From today on Microsoft will no longer support Windows XP. The one thing everybody will always remember of Windows XP is desktop image 'Bliss', with it's green rolling hills and bluer than blue sky. Doesn't the most viewed picture of all times asks for a worthy goodbye? We certainly think so! That's why we hopped on a plane to Los Angeles and went to visit the photographer Charles O'Rear.
He told us the incredible story behind the famous desktop image of Windows XP.
From Think Tank Photo:
4/15/2014 - In this week's Pulitzer announcements, John Tlumacki's photograph from the Boston Marathon bombing was named as a finalist in the Breaking News Photography category. The photograph was also part of the Boston Globe's Pulitzer Prize winning Breaking News Reporting team coverage. In our newest About A Photograph video, located at blog.thinktankphoto.com/about-a-photograph, he describes his instincts as a photojournalist to run towards the bomb instead of away.
In the video, Tlumacki remembers: “I just reacted instinctively and ran forward. As I ran forward the second bomb went off and that’s the picture I made of the three police officers reacting to the runner, Bill Iffrig, who fell on the ground in front of me…I wasn’t really thinking about my safety at that point. I just think it’s my training as a journalist.”
Tlumacki has photographed 20 marathons during his 33 year career as a Globe general assignment staff photographer. He was named the National Press Photographers Association's Best Of Photojournalism 2014 Photojournalist of the Year (Larger Markets). He was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in photography for his coverage of the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and he was the Boston Press Photographers Association Photographer of the Year in 2011 and then again last year, in 2013.

April 14, 2014 - Profoto has supported the photographic community with free webinars for several years now. Over the years, the webinars have grown to become a monthly event with thousands of live viewers and tens of thousand watching the recorded video version.
Today, Profoto presents the next step in this evolution. Starting April 23, the Profoto webinars will be hosted by renowned wedding and lifestyle photographer Jared Platt. Jared will take the webinar series in a new problem-solving direction. The series’ title is On Location with Jared Platt. Each episode will start with him presenting a tricky lighting challenge. Then he will present the solution.
“Our aim is to show powerful yet simple lighting techniques for photographers working in less than ideal situations,” says Jared. “While some episodes will be more elaborate in scope, many will deal with lighting challenging locations with limited time and resources. In most of our webinars we will take the viewers on location with us in a behind the scenes look of various photo shoots.
The first On Location with Jared Platt webinar will be broadcasted on April 23. In this, Jared will head out into the Arizona desert. The desert is an uncommon shooting location, for sure. But the tips and tricks Jared will share are useful for any photographer wanting to create a beautiful light in harsh conditions.
“If you can light it in the Arizona desert, you can light it anywhere,” says Jared.
