From Sigma:

The “Bokeh Master” will begin shipping in Canon, Nikon and Sigma mounts in late June for a retail price of $1,599.00 USD

Ronkonkoma, NY – May 25, 2018 – Sigma Corporation of America, a leading still photo and cinema lens, camera, flash and accessory manufacturer, today announced that its 105mm F1.4 DG HSM Art lens will be available in Canon, Nikon and Sigma camera mounts in late June for $1,599.00 USD through authorized US dealers. The Sony E-mount availability will be announced later.

The “Bokeh Master” with Longest Focal Length Among Sigma Wide-Aperture F1.4 Art Lenses

The Sigma 105mm F1.4 DG HSM Art is the ninth lens in the Sigma F1.4 line-up designed for full-frame cameras. To combine outstanding wide-aperture, mid-telephoto performance with F1.4 brightness at maximum aperture, this lens incorporates 17 optical elements in 12 groups, including three FLD glass elements, two SLD glass elements and one aspherical lens element. This optical setup minimizes axial chromatic aberration to deliver ultra high resolution along with ample peripheral light volume, which minimizes vignetting. As a result, the area in focus is extremely sharp, while the out-of-focus area features a beautiful bokeh effect with highly natural colors, making this a desired lens for portrait photography. The optical design also minimizes sagittal coma flare, making it an excellent choice for capturing starry skies.

Featuring the Sports line level dust- and splash-proof design, this lens can be used in varying weather conditions. The high-speed, high-accuracy autofocus helps photographers react in an instant to capture those special moments. Other lens highlights include carbon fiber reinforced plastic hood for durability and compatibility of the Canon mount lens with the Canon Lens Aberration Correction function.

 Wednesday, March 14, 2018

Last week, we reported that Sigma had released firmware updates for several of its Global Vision-series lenses. The updates was designed to allow compatibility with Canon’s in-camera Lens Aberration Correction. However, it seems the updates may have had unintended consequences.

A site visitor noticed that after updating his Sigma 50mm f/1.4 Art lens' firmware to v.2.00, his lens exhibited noticeable backfocusing which required a -8 setting at various focus settings to correct via the Sigma USA Dock.

As I had yet to update my own Sigma 50mm Art's firmware, I decided to see if I replicate the issue. I tested the lens' performance on my 5D Mark III and 7D Mark II and the lens focused accurately with no AFMA value applied in-camera or in-lens (via the USB dock) with firmware v.1.00. After updating Sigma Optimization Pro to the latest version, I upgraded the Sigma 50A's firmware to v.2.00. After the upgrade, the lens required a -6 AFMA correction to be applied either in-camera or in-lens (at all focus distances) for accurate autofocusing.

Note that the Sigma 50mm Art lens' AF was advertised as being adjusted in its specific firmware release notes for "an improved focus accuracy during Live View mode."

We're interested to know whether or not the AF recalibration is necessary for all of the lenses whose firmwares were updated, or if it's only the Sigma 50mm Art that's experiencing the issue. So if you have one of the following lenses and you'd like to provide your feedback, apply the latest firmware update and let us know if your lens required recalibration for accurate AF.

  • SIGMA 35mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art Canon
  • SIGMA 50mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art Canon
  • SIGMA 85mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art Canon
  • SIGMA 135mm F1.8 DG HSM | Art Canon
  • SIGMA 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | Art Canon
  • SIGMA 24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM | Art Canon
  • SIGMA 100-400mm F5-6.3 DG OS HSM | Contemporary Canon

Let us know how it goes in the comments.

From Sigma:

Since 2013, The SIGMA Corporation has been offering a “Mount Conversion Service” for SIGMA’s Global Vision (Contemporary, Art and Sports) lenses. With this service, the mount and key components inside your lenses can be replaced, adjusted and optimized for another camera mount.

Since the introduction of this service, we have maintained the cost which was set originally to ensure the best possible customer support. This service requires not only a simple mount replacement, but also a detailed assessment of the individual lenses we receive from our customers.

Due to the growing complexity of the conversion service and the increasing cost of required parts, we are having to revise the cost of our Mount Conversion Service.

We appreciate your understanding and continued support for our company and products.

New Product Features

SIGMA launches seven interchangeable Art lenses for Sony E-mount cameras with full-frame sensors

While offering the same high-performance optical design as other lenses in the Art line, the new Sony E-mount models will feature a newly developed control algorithm that optimizes the autofocus drive and maximizes the data transmission speed. In addition, these lenses will be compatible with Sony’s Continuous AF (AF-C) and high-speed autofocus, which are not addressed by MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11.

The lineup will include the Art line set of seven prime lenses covering 14mm to 135mm. It will also include two models that SIGMA will be exhibiting at CP+ 2018: 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO | Art and 105mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art (launch date TBD). From Sigma:

Front Conversion Service: Service Overview

To support the needs of virtual reality creators engaged in multi-camera videography, SIGMA is offering the new Front Conversion Service for the 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM | Art lens . With this service, SIGMA converts the petal-type hood of the lens to an exclusive round component that lacks a light-blocking function. The new front helps prevent the lens from interfering with other lenses or from casting a visible shadow during multi-camera work. This is a for-fee service performed exclusively by SIGMA. Use of the service has no impact on the validity of the product warranty.

Cost, service time and warranty depends on each country and territory.

Please contact your nearest authorized SIGMA service station for more information.

I can't help but think that very few people will be removing their Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 DG HSM Art's hoods, but the option is available for those doing "multi-camera work."

Can you think of any other reasons why you would want to leave such a large front element unprotected? Also, can you spot another notable difference in the lenses pictured above, aside from the missing lens hood? My guess is that at least one of these pictures was taken earlier in production, when the final design hadn't been fully estabilished. [Sean]
