Just released: Canon EOS 50D Firmware v1.0.7

"Firmware Version 1.0.7 incorporates the following changes.

1.Corrects a phenomenon where captured images may tend to appear somewhat magenta depending on the shooting scene.

2.Fixes incorrect indications on the Arabic, Romanian, Spanish, and Ukrainian menu screens.

Firmware Version 1.0.7 is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.0.6. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.0.7, it is not necessary to update the firmware."

Updated: Canon EF 800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lens Review

ISO 12233 chart results from the Canon EOS-1Ds Mark III have been added. I don't yet have an explanation for the grainy extender samples. I'm using a new (smaller) ISO 12233 chart for these (1600mm has a rather narrow field of view).

Think Tank Photo has announced a new series of bags called the Multimedia Wired Up Collection (press release).

Think Tank Photo Multimedia Wired Up Collection

According to Brian Erwin (TTP) ... "The world of digital photography is changing, as are the market conditions that are dictating how visual imagists make their living. At Think Tank Photo, we have been observing closely as still/video/audio morph technologically into new, complex ways of presenting information.

To meet these emerging needs, we have just launched the Multimedia Wired-Up Collection, the first integrated suite of bags designed to be wired together and used in tandem in the field to collect stills, video, and audio. Unlike most bags, that are designed to get gear into the field, these bags are meant to be used as a portable office that allows the imagist to keep their hands free to collect images and sounds."

Visit Think Tank Photo's home page for more information on the Multimedia Wired Up Collection or any of TTP's many other great products.

Coming soon: Canon Hybrid Image Stabilizer:

NEW CANON HYBRID IS WORLD’S FIRST IMAGE STABILIZER TO COMPENSATE FOR TWO TYPES OF CAMERA SHAKE

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., July 22, 2009 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, announced today the development of Hybrid Image Stabilizer (IS), the world’s first* optical image stabilization technology that compensates for both angle camera shake and shift camera shake. The technology will be featured in interchangeable single lens reflex (SLR) camera lens planned for commercial release before the end of 2009.

Several different preventative methods and corrective procedures have been introduced to compensate for errors caused by camera shake, which occurs when a camera moves while its shutter is open and its image sensor is exposed to light.

Canon began researching methods to compensate for camera shake in the 1980s, and in 1995 launched the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, the world’s first interchangeable SLR camera lens to feature a mechanism that compensates for optical camera shake. Since then, the company has continued to produce a variety of interchangeable lenses with image stabilization capabilities, and boasts a total of 21 such lenses in its current product lineup.

Canon’s newly developed Hybrid IS technology optimally compensates for angle and shift camera shake. Sudden changes in camera angle can significantly affect images taken during standard shooting, whereas shift-based shaking, which occurs when a camera moves parallel to the imaging scene, is more pronounced in macro photography and other close-range shooting.

The new Hybrid IS technology incorporates an angular velocity sensor that detects the extent of angle-based shaking and is found in all previous Canon optical image stabilizer mechanisms, as well as a new acceleration sensor that determines the amount of shift-based camera shake. Hybrid IS also employs a newly developed algorithm that synthesizes information from the two sensors to make optimal adjustments, thereby dramatically enhancing the effects of image stabilization during shooting, including macro shooting, which had proven difficult for conventional image stabilization technologies.

Canon is actively engaged in ongoing research and development of interchangeable SLR camera lenses incorporating Hybrid IS technology, and is aiming for the early commercialization and inclusion of the lenses in a wide range of products.

Vignetting results have been added to the upcoming Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L Tilt-Shift Lens Review and Canon TS-E 24mm f/3.5L II Tilt-Shift Lens Review.

Results are included for various tilt and shift settings including combinations of settings. Note that all vignetting tests are taken using evaluative metering. Certain tilt-shift settings have a significant affect on both vignetting and exposure. And there is a penalty to using the full tilt in conjunction with full shift in parallel orientation (this was no secret - Canon told us already). These test results should make these comments clear to you.

Great news! According to B&H Photo, the Canon USA Spring/Summer 2009 Rebate Program (sans DSLRs) has been extended by a month - to August 8th.

Dell XPS 730 PC - $1,595 shipped

I have been a long-time laptop user, but in late November 2008, I decided that I wanted a killer/loaded desktop system for performance reasons - and for a video card that could drive a 30" monitor at its maximum resolution. Truth is, I couldn't pull myself from the laptop, so this beautiful gaming/video-class PC has been practically unused.

This unit has spent its short life under my studio desk. Aside from a little dust, it is mint. And, with the "Aluminum with Clearcoat Chassis" and LED lights, it looks awesome. Note: this is not a small tower system (weighs over 63 lb).

Item Description
XPS 730, Intel Core2 Q9550 (2.83GHz,1333FSB) w/QuadCore and 12MB cache
4GB DDR3 SDRAM at 1067MHz
nVidia GeForce GTX 280 1024MB
750GB SATA HD(7200 RPM) w/16MBDataBurst Cache
Raid 0 with Dual 750GB Hard Drives (three 750GB hard drives total)
16X DVD-ROM and 16X DVD+/-RW (two drives)
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate, English, 32-bit (64-bit installed)
Dell USB Keyboard
Dell USB 4 Button Premium Optical Mouse with Scroll
Roxio Creator 10.2 Dell Edition
Integrated Audio (no speakers - I attached it into my Yamaha receiver)
1 Year Limited Warranty and Next Business Day, Desktop (started 12/1/2008)
Type 3 - Third Party At Home Service, 24x7 Technical Support, Initial Year
Copper Heat Sink

This system cost me $2,169.75 plus tax. The remainder of the Dell warranty should take care of any problems that arise, but it is working perfectly right now. Here is Dell's description of this system.

Sold: Gitzo G-1518 Mk2 Carbon Fiber Rapid Column - $69 shipped
I used this in a Gitzo G1548 tripod. In great shape but shows typical slide-marks. The G1518 typically sells for $150 new.

Sold: Canon EF-S 18-55mm IS Lens - $105 shipped
Lens is brand new / never opened (came with my T1i). Lens and caps only.

Sold: Canon 220EX Speedlite - $55 shipped
Includes case and manual.

Sold: Dell Ultrasharp 3008WFP 30" Wide HD/HDMI Flat Panel Monitor - $975 shipped

Incredible, like-new, barely-used. It is an amazing monitor that I am reluctant to part with. I purchased this monitor on 1/29/2008 (remainder of 3 year warranty in effect) to go with a loaded Dell XPS 730 gaming/photo/video-editing PC (next item), but never made the switch from my beloved laptop. The monitor was used very, very little and works/looks like new. I even kept it covered while not using it.

My laptop will not drive the full 2560 x 1600 resolution of this monitor. A Display Port or Dual Link DVI-D compatible video card is minimally required for this resolution. I am including the required Dual Link DVI-D cable (took 8 hours on the phone with tech support to discover that Dell does not ship this monitor with this DVI cable version). Here is Dell's description of this monitor.

ISO 12233 Sample Crops from the Canon TS-E 17mm f/4L Tilt-Shift Lens are online.

Included are results with the Canon EF 1.4x and Canon EF 2.0x Extenders along with +/- 6mm and 12mm shifted results.

Again, this lens looks impressive. Very low barrel distortion and CA with sharp corners at typical landscape apertures. Top-of-the-line build quality.
