The Nikon 8-15mm f/3.5-4.5E ED AF-S Fisheye is a wide-angle fisheye zoom for FX-format F-mount DSLRs. Key features include:

  • Wide-angle fisheye zoom

  • Fast, nearly silent autofocus and full-time manual focus

  • Electromagnetic aperture for stable exposure control

  • High-quality optical formula

Wide-Angle Fisheye Zoom. The Nikon 8-15mm f/3.5-4.5E ED AF-S gives you a circular 180° vertical/horizontal angle of view on full-frame cameras. On the long end of the focal range, it zooms to a rectilinear, non-circular fisheye view. You can also use this lens with DX cameras, on which it’ll give you a 12-22.5 equivalent focal-length range.

Silent Wave Autofocus Motor. The 8-15mm’s Silent Wave Motor provides fast, quiet, and precise autofocus performance that’s perfect for capturing fast-moving subjects. The internal focusing design retains the overall lens length during operation while contributing to a lighter overall weight. Full-time manual focus override is as simple as rotating the focus ring at any time.

Electromagnetic Aperture. This lens’s specialized electromagnetic aperture provides stable exposure control, which is especially beneficial when working with fast continuous shooting rates.

High-Quality Optics. Nikon’s first fisheye lens boasts an outstanding optical formula. Its three extra-low dispersion elements and two aspherical elements combine to minimize chromatic aberrations and coma while contributing to a compact lens design, while its Nano Crystal coating combats ghosting and flare. A fluorine coating on the front lens element helps keep dirt and smudges at bay.

Q & A

What do all of those lens abbreviations mean?

  • “E” is a reference to an E-Type lens which uses electronic aperture blade control for improved auto exposure accuracy during continuous shooting. Please note, E lenses have very limited compatibility. Refer to the camera compatibility list under Resources to determine whether or not this is the appropriate lens for your needs.
  • “ED” stands for “Extra-Low Dispersion” Glass and is a reference to specialized glass used for the correction of chromatic aberrations.
  • “AF-S” refers to Auto Focus that features Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor or “SWM.”

Does this lens provide a rectilinear image (fills the frame) on an APS-C / DX crop-frame sensor camera?

  • Yes and no. At 8mm, you’ll get a partially circular image with black corners. At 11mm (marked on the zoom ring), the image will be fully rectilinear. Zooming further will simply decrease the angle of view.

Does this lens provide a rectilinear image (fills the frame) on a 35mm full-frame sensor camera?

  • Yes and no. At 8mm, you’ll get a fully circular image with a black frame. At 15mm, you’ll get a rectilinear image that fills the entire frame. In between the two ends of the zoom, you’ll see the circular image gradually work its way to fill the sides of the frame.

Is this lens incompatible with any Nikon DSLRs?

  • Due to its electromagnetic aperture mechanism, this lens isn’t compatible with Nikon D90/D200/D2 DSLRs or older.
