United Kingdom, 11 SEPTEMBER 2015 – Canon today announces that the XC10 video camera has been independently tested in accordance with European Broadcast Union (EBU) standards for HD content acquisition. The tests found that the large 1.0 inch Canon CMOS sensor coupled with Canon’s DIGIC DV5 image processor provides ‘little or no aliasing’ concluding ‘ its performance meets (HD) Tier 1, and it easily meets (HD) Tier 2L’ allowing its use in a wide array of broadcast and cinematography applications.

The XC10 joins several of Canon’s high-end professional broadcast cameras in meeting the criteria defined by the European Broadcasting Union, including the Canon XF305, the Canon EOS C300 and the Canon EOS-1DC. The XC10 has impressive low light performance and image quality, which, combined with its compact size and remote controllability, makes it an ideal main or secondary camera in HD broadcast acquisition.

The European Broadcasting Union recommendations exist to help broadcasters understand which technology is best suited for certain tasks. The UK's digital production partnership broadcasters use these recommendations to ensure their content meets a minimum threshold.

Owners and purchasers of the Canon EOS C300 Mark II will soon be able to benefit from a new lens mount service option which offers the capability to change the 4K Digital Cinema Camera’s original EF mount to EF with Cinema Lock or to a PL mount and back again.

After purchasing the C300 Mark II, service mount options will soon be available from Canon Regional Competence Centres (RCC) in France, Germany, Italy, Sweden or the UK. These services are expected to be available in October 2015; further details of how you can purchase the lens mount options will be communicated shortly.

Canon has also revealed that from early 2016 a PL mount version of the C300 Mark II will be available to purchase in all EMEA territories. Up until now the camera has only been available in an EF mount but by January 2016 customers can choose whether to purchase an EF mount or a PL mount version. The upcoming PL mount version of the camera will provide support for all of Canon’s PL mount Cinema lenses and other industry-standard PL lenses (Cooke/i not supported), thus allowing for even greater shooting possibilities.

Note: The article above doesn't go into much detail, but the EF Cinema Lock Mount first appeared in the ultra-high ISO ME20F-SH announced July 30th 2015. From my understanding, the EF with Cinema Lock mount eliminates the slight "wiggle" that can occur when EF lenses are attached to a traditional EF mount (especially problematic if a follow focus is being used).

Sep 11th, 2015 – In its largest-ever simultaneous product release RØDE has announced six new products today at the IBC show in Amsterdam, including two new microphones, a pair of carbon fibre boompoles, an XLR interface for Apple iOS devices and an XLR adaptor for the company’s popular RØDELink 2.4GHz digital wireless system.

RØDE’s VideoMic family is the world’s favourite on-camera microphone, and the company is proud to announce two new models in the range – the VideoMicro, and the VideoMic Me.

Measuring only 80mm long, the VideoMicro is a small, lightweight on-camera microphone designed for use on compact cameras. A directional microphone, it reduces distracting peripheral sounds and focuses on the audio in front of the camera. Its pickup is more forgiving than RØDE’s other on-camera microphones providing a more natural sound when recording indoors. Perfect for capturing incredible audio to accompany inspiring vision.

Included with the VideoMicro is a camera shoe mount with Rycote Lyre shock mount. Featuring a suspension structure composed of a hard-wearing thermoplastic, the Lyre is far more effective at minimising unwanted vibrations, handling and cable-borne noise than traditional elastic suspensions. Virtually indestructible, it will never sag, snap, wear out or require rethreading to maintain its effectiveness.

The VideoMic Me is a high-quality directional microphone designed for Apple iPhone and iPad. Featuring a TRRS connector and adjustable mount it is compatible with a range of Apple devices and can even accommodate some cases. It features a headphone jack conveniently located at the rear, to allow for monitoring and playback without removing the microphone.

Both microphones include a deluxe furry windshield and feature bodies made from aluminum, giving them a high level of RF rejection. The microphones are finished in RØDE’s high-grade ceramic anti-glare black coating.

Continuing its innovation in the mobile audio space, RØDE has announced the i-XLR, a digital XLR interface for Apple iOS devices. Used to connect professional XLR microphones to an iPhone or iPad to record audio in the field, the i-XLR allows reporters, correspondents and audio professionals to quickly and easily capture professional interview dialogue to a smartphone or tablet.

An intuitive record button provides the user with operation without accessing the mobile device, and an LED indicates the recording status (in supporting apps). A headphone jack with variable level is conveniently located on the body to allow the operator to monitor their audio during interviews, and for dynamic microphones the i-XLR features a +20dB level boost, giving these microphones a high level of clean gain.

To accompany the i-XLR RØDE has previewed an updated version of its RØDE Rec app that supports remote record functionality for the new interface device, as well as an innovative set of EQ presets for industry-standard interview microphones, that optimise the audio for consistency across recordings, as well as an optional 'safety track' that can be set at a lower level.

The revolutionary RØDELink digital wireless system has been making waves since its release earlier this year. Currently available as the 'Filmmaker Kit', including a camera mounted receiver (RX-CAM), beltpack transmitter (TX-BELT) and broadcast-grade lavalier microphone, its 2.4GHz digital communication technology allows for robust, secure transmission of audio at ranges up to 100m.

RØDE is excited to announce that it is expanding the RØDELink range, with the launch of the 'Newsshooter Kit', which includes a camera-mounted transmitter and the new XLR transmitter (TX-XLR).

It easily connects to handheld presentation microphones as well as shotgun microphones, with a 3.5mm input and headphone output. Providing one-touch sync with RØDELink receivers and supplying P48 phantom power, the unit can be powered by 2 x AA, a Sony NP-F970 battery or continuously via Micro USB.

RØDE also plans to make each of the RØDELink devices available separately, so customers can mix and match to suit their needs.

Closing out the product announcements, RØDE has introduced two new professional carbon fibre boompoles, complementing the company’s popular range of aluminium poles.

Weighing only 535gm (18oz), the new RØDE Boompole Pro extends to a full 3m (10’) and collapses to 810mm (2’8”). Each of the five pole sections is comprised completely from carbon fibre making it incredibly lightweight while maintaining high levels of strength. The sections are easily extendable with one hand thanks to an intuitive twist-lock mechanism.

Designed for use with professional shotgun microphones such as the RØDE NTG3 as well as the Blimp windshield system, the Boompole Pro joins RØDE’s popular boom pole range which now consists of five models ranging in size, weight, and construction material.

Alongside this RØDE has also announced the Micro Boompole Pro, a very thin version of the full-size carbon fibre model, optimised for use with the new VideoMicro microphone. Using a unique modular design, the Micro Boompole Pro’s three sections combine to a maximum length of 2.2m (7’2”). Using an industry standard 3/8” thread, these sections can also be used to extend the Boompole Pro.

The VideoMicro, Boompole Pro and Micro Boompole Pro are shipping now, and the VideoMic Me, i-XLR and RØDELink Newsshooter Kit will be available Q4 2015.

When faced with the task of deciding on a new home, I had one requirement – an extra room (or garage) that I could convert into a small studio space. Previously, I would have to clear a portion of a room (usually the living room) and set up my lighting equipment only to tear it down a few hours later in order to conduct a portrait session in my home. Having set up and broken down my equipment many more times than I care to count, I was relieved when we found a new home with a large extra bedroom that I could convert into my dedicated studio space.

But even though the room is a decent size for a bedroom, I worried that it would still be a little cramped for studio use. I needed a real-world portrait session in order to understand the benefits and limitations of the room. That's where Melinda comes in...

Melinda is a personal trainer who wanted some marketing images to promote her business via website and social media. This was the opportunity I had been looking for to give my new studio space a real "workout." We scheduled her session for Labor Day and I immediately started planning for the shoot.

I actually started setting up equipment two days in advance in order to test out a few ideas before settling on the setup you see below.

Here are some thoughts and details regarding the setup:

• It took me a while to decide on what backdrop I wanted to use. At first I used piece of black felt fabric I had but 1) it was a bit too small for anything more than a headshot and 2) it absorbed so much light that I couldn't effectively use colored gels with it. I then tried a Botero 5x7 Collapsible Background but eventually decided it was too small. Then I remembered that I had something else in the closet – a 6' x 50' roll of weed block fabric that I had purchased for a previous shoot (the weed block fabric was significantly less expensive than a traditional fabric of the same size).

  I had originally cut the weed block fabric into three sections and hung it from a background support crossbar to use as a dark background. I thought it would work well for this type of shoot, too, especially if the sections were doubled over and hung over the crossbar with folds like a curtain.

• To give the background some color I used two gridded Canon Speedlite 580EX flashes with CTB (blue) gels. The grids helped me limit the background light to specific areas while also keeping the colored light from hitting my subject.

• I wanted to create a strong rim light on the subject. That's very typical of the athletic/workout image genre and I thought it would work well here. I used two monolights with small gridded strip boxes to keep the light from contaminating the background (light spilling from ungridded modifiers on high-powered lights could easily kill the color in the background).

• I used a RoundFlash Ringflash Adapter affixed to an on-camera 580EX to provide a touch of fill light to capture details in the shadow areas and trigger every other light in the setup using optical slaves. With this light dialed down, it didn't wash out the background light very much.

• I used a monolight and gridded 16" beauty dish boomed above the camera as a main light whenever the subject was looking at the camera. The position of the light (above) and the fact that it was gridded helped keep the light off the background. Note that I'm using a drop down pin to suspend the monolight from the boom arm. The drop down pin allows the monolight and its modifier to hang so that the weight is supported by the tensioning knob, not the screw that would usually simply attach the rig to the top of a light stand. That particular screw isn't designed to support a large amount of weight but simply keep your light perched in its place and pointed in the right direction.

• As for the camera and lens, I was using a Canon 5D Mark III and the ever-so-useful EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM. The great focal range of the 24-105L allowed for a lot of flexibility in framing, especially considering the relatively small working space.

The only specific concept that I wanted to try during the shoot was to have Melinda punching her fist into her palm causing a cloud of talcum powder to erupt from the impact. Unfortunately, none of our attempts to capture that particular shot were satisfactory enough to post-process. The rest of concepts/poses we captured were conceived in a collaborative manner as the shoot progressed.

The client was extremely happy with her images, so it was a successful shoot overall. My takeaways from the session:

1. The studio space is certainly adequate for headshots; not so much for full-body portraits and/or 3/4 portraits in landscape orientation (especially when using a background that isn't the wall).
2. I probably should have tried different background options but I was happy with the results we were getting and didn't want to risk ruining the flow of the session by taking the time to change the setup. Having another background at hand (rather than in my closet) may have changed that decision and allowed for more variation in the images.
3. Shooting with a ring light complicated things a bit. I had to adjust my focal length/framing a couple of times to avoid hard vignetting caused by capturing the inside of the ring light in the shot.
4. Care must be taken when using the strip boxes so that light doesn't leak out the side in between the mount and the speed ring (washing out the background color). Adjusting the flap of the strip box material can usually solve this problem.
5. Suggesting that the client bring several props can be a real benefit. I don't have much workout gear (my one dumbell was relegated for use as a door stop only a month after its purchase several years ago). The clients dumbells and gloves looked great in the shots and gave the client something to do with her hands.

• Fixes a phenomenon in which, while performing an EF lens firmware update, the progress bar displayed on the LCD monitor may freeze at 100% even though the update has been completed.
• Fixes a processing error in relation to the leap second for the “Geotag information appended to image” and “Log data” GPS functions.
• Fixes a phenomenon, where at the time of shooting in very rare cases “Err 70” occurs, or the shutter does not release.

Canon developing next-generation imaging devices to expand the possibilities of visual expression

United Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, 8 September 2015 – Canon Europe, a leader in imaging solutions, today announces that its parent company, Canon Inc., is developing a Cinema EOS System 8K camera and professional-use 8K reference display that will support the production of next-generation 8K video content, along with a still-image single-lens reflex camera equipped with a CMOS sensor featuring approximately 120 million effective pixels. Through the Company’s proprietary imaging technologies, Canon provides still and video input and output devices that will contribute to the development of imaging culture.

Canon, as a leading company in the field of imaging technology, conducts research and development into devices designed to support cinema and video production with the aim of expanding the boundaries of visual expression. Through the further enhancement of the Cinema EOS System 8K camera and professional-use 8K reference display under development, Canon aims to contribute to smooth production workflows, facilitating not only the input and output of 8K video content, but also such processes as 8K to 4K down-conversion and 4K cropping.

The Cinema EOS System 8K camera being developed will be equipped with a Canon Super 35 mm-equivalent CMOS sensor that makes possible high-resolution 8,192 x 4,320 pixel (approximately 35.39 million effective pixels) imaging performance even at a frame rate of 60 frames per second with 13 stops of dynamic range and a richly expressive wide colour gamut. Additionally, featuring a body size that realises outstanding mobility and a design that delivers high levels of operability, along with an EF mount that offers compatibility with Canon’s extensive interchangeable EF lens lineup, the camera will support diverse shooting styles and means of visual expression.

Incorporating Canon image-processing technology, the ultra-high-resolution 8K reference display currently under development will achieve high brightness, high contrast (high dynamic range) and a wide colour gamut. Additionally, with a pixel density exceeding 300 pixels per inch, a level approaching the limit of human visibility, the display will make possible ultra-realistic imaging that enables the reproduction of subtle changes in light that were previously not possible. Furthermore, when used in combination with the Cinema EOS System 8K camera, the display will be capable of conveying truly impressive levels of visual expression.

Featuring a resolution of approximately 120 effective megapixels, the SLR camera now being developed will incorporate a Canon-developed high-pixel-density CMOS sensor within the current EOS-series platform, which will realise compatibility with the Company’s diverse interchangeable EF lens lineup. The high-resolution images that the camera will be capable of producing will recreate the three-dimensional texture, feel and presence of subjects, making them appear as if they are really before one’s eyes. The camera will facilitate a level of resolution that is more than sufficient for enlarged poster-sized printout while also enabling images to be cropped and trimmed without sacrificing image resolution and clarity.
