This is one of the few classic lenses that we stock as specialty items. It is widely regarded as one of the sharpest wide-angle, wide-aperture prime lenses ever made. There were only 7,333 units made and probably less than half of those are still in excellent condition (as this one is, it was purchased from a collection). Each of these units was comprised of precision molded hand-ground glass, hand assembed with layers of super multi-coating. It is nearly as sharp at f/1.4 as stopped down, and probably reaches maximum sharpness by f/2.0.
These days, because of its expense, it is often used for specialty shots: astrophotography and Aurora photography, video special effects shot on an adapter, etc. It does autofocus on D300 and up bodies, but many people are using it as a manual focus lens for video work.
NOTE: This is a legacy item. It is a unique, very hard to find, and not repairable out-of-production lens. Unlike our regular stock we can’t ‘find another one’ if the previous renter is late returning it or it gets damaged before your reservation.
Please note: This lens does not have a built-in autofocus motor. Therefore, it is not fully compatible with Nikon DSLRs such as the Nikon D40, D60, D3100, D5100, etc.
