Measuring only 0.5 x 1.1 x 3.6" (12.7 x 27.9 x 91.4mm), the Canon BR-E1 Wireless Remote easily fits in a small pocket or on a key ring, thanks to its built-in attachment loop.
Unlike the Canon RC-5 and Canon RC-6 infrared wireless remotes, the BR-E1 communicates using a Bluetooth Version 4.1 (GFSK modulation, low energy) standard and therefore does not require line-of-sight communication between the camera and the remote within its 16.4' (5m) range.
New with this particular wireless remote (besides Bluetooth) is the ability to remotely vary a lens' focal length when paired with the Canon Power Zoom Adapter PZ-E1. At the time of this publication, only one lens is compatible with the PZ-E1 – the Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Lens.
Using a wireless remote release eliminates camera motion related to pressing the shutter release – and allows you to be a subject in your photo. Being able to stay near your subject to assist in composition (or ease stress) is another benefit. With the ability to change compatible lens' focal lengths using the PZ-E1 adapter, the BR-E1 will be especailly appreciated by filmmakers who no longer have to touch the camera lens – inducing camera shake – to make zooming adjustments.
The Canon BR-E1 Bluetooth Wireless Remote runs on one CR2032 lithium button battery (included) that should last a year (the rated battery life) if not longer (but definitely have a spare on hand). The Canon BR-E1 Bluetooth Wireless Remote is a very useful device and, considering its low cost and minimal storage requirements, an easily justifiable addition to one's kit.
