Sony Pixel Shift Multi Shooting .ARQ Files Now Supported in Adobe Camera RAW https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=24717&Title=Sony-Pixel-Shift-Multi-Shooting--ARQ-Files-Now-Supported-in-Adobe-Camera-RAW

Adobe quietly added support for Sony's Pixel Shift Multi Shooting .ARQ files in a recent update to ACR (Adobe Camera RAW). Unfortunately, the .ARQ files cannot be created in ACR, so you still need Imaging Edge to create the merged files. But once they're merged, you can edit them in ACR just like any RAW file.

Adobe Releases Lightroom CC and Classic CC Updates with Performance Improvements and New Features https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=24279&Title=Adobe-Releases-Lightroom-CC-and-Classic-CC-Updates-with-Performance-Improvements-and-New-Features

From the Adobe Blog:

Today we’re proud to release updates to the entire Lightroom CC ecosystem, including updates for Mac, Windows, Android, and iOS. We’ve optimized performance, added support for new cameras and lenses, and added some great new features for desktop and Android.

Our primary focus with this release was internal beauty, as we put a lot of effort into tuning and improving stability. In Lightroom CC on Mac and Windows, you’ll notice big improvements like moving to the next photo, grid scrolling, and exporting, while all apps have become a lot more stable. Download the latest updates via the Creative Cloud app and let us know what you think.

The February update includes other great features across the ecosystem:

LrCC desktop

Add copyright to imported images

The new Copyright preference (listed under Preferences -> General) enables you to automatically include your copyright on all photos added to Lightroom CC. All images added after you enable this preference will include your copyright.

LrCC Android

Geometry tab — premium editing features

Now the most powerful tools for correcting perspective distortion are available on a mobile device. Use the Auto Upright tools to automatically identify how to correct your photo or use the incredibly precise Guided Upright tool to take complete control over your photo. Additional control provided with the Geometry sliders helps you take the correction even further.

Available now on Android devices and coming soon to iOS.

Add watermark on export

First introduced for mobile on iOS and now available on Android, you can use the Watermark feature to add a text-based watermark when you share or save your photos. You can find this feature under the Preferences > Sharing Options menu.

Search your Lightroom library with Google Assistant — premium feature

Our Adobe Sensei-based search algorithms are now accessible from your phone’s home screen. Open the Google Assistant and, for example, say, “Search mountains in Lightroom” to launch Lightroom and find matching photos. This feature requires an internet connection and Android Marshmallow or later.

Add photos to Lightroom from your favorite apps

A new “Add to Lr” option is now available within the share sheet of your favorite apps, enabling you to send photos from another app directly into your Lightroom library, making it easier than ever to get all of your photos into Lightroom.

Adobe Releases Camera RAW 10 & DNG Converter 10 https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=21434&Title=Adobe-Releases-Camera-RAW-10---DNG-Converter-10-

From Adobe:

Camera Raw 10 is now available as a final release available in the Adobe Create Cloud desktop app.

Range Mask

Range Mask works within the structure of the existing local adjustment tools to give you more precision with your local adjustments. One way to think of it is that Range Mask is a modifier that can be applied to a local adjustment, allowing you to create more precise selections with less hassle. Range Mask is designed to be easy to use, and the resulting mask can be further refined by nudging the sliders.

Range Mask has two different modes to address two different types of color/tone-based masks: Color Range Mask and Luminance Range Mask.

Usage Instructions:

  1. Open an image into the Camera Raw plugin
  2. Select one of the local adjustment tools (Local Adjustment Brush, Graduated Filter, Radial Filter) and make an initial mask of your intended selection area.
  3. From the Range Mask option, select either Color or Luminance.
    • Color: Use the Eyedropper to select the colors you’d like to include in your selection. You can select up to 5 different colors using the Shift + click method with the eyedropper. Alternatively, you can sample a range of colors, even completely different colors, by dragging out an area with the eyedropper. Once selected, you can further refine your selection using the Amount slider.
    • Luminance: Use the Range and Smoothness sliders to adjust your mask and fine tune.

  4. Use the local adjustment sliders to make the desired edits to your images.
Check out Julieanne Kost’s video on the new Range Mask feature in Camera Raw 10.

Adobe Lightroom CC 2015.12/6.12 & Camera RAW 9.12 Now Available https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=20926&Title=Adobe-Lightroom-CC-2015-126-12---Camera-RAW-9-12-Now-Available

From Adobe:

The goal of this release is to provide additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Lightroom.

Today, we also released versions of Lr for iOS and Android that provide updated camera support. Check them out here.

A few clarifications for this release:

What happened to Lightroom CC 2015.11/6.11?

Lightroom and Adobe Camera Raw releases are tightly coupled as both products share the Camera Raw imaging technology. As a product team, we decided to skip Camera Raw version 9.11 and instead use 9.12 due to the unfortunate events that occurred on that day. In keeping our version naming consistent, Lightroom is releasing CC 2015.12 / 6.12.

Will performance enhancements that I requested via the survey here be in this release?

Lightroom CC 2015.12 / 6.12 does not include performance improvements based on your survey responses. We appreciate your candid feedback on Lightroom performance, and are working on several projects to address your concerns.

Adobe Releases Camera Raw 9.7 with Canon 5D IV Support https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=18962&Title=Adobe-Releases-Camera-Raw-9-7-with-Canon-5D-IV-Support

From Adobe:

Camera Raw 9.7 is now available through the update mechanism in Photoshop CC and the Creative Cloud application.

The goal of this release is to provide additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Camera Raw. This release also brings support for Pressure Sensitive tablets to Camera Raw.

Please note that this version of Camera Raw for Mac requires macOS 10.10 and greater.

Pressure Sensitive Support

A pressure sensitive pen is very useful for making precise adjustments using brush strokes within your images, and we’re excited to announce that Camera Raw 9.7 now provides support for pressure sensitive devices such as Wacom tablets and Surface Pros.

Pressure applied to the pen will affect the Flow slider within the Local Adjustment Brush. You can still set your flow to a maximum value, and then use your pressure sensitive pen to fine tune. Lighter pen strokes result in decreased flow, and heavier pen strokes increase flow.

We also support the erase mode if your pen supports this feature. Turning the pen over and using the “eraser” side will automatically switch the brush to eraser mode, as if you had held down the option key.

New Camera Support in Camera Raw 9.7

  • Apple iPhone 6s Plus
  • Apple iPhone 6s

If you are planning to use Dual Pixel raw files, please read Limitations with Canon Dual Pixel raw files in Camera Raw and Lightroom.

**We added new of Adobe Standard color profiles for the Canon EOS 5DS and Canon EOS 5DS R cameras. These versions are denoted as V2, and the v2 profiles have lower contrast than the original Adobe Standard (v1) camera profiles.

Adobe Camera Raw 9.4 Now Available https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=17601&Title=Adobe-Camera-Raw-9-4-Now-Available

Adobe has released its latest version of Camera RAW which includes a fix for the Sigma 50 ART misidentification bug as well as a new Boundary Warp feature. [Sean]

From Adobe:

Camera Raw 9.4 is now available through the update mechanism in Photoshop CC and the Creative Cloud application.

As mentioned in an update to our camera support policy here, Camera Raw 9.4 is only available in Photoshop CC or later. Customers using older versions of Photoshop can utilize the DNG Converter for continued camera support.

Introducing Boundary Warp

Stitched panoramas often have non-rectangular boundaries. There are several ways to handle irregular boundaries. The most common approach is to apply a rectangular crop. This is straightforward, but important image details near the boundary may be lost due to cropping. Another approach is to use Content Aware Fill (in Photoshop) to fill in the transparent areas outside the boundary. This can be effective, but may require multiple attempts to obtain a satisfying (smooth, artifact-free) result. It can also be expensive and requires rendering out the panorama to an output-referred format. Boundary Warp is a feature that provides another approach to handling the irregular boundary of panoramas. The feature analyzes the boundary and warps the image so that its edges fit a rectangular frame. Here’s a visual example of the feature:

  • Improved quality when applying Auto Straighten and Upright “Level” mode.

Fixed Bugs:

  • Improved quality of spot healing. Specifically, the improvement in image quality occurs in how the patched content is blended into its surroundings.
  • Fixed bug with panorama merge that could cause blend artifacts. This bug usually manifested as a highly darkened area and highly brightened area separated by a straight line (not necessarily associated with image content).
  • Fixed bug that caused variable-exposure panorama merges to appear over exposed.

Camera Raw and Adobe DNG Converter 9.0 Released https://www.the-digital-picture.com/News/News-Post.aspx?News=14960&Title=Camera-Raw-and-Adobe-DNG-Converter-9-0-Released

From Adobe:

Camera Raw 9.0 is now available as a final release through the update mechanism in Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CC.

As mentioned here, updates to Camera Raw for Photoshop CS6 only include new camera support, lens profile support, and bug fixes. The new features listed in the release notes are only available in Photoshop CC.

New Features

Merge to HDR and Panorama

Combine your photos to produce panoramas and HDR images in ACR. The merged result is a DNG file and is saved to disk alongside the input images. If you are merging raw files, then the merge is performed using raw image data and the resulting DNG is just as much a raw file as the originals (and retains all the editing flexibility that comes with shooting raw). Because of this, you no longer need to edit your photos before merging. To see the new Merge feature in action, check out these videos: Merge to Pano | Merge to HDR

Usage Instructions:

  1. To merge files in ACR, select the photos that you want to merge then press the “Merge…” button at the top of the filmstrip. Select “Panorama” or “HDR” from the pop-up menu.
  2. After a preview of the merge is generated, select desired options in the merge preview dialog and click the “Merge” button to start a full-size merge.
  3. The full-size merge is performed in the background so you can continue to edit other photos or start other merges while you wait. To view status, or cancel a merge, press the link in the lower left area of the main ACR window (it will say “1 remaining” if you’ve started a merge).
  4. Once the full-size merge is complete, the resulting DNG file will be added to the bottom of the filmstrip and be available for further editing.
  5. HDR deghosting has three amounts: low, medium, and high. In order to make it easier to select the best option for a given image, a visualization option is also available
Known issues:

  1. Color artifacts in deep shadow areas of some HDR merges with deghosting and HDR panorama merges.
  2. If the merged pano result is larger than ACR’s largest supported image size then you will get an error. In future builds we plan on adding an option to scale the result so that it’s within ACR size limits.
Performance Improvements

Camera Raw can now use the Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) to speed up interactive image editing. The GPU is particularly helpful when using high-resolution screens, such as 4K and 5K displays.

Minimum system requirements:

  • 64-bit only
  • Mac OS 10.9 and higher or Windows 7 and higher

Usage Instructions:

  • Ensure then GPU support is enabled by visiting the Camera Raw Preferences dialog and check the “Use Graphics Processor” box at the bottom.
  • When this box is checked, Camera Raw will automatically determine whether the system’s GPU (if any) can be used to accelerate image drawing. If yes, Camera Raw will display the name of your graphics card below the checkbox. Otherwise, Camera Raw will display an error message.
  • Note that the GPU options in Photoshop’s Preferences and Bridge’s Preferences have no effect on Camera Raw.
  • Camera Raw’s GPU implementation is used only to accelerate the drawing of the main preview image within the Camera Raw dialog. It is not used for other tasks, such as saving images to disk, or opening images into Photoshop.
  • Scrubby Zoom: Camera Raw offers a “Scrubby Zoom” option in GPU mode. With the Zoom tool selected, click on the Zoom menu (bottom-left of the image preview). Select “Scrubby Zoom” from the bottom of the menu to toggle scrubby zoom behavior on/off. When enabled, click-dragging on an image with the zoom tool will zoom smoothly in and out.

Bugs Corrected in Camera Raw 8.5

  • Fixed issue with Fujifilm X-T1 raw images appearing too bright at high ISO settings when using Dynamic Range 200% and 400%. Unfortunately, this fix may affect the appearance of existing images captured with this combination of settings. It is recommended that you (1) purge the Camera Raw cache via the Camera Raw Preferences dialog, and (2) review images shot at ISO settings higher than 1600 for unexpected brightness changes.
  • Fixed image quality issue (noisy result) when applying spot healing to floating-point (HDR) images.
  • Fixed issue with reading lossless compressed Nikon raw files (NEF files) from the camera models listed below. Previously, some images could be read but would appear as random noise, whereas attempting to open others would result in an error dialog. You will need to purge your Camera Raw cache via the Camera Raw Preferences dialog.

Known Bug

Customers using the Sony RX100 M3 and capturing images at ISO 125 may find the default rendering in ACR and Lightroom too dark. This is a known issue and we are working to improve this in a future update.
