From DSLR Controller:

When DSLR Controller first came out on Android, it was the very first app on any mobile platform able to take full control of a DSLR using USB. Last year, it was the first to add the capability to use two phones or tablets, connecting one to the Canon EOS and using the other to control the rig over Wi-Fi. Early this year, it was also the first to add the capability to connect to WFT boxes and Wi-Fi equipped Canon EOS models using the full remote protocol (not the more limited smartphone protocol).

Now, it's time to announce the DSLR Controller Wi-Fi Stick. This combination of cheap off-the-shelf components (that you can also use for other purposes) and a customized version of the DSLR Controller software, adds a Wi-Fi module to any compatible Canon EOS camera. Easily the most requested feature, this extension allows you to fully control the camera over Wi-Fi using the DSLR Controller app on your Android device, the same as if it were connected over USB!

This build-it-yourself solution made up of an Android TV stick (CX-919), a power bank (USB battery) of choice and the DSLR Controller Wi-Fi Stick software, can be created for close to 100 USD. Another industry first for full remote control, beating most of the competition by 200 to 400 USD - wouldn't you rather put that money toward some more glass?

For the complete walkthrough, which components to get, where to get the software, and how to set it all up and use it, read our guide in the how-to section.

The-Digital-Picture.com Test Results:

I was already an owner of the DSLR Controller App and was highly interested in the DSLR Controller Wi-Fi Stick software. I had most of the components required, so I tried it out last night.

In short, everything worked as described. I loaded DSLR Controller on my Google Nexus 7 (original) and then installed DSLR Controller Wi-Fi Stick onto a rooted Rikomagic MK802 III Dual Core Android Mini PC I had lying around. I was able to control my Canon 7D (connected to the Rikomagic stick) via my Nexus 7.

When using my home Wi-Fi, the connection was fairly solid and the live view pushed to my Nexus 7 had a decent refresh rate. When using the Rikomagic to broadcast its own Wi-Fi network, the connection was a little buggy and the refresh rate was fairly slow. I realized the Android stick was lying close to the ground and probably affecting its performance. Once I hung the device from my tripod's center post hook (the thing you hang weight from to make your tripod more stable), my connection was much better. However, the refresh rate on live view still wasn't fast enough for smooth video, but it worked.

Here's a sample shot I created this morning:

DSLR Controller Wi Fi Stick Example

For the sample picture above, I used the following gear and apps:

I'm not 100% sure I'd depend on this setup if I only had one opportunity to get a shot. However, it does work - and it's probably the cheapest way to control your DSLR via Wi-Fi (if it isn't already built in, that is). And if nothing else, it's a great way to take pictures of skittish backyard wildlife! :-)

From Profoto:

Speedlights are great for many reasons, but being able to create a soft and shapable light is not one of them. Profoto offers a simple solution to this problem: a speedring that makes the Profoto RFi softboxes compatible with speedlights of most brands.

On November 1, 2012, Profoto released the RFi softboxes – a new line of softboxes comprising 12 sizes and four models. One of the most attention grabbing features of the RFi softbox line is the speedring adaptors that make Profoto’s softboxes compatible with well over 20 different flash brands.

Today, Profoto releases the latest addition to its assortment of speedring adaptors: a new and improved RFi Speedlight Speedring. The name clearly reveals what the tool does; it allows you to use an RFi softbox with speedlights, and thereby soften and shape the light.

But it does not end there. The RFi Speedlight Speedring allows you to mount not one but two speedlights on the bracket. This means that you now have enough power and punch to shoot in bright sunlight or light up an even larger softbox, such as the Softbox RFi 3x4’.

Each speedlight can slide and be tilted inside the softbox, allowing you to create a remarkably even light with no hotspot. The entire softbox can also be tilted, rotated 360° and adjusted high wise. In short, the RFi Speedlight Speedring allows you to shape the light however you see fit.

Also note that the RFi Speedlight Speedrings have color codes that match the RFi softbox rods. This makes the softboxes incredibly easy to mount, even for someone who has never used one before.

Last but not least, the RFi Speedlight Speedrings comes with an attachment for Profoto Air Remotes or radio sync units from other manufacturers.

The new RFi Speedlight Speedring is officially released on October 1.

When you cannot afford a filter for each of your lens filter sizes, a step-up filter adapter ring is what you need. This is a short review of a very useful product.

From Western Digital:

With New My Cloud Consumers Can Easily Save, Access and Share all of their Photos, Videos and Files from Any Device, Anytime – without Sacrificing Privacy

IRVINE, Calif. – Oct. 2, 2013 – WD, a Western Digital (NASDAQ: WDC) company and a world leader in storage solutions for the connected life, today introduced its new My Cloud family of personal cloud solutions. WD’s My Cloud is a complete solution for users to organize, centralize and secure the digital content from all of their computers and mobile devices and access those files from any device, from anywhere in the world. By simply connecting a My Cloud personal cloud drive to the Internet, consumers get the anywhere, any-device access they can get from the public cloud, without having to pay monthly fees or giving up control of their personal data.

“We believe that there’s no place like home for the cloud,” said Jim Welsh, executive vice president and general manager of WD's branded products and consumer electronics groups. “Everyone is inundated with thousands of digital files scattered across multiple computers and mobile devices, and controlling that chaos is a challenge. WD’s personal cloud is the easiest, most secure and most affordable way for customers to control that chaos, with access to all of their files anywhere, anytime.”

Research firm Gartner estimates that the average household will own approximately 3.3 terabytes (TB) of digital content by 2016. In line with this growth of digital content is the explosive growth of Internet-connected devices, with the current U.S. household owning 5.7 connected devices, according to The NPD Group. The convergence of rapid content and device growth requires a new storage paradigm that gives consumers complete control over their digital lives. Personal cloud storage is the new standard, allowing users to keep media and files safe at home on their own physical drive and then access them over the Internet with any PC or Mac computer or on tablets and smartphones through mobile apps. Using the My Cloud drive, users can share files, stream media and access content anywhere with no monthly fees and feel secure in the knowledge that their cloud resides in their own home under their exclusive control.

“Families are connecting, sharing, syncing, and backing-up numerous mobile devices and computers in their household, with the amount of digital data being created on these devices growing dramatically,” said Liz Conner, Senior Research Analyst, Storage Systems, IDC. “Personal cloud is an ideal solution to simplify the complex issue of organizing digital files across various devices so that users can enjoy their digital videos, photos and music on all of their devices.”

Streamlined Setup and Backup

Customers can get their personal cloud up and running in minutes with WD’s rich web-based user interface for seamless web-guided setup. WD's software auto-detects the drive to make setup simple for novice users. Once the My Cloud drive is setup, customers can easily connect their computers and mobile devices with WD's free desktop and mobile apps. With a Gigabit Ethernet connection and Dual-Core processor, transferring files is blazing fast, allowing customers to quickly centralize all of the digital content scattered across various devices onto My Cloud. With direct file uploads from mobile devices, important files and videos can be safely moved to My Cloud, freeing up valuable space on users’ tablets and smartphones.

Customers can also use their My Cloud to back up their computers and digital files. For PC users, WD SmartWare Pro software offers options for how, when and where to back up files. Mac users can utilize all the features of Apple Time Machine backup software to protect their data.

Complete Control

My Cloud users can store and organize their families’ photos, videos, music and important documents in one secure place on the home network. With the new My Cloud desktop app, navigating, controlling and sharing these files from anywhere in the world is simple and intuitive. My Cloud is available in 2 TB, 3 TB, and 4 TB capacities, providing bountiful storage capacity with no monthly payment required. Customers can also attach a compatible USB 3.0 hard drive directly to the USB expansion port on the My Cloud drive and instantly expand their storage capacity.

Additionally, My Cloud serves as a home’s digital entertainment hub, storing terabytes of movies and music that can then be streamed to any DLNA-certified multimedia device such as a WD TV Live media player, as well as smart TVs and gaming consoles.

Accessing the Personal Cloud

Available for iOS and Android devices, the new WD My Cloud mobile app allows users to view photos, stream video and access their files from anywhere on their smartphones or tablets. The mobile app also makes file sharing and collaborating simple and secure, allowing customers to easily email files, share files as a link, and print and open files with third party apps.

Additionally, the My Cloud mobile app integrates major public cloud services so that customers can easily transfer files between their Dropbox, SkyDrive and Google Drive public cloud accounts.

Price and Availability

The 2 TB and 3 TB My Cloud is currently available at select U.S. retailers. The 4 TB My Cloud is expected to be available in November. MSRP is $149.99 USD for 2 TB, $179.99 USD for 3 TB and $249.99 USD for 4 TB. The My Cloud mobile app currently is available for download from the App Store and Google Play. A two drive and four drive My Cloud configuration will be available in the future.

Yesterday, we posted an article by Canon Professional Network entitled, "Inside Lightroom 5 (Part 1): Modules and Importing". In the article, the first paragraph noted:

"Adobe’s Photoshop Lightroom 5 photo editing software now comes bundled on a DVD with two of Canon’s EOS DSLR cameras: the EOS 6D and the EOS 5D Mark III."

We asked a Canon Europe representative if this promotion would be expanded to the US market, and the representative replied:

"...this is a region specific promotion, only in Europe, which we are running in conjunction with Adobe."

So it looks like the European market is getting Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 5 for free when they purchase a 5D Mark III or 6D DSLR. That's a great promotional deal. Unfortunately, US customers won't be receiving the same deal - but they can always get Lightroom 5 from Adorama. ;-)

Preventing light from reaching the camera's imaging sensor sounds counterintuitive, but that is what you want a neutral density filter for.

From RØDE:

RØDE Microphones is excited to announce the next iteration of its field recording app for Apple’s iOS devices, RØDE Rec. This update, released to the app store today as a free upgrade, has a number of enhancements including a dedicated iPad interface, MP3 publishing and support for ten different languages.

RØDE Rec has been incredibly well received since its launch in January of this year, where it was the only app on the market to allow for recording at 24-bit/96kHz (using RØDE’s iXY stereo microphone).

This is the first update since RØDE acquired the FiRe app from creator Audiofile Engineering, and signals RØDE’s intention to provide not only the best field recording app for mobile devices, but a platform that rivals dedicated audio field recorders.

The update’s addition of a retina-compatible iPad interface enhances control on the larger device considerably. Users can now view the waveform, transport controls, non-linear editing and much more, all in the one screen making recording, editing and publishing a breeze.

The popular MP3 format has also been added, following overwhelming demand from existing users.

“While RØDE Rec is designed for the capture and sharing of broadcast-grade audio there’s no denying the popularity and indeed the convenience of the MP3 format.” explains Damien Wilson, RØDE’s Global Marketing & Sales Director.

“RØDE Rec is one of very few apps on iOS that supports MP3, and combined with one-touch sharing via dropbox and email it’s a great option when you want to share an audio grab quickly with friends, colleagues or clients.”

This updated version also marks the app’s debut in localised languages, with support for Spanish, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, Russian, Chinese (simplified), Japanese and Korean, in addition to English. The localised apps are available on the relevant international iTunes App stores.

An update to RØDE Rec LE, the free, feature-limited version of RØDE Rec will be released shortly, including the dedicated iPad interface and enhanced stability. Download the app now for iPhone, iPad or iPod touch on the iTunes App Store or via www.rodemic.com/getroderec

From Think Tank Photo:

Think Tank Photo today released the eighth in its "About A Photograph" video series. In it, photojournalist David Burnett, described by American Photo magazine as one of the "100 Most Important People in Photography," narrates the fascinating story behind his disturbing images of victims of Chilean president Augusto Pinochet’s brutal dictatorship.

Santa Rosa, CA – October 02, 2013 – Think Tank Photo today released the eighth in its "About A Photograph" video series. In it, photojournalist David Burnett, described by American Photo magazine as one of the "100 Most Important People in Photography," narrates the fascinating story behind his disturbing images of victims of Chilean president Augusto Pinochet’s brutal dictatorship. The video interview can be found at http://aboutaphotograph.com.

Burnett sensed the "sixtieth of a second" when the eyes of "The Man In The Picture" (as the photo soon became known) caught Burnett’s and history was captured. The image ran in magazines and newspapers around the globe soon thereafter.

"There can be a moment when a photograph almost transcends the public moment and becomes something very private within that space," said Burnett. "I’d love to take a picture of him now. But more importantly, I’d love to shake his hand."

Burnett is a photojournalist with more than four decades of work covering the news, the people, and visual tempo of our age. He is co-founder of Contact Press Images, the New York based photojournalism agency now entering its 37th year. In July, 2011, David worked with Photographers for Hope to create a workshop for homeless news vendors in Glasgow, Scotland. He is also collaborating with the group "Facing Change - Documenting America" which is trying to recreate a modern version of the FSA, and take a serious look at the issues facing the country during these turbulent economic times.

From Profoto:

We do not need tell you why collapsible reflectors are great. Every photographer knows that (affordable, lightweight, easy to use, etc.). But what you most probably did not know is that Profoto now makes them.

Profoto’s Collapsible Reflectors stand out from the crowd. First of all, the sturdy yet collapsible squircle-shaped metal frame is equipped with two ergonomically shaped handles, which makes the reflectors much easier to fold and hold in various positions.

Secondly, Profoto's Collapsible Reflectors are designed with high-quality fabrics and the frame itself is far tougher and durable than the average reflector.

Last but not least, Profoto's Collapsible Reflectors are available in no less than ten different versions. Four types of two-sided Reflectors are available: Silver/White, Sunsilver/White, Gold/White & Matte Black/White. There is also a translucent screen available to be used as a diffuser. Each of these is available in two sizes: Medium (80 cm /32’’) and Large (120 cm /47”).

In short, it is now easier than ever before to obtain your first piece of Profoto gear, and those who are already familiar with the brand can expand their set of Profoto tools with a powerful and cordless continuous light source – also known as the sun.

The Profoto Collapsible Reflectors are officially released on October 1.
