Just letting you know that the Determining the Age of a Canon Lens Using Serial Numbers and Date Codes page has been updated with serial numbers and date codes for 2017.

The Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM Lens was the latest Canon lens I've checked. It bears a serial number starting with "47", indicating that this lens was likely manufactured in the November 2016 timeframe, which is very likely the case. Note: The image above does not show the serial number for the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS II USM lens.

Also note that I continue to get the occassional report of a recently-produced lens having the older-style date code. This table remains available with the new year included in it.

GoPro's Karma drone was recalled in November of last year because several of the drones were dropping from the sky like stones after the UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) lost power in flight. To say GoPro's first venture into the UAV market was "a little bit bumpy" would be un understatement for sure.

However, a GoPro CES 2017 press release indicates that the Karma will once again be hitting store shelves later this year, though GoPro is [understandably] a little vague on the re-release details.

From the press release:

Karma will re-launch in 2017. GoPro withdrew Karma from the market in November 2016 after a small number of instances of power loss due to a mechanical issue related to securing the drone's battery. GoPro is completing its testing, and in early February, will provide more detail for the global relaunch of Karma in 2017.
With the DJI Mavic Pro still in short supply, every day that the GoPro Karma is unavailable is another opportunity lost to fill orders in the new foldable drone market segment.

XUME Adapters, the magnetic quick release system for lens filters, was [seemingly] quietly acquired by Manfrotto in September of last year. When I contacted XUME to ask whether Manfrotto had taken over the brand or if it was simply a distribution partner, a spokesman (David) for the company said:

"XUME is a Manfrotto product as of September 2016. They haven't done a lot of press yet but will be doing an official re-launch soon."
So what will this acquisition mean for the XUME brand? If I had to guess, I'd say that XUME products may benefit from increased promotion and wider availability in the months to come. Though, only time will tell. [Sean]

From Canon:

TOKYO, January 5, 2017—Canon Inc. will celebrate in March the 30th anniversary of the launch of the Company's EOS System, which includes EOS-series interchangeable-lens cameras and a diverse range of system accessories, beginning with interchangeable EF lenses.

Canon's EOS System made its debut in March 1987 with the launch of the EOS 650 single-lens reflex (SLR) camera and EF lenses. An acronym of "Electro Optical System" while also carrying the name of the Greek goddess of the dawn, the EOS series saw first light in 1987 as the world's first fully electronic mount system, representing a new generation of AF SLR cameras.

With all the digital camera key devices—the CMOS sensor, image processor and interchangeable lenses—utilized by the EOS System developed in-house, a strong product lineup began to take shape as the basic performance of each product steadily increased. Playing to this strength, Canon released the first entry-level DSLR in September 2003, the EOS Kiss Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D in other regions), ushering in a new digital era. With the Kiss Digital highly praised for its compact, lightweight design, user-friendliness and competitive price, Canon seized an overwhelming portion of the interchangeable-lens camera market that year, taking the No.1 share, which it has held for 13 consecutive years through 2015. What's more, thanks to long-term support from customers, in November 2015, cumulative production of EOS-series cameras reached 80 million units, and in August 2016, the total number of EF lenses produced surpassed the 120 million-unit mark.

Since its debut in 1987, the EOS System has consistently aimed to expand the boundaries of photographic expression, and with Canon's optical technology at its core, the Company continues to refine its imaging technology and strengthen and expand the EOS System. In 2008, the Company released the EOS 5D Mark II, the world's first digital SLR camera equipped with a Full HD video function, facilitating the widespread adoption of digital SLR cameras as a tool for capturing video, and in 2012, that video technology was transformed for the B-to-B sphere in the form of the Cinema EOS System, introduced to the world in Hollywood, California. Now, the EOS System, including the Cinema EOS System, comprises 24 models with a selection of 97 EF lens models. With this rich product lineup, the EOS System meets the various needs of different users.

Canon will continue to refine its diverse imaging technologies based on its core optical technology, combining still-image, video and network capabilities to expand and create an even stronger EOS System that meets the needs of increasingly diverse users to promote the spread of photo and video culture. What's more, thanks to advances in imaging technology, Canon is opening up new expressive avenues, where texture, three-dimensionality and a sense of realism can be recreated in both still images and videos, to support appealing imaging experiences.

From the Canon Digital Learning Center:

In recent years, Canon has expanded its high-end, G-series compact camera line. What was once a line of a single upper-end, full-featured camera, has grown into a line of five distinct, premium cameras. All take advantage of significantly larger imaging sensors than we typically see in compact digital cameras, as well as extensive user-control features which target the enthusiast user who (at least occasionally) wants control and input over various camera settings.
...
NEW: PowerShot G9 X Mark II
The most compact model in the premium G-series. An expert’s compact camera, with numerous user controls, but in a pocketable size and form-factor. 3x (28–84mm equivalent) zoom lens; still has the large 1-inch sensor size, for superior low-light imagery (compared to majority of slim, compact digital cameras).

Obviously, there is one less tree on the ranch.

While I mostly used the Canon EF 600mm f/4L IS II USM Lens on this elk photo trip, there were times when I was really glad to have the Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens readily available. In this case, thanks to the zoom range afforded by this lens, I was able to capture both full-body images and close-ups in rapid succession.

This huge rutting bull rocky mountain elk was in the bottom of a valley that had long been in the shade from the setting sun. He was intently tearing up this tree, which meant that I needed a fast shutter speed to stop the motion. My choice of 1/1000 was certainly not overkill, but I wanted to keep the noise levels down as much as possible. The 5D IV's ISO 5000 looks good enough that choosing an even faster shutter speed would have been a non-issue.

With the upward head angle, it was almost as if I was lighting the 8x7 bull with a huge softbox in the studio.

With the holidays in the rear-view mirror, it is time to start concentrating on winter photography and the opportunities this season holds.

Snowcapped mountains, frozen lakes and the crisp, clean air lend themselves to serene, wide angle landscape imagery. Frost on perennial plants beg for macro lens use while wintery wildlife photography can make good use of your long telephoto lens(es).
