sional level lens like these F2. 8 units. I shot the 4 lenses in the open desert close to my house as well as in my small garage based studio / test range. The results were interesting.
In bright light the F4L lenses I own held up well to the F2. 8 copies at the higher f/stops of 5. 6 and up. At F4 the F2. 8 copies had the advantage of being stopped down 1 stop so they were starting to sharpen where the F4 lenses were wide open where sharpness does tend to suffer a bit. But all in all it wasn't anything earth shaking.
I dimmer light, like at just before sunset or when in the garage and shooting resolution / distortion charts, the F2. 8 versions had the advantage again and the images showed it. But the F4's weren't no slouches, but just required a little boosting of the ISO to achieve better results to hold neck and neck with the F2. 8.
Bottom line is while I like the 16-35mm F2. 8 III very much, for now I'll probably just keep an eye out for a cherry copy that happens to slip by unnoticed to my attention, like has happened a few times before. But if you're looking for an update to the previous version of the 16-35/2. 8 it might be good for you to rent this from LensRentals and give her a spin around town. Who knows, she just might grow on you. Regarding the EF24-70mm F2. 8L II USM I co-rented with the 16-35/2. 8 III, I like its focal range so much, that just after I returned them to LensRentals I happened across a 24-70/2. 8 v1 is what could only be called 'like new, cherry still on the tree, perfect condition for a really ridiculous low price. After some strong reviewing and communications with the seller to get additional photos, I bit the bullet and picked it up. It is a really nice lens, even with the points where the vII was improved. I feel that given my level of photography, this lens will keep me occupied for a long time. Read Less
