In a press release issued today, Canon UK has announced the EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS II Lens.

Europe-only? Canon USA has said nothing about this new lens - I'm inquiring.

Update: At this time, Canon USA has no information about the availability of this lens in the US.

"When is the Canon EOS 5D Mark III going to be announced?" is the big question hitting my inbox these days. And that is a good question - one that Canon has not answered publicly.

Last year, my guess was that the EOS 5D Mark III would be announced in August 2011 with availability in December. The reasoning behind this answer was that the Canon EOS 5D Mark II was announced 3 years after the Canon EOS 5D and August is historically the month of one of Canon's biannual major DSLR, lens and flash announcements. The 5D II became available in December (to those who preordered early).

Today, I'm much less optimistic about seeing a 5D Mark III this year.

Why?

First, the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark IV announcement did not happen in its historical timeframe (August 2010) - and has not happened to date. I expect the Canon EOS 1Ds Mark III to be updated before the EOS 5D Mark II.

And second, the disaster in Japan was hugely disruptive. Details of Canon's recovery have been absent lately, but I have not been hearing any optimistic news coming from the affected area. I'm happy that we can still buy most current Canon DSLRs and lenses.

So back to the question: "When is the Canon EOS 5D Mark III going to be announced?" As with the rest of Canon's unannounced products, no one who knows is allowed to say. My complete guess is that we will not see an upgrade to the 5D II available until at least mid-2012.

The advice I've been giving is to get the incredibly successful Canon EOS 5D Mark II now. It has impressive image quality and you will most likely get a LOT of great shots from it before even my last-year-estimated 5D Mark III arrival date.

Canon has today unveiled a trio of new video lenses. While not for the DSLR market, the new lenses are interesting to learn about nonetheless. The new Canon KJ20x8.2B is particularly interesting with its built-in 2x extender.

Canon U.S.A. has announced its expansion into the production photographic print market with the introduction of the Canon DreamLabo 5000 (press release).

Don't look for one of these in my studio anytime soon. Of course, with availability expected to be early 2012, don't look for one of these anywhere other than a trade show for awhile.

Following is the list of the new Canon gear announced today. These links are to the review placeholder pages where product images, links to the Canon USA and Europe press releases and Amazon.com preorder links can be found.

What we get is a pair of more-advanced Rebel bodies (the T3i gets the Vari-Angle LCD), a tweaked kit lens, a formal announcement for the 500 II and 600 II lenses, a pair of flashes with some unique capabilities, and ... though it is not exactly the Canon EF 500mm f/5.6 L IS USM Lens on my Canon Christmas list, the awesome-looking 200-400 f/4 L IS with a built-in 1.4x does indeed get us there in a very unique way - and adds zoom. I did not include a Canon EF 200-400 f/4 L IS USM Lens on my list, but it is also one of my most-wanted lenses.

Canon Japan is offering a Locking Mode Dial Upgrade (English) for owners of Canon EOS 7D and Canon EOS 5D Mark II DSLRs.

Starting December 8th, 2010, Canon Japan will convert 7D and 5D II mode dials into the locking type seen on the Canon EOS 60D for $10,500 yen (about $125.00 USD). There is no information at this time on other Canon divisions offering this service.

Update: Canon Canada has now announced this service:

Thank you for using Canon products.

Effective Dec 1st 2010, Canon will start to provide as a chargeable service, a locking mode dial modification for the “EOS 5D MarkII” and “EOS 7D” digital single-lens reflex cameras.

This modification is available, for a fee, to owners of these cameras who would prefer a Mode Dial which locks in place and can’t be accidentally moved during normal camera operation.

For Canadian residents, the pricing of the locking mode dial modification service for EOS 5D Mark II and 7D cameras has been set at $110 per camera as of December, 2010. (Pricing and availability subject to change without notice.) For further details, see contact information for inquiries below.

Once modified, users must first press and hold down the central lock-release button in order to turn the Mode Dial. The modification is intended to prevent the Mode Dial from accidentally moving, once set to a particular exposure mode by the user.
