From SanDisk:

LAS VEGAS, January 6, 2014 – SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK), a global leader in flash storage solutions, today announced the 64GB SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drive in advance of the 2014 Consumer Electronics Show. The drive extends SanDisk’s popular and award-winning line of wireless flash memory storage products, offering users even more wireless memory expansion for their mobile devices. In addition, recently released software updates enhance the performance and functionality of both the SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drive and Wireless Media Drive.

The SanDisk Connect line of products is designed to alleviate storage capacity limitations that consumers experience with their mobile devices. Data from the SanDisk Memory Zone memory management app for Android devices, which recently surpassed 1.5 million downloads, indicates 44 percent of users have less than half of their mobile device’s internal storage capacity free, and nearly one quarter of users are at more than 80 percent utilization. The data also shows that when memory utilization reaches 80 to 90 percent, users proactively make space available by deleting or removing content.

“We are addressing a common problem of consumers running out of memory on mobile devices, and are extending our Connect product line with a 64GB Wireless Flash Drive for access to even more videos, photos, music, and documents on-the-go,” said Dinesh Bahal, vice president, product marketing, SanDisk. “With the SanDisk Connect products, consumers can expand the memory on their phones and tablets, stream movies, and share photos and documents with colleagues, friends and family with ease and style.”

The SanDisk Connect product line enables consumers to wirelessly stream and store content on-the-go without Internet access. In addition to the release of the 64GB SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drive, SanDisk has been continuously updating the software to improve performance and accessibility of the drive while keeping a cellular data connection. For the Wireless Media Drive, updates also include a web app that enables wireless access from PCs and Mac computers, as well as Windows 8 based tablets, and the ability to play back movies purchased on iTunes.

Pricing and Availability
The 64GB SanDisk Connect Wireless Flash Drive is available at an MSRP of $99.99 in the U.S. on Amazon.com and B&H. It will also be available in select countries in Europe in the coming weeks.

From Think Tank Photo:

Our newest About A Photograph video features the story behind noted music photographer Adam Elmakias’s poignant image of Suicide Silence’s late vocalist Mitch Lucker and his daughter in a private moment together backstage. In the video, Elmakias narrates how this photo altered not only his creative viewpoint, but his understanding of the role of photojournalism in creating and capturing events for history. The video can be found at http://blog.thinktankphoto.com/about-a-photograph/

In Adam’s words: “I sort of took the moment for granted. But I had never had someone pass away after taking their photograph. It opened up a whole new area for me. A lot of the artists I work with wonder, ‘What is this photograph going to do for us in 20 years? It doesn’t mean we have to publish or use it now, but can save it so that we have everything we’ve done documented.’”

Adam is a music and travel photographer based out of San Diego California. He has spent the good majority of the past five years traveling with bands on the road. They include A Day to Remember, Alan Ashby, All Time Low, Neil Westfall, Of Mice & Men, and Pierce the Veil.

The smaller and lighter lens (15.2 ounces and 2.8x3.4 inches versus 17.3 ounces and 3x3.5 inches) now macro capabilities with a minimum focusing distance of 15.4 inches and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:3, as opposed to the lens’ earlier minimum focusing distance of 17.7 inches and max magnification ratio of 1:3.8. Its minimum working distance is 14.7 inches, which makes the lens suitable for close-up shooting with natural light, keeping shadows of the camera and lens out of the image.

The 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 Macro has also been updated to incorporate Special Low Dispersion (SLD) glass elements that have a high refractive index and can correct chromatic aberration at the telephoto-end. Moreover, aspherical lens elements, including double-sided aspherical lenses, will ensure a compact size and excellent correction of distortion.

The new Sigma 50mm F1.4 DG HSM Art has been reengineered and redesigned to set a new standard of performance in the Art line. A staple focal length, the new Sigma 50mm F1.4 Art is a pro level performer for full-frame DSLRs great for many different types of photography including portraits, landscapes, studio work and still-life. It has been updated to include SLD glass and optimized for rich peripheral brightness with improved large aperture performance by positioning wide elements into the front groups. Other updates include an optimized autofocus algorithm for smoother focusing and a floating focusing system to reduce lens movement while focusing. Under the Global Vision line, it features a new matte finish, improved AF on/off switch and guarantees every lens is tested with Sigma’s proprietary modulation transfer function (MTF) “A1” measuring system before being shipped. Now with 13 elements in 8 groups compared to the previous 8 elements in 6 groups, it also has improved close focusing at 15.7 inches and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:5.6

Both lenses incorporate Sigma’s Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) system to produce quiet, high-speed auto focus. In addition, they include Super Multi-Layer Coating to reduce flare and ghosting, and to ensure high-quality images throughout the entire zoom range. The 18-200mm F3.5-6.3 DC Macro OS HSM and 50mm F1.4 DG HSM lenses are also compatible with Sigma’s USB dock and the company’s Mount Conversion Service.

Other recently announced lenses and accessories such as the 24-105mm F4 DG OS HSM, 18-35mm F1.8 DC HSM | ART and USB Dock will be on display at Sigma’s CES booth. Visit Sigma at CES 2014 at booth 10431in Central Hall at the Las Vegas Convention Center from Jan. 7 to 10.

The latest addition to the site is the Flash Specifications Comparison tool.

Use this tool to compare any recent Canon flash model to any other recent Canon flash model. Use the comparisons to assist your purchase decision-making process. Share flash comparisons with your friends and forums. Or just compare flashes for the fun of it.

For a specific example, I'll preload a comparison that I am looking at right now: the Canon Speedlite 600EX-RT Flash compared to the Canon Speedlite 580EX II Flash.

You will find a link to this tool under the "Tools" menu option, on the Tools page and in the individual Flash Reviews.

As always, let us know if you see any errors/omissions or have ideas for improving the tool.

MELVILLE, N.Y., January 6, 2014 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the addition of two new cameras to its PowerShot line-up: The PowerShot SX600 HS and the PowerShot ELPH 340 HS digital cameras. The PowerShot SX600 HS camera packs an impressive 18x optical zoom and 16-Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor into a beautifully sleek, compact and portable body so capturing close-up photos with high-image clarity is easy and stylish. The PowerShot ELPH 340 HS camera offers outstanding optical performance and versatility with a 12x optical zoom lens and16-Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor. Both equipped with Wi-Fi and Near Field Communication (NFCTM) capabilities, photographers can have outstanding image quality and the ability to share images and video with ease.

“These new PowerShot cameras enhance consumers’ enjoyment of photography through the unique combination of high-image quality, long-zoom ranges, ease-of-use and connectivity,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The advanced technologies these new models offer give users the cameras they need to have a photographic experience that allows them to capture high-quality images while on-the-go and share them with their loved ones.”

The Wi-Fi connectivity options in the PowerShot SX600 HS and the PowerShot ELPH 340 HS cameras allow users to easily share beautiful images online with family and friends. Using the Mobile Device Connect Button, users can connect to a compatible smartphone, a compatible tablet or a computer. Connection to the computer is easily done using Canon’s Image Sync through the cloud. For the first time in Canon’s line-up, both cameras have the convenient connectivity of NFC offered on AndroidTM devices. With NFC, users press the Mobile Device Connect Button and tap their NFC-enabled Android device to the SX600 HS or ELPH 340 HS camera to send images from the camera to their compatible smartphone with ease. For even more convenience, photographers can control the camera remotely via the free Canon Camera Window app1 from virtually anywhere with their iOS or Android device2. After composing the image, the photographer controls the shutter from their compatible smartphone, so that the photographer can be included in the shot.

Another first for the PowerShot SX and ELPH lines is Creative Shot mode. First introduced on the PowerShot N digital camera, Creative Shot mode is an easy yet powerful tool to add artistic effects to photos. In Creative Shot mode, users compose a shot and let the camera analyze the photo to apply a series of artistic elements. Creative Shot mode includes four categories with 46 filters total. The four filter categories are: Retro, Monochrome, Special, and Natural. Before an image is captured, users choose one of the four filter types and Creative Shot will automatically render five different variations of the shot in different composition, color and lighting styles, delivering creative new perspectives automatically while still maintaining the original image.

The cameras can also capture great video, recording high-quality 1080p Full HD video through a dedicated movie button. The Hybrid AUTO mode allows you to record up-to four seconds of video every time you shoot a still image, and then automatically joins the clips and pictures into a video that captures the essence of a vacation, an important event, or any time you are shooting many shots in a day. Hybrid Auto automatically recognizes the scene and optimizes camera settings to capture the highest possible image quality creating a great looking highlight reel in a 720p HD video.

The PowerShot SX600 HS Digital Camera
In addition to enhanced connectivity and artistic options, the PowerShot SX600 HS camera features a long-zoom range in a compact point-and-shoot camera body. Equivalent to 25-450mm, the SX600 HS camera’s powerful 18x optical zoom provides users with the high-quality optics the pocket-sized Canon PowerShot SX camera series is known for. The SX600 HS camera combines a 16-Megapixel CMOS sensor and Canon’s DIGIG 4+ Image Processor to create the Canon HS SYSTEM allowing for excellent low-light performance.

The PowerShot SX600 HS digital camera is expected to be available at the end of February 2014 in red, white or black for an estimated retail price of $249.99.

The PowerShot ELPH 340 HS Digital Camera
The PowerShot ELPH 340 HS digital camera, successor to the ELPH 330 HS, features a 12x optical zoom lens which is equivalent to 25mm-300mm. Great for low-light scenes, the 16-Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and DIGIC 4+ Image Processor work together to create the Canon HS SYSTEM helping to ensure images are captured in detail in dimly lit situations.

The PowerShot ELPH 340 HS is expected to be available in March 2014 in purple, silver or black for an estimated retail price of $199.99.

From Canon USA:

The PowerShot N100 Features an Innovative and New Dual Capture Mode and Story Highlights Mode

MELVILLE, N.Y., January 6, 2014 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced the addition of a new concept camera to its PowerShot lineup: the PowerShot N100 digital camera. Featuring a new body style and unique, new creative options, the PowerShot N100 camera helps users create and tell their visual stories by allowing the photographer to become part of the image being captured. With the innovative and new Dual Capture mode, users can simultaneously capture special moments using the Main Camera, while the Story Camera, a rear facing sub-camera, will embed a picture of them onto the main image.

To help people create unique images that tell a story, the PowerShot N100 camera offers the new Story Highlights mode. Story Highlights mode intuitively creates a highlight reel of images and video* to create a customized movie that tells a story as seen through the photographer’s eyes – all done within the camera. No longer will a photographer need to use additional software to assemble this footage.

“Canon is continually working to discover new ways for end-users to combine high-image quality and creativity in a technologically advanced compact camera,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “The new PowerShot N100 is a unique digital camera designed to not only create high-quality images and video, but also capture the feelings of the photographer at the moment they take a picture.”

Become Part of the Story
Remembering a child’s first birthday and the parents’ excitement during that memorable moment can now be captured with the innovative Dual Capture mode featured in the PowerShot N100 digital camera. Easy to access and use, Dual Capture mode creates a picture-in-picture effect by simultaneously capturing the subject in the framed shot while the Story Camera, a rear-facing sub-camera, takes an image or video of the photographer as they take the picture. The PowerShot N100 camera then combines both shots into one distinctive photo or video combination. The images captured using the Story Camera can be placed in four different locations on the main image and in three different sizes at the photographer’s discretion.

Capture Your Story
To help create even more share-worthy memories, the PowerShot N100 digital camera features an artistic mode to help users creatively capture images and movies. Story Highlights mode works within the camera to create a highlight reel of selected images or movie digest clips creating a unique imaging experience. The images can be selected automatically based on events, the date they were taken, by people utilizing Face ID, or the selection can be customized based on photos hand-picked by the user. As a result, the moments that are most precious to the user are intuitively combined, allowing for complete highlights of the images taken from a friend’s wedding day or a child’s first ride on a new bicycle. The final created movie will last approximately two minutes from the automatically selected pictures and videos, or if the files were selected by the photographer, it will last a maximum of five minutes.

Share Your Story
With enhanced Wi-Fi capabilities, the creative images taken with the PowerShot N100 camera can be shared with friends and family even while on-the-go. Using the Mobile Device Connect Button, users can connect to a compatible smartphone, a compatible tablet or a computer. Connection to the computer is easily done using Canon’s Image Sync1 through the cloud. For the first time in Canon’s line up, the PowerShot N100 camera has the convenient connectivity of Near Field Communication (NFCTM) offered on AndroidTM devices. After an initial one-time set up, with NFC, users simply press the Mobile Device Connect Button and tap their NFC enabled Android2 device to the PowerShot N100 camera which automatically launches the Canon Camera Window App3 so users can share images from the camera to the phone with ease.

Enhance Your Images
The Creative Shot mode on the PowerShot N100 camera includes four new filter categories to bring an enhanced artistic touch to photos. The filter categories are: Retro, Monochrome, Special and Natural. In Creative Shot mode, users compose their image and let the PowerShot N100 camera analyze the photo to apply one of a series of artistic elements of varying composition, lighting and color. After an image is captured, Creative Shot mode will automatically render five different variations of the shot to deliver unique, new perspectives while still retaining the original image. There are also 46 new filter types, including HDR effects, to help artistic expression reach new creative levels.

In addition to the creative imaging functions, the PowerShot N100 camera offers a 5x optical zoom, a 24mm Wide-Angle f/1.8 lens, a 12.1-Megapixel High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and Canon’s DIGIC 6 image processor to help provide stunning image quality. Users also have the ability to quickly access and then record high-quality 1080p Full HD video with the dedicated movie button. To make choosing the ideal setting for each shot convenient, the camera’s Intelligent IS System allows the PowerShot N100 camera to automatically select the optimal image stabilization settings according to the shooting conditions, so shooting in dimly lit or bright situations can be easy and accurate.

The PowerShot N100’s new body design gives the camera a portable shape. The three-inch capacitive touch, tilt LCD panel allows users to capture images at unique angles, up to 90 degrees.

Pricing and Availability
The PowerShot N100 digital camera is expected to be available in May 2014 in white or black for an estimated retail price of $349.99.
