From Adobe:

Creative Cloud Photography Program Now Includes Photoshop, Lightroom and Lightroom Mobile for $9.99 per Month; Seamlessly Syncs Edits Between Mobile and Desktop

April 08, 2014 – SAN JOSE, Calif. Adobe today announced the availability of Lightroom mobile, a companion app to Lightroom desktop software, only available as part of Adobe Creative Cloud. The new Lightroom mobile app brings powerful Lightroom tools to the iPad, delivering photography essentials – such as non-destructive processing of files – and utilizing new Smart Preview technologies to free professional-class photo editing from the confines of the desktop. Lightroom mobile is built on a powerful synchronization architecture, designed specifically for photos, and provides the most efficient way to manage and edit images across desktops, mobile devices and the Web.

Lightroom mobile is available as part of the Adobe Creative Cloud Photoshop Photography Program. For USD$9.99 per month, photographers have access to Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CC on the desktop as well as Lightroom mobile on iPad.

“With the launch of Lightroom mobile, we’ve unlocked professional-class photographic workflows from the confines of the desktop,” said Winston Hendrickson, vice president products, Creative Media Solutions, Adobe. “Lightroom and Photoshop redefined digital photography on the desktop and now, photographers can perfect images, wherever they are and, via Creative Cloud, seamlessly synchronize them back to their desktop catalog.”

Lightroom mobile and the photography optimized synchronization architecture puts the powerful tools from Lightroom 5 at photographer’s fingertips, including:

  • Sync mobile edits, metadata and collection changes back to the Lightroom catalog on a Mac or Windows computer
  • Automatically import images captured on an iPad and sync back to a Lightroom catalog on the desktop
  • Work on images, even when your iPad is offline, for a truly portable experience
  • Sync photos between Lightroom 5 and Lightroom mobile; synced photos can also be viewed from any Web browser

“Adobe Lightroom mobile transforms the way I am able to work with my photographs because now I can review and process photos when I’m comfortable and creative, and not just when I’m at my computer,” said Jeff Carlson, educator and author of The iPad for Photographers and Adobe Lightroom mobile: Your Lightroom on the Go. “It also works as a malleable photo portfolio on my iPad. As I add or remove images from a collection in Lightroom mobile or on the computer, the changes stay synchronized. When I need to show my work those photos are already set up to be viewed.”

Pricing and Availability

The Photoshop Photography Program (USD$9.99 per month) includes Lightroom 5, Photoshop CC, Lightroom mobile and a public portfolio site through Behance. Any members of Creative Cloud complete plan or Photoshop Photography Program automatically receive access to Adobe Lightroom mobile. Lightroom mobile is immediately available for iPad 2 or later running iOS 7, from the Apple App Store and requires Lightroom 5.4 for Mac or Windows.

Adobe has extended their Photoshop Photography Program deal. That's Photoshop CC, Lightroom 5 and the newly announced Lightroom Mobile App for only $9.99 per month with no previous ownership requirements (offer valid through May 31).

I really enjoy Profoto's "Light Shaping with Andrea Belluso" series. In this video, Belluso demonstrates different ways for using the Profoto WideZoom Reflector for portraiture.

I don't typically use such hard lighting for shooting portraits, but Belluso's work has me reconsidering my techniques. [Sean]

Integrated color management tools for imaging professionals seeking an all-in-one solution

Lawrenceville, NJ – April 7, 2014 – Datacolor, a global leader in color management solutions, today announced SpyderHD, the premiere color calibration suite for advanced and professional photographers and videographers. SpyderHD is designed to color manage photo and video workflows, from scene, camera and editing, to final output.

SpyderHD includes the new Spyder4ELITE HD integrated display calibration application; the first of its kind, with calibration functions for computer displays, video reference displays, and TVs, all within a single application. SpyderHD also includes the innovative SpyderWEB, a universal mounting system that securely mounts the Spyder for calibration of most screens up to 70”.

“As a photographer who has been calibrating for a long time, I understand the value of color calibration. SpyderHD is my preferred solution for tonal linearity in computer display calibration, and beats my personal calibration technique for video reference display calibration,” says Lee Varis, renowned Hollywood photographer.

In addition to display calibration offerings, SpyderHD includes two important camera solutions: the SpyderCHECKR, a powerful color reference and gray card system, and the portable SpyderCUBE, which provides white balance, exposure, black level and highlight references in any lighting condition. Combined, these tools enable photographers and videographers to capture consistent color day-to-day and camera-to-camera, enhancing their entire digital workflow.

“There is nothing else like the SpyderCUBE; the value of it is hard to over-emphasize for defining the light sources in a shot,” continued Varis. “Also, I find the SpyderCHECKR to provide all the camera color correction I need, for both photo and video.”

SpyderHD is available immediately for $349.00 USD at photo and video retailers. For more information, visit www.datacolor.com/spyder-hd-pr.

From Red Giant:

AVCHD and Canon XF support. Faster import. PluralEyes integration.

Today, Red Giant announced BulletProof 1.2, an update that brings more camera support and other improvements to its footage backup and preparation tool.

Bruce Sharpe, Shooter Suite business unit manager said, “Last year at NAB, we released BulletProof - a product that we knew had the potential to become an essential tool for shooters. This year, we’ve updated it to support the AVCHD and Canon XF format, two formats that are a mainstay of the industry.”

In addition to the existing support for Canon and Nikon DSLRs and GoPro cameras, BulletProof now includes support for Panasonic and Sony DSLRs, and for the Canon C-series and XF-series cameras.

BulletProof is designed to solve several challenges that, since the DSLR revolution, have plagued shooters, both on set and right before post-production. One of those challenges is the issue of reliable backup.

“Shooters work under extreme time pressure while on set,” said Randon Morford, Shooter Suite product manager. “Reliable file backup is often considered a luxury. At best, most shooters simply copy their footage to a hard drive, blazing on with their shoot and hoping for the best. Too often, however, the data is corrupt and doesn’t make it to the timeline. We designed BulletProof to make sure that never happens.”

BulletProof, which boasts robust automated backup and verification tools, allows shooters to do what they are already doing, but with confidence. Once the camera card is in the card reader, BulletProof creates copies of your footage and verifies them to ensure a perfect duplication. In addition, while the footage is being backed up, the shooter can use BulletProof’s GPU-accelerated playback tools to review the footage and make sure they got the shots they need.

Also new to BulletProof is a highly requested feature called “Add Mode” - a reference mode that speeds up the import process by cataloging media that has already been copied to disk.

While BulletProof's features start with backup and review of footage on set, it also addresses the next area of pain in the shooter’s process - preparing the footage and notes for post-production. BulletProof includes powerful tools for tagging, adding metadata, notes, in-and-out points, and even suggested color correction to the footage - all to help bring the shooter’s intention over to the timeline. These features can be used right on set or once the shooter gets back to the edit suite.

In addition, BulletProof is now integrated with PluralEyes, Red Giant’s hugely popular automated audio/video sync tool. One of the editing industry’s most popular tools, PluralEyes literally saves hours or days of audio/video syncing work, with the touch of a button. BulletProof now makes the process even more fluid by sending the footage over to PluralEyes in an organized way, so that you can sync your footage immediately. Once synced, PluralEyes sends the footage directly to the editing timeline, ready for editing.

“Since PluralEyes allows the shooter to work more freely on set by not having to worry about timecode or clapboards,” said Sharpe, who also created the app, “it seemed like a natural progression to have our footage backup and prep tool integrated with the next tool in the production chain.”

“For the last year we have been singularly focused on making BulletProof a better tool for people working on set and in the edit bay,” added Morford. “We’re proud to offer a product that lets the shooter work with the confidence that comes with knowing that their footage will make it home safe, sound and in sync.”

Pricing & Availability

BulletProof 1.2 beta will be available soon, with a release in Q2 for $199. It is a free upgrade for existing users of BulletProof 1.0.

B&H carries Red Giant's BulletProof software.

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 2, 2014 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, shared today that its parent company, Canon Inc., announced a software upgrade for the EOS C500 digital cinema camera (launched in October 2012), part of Canon’s Cinema EOS System lineup of professional digital cinematography products, that will enable users to more efficiently on-set production workflows. The Company plans to offer the free-of-charge Cinema RAW Development software upgrade* starting in October 2014.

The new Cinema RAW Development 1.3 software, currently under development, will deliver enhanced shooting workflows, including the on-set playback and confirmation of 4K RAW video, when using the EOS C500 camera.

Through collaboration with Intel, Cinema RAW Development 1.3 will deliver improved performance using a beta version of the Intel Media SDK 2014 Professional Camera Pack, making possible faster development of 4K Cinema RAW data when using a PC equipped with Intel Iris Pro graphics. Canon’s software upgrade will support greater workflow efficiencies for 4K RAW data by enabling real-time playback with playback speeds of up to 24 frames per second (fps). To date, previewing 4K RAW video footage on a notebook PC and other compact computer devices had been difficult because of the slow fps rate and the need for tremendous processing power, which was only available with a workstation PC. Now, with a combination of upgrades to Canon’s Cinema RAW Development 1.3 software, compatible with the Intel Media SDK 2014 Professional Camera Pack, and a PC with Intel Iris Pro graphics, Canon users will be able to more quickly preview their 4K video footage while on a shoot.

Major Updates and New Features Turbo-charge Video Workflows, Outpacing the Competition

April 02, 2014 – SAN JOSE, Calif. – Adobe today announced plans to significantly update all the video apps in Adobe Creative Cloud and will showcase these innovations at the NAB 2014 show in Las Vegas next week. Milestone feature additions, expected to ship in the next coming months, include major updates to Adobe Premiere Pro CC and Adobe After Effects CC, designed to make everyday tasks easier and faster, enabling video professionals to create stunning videos, TV shows, films and commercials more efficiently. At NAB Adobe is also unveiling new features for Adobe Anywhere, the collaborative workflow platform that empowers teams using Adobe professional video apps to work together as they access and manage centralized media and assets across virtually any network.

“We do an immense amount of green screen work and the new Keying effects in Adobe After Effects CC will help us preserve fine details when we’re keying out backgrounds and control the amount of green spill left in an image so we can work faster and more precisely.”

Underscoring the rapid adoption of Adobe Creative Cloud tools in the broadcast and film industries, Adobe is also proud to announce that two-time Academy Award-winning editor Kirk Baxter A.C.E. is cutting David Fincher's upcoming feature film “Gone Girl” exclusively with Adobe Premiere Pro CC.

At the NAB 2014 show, Adobe will provide a sneak peek of the innovative magic coming soon to the company’s professional video apps. Key updates include:

  • Timesaving editorial features in Premiere Pro CC. New features include Live Text Templates that let users edit text in After Effects CC compositions directly in Premiere Pro CC; Autosave to Creative Cloud for automated backup of projects; and a new Masking and Tracking feature that provides accurate masks that follow subjects and blur out faces and logos, crucial for newsroom editing. In addition, the new Master Clip effect in Premiere Pro and SpeedGrade changes the effects applied to original clips and ripples down through all instances of the clip.
  • Powerful new updates to After Effects CC include Keying effects to provide better keying results with compressed footage; and Typekit integration with Premiere Pro CC and After Effects CC provides users with access to a growing library of fonts worth $30,000, that can be used on the desktop.
