From Sony Electronics:

Sony Electronics Delivers Firmware Updates including C2PA Compliancy as a Next Step to Ensure Authenticity of Images

More than 45 Updates for the Alpha 1, Alpha 9 III, Alpha 7S III, and Alpha 7 IV will also improve Shooting Functions and Workflow

SAN DIEGO, March 27, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Sony Electronics delivers the highly anticipated firmware updates for the Alpha 1 (Ver. 2.00), Alpha 7S III (Ver. 3.00), Alpha 7 IV (Ver. 3.00), and after April 2024, the Alpha 9 III (Ver.2.00). The update contains some of Sony's most impactful technology, including Camera Authenticity Solution, the proprietary in-camera digital signature and C2PA (Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity) format supporti. Together, these tools will make it possible for news agencies to ensure the authenticity of images, contributing to industry efforts to protect creators, and society from fake imagery.

Additionally, the firmware updates include many requested features to improve everyday use. The update evolves shooting functions and post-shooting workflow and brings advanced movie features like breathing compensation. It also includes new remote-control capabilities, new features for professional applications, and expanded access to cloud services applications.

"There is nothing more core to our mission than listening to the voices of the photographers, videographers, and filmmakers who shoot with Sony Alpha cameras. We know this community has been asking for these updates, and we're happy to deliver. Each of these updates are designed to promote ease of use for our creators and allow them to maximize the strengths of their cameras," says Yang Cheng, Vice President, Imaging Solutions, Sony Electronics Inc. "We're especially pleased to deliver C2PA compliancy with this update. This compliancy paired with our unique digital signature technology, allows us to offer the most secure and comprehensive solution to protect professional photographers, news agencies, and society from manipulated imagery."

Camera Authenticity Solution

Last year, Sony announced its commitment to developing technology in its cameras to aid in the fight against manipulated imagery and AI-generated fakes. The severity of this issue is only increasing and it's a complex problem that requires the focus and attention of our entire industry.

One critical part of the solution is making more Sony cameras C2PA compliant. C2PA is a Joint Development Foundation project, where Sony is a steering committee member. C2PA aims to develop an end-to-end open technical standard to provide publishers, creators and consumers with opt-in, flexible ways to understand the authenticity, and provenance of different types of media. The C2PA is a standards-setting body that will develop technical specifications on content provenance and authentication by certifying the source and history of media content. With this firmware update, the authenticity information embedded on images from Alpha 1, Alpha 9 III, Alpha 7S III, and Alpha 7 IV can be maintained from capture through publication. This provides professional photographers with the ability to preserve their digital signature from the camera, while tracking the editing history throughout revisions.

Another critical component of the solution is Sony's in-camera digital signature technologyii that signs images in real-time. This new feature certifies the authenticity of an image at the point of capture and creates a 'digital birth certificate' that is retained throughout revisions. The signature contains metadata including 3D-depth information captured through the proprietary technology in the image sensor developed by Sony. This depth information can show if the image captured was of an actual 3D object, vs a photograph of an image or video, providing an extra level of protection and even more assurance of the content's authenticity, and making Sony's solution especially unique for photojournalists and news agencies.

Sony's solution also helps protect the authenticity of content by including an Image Validation Site, which verifies the image even after edits have been made by C2PA-compliant editing software. This service confirms the authenticity of the photo was taken by a specific camera and that the object of the photo is 3D. This service will initially be offered to select news media agencies, expanding to other agencies at a later date.

New Firmware Update Adds Features to Sony FX3 and FX30 https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=37950&Title=New-Firmware-Update-Adds-Features-to-Sony-FX3-and-FX30

From Sony Electronics:

Sony Electronics Announces New Firmware Update for FX3 & FX30

The new firmware enables the cameras to shoot DCI 4K in true 24 fps, adds anamorphic lens desqueeze and breathing compensation to bring unified operability and common workflow to the Cinema Line

SAN DIEGO, CA –Today, Sony Electronics announced new firmware updates for the FX3 full-frame digital cinema camera and the FX30 Super 35 digital cinema camera, enhancing their features for cinematic storytelling and connectivity for film creators. Since its launch, the FX3 has become a popular tool for everyone from high-end feature films, television series and independent filmmakers around the world. Now, after feedback from the community, Sony is pleased to offer new updates to enhance high-end filmmaking. FX3 Version 3.00 and FX30 Version 2.00 include highly requested features such as the ability to shoot DCI 4K in true 24.00p (4096 x 2160)ii with new format XAVC S-I DCI 4K (17:9).

"The FX3 is a great companion to the VENICE in the filmmaking adventure. Its color rendering and accuracy equals its bigger sibling, the VENICE. I have used the FX3 on my last several shows and always find myself excited and pleasantly surprised. I’m looking forward to seeing what else it can do,” says Emmy award-winning cinematographer Checco Varese ASC.

In addition to true 24p, FX3 Version 3.00 and FX30 Version 2.00 now offer anamorphic lens desqueeze options of 1.3x and 2.0x while FX3 Version 3.00 now features focus breathing compensation. When used with compatible lenses iii, focus breathing compensation minimizes the shifts in the angle-of-view as the focus point shifts, with additional compensation available in post-production using Catalyst Prepare/Browse and the Catalyst Prepare Plugin. Other functionality has also been added to improve the camera’s ease of use, including the ability to switch from Standard Movie and S&Q Motion modes via the press of a button. File naming is now similar to our high-end CineAlta cameras such as the FX9, VENICE and VENICE 2, to ensure easy workflow, especially in projects where the FX3/FX30 is used as a B- or C-cam iv.

The new firmware update also features smartphone connection and integrates with Sony’s new Creators’ Cloudv platform for individual content creators. Creators’ Cloud provides services and optimized applications from shooting to collaborating with creators around the world. This Creators' Cloud platform also includes Creators’ App, a content transfer mobile application from camera to cloud.

Pricing and Availability

The new FX3 Version 3.00 and FX30 Version 2.00 update will be available on April 11, 2023, at 9pm PT. Filmmakers can easily download the update directly to their camera using a PC or Mac. More details can be found HERE.

Notes:

It's Back: Sony a7 IV Firmware Version 1.1 Available, Enabling Lossless RAW File Options and Improved Accuracy and Operability https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=37400&Title=Sony-a7-IV-Firmware-Version-1-1-Available

"This update was originally released and then suspended on August 24, 2022, because some products could not operate properly after the update to Ver.1.10. However, the update has resumed with countermeasures, and we are happy to bring all of its added functionality to the Alpha 7 IV."

Note: "This update is executed via SD card/CFExpress card, and users will need to ensure the Alpha 7 IV is running or updated to Ver.1.05 first, before updating to v1.1. Instructions can be found in the links in the release."

Here is the original press release from Sony:

New Alpha 7 IV Firmware Update Enables Lossless RAW File Options and Improved Accuracy and Operability

SAN DIEGO, CA – August 23, 2022 – Sony Electronics Inc. today announced the v1.1 firmware update for the Alpha 7 IV full-frame mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, adding Lossless Compressed RAW in three sizes for still images, shutter speed and ISO setting retention, touch shutter function, improved Eye AF (autofocus) accuracy and more. ? ?

The update adds Lossless Compressed RAW files in S, M and L (small, medium or large) file sizes – a highly requested feature. Selecting L size preserves the same image quality as an uncompressed RAW format while significantly reducing the file size. The M and S sizes record fewer pixels than the L size, providing even smaller RAW file sizes.

Alpha 7 IV v1.1 allows photographers to retain shutter speed and ISO settings for flash photography. This newest update also offers a Touch Shutter Function and improves the accuracy of the Eye AF feature.

Other updates in the Alpha 7 IV v1.1 include:

  • The ability to record the camera's serial number in the metadata of video files
  • Improved operability of Wi-Fi connections
  • A one-minute setting added to Power Save by Monitor menu
  • The ability to brighten the viewfinder display according to the ambient brightness
  • Improved operational stability of the camera

New Alpha 1 Firmware Update Enables 8K 4:2:2 10bit Recording and Lossless RAW File Options

SAN DIEGO, CA – June 13, 2022 – Sony Electronics Inc. today announced the v1.3 firmware update for the flagship Alpha 1 full-frame mirrorless interchangeable lens camera, adding 8K 4:2:2 10bit recording and Lossless Compressed RAW for still images.

Using newly added 8K[i] 4:2:2 10bit capabilities, filmmakers and cinematographers can more precisely customize the vibrancy and color grading of their recordings. Combined with the Alpha 1’s 8.6K oversampling for extraordinary 8K resolution, the new addition of 4:2:2 10-bit recording lets filmmakers and content creators realize their creative vision with incredible realism and color.

The update also adds Lossless Compressed RAW files in S, M, and L (small, medium, or large) file sizes. Selecting L size preserves the same image quality as an uncompressed RAW format while significantly reducing the file size. The M and S sizes record fewer pixels than the L size, providing more manageable RAW files. With Alpha 1 v1.3, users can freely combine JPEG and their choice of Lossless Compressed RAW sizes based on their use case. This is especially beneficial with a user needs to deliver JPEG files immediately, but also needs RAW files for in-depth editing.

Sony Announces a9/a7R III/a7 III Camera Upgrades Through Major Firmware Updates https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=30282&Title=Sony-Announces-a9a7R-IIIa7-III-Camera-Upgrades-Through-Major-Firmware-Updates

SAN DIEGO, Jan. 15, 2019 -- Sony Electronics Inc. today announced a major upgrade to its a9 mirrorless camera that will be available via a firmware update.

Sony's revolutionary a9 camera will receive several major enhancements to its award-winning autofocus (AF) performance and image quality, as well as receive a variety of new features that are designed to improve the overall workflow for professional photographers. In addition, new firmware updates for a7R III and a7 III will be available that update these cameras with the latest enhancements including Real-time Eye AF performance and add interval recording capacities.

"These new firmware upgrades demonstrate the strong commitment that Sony has to our customers," said Neal Manowitz, vice president of Imaging Solutions at Sony Electronics. "Their voice is critical to everything we do, and being able to provide our customers with new capabilities is a source of great pride for Sony."

Firmware Ver. 5.0 and Ver. 6.0 for a9

The upcoming firmware version 5.0 for a9 adds Sony's newly developed Real-time Tracking mode for object tracking. This mode utilizes Sony's latest algorithm—including Artificial Intelligence-based object recognition—and processes color, subject distance (depth), pattern (brightness) as well as spatial (distance) information to ensure that all subjects can be captured with extreme accuracy and precision. When photographing or videographing humans or animals, face and eye position information is recognized by AI and the subject's eyei is monitored in real time with extremely high tracking precision. In addition, "Tracking On" helps initiate real-time tracking at any time by simply pressing a custom-assigned buttonii and "Touch Tracking," which quickly activates through the touch screenii.

With this new firmware version 5.0, Sony's acclaimed a9 camera will receive advanced "Real-time Eye AF," the latest version of Sony's acclaimed Eye AF technology. This exciting new capability employs AI-based object recognition to detect and process eye location data in real time, resulting in improved accuracy, speed and tracking performance of Eye AF. In all autofocus modes, the camera can automatically detect the eyes of the subject and activate Eye AF with a half press of the shutter button, and the camera will seamlessly track the eyes at all times when in AF-C mode. The new firmware will also enable photographers to select the preferred eye (left or right) of their subject as the focus point.

Other focusing capabilities that will be available with the new firmware include Touch Pad, Touch Tracking, an extended phase-detection AF aperture range that has been increased from F11 to F16, and Fast Hybrid AF for movie shooting that provides smooth, automated focusing for movies.

Image quality will also be enhanced with the new a9 firmware version 5.0, specifically in the areas of color reproduction. The camera will more accurately account for subtle changes in light for smoother, more natural tonal gradations in elements like the sky. There is a new auto white balance algorithm that gets added as well, which produces more consistently balanced images while burst shooting. Other new functions for efficient controls and data management include My Dial and Dual Slot media menu improvement, rating and protect functions.

In addition to the several new capabilities, the firmware also adds compatibility with Sony's new Imaging Edge Mobileiii application - the successor to the PlayMemories Mobile application. The new Imaging Edge Mobile application features a 'Transfer & Tagging add-on'iv function to assist professional workflow. This allows photographers to transfer images from their camera to their smartphone during capture using the FTP transfer functionalityv, and adds support for including IPTC metadatavi on transferred images.

Version 6.0 firmware for the a9 camera will add Eye AF for animal eyesi, an exciting new feature for wildlife photographers that will enable interval shooting functionality for creating time-lapse moviesvii.

The new system firmware update version 5.0 is scheduled for launch in March 2019, and version 6.0 is scheduled for Summer 2019.

Firmware Ver. 3.0 for a7R III and a7 III

Sony's popular a7R III and a7 III full-frame cameras will both receive enhanced Real-time Eye AF performance with the upcoming firmware version 3.0. This will be available in AF-C mode with a simple half-press of the shutter button. Real-Time Eye AF for animalsi will also be available.

The cameras will also receive interval recording functionality that will allow for simple creation of time-lapse moviesvii. The new feature can be set for anywhere between 1 and 60 seconds, with a total number of shots from 1 to 9999. AE tracking sensitivity can also be adjusted to "High", "Mid" or "Low" during interval recording, allowing for reduced changes in exposure over the shooting interval.

The new system firmware update version 3.0 is scheduled in April 2019.

i Accurate focus may not be achieved with certain subjects in certain situations
ii Function must be set via the menu beforehand
iii A successor application of PlayMemories Mobile. Existing PlayMemories Mobile users can use this by updating PlayMemories Mobile
iv Add-on mobile application for 'Imaging Edge Mobile'. Available countries: US/Canada/UK/France/Germany/Hong Kong/China/Australia/Japan. User registration is required to use this application.
v Compatible with ILCE-9 with firmware update Ver.5.0 or later, ILCE-7RM3, ILCE-7M3
