Canon USA has issued a Service Notice regarding the Canon EOS 5D Mark II "Black Dots" Issue:

"Safety Notice: Image quality phenomena that appear under certain shooting conditions.

Thank you for using Canon products.

We have learned that some users of the Canon EOS 5D Mark II digital SLR camera have identified two types of image quality phenomena that appear under certain shooting conditions.

“Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
Vertical banding noise

We are currently investigating and analysing the causes, and examining measures to reduce or eliminate these phenomena by providing correction firmware. An announcement will be made on the Canon Web site when such measures have been determined.

Details of the phenomena and shooting conditions under which they are likely to occur are as follows.

“Black dot” phenomenon (the right side of point light sources becomes black)
When shooting night scenes, the right side of point light sources (such as lights from building windows) may become black. The phenomenon may become visible if the images are enlarged to 100% or above on a monitor or, if large prints of the images are made.

Vertical banding noise
If the recording format is set to sRAW1, vertical banding noise may become visible depending on the camera settings, subject, and background.
Vertical banding noise is not noticeable if the recording format is set to sRAW2.
Vertical banding noise does not occur if the recording format is set to RAW or JPEG.
Noise can be reduced if C.Fn II-3: Highlight tone priority is set to 0: Disable.

Canon always strives to provide the highest quality products to our customers. We apologize for any inconvenience these phenomena may have caused. We appreciate your kind patronage and support.

Canon USA has issued a "Safety Notice Update: Counterfeit Lithium-Ion Battery Packs and Chargers"

"It has been confirmed that counterfeit Canon lithium-ion batteries and chargers for Canon digital cameras and digital video camcorders are in circulation. In addition, it has been reported that counterfeit batteries have been considered the cause of some battery ruptures.

In many cases, counterfeit batteries and chargers are not equipped with protective devices required to meet international quality standards. Therefore, when these batteries or chargers are used or charged, they can cause abnormal heat or leakage, ignition, rupture and other malfunctions in the batteries, chargers, and digital cameras and video camcorders. There is concern that, in the worst case, not only could digital cameras and digital video camcorders be damaged, but fire, burns, blindness and other severe accidents could occur. Thus, to ensure customer safety, we urge our customers not to use counterfeit devices.

Please be advised that Canon is not responsible, and will not be liable, for any malfunctions, damages or injuries caused by non-Canon genuine lithium-ion batteries and/or battery chargers including, without limitation, counterfeit devices.

Recently, both in Japan and overseas, counterfeits of Canon's genuine lithium-ion battery packs and chargers have been frequently offered for sale on the Internet. Accordingly, please use caution when purchasing Canon lithium-ion battery packs and chargers on the Internet to ensure that they are genuine Canon brand.

Canon's genuine lithium-ion batteries have security labels on their packaging that identify them as genuine Canon products. When purchasing battery packs, please refer to this information. (See the following image for the labels.)

It's one thing to consider buying a 3rd party battery for our expensive DSLRs, but now we need to be careful even when buying Canon branded batteries. Purchase your Canon batteries from B&H, Amazon.com LLC (not a third party seller on this site) or Adorama with confidence.

I frequently get asked about buying third party batteries. While some may be good, I have not to this date purchased a non-Canon brand battery for any of my DSLRs. The one issue holding me back is that I've heard many reports of (at least some of) these batteries having short lives - meaning the value is not there. The other risk - that of a fire - risks costs far beyond the value of our expensive gear. That's where I am on this issue right now.

Think Tank Photo has announced the StreetWalker Backpacks.

More good information from Think Tank Photo: "In addition, our founder, Doug Murdoch, has published a new free white paper called “Active Shooting vs. Transportation/Storage.” [navigate to the news page for the PDF link]. As you know, Doug is one of the leading camera bag designers in history (he was the lead designer at Lowepro for many years before starting Think Tank three years ago). It is from this perspective that he wrote the paper: what type of camera bags do the pros use to fulfill different shooting challenges?"
