Action photographer David Bergman has made a name for himself for everything from his iconic shots of Bon Jovi on tour to his GigaPan image of President Obama’s first inauguration. He’s shot for Sports Illustrated, MLB.com, CBS, The Travel Channel, The Washington Post, The Miami Herald, numerous musicians and record labels, and has even started a series of workshops.

Imaging USA 2014
From Imaging USA:

Annual International Photography Convention and Expo Heads to Phoenix

Phoenix, AZ – November 15, 2013 – Imaging USA, the annual get together for professional photographers, is bringing photography education, networking and inspiration to Phoenix this winter.

Just two months away, the 2014 edition of Imaging USA is set for Jan. 12 to14 at the Phoenix Convention Center in Phoenix, Ariz. More than 10,000 industry professionals will descend upon the Valley of the Sun for the three day convention.

Imaging USA is organized by Professional Photographers of America (PPA), the world’s largest non-profit photography association. The event features a three-day Imaging EXPO tradeshow with more than 600 booths, several all-inclusive parties and more than 100 speeches, presentations and hands-on demonstrations by some of the most respected names in the photographic industry.

This year, Imaging USA will feature a man more known for music than his photography, the legendary singer songwriter Kenny Rogers. Rogers, who was just inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame with a stirring tribute at the Country Music Awards, will be on-hand at Imaging USA to be recognized by PPA for his imagery with an honorary master of photography degree. He will also present his new photography book, give an hour-long Q&A to discuss his life and photography and an exhibit of his work will be display throughout the convention.

“We could see in his work that Mr. Rogers is an accomplished photographer, but when we approached him about the honorary master’s degree, we were immediately impressed with his enthusiasm for photography,” said PPA president, Ralph Romaguera Sr., M.Photog.Cr., CPP, API, F-ASP. “He’s obviously well-known as an entertainer, but he truly is a remarkably talented photographer. PPA is excited to honor Kenny and have him share his passion with us all in Phoenix.”

Rogers will receive his degree along with the 161 other photographers who earned PPA degrees in 2013. Immediately following PPA’s Award and Degree ceremony will be the inaugural presentation of the World Photographic Cup (WPC). Twenty three countries from all over the globe formed teams to participate in the first-ever WPC, an event geared to unite photographers in a spirit of friendship and cooperation, and crown the best photography in the world.

Along with Kenny Rogers are programs from some of the biggest names in photography. Imaging USA’s renowned educational classes are geared to improve a photographer’s business skills, photographic repertoire and use of photography and post-production technologies. The event also features several photographic exhibits, mentoring opportunities, portfolio reviews and much more.

Imaging USA is the longest running international photographic convention, expo and image exhibition in the world, drawing thousands of professionals from across the globe. The event dates back to 1880, when it began as the annual convention and trade show for PPA. It continues to grow and evolve along with industry trends and technology.

Because PPA believes in the value Imaging USA provides, it offers a free full-registration to Imaging USA as a perk for new members. Professional Active PPA memberships are available for $27.92 a month.

For everyone else, there are many different ways to experience Imaging USA, including but not limited to the full conference, a full conference plus pre-conference courses option, tradeshow only, the International Photographic Competition and off-site classes throughout the surrounding areas.

Visit imagingusa.org for complete registration information and pricing options. And keep checking back for updates to the event schedule.

Canon Australia Photo5 Winners 2013
Above: Canon Photo5 2013 Winning Images
Row 1, left to right: Kylie Garner, Sally Patterson, Josh Bakkum
Row 2, left to right: Denise McKenzie, Janis Unkovich, Nick Ch’ng

From Canon Australia:

Sydney, Australia, 31 October 2013: Today,Canon Australia announces the six winners of Canon Photo5, Australia and New Zealand’s most creative and original photography competition.

Each year, Canon Photo5 sparks a creative imaging movement across Australia and New Zealand, bringing out and celebrating people’s originality through the inspiration of five everyday objects in a simple brown box. Bringing together everyday people with a range of photography skill levels and creative backgrounds, the Canon Photo5 competition this year saw over 5260 entries with no one entry looking the same.

“The calibre of entries to this year’s competition was phenomenal. There’s an incredibly enthusiastic photography community across both Australia and New Zealand, and it’s amazing to see the originality that five everyday objects bring out in each person,” said Chris Macleod, Manager Consumer Segments & Digital Communications, Canon Australia. “Our Canon Masters, who are some of Australia and New Zealand’s most innovative image makers, were astounded by the results! Each interpretation of the objects was unique to the photographer, so it was no easy task for them to select the winners.”

Coming from as far as Western Australia and Queensland, the 2013 Canon Photo5 winners are:

  • Josh Bakkum, Brief One – Reflection, Open brief: “As far as reflections go this has it all. The images shows a lot of imagination, creativity and technique all combined to make this stunning picture. I especially like the combination of remote and time exposure. All in all a great picture." – Judge Mark Horsburgh
  • Denise McKenzie, Brief Two – Flour, Contrast: “This photo is striking and mysterious with the clash of red, white and black its strength. Compositionally well captured and a good use of the theme with strong sense of beauty and light.” – Judge Stephen DuPont
  • Sally Patterson, Brief Three – Eyes, Personify: “A rather simplistic yet brilliant photograph! Really well shot and framed and finished. A whole new way to say Cartoon Eyes.” – Judge Graham Munro
  • Kylie Garner, Brief Four – Jelly, Light: “A stand-out-from-the-crowd shot that moves away from a contrived black room and artificial light. Fundamental photography techniques have been applied to give jelly the focus and its intrigue when lit via natural light. Love the short depth of field to control where we look. Good post with colours dropped back in the background and highlight red on the Jelly.” – Judge Eugene Tan
  • Janis Unkovich, Brief Five – Shadows, Stencil: “The photographer has taken the brief and created an idea that goes further than the actual stencil. It's a nice concept and well executed.” – Judge Jonas Peterson
  • Nick Ch’ng, Portfolio competition, All briefs: “This portfolio stood out because of the use of selective colour. Black and white with the main subject in colour. Great ideas, well balanced compositions that all work well in expressing the individual briefs. Shows creative flair.” – Judge Jackie Rankin

Photo5 starts with everyday items in a simple brown box. This year, the items in the box were flour, cartoon eyes, jelly and a stencil, each designed to inspire people to use new subject matter in different ways and bring out their own unique perspectives. These items each represented one brief, in addition to the People’s Brief, “Reflections,” and the “Portfolio” competition.

This year a new line-up of Australian and New Zealand photography expert judges was carefully selected from Canon’s Masters program to come on board to guide entrants and determine the most creative images in the competition: Mark Horsburgh, Stephen Dupont, Graham Munro, Eugene Tan, Jonas Peterson and Jackie Rankin.

The winner of each brief and the winner of the Portfolio Competition will win an incredible creative photography workshop with Jackie Ranken and Mike Langford in New Zealand. Accommodation and flights are included with the workshop prize. Plus, each winner will receive an exhibition quality wall hanging of their choice from photoPICO.

Additionally, Rebecca Sullivan was awarded the voters’ prize, winning a Canon PowerShot G15.

From Custom SLR:

San Francisco, CA – November 14, 2013 – With four successfully-funded Kickstarter campaigns under its belt, Custom SLR, a photography accessories company in Silicon Valley, today launched its fifth project: the Air Strap, a camera strap that does more with less. Featuring breathable vents, moisture wicking fabric and a quick-adjust slider, the Air Strap provides more comfort and versatility for any photographer looking to replace the uncomfortable, hard-to-adjust strap that comes with his or her camera.

“Every photographer deserves a comfortable shooting experience,” said Ivan Wong, chief operating officer at Custom SLR. “With the Air Strap, we wanted to create a professional-quality strap that was affordable enough for anyone who uses a camera. We’re excited to deliver a feature-rich strap at a great price point.”

Following the overwhelming success of its patent-pending Split Strap, Custom SLR now has a second camera strap to add to its line of innovative photography solutions. The Air Strap features a convenient quick-adjust slider that allows photographers to shorten the strap to keep the camera secure at their side when maneuvering through crowds and tight spaces; when they need to take a photo, they can easily pull the slider to extend the strap. For maximum comfort and flexibility, the Air Strap has cushy neoprene padding with wicking fabric on the top and bottom, and it has buckles that swivel with each movement. The Air Strap is compatible with most cameras, and with an optional attachment, it can be used with most bags, such as laptop and gym bags.

The Air Strap will be made available first to backers who fund the project during its campaign, which ends on Jan. 9, 2014 at 8 p.m PST. For more details, visit the Custom SLR Air Strap Kickstarter page.
