you could hold in your hand. It captured pristine, uncompressed video direct from the first generation of DSLRs straight onto a removable SSD.

The latest Ninja base model handles video sources up to nine times that resolution, has a 5-inch HDR screen, records ProRes RAW, and connects to almost every camera in the world. Little wonder “Atomos” is now in the vocabulary of almost every filmmaker.

A key component of both new Ninja models is the completely overhauled operating system, AtomOS 11. Cleaner, fresher and faster, thanks to hardware performance optimized for AtomOS 11, it delivers a host of new features too, including EL Zone exposure referenced colorized image, ARRI False Color, and new scheduled playback & recording tools.

Both models sport a distinctive ‘camo’ color polycarbonate body and now include more codecs as standard: 6K ProRes RAW, ProRes, DNxHD as well as H.265, which was previously available as a paid option.

While the Ninja is targeted primarily at owners of DSLR and mirrorless cameras, Ninja Ultra is built to get the most out of camera to cloud technology and leans into cinematic workflows with Atomos Connect. It can record full-quality files to ProRes RAW up to 4K 60p while at the same time recording HD 60p to H.265, and supports automatic matching filenames, timecode and record from ARRI, Canon and RED cameras. More cameras will be supported very soon.

Ninja Ultra’s new 4K camera to cloud mode lets you record and upload much higher quality bitrate H.265 video with higher framerates. H.265 files are half the size of H.264 media. They’re small enough for camera to cloud workflows but more than good enough for immediate use on social media, sports reporting or news gathering.

Adding an Atomos Connect expansion module to either a Ninja or a Ninja Ultra enables Atomos RemoteView - a brand new technology that lets you share live views from your Atomos screen with other Atomos monitors, as well as with iPads, Macs and Apple TVs wirelessly. You can monitor what’s happening on-set and look through any connected camera taking the shot, from anywhere in the world. RemoteView is a total game-changer for remote production, offering many new features never seen before.

For Ninja Ultra only, the Atomos Connect module provides a lower latency, higher throughput and more stable connection with Wi-Fi 6E. Once again, Atomos is leading the way by incorporating this cutting-edge Wi-Fi standard into its cloud-enabled products.

Both Ninjas are backwards-compatible with their predecessors, Ninja V and Ninja V+, so all Atomos and third-party accessories can be used with the new products.

“While we continue to innovate, we continue to listen to our customers too,” said Trevor Elbourne, CEO of Atomos. “Ninja remains the go-to ProRes monitor-recorder for individual content creators and freelancers, but with even more functionality. If cloud connectivity is not your priority right now, that’s no problem at all - you can just add that option further down the road as your business dictates.”

“Ninja Ultra, on the other hand, has been tuned for cinematic workflows as well as the cloud, although we strongly recommend that it’s paired with the Atomos Connect module to maximize its potential for studios and broadcast facilities. The addition of dual recording in 4Kp60 ProRes RAW and H.265 has been the most requested feature since we introduced cloud-enabled products last year.”

Both Ninja and Ninja Ultra will be shipping from early September 2023, priced at $599/€599 and $799/€799 respectively, excluding local sales taxes. You can see them both at IBC, Amsterdam on the Atomos booth (11.D25).

From Atomos:

Atomos Supports ProRes RAW Plug-ins

Taking ProRes RAW to the next level

Melbourne, Australia – 23rd May 2023 – Atomos announces immediate support for Apple ProRes RAW plug-ins, an innovation that lets camera manufacturers provide their own ProRes RAW processing pipeline to take advantage of the unique properties of their cameras, sensors, lenses, and more.

ProRes RAW is widely regarded as the universal RAW video format. With the introduction of plug-ins, now every camera maker can provide their own unique processing, in a completely confidential way, by writing a single ProRes RAW plug-in that brings out the best quality and unique looks created by their own cameras. ProRes RAW becomes, in effect, the conduit for their custom processing, carrying the unique characteristics of any camera, sensor, processing, and lens combination into post-production. ProRes RAW plug-ins will be supported in Final Cut Pro as well as many third-party applications that have licensed the ProRes RAW SDK, such as nonlinear editors (NLEs) and color correction applications.

The process is very straightforward: simply install the camera vendor’s ProRes RAW plug-in and Final Cut Pro will automatically show all the new enhanced features of the supported camera. Using a ProRes RAW plug-in enables camera-specific adjustments such as custom white balancing, noise reduction, demosaicing, lens distortion correction, and more. Canon is the first camera maker to deliver a ProRes RAW Plug-in, with the EOS R5, R5 C and R6 Mark II cameras outputting RAW to an Atomos monitor-recorder. Atomos has already enabled full ProRes RAW plug-in support for these cameras in the current release firmware for Ninja V, Ninja V+, and Shogun Connect. Atomos supports over 50 camera models recording ProRes RAW from the camera’s RAW output over SDI or HDMI, so is uniquely placed to record this new enhanced metadata standard.

“This new feature for the ProRes RAW ecosystem is absolutely going to change the way people think about recording ProRes RAW,” said Trevor Elbourne, Atomos CEO. “For the first time the filmmaker literally gets the best of all worlds: shoot in ProRes RAW with the option to immediately apply camera-specific processing, use standard processing, or customise individual parameters to their own taste. You have to ask yourself: why wouldn’t you shoot in ProRes RAW?”.

“We are very proud to be working alongside Apple and Canon to bring this ProRes RAW innovation to market,” Elbourne added. “We were first to market with an 8K ProRes RAW compatible mirrorless camera - the Canon EOS R5 - and now we are making another huge advancement with the ProRes RAW format.” The ProRes RAW plug-in model has been designed to work not only with macOS but also with Windows and Linux.
