From DJI:

DJI PRO’s Newest Products Give Creators Bold New Tools That Set Up Faster, Operate More Easily, Connect Seamlessly and Transmit for Miles

DJI RS 3, DJI RS 3 Pro, And DJI Transmission Incorporate Professional User Feedback to Offer Highly Effective, Reliable, and Efficient Next-Generation Video Tools

June 15, 2022 – DJI, the global leader in civilian drones and creative camera technology, today unveils three new tools that will enable filmmakers and the content creation community to easily, seamlessly, and intuitively bring their visions to life. The DJI RS 3 and DJI RS 3 Pro stabilizers bring landmark improvements to the classic and reliable Ronin series, while DJI Transmission – DJI’s first independent wireless video solution – combines reception, monitoring, control, and recording in one. This new generation of the Ronin ecosystem allows creators to focus on what’s in front of their camera by simplifying everything connected to it.

The Ronin product line is a key part of DJI, supporting content creators from keen hobbyists to professionals around the globe. Last October’s launch of Ronin 4D cemented DJI’s presence in the professional filmmaking world, giving cinematographers an entirely new way to create. Whether it’s the new automated axis lock system, 3rd-Gen RS stabilization algorithm improving performance by 20%, or the one-tap calibration, RS 3 and RS 3 Pro have been optimized for user efficiency and reliability.

“The needs and requirements of the content community are extremely important to us,” said Paul Pan, Senior Product Line Manager at DJI. “Ever since the introduction of the first Ronin back in 2014, we’ve continually gained feedback from industry professionals on how we can enhance our products to cater to their evolving needs. Implementing this feedback, we’ve optimized the design, stabilization, and gimbal control to create next-generation, highly effective, and reliable stabilizers designed for unparalleled efficiency. Furthermore, we don’t just stop at stabilization. We understand the importance of video transmission and the various pain points faced in large, complex venues. Whether it’s dealing with range, lagging images, or lost signals, the new DJI Transmission addresses these issues and offers an incredible 20,000-foot on-ground transmission distance.”

DJI RS 3: Ready When You Are

Every Second Counts

DJI RS 3 incorporates a range of new features to get filmmakers up and running as quickly as possible. A redesigned axes-locking system means that the process is now automated. By simply turning on the gimbal, the automated axis locks release and unfold the gimbal, allowing the operator to get started in seconds. Tapping the power button once will send the device into sleep mode, which makes powering on the device, stowing it away, and relocating much faster. There’s also no need for repetitive balancing with position memory via quick-release plates, enabling fast mounting with the perfect balance of the payload. Furthermore, the addition of a Bluetooth Shutter Button supports automatic connection without the need to connect a camera control cable.

Lightweight Body, Heavyweight Stabilization

Weighing in at just under 1.3 kg[1] (2.8 lbs), RS 3 can easily be held in one hand, while its just under 3kg (6.6lbs) tested payload capacity is more than enough to support the majority of mainstream devices.

Thanks to the 3rd-Gen RS Stabilization Algorithm, a 20% improved performance over RSC 2 can be seen, making it easy to operate while shooting at low angles, running, or even filming from a moving vehicle. For lenses with focal lengths of up to 100mm, SuperSmooth mode aids stabilization even further.

Parameter Setting at The Touch of a Screen

In addition to its improved stability, RS 3 is also easier to configure with a brand-new 1.8-inch OLED full-color touchscreen, an increase of 80% surface area when compared to the previous RSC 2. Most gimbal setups can be done directly without connecting to the mobile app, while the UI and interface logic have been redesigned to put all controls rights at your fingertips. This includes a physical gimbal mode switch that operators can slide to alternate between pan follow, pan and tilt follow, and FPV modes instantly.

All-Day Battery

With a brand-new battery grip providing up to 12 hours of battery life, creators can concentrate on the action without worrying about power. RS 3 features a quick-release structure and supports PD fast charging at 18 watts. The battery can be charged independently or even during use, allowing users to operate non-stop.

DJI RS 3 Pro: Nothing Out of Reach

For Those Demanding Even More

For users with higher demands, RS 3 Pro is an even more professional version offering a full suite of features as a versatile camera platform.

Arms constructed from one uncut piece of carbon fiber – just like Ronin 2 – makes RS 3 Pro lighter and stronger than the jointed carbon fiber material used on previous stabilizers. They have also been extended to allow for more balancing space for commonly used professional cameras like the Sony FX6, Canon C70, and RED Komodo, and the structure has been optimized to keep its weight at 1.5 kg1 (3.3 lbs) with an impressive 4.5kg (10lbs) tested payload capability. Naturally, the stabilizer also shares the automated axis locks, Bluetooth Shutter Button, 1.8-inch OLED touchscreen, and gimbal mode switch of RS 3.

Manual Lenses, No Problem

Manual lenses can bring focusing challenges for solo shooters involved in professional projects. RS 3 Pro carries Ronin 4D’s advanced LiDAR focusing technology to create the new DJI LiDAR Range Finder (RS), capable of projecting 43,200 ranging points within a 14-meter indoor area. A next-generation focus motor provides torque three times stronger with one-step mounting, enabling autofocus on manual lenses with no need for repetitive calibration. Furthermore, the LiDAR Range Finder carries a DJI-developed chip identical to the one used in Ronin 4D and a built-in 30mm camera, boosting the computing power of ActiveTrack by more than 60 times, creating ActiveTrack Pro. With target identification and tracking more sensitive and accurate than ever before, RS 3 Pro will enable professional cameras to maintain a steady, clear shot in even more dynamic scenarios.

Evolving Product Ecosystem

With its dual RSA/NATO port and battery port, RS 3 Pro can connect to various accessories such as the new Briefcase Handle, Twist Grip Dual Handle, and Tethered Control Handle, opening up a variety of shooting options.

The DJI RS SDK protocol enables third-party manufacturers and individual developers to create customized shooting solutions for RS 3 Pro to build an even richer ecosystem with more developers. Whether filming from a moving vehicle, with a jib or Steadicam, or from a cable cam or slider, RS 3 Pro provides anyone with comprehensive shooting solutions and greater creative possibilities.

DJI Transmission: Vision Beyond Boundaries

Going the Distance with DJI Transmission

DJI Transmission is DJI’s first independent wireless video solution. Developed on the heels of Ronin 4D’s advanced video transmission technology, this system combines reception, monitoring, control, and recording into one, taking your filmmaking experience to a whole new level.

O3 Pro transmission technology enables the transmission system to offer an incredible 20,000-foot on-ground transmission distance with end-to-end ultra-low latency, a massive upgrade from traditional Wi-Fi transmission. Video is transmitted in 1080p/60fps and provides live audio monitoring at 16-bit 48 kHz, offering crews an excellent remote visual and audio monitoring experience.

To cope with the demands of complicated signal and structural environments, a DFS band has been added on top of the traditional 2.4 GHz and 5.8 GHz settings, offering up to 23 channel options that provide crews with more compliant and interference-free transmission channels. A built-in frequency sweeper automatically scans the current electromagnetic environment for the best wireless channel, instantly switching channels when needed. When necessary, users can also manually select an appropriate channel to avoid interference between devices.

Wireless Monitoring

DJI’s 7-inch, 1500-nit High-Bright Remote Monitor includes an integrated receiver, eliminating the need for video cables running into a monitor. The device supports one transmitter with multiple receivers, as well as two transmission modes to address different transmission needs. In Control mode, monitoring can be carried out from two receivers at the same time, while the gimbal and camera can also be controlled remotely. For a large crew with various units such as lighting, art department, and props, Broadcast mode can also be enabled on top of Control mode, which will allow an unlimited number of receivers and elevate shooting efficiency to a new level.

On large sets like reality shows, DJI Transmission can work simultaneously with ten or more transmitters sending signals to transmit to ten devices, creating a completely synchronized experience that is hard to achieve with traditional transmission.

It’s All Under Control

DJI Transmission isn't just a powerful video transmission tool; it’s also a comprehensive control system. When used with RS 3 Pro, it can work as a gimbal and camera controller, unlocking more functions and fully integrating the ground-based Ronin ecosystem.

The High-Bright Remote Monitor has a built-in gyroscopic sensor that acts as a standalone motion controller for RS 3 Pro. And when combined with the Ronin 4D Hand Grips, the operator of an RS 3 Pro stabilizer can control the gimbal, focus, exposure, and start/stop a recording with both hands.

As well as simultaneous access to video time codes, the High-Bright Remote Monitor allows for independent recording and playback of 1080p/60fps H.264 footage, making it easy to edit sample footage on set.

Expanding on the Ronin ecosystem, DJI Transmission works seamlessly with DJI Master Wheel and Force Pro, giving operators a variety of ways to control camera movement in the whatever way the shot demands.

Apple ProRes 4444 XQ Codec, Zenmuse X9 Extension Cable & L-Mount Alliance

DJI PRO continues to collaborate with industry professionals while enhancing our products to cater to their evolving needs. As of August this year, Ronin 4D will support the Apple ProRes 4444 XQ codec, which is the highest-quality version of Apple ProRes for 4:4:4:4 image sources.

For these users, we are also introducing the Zenmuse X9 Extension Cable. With this addition, the Zenmuse X9 gimbal camera can be used separately from the body of Ronin 4D, helping cinematographers navigate more complex and diverse scenes while reducing approximately 80% of the weight they need to carry around, allowing for a more versatile and flexible filming experience.

As of today, DJI is officially a member of the L-Mount Alliance and has partnered with Leica to introduce the exclusive Zenmuse X9 L-Mount Unit, enabling Ronin 4D users to fit Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma L-Mount lenses onto their cameras.

From Canon USA:

Canon Honors Legacy Of Pioneering Photographers And Former “Explorers Of Light” With The Canon Legends Program

Number of Inductees Increases to 18 Since 2020 Program Launch

MELVILLE, NY, June 15, 2022 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced it is launching a new website to support Canon Legends, a program first announced in 2020 to honor and preserve the legacy and leadership of some of the most accomplished photographers of our time and former members of Canon’s renowned Explorers of Light program. In addition, Canon has announced it has increased the number of Canon Legends to 18. Through this program, these true industry legends will continue to share a lifetime of knowledge and experience through a variety of public and private events and activities including in-person presentations, workshops, editorial features, tips and techniques, and collaborations with educational venues.

The inaugural class of Canon Legends include:

Sam Abell
Harry Benson
Barbara Bordnick
Lauren Greenfield
Gregory Heisler
Ryszard Horowitz
Walter Iooss, Jr.
Douglas Kirkland
Parish Kohanim
David Kennerly
George Lepp
Duane Michals
Peter Read
Chris Rainier
Denis Reggie
Melvin Sokolsky
Joyce Tenneson
Art Wolfe

To honor their legacy, Canon developed the Canon Legends website, featuring iconic images created by these renowned photographers over their long and illustrious careers.

"Through its Explorers of Light program, Canon has worked with some of the most successful and iconic names in the history of photography and creating the Canon Legends program is one way we can honor and preserve their legacy," said Tatsuro "Tony" Kano, executive vice president and general manager of Canon U.S.A.’s Imaging Technologies & Communications Group. "They continue to be relevant members of our industry as mentors, teachers, and as active photographers. They offer a wealth of experience and are excited to share that knowledge with the next generation of creatives. Our hope is that the Canon Legends will provide education and support to the photographic industry, and beyond, for years to come."

All members of the Canon Legends program are former Canon Explorers of Light and were invited to join the program through a nomination committee comprised of Canon management and other photo industry experts. Each year, the committee will review the list of former Explorers of Light and nominate new members at its discretion.

Canon Legends Participate in NFT Collection

Canon announced that several members of its Canon Legends program have partnered with Immutable Image to create NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) from a limited collection of their photographs and publish them as a collective. "The Legends Mint" will drop on OpenSea, one of the largest peer-to-peer NFT marketplaces, on June 30, 2022. The photographers are partnering with Immutable Image, which is dedicated to introducing iconic photographs – past, present, and future – to a new generation of art lovers and collectors.

Canon Legends Partner With Immutable Image To Create NFTs From Iconic Photographs

"The Legends Mint" NFT Collection Brings Iconic Photographs to a New Generation and Creates a Parallel Revenue Stream to Traditional Gallery Print Sales for Photographers

MELVILLE, NY, June 15, 2022 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced that several members of its exclusive Canon Legends program have partnered with Immutable Image to create NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens) from a limited collection of their photographs and publish them as a collective. "The Legends Mint" will drop on June 30, 2022, using the Solana blockchain on OpenSea, one of the world’s largest peer-to-peer NFT marketplaces. Immutable Image and Canon are dedicated to bringing iconic photography direct from photographers to the NFT community in innovative and accessible ways.

Canon Legends is a program created by Canon to honor and preserve the legacy and leadership of some of the most accomplished photographers of our time and former members of its renowned Explorers of Light program. Legends participating in this first-of-its-kind Canon Legends NFT collection include Sam Abell, Barbara Bordnick, Gregory Heisler, Ryszard Horowitz, Walter Iooss, Jr., Melvin Sokolsky, and Joyce Tenneson.

"Canon understands that advancements in technology can translate to new platforms for sharing iconic works, which is what the world of NFTs is doing for photography," explains Tatsuro "Tony" Kano, executive vice president and general manager of Canon U.S.A.’s Imaging Technologies & Communications Group. "Canon wanted to help some of its Legends explore this medium and needed to find an organization familiar with blockchain technology and who, at their core, had an appreciation for photography and the arts. When Immutable Image approached us with their mission and impressive credentials in this space, we knew they were the right partner for these photographers."

"We are honored and very excited to be working with some of the most renowned names in the history of photography and look forward to introducing some of their iconic photos to a new visual platform and a new generation of collectors," said Bjorn Iooss, co-founder of Immutable Image and veteran professional photographer. "Our mission is to support both the photographic and NFT communities by building a new and diverse group of collectors for this culturally vital visual art form and introducing the work of these seven legendary photographers is an incredible start."

The Legends Mint

"Minting," in the world of NFTs, is a term used for publishing tokens (in this case, photographs) on the blockchain to make them available for others to purchase. Immutable Image is curating "The Legends Mint" collection of seven legendary photographers whose works focus on sports, fashion, fine art, portraiture, travel, still life, and pre-digital special effects photography. Each photographer is offering exceptional photographs to "The Legends Mint," with a total supply of editions to be announced. There will be exclusive 1/1 NFTs available from each participating photographer along with multiple edition NFTs.

All participating purchasers of this Mint will receive a randomly selected, unique NFT photograph from "The Legends Mint." Purchases will not include copyright or commercial rights to the image itself. Instead, it will present a unique and limited edition NFT, much like the purchase of a traditional, limited-edition print from a gallery or directly from the artist. The rarity and variance of what purchasers receive will be in the edition size of the image, the artist, and the imagery itself.

"I have to admit that the notion of selling my work in limited editions or as one-of-a-kind art on a digital platform that offered no tangible hard-copy print was a bit foreign to me, but equally intriguing," explained Canon Legend Ryszard Horowitz, who is widely recognized as a pioneer of special effects photography predating digital imaging. "I’ve always been attracted to new ways of creating and sharing my work, so I thought this was an interesting opportunity to explore. I’m also honored and thrilled to be collaborating with these other legendary photographers, most of whom I’ve known my entire career and I’m grateful to Canon for bringing us together."

In addition to creating a truly fair and affordable way to collect iconic photography, NFTs are generating a completely new channel for photographers to generate revenue. "The sale of NFTs and traditional print sales are parallel offerings that can co-exist together," explains Bjorn Iooss. "In fact, NFTs can provide revenue in perpetuity," he said, explaining that photographers will continue to receive commissions on the resale of photographs already on the Blockchain, something they do not receive in the traditional open market. "Photographers traditionally received payment from the initial sale of a print, but nothing from the resale of that same print. This changes everything."

New Alpha 1 Firmware Update Enables 8K 4:2:2 10bit Recording and Lossless RAW File Options

SAN DIEGO, CA – June 13, 2022 – Sony Electronics Inc. today announced the v1.3 firmware update for the flagship Alpha 1 full-frame mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, adding 8K 4:2:2 10bit recording and Lossless Compressed RAW for still images.

Using newly added 8K[i] 4:2:2 10bit capabilities, filmmakers and cinematographers can more precisely customize the vibrancy and color grading of their recordings. Combined with the Alpha 1’s 8.6K oversampling for extraordinary 8K resolution, the new addition of 4:2:2 10-bit recording lets filmmakers and content creators realize their creative vision with incredible realism and color.

The update also adds Lossless Compressed RAW files in S, M, and L (small, medium, or large) file sizes. Selecting L size preserves the same image quality as an uncompressed RAW format while significantly reducing the file size. The M and S sizes record fewer pixels than the L size, providing more manageable RAW files. With Alpha 1 v1.3, users can freely combine JPEG and their choice of Lossless Compressed RAW sizes based on their use case. This is especially beneficial with a user needs to deliver JPEG files immediately, but also needs RAW files for in-depth editing.

The Canon EOS R10 is here, and it is time to set up this camera for use. Following are the 46 steps taken to prepare an out-of-the-box EOS R10 for use.

  1. Open the box, find the battery, place it in the charger, and plug it in.
  2. While the battery is charging, unpack the other items you want from the box.
  3. Not required, but consider downloading and installing the latest Canon imaging software to get support for the latest camera model(s). Canon Digital Photo Pro (DPP), EOS Utility, and Lens Registration Utility are the options I manually include in the install.
  4. Attach the neck strap (if using).
  5. Insert a memory card (we'll format the card in a later step), insert a charged battery, and power the camera on.
  6. The date, time, and time zone setup screen will show at the first startup. Use the rear control dial and set button to update this information.
  7. Set the camera's mode to Av, Tv, or M (some modes may provide only a subset of available menu options).
  8. Scroll through all of the menu tabs to configure the camera as follows:
  9. Shooting Menu, Tab 1: Image quality: Use the top control dial to set RAW to "RAW", and use the rear control pad to set JPEG to "-" (RAW image files provide the highest quality and are especially valuable for post-processing work)
  10. Shooting Menu, Tab 2: Auto Lighting Optimizer: Off
  11. Shooting Menu, Tab 4: White balance: AWB W (White) (I seldom use another white balance setting while shooting, though I often adjust white balance modestly during post-processing)
  12. Shooting Menu, Tab 4: Picture Style: Neutral with Sharpness = 1 (Note: the low contrast "Neutral" picture style provides a histogram that best shows the available dynamic range. I usually change the Picture Style to "Standard" in DPP after capture.)
  13. Shooting Menu, Tab 5: Lens Aberration Correction: All options "OFF" (I suggest that most photographers enable Chromatic Aberration correction)
  14. Shooting Menu, Tab 5: High ISO speed NR: Low (noise reduction is destructive to images details - I prefer to add noise reduction sparingly during post-processing)
  15. Shooting Menu, Tab 7: Release shutter without card: OFF (only in a retail store would you want to press the shutter release without saving the image file)
  16. Shooting Menu, Tab 8: Image review: Review duration: 4 sec. (the Viewfinder review option is disabled by default, speeding the shooting process)
  17. Shooting Menu, Tab 9: Shooting info. disp.: Screen info. settings: Enable 1, 2, 3, and 4; edit screen 2 to show only: Basic shooting info and Electronic level; edit screen 3 to show only: Basic shooting info, Histogram, and Electronic level
  18. Shooting Menu, Tab 9: Shooting info. disp.: VF info/toggle setting: Enable 1, 2, and 3 (default); edit screen 2 to show only: Electronic level; edit screen 3 to show only: Histogram and Electronic level
  19. Shooting Menu, Tab 9: Shooting info. disp.: Grid display: 3x3 (sometimes the 3x3 grid is helpful for alignment checking while not complicating the view)
  20. Shooting Menu, Tab 9: Shooting info. disp.: Histogram disp: RGB, Small (show the brightness levels of each channel separately and do not let the graph to take up much space in the display as it can affect the perceived composition)
  21. Shooting Menu, Tab 9: Disp performance: * select Smooth if shooting fast action and battery life is not a concern. Select Power saving otherwise.
  22. AF Menu, Tab 1: Subject to detect: Select People, Animals, or No priority as makes sense for your current shooting scenario
  23. AF Menu, Tab 4: Touch & drag AF settings: Touch & drag AF: Enable (allows the thumb drag across the rear LCD to quickly move the AF point while looking through the electronic viewfinder)
  24. AF Menu, Tab 4: Limit AF methods: enable Spot AF, 1-point AF, Whole area AF
  25. AF Menu, Tab 4: Orientation linked AF point: Separate AF pts: Pt only (instructs the camera to individually save the selected AF points for vertical and horizontal orientation)
  26. AF Menu, Tab 5: MF peaking settings: Peaking: On
  27. AF Menu, Tab 6: RF lens MF focus ring sensitivity: Linked to rotation degree
  28. Playback Menu, Tab 4: Magnification (apx): 10x (allows one button press during playback to zoom deeply into the image)
  29. Playback Menu, Tab 5: Playback information display: 1, 2, and 3 only; change view 2 histogram to RGB
  30. Playback Menu, Tab 6: Highlight Alert: Enable (overexposed pixels will blink during image review)
  31. Wireless Menu, Tab 1: Airplane mode: On (turn off wireless when not in use)
  32. Tools Menu, Tab 1: Format card (always format a memory card in-camera before using it - all data on the card will be lost)
  33. Tools Menu, Tab 1: Auto Rotate: On computer (images are properly rotated when viewed on a computer, but are always oriented to fill the LCD when viewed on the camera)
  34. Tools Menu, Tab 2: Mode guide: Disable
  35. Tools Menu, Tab 2: Beep: Disable (probably no one wants to hear your camera's beep)
  36. Tools Menu, Tab 5: Custom shooting mode (C1, C2): Auto update set: Enable (see Configuring Custom Shooting Modes)
  37. Tools Menu, Tab 5: Copyright information: enter as desired
  38. Custom Functions Menu, Tab 1: Bracketing auto cancel: OFF (I want to control when AEB (Auto Exposure Bracketing) is enabled and disabled)
  39. Custom Functions Menu, Tab 1: Bracketing sequence: -0+ (if images are captured in brightness sequence, they are easier to work with during post-processing. Capturing the darkest image first means quickly getting the first frame)
  40. Custom Functions Menu, Tab 3: Customize buttons: turn off white balance, turn off flash exposure compensation, enable exposure compensation, enable AF Area
  41. Custom Functions Menu, Tab 3: Customize dials: Control ring: OFF (consider using this dial for a function logical for your needs)
  42. Custom Functions Menu, Tab 4: Default erase option: [Erase] selected (less safe, but one less button press required to delete an image)
  43. Custom Functions Menu, Tab 4: Retract lens on power off: OFF (prevents a carefully-selected focus distance from resetting when the camera auto powers off)
  44. My Menu: Add My Menu 1; Register the following options: Expo.comp./AEB, IS (Image Stabilizer) mode, Expo. simulation, Subject to detect, Format card, Date/Time/Zone (great for monitoring the time); reorder menu items as desired
  45. My Menu: Add My Menu 2; Register the following options: Anti-flicker shoot., Focus bracketing, Shutter mode, Disp. performance, Sensor cleaning, Number of bracketed shots, RAW burst mode, reorder menu items as desired
  46. With a lens mounted and a subject focused on, adjust the viewfinder diopter until the scene is sharp

I make additional menu and other setting changes based on current shooting scenarios, but this list covers my initial camera setup process.

To copy this configuration means you intend to shoot as I do - including in RAW-only format. While this setup works great for me, you should adjust the setup to your needs.

If you can't remember your menu setup parameters, keeping an up-to-date list such as this one is a great idea. Anytime the camera is set to the factory state, such as when being serviced or when acquiring an additional camera, you will be ready to create your setup quickly, while ensuring that an important setting is not omitted. If you purchase another same or similar camera, setup will be fast and identical.
