The Nikon 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED AF-S VR brings the superzoom to FX-sensor cameras (and can be used on DX sensors, too). Key features include:
10.5x zoom range
18-inch minimum focusing distance at every focal length
4-stop image stabilization
Fast, nearly silent autofocus
10.5x Zoom and 18-Inch Minimum Focus. The obvious appeal is the 10.5x zoom range and a rather spectacular 18-inch minimum focusing distance at every focal length. The VR II image stabilization allows you to handhold your camera at up to four shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper still images and stable video capture.
High-Quality Optical Design. The lens has nine aperture blades for producing smooth out-of-focus highlights, two extra-low dispersion elements, and three aspherical elements. It has internal focusing so filters are easy to use, and the Silent Wave Motor provides fast, nearly silent autofocus.

Let’s be clear: this lens is all about expectations. If a reviewer wants to rip it up, they can. It’s got barrel distortion at the wide end and pincushion in the middle. It’s soft in the corners and has some lateral chromatic aberration. Autofocus speed isn’t slow, but you’re not going to catch action sports with it, either. And wide open at the wide end it’s got a fair bit of vignetting. For any particular purpose you can find a better lens.
But that’s not what this is about. This lens does something that is really remarkable: it gives FX shooters a single-lens solution that gives good, sharp images from 28-300mm. If that was an easy thing, it would have been done before now. If it was an easy thing, Canon’s 28-300 wouldn’t be 3 times longer, 2.5 times more expensive, and twice as heavy. This, my friends, is a remarkable lens. As a vacation lens, a walkaround lens, and outdoor do-everything lens its just amazing. Lets put it in perspective: from 28-120 its just about as good (although not as wide an aperture) as the 24-120, plus you get the extra range at a lower price. An amazing thing Nikon has accomplished here.
Will fine-art, landscape, and wedding photographers be waiting in line to get a copy? Probably not. Will about a million other people be taking it on vacation? Absolutely!
No, this lens isn’t compatible with teleconverters.
“G” is a reference to a G-Type lens and is distinguishable from a standard D-Type lens by its lack of an aperture control ring. G-Type lenses relay distance information to compatible DSLRs like a D-Type lens but rely wholly on electronic aperture control through a camera body.
“ED” stands for “Extra-Low Dispersion” Glass and is a reference to specialized glass used for the correction of chromatic aberrations.
“AF-S” refers to Auto Focus that features Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor or “SWM.”
“VR” or “Vibration Reduction” is a reference to Nikon’s proprietary in-lens image stabilization.
