Pilings, Brooklyn Bridge Park, NYC Skyline at Sunset

Brooklyn Bridge Park is a great location to photograph Manhattan from and I found the pilings by Pier 1 to be a great foreground. By arriving well before sunset, I was able to work out what I felt were the ideal compositions prior to prime time, including sunset and the blue hour.

A manual HDR technique was used for this image. A shorter exposure was used for the area around the sun and for the direct reflection of the sun on the water (to retain the small wave texture in the foreground reflection). To increase the water smoothness (there was lots of boat traffic), a neutral density filter was used to permit a significantly increased exposure time. I had both a 2-stop and a 6-stop ND filters in use, but (sorry) ... I don't recall which were used for this image.

Shooting at this time of the day produced a very different result than just one hour later.
