Approximately 90 lenses have been added to the Lens Distortion Test Comparison Tool. Newly added lenses include most Nikon lenses and many third party lenses.
Some of you have indicated that a grid overlay would be a useful addition to this tool and I plan to make such a grid optional. If you know of an easy way to create a grid using Photoshop, would you mind emailing me instructions for doing so? Thanks!

ISO 12233 crops from two review lenses have been added to the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS II USM Lens Review page.
As expected and similar to what was seen in the Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM Lens Review, the results from this lens are impressive. Less impressive is the much-hyped-by-Canon with-extender-III image quality performance. My Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS USM version I Lens performed at least as well as either of my Canon EF 400mm f/2.8 L IS II USM Lens lenses with extenders mounted.
Lens specifications and measurements are also available for the new 400 II. The lighter weight of this lens over the previous model is very noticeable - and very welcomed.

A new tool has been added to the Digital SLR Lens Comparison Tools. Introducing what is perhaps the most drool-inducing page on the site:
Big Lens Product Image Comparison
Both Canon and Nikon super telephoto lenses are included.
Sorry if the site seemed soggy this week. The rain gauge here at's world headquarters captured just under 14" of rain this week. Recall hearing about the "Susquehanna River" on the news? I'm about 4 miles from it. If it rains any more, I will be able to see it. Fortunately I am high and dry, but my prayers go out to those of you who are not. Stay safe!
The timing of the rain was not good as my new 300 II and 400 II lenses arrived with the storm. I have been working on the studio portion of the reviews and will get you some standardized results soon. Images of the new lenses are included in the new Big Lens comparison above and more are available on the Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens Review and Canon EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens Review placeholder pages.

Reuters is stating that "Nikon Corp will enter the market for lightweight, interchangeable-lens digital cameras and release its first product with a mirrorless design later this year".
There have been many rumors about a Nikon MILC coming soon, but the Reuters report certainly adds substantiation to those rumors.
Also stated was: "The Nikkei said Canon has also reported researching the mechanism and other technologies to develop small, lightweight digital cameras and could enter this market in the future."
While a mirrorless design has some advantages, I will not be excited if the sensor choice is smaller than APS-C.

Epson Press Release:
Epson Introduces the Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 Designer Edition – A New Generation of Package Prototyping
Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 Joins Family of Designer Edition Printer-and-RIP Systems for Creative Professionals
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Sept. 7, 2011 – Epson America today announced a new addition to the Epson® Stylus® Pro Designer Edition line – the Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 Designer Edition. Combining the Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 with an industry-leading EFI™ eXpress WT software RIP, this system is engineered to deliver extremely high-resolution packaging mock-ups for graphic design firms, creative agencies and brand owners.
This system combines the advanced hardware and aqueous Epson UltraChrome® HDR White ink technology of the Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 with the Adobe® Postscript® interpreter and PANTONE® color matching capabilities of the EFI eXpress RIP. Together, this combination allows users to print both color and white ink directly on clear or metallic media, as well as color accurate CMYK comps, proofs, mock-ups, and prototypes. In addition, the software includes an easy-to-use intuitive interface that saves time and produces accurate spot colors with the included PANTONE, DIC, HKS, and TOYO libraries.
“Epson continues to break printing barriers, taking what is perceived to be a complex process and providing a solution that offers both ease-of-use and intuitive functionality,” said Larry Kaufman, product manager, Professional Imaging, Epson America, Inc. “The Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 Designer Edition builds on Epson’s strengths in the graphic design community to deliver a superior product for the packaging creative process and mock-up needs.”
The Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 Designer Edition allows designers to create in-house mock-ups more efficiently than using an outside vendor, as well as gain creative control of packaging concepts with reduced turn-around time. In addition, the software provides users with the ability to print directly from the latest creative design software or drag-and-drop files to a hot folder for cross platform network printing. Full support is included for all Epson proofing and packaging media, with the ability to add profiles for additional media types.
Pricing, Support and Availability
The Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 Designer Edition joins the Epson Stylus Pro 3880, 4900, 7890 and 9890 Designer Editions, and is now available through authorized Epson Professional Graphics resellers for $6,995 (MSRP). The printer and RIP is supported on both Macintosh OS X and Microsoft Windows operating systems.
The Epson Stylus Pro WT7900 Designer Edition is supported with a standard Epson PreferredSM Limited Warranty, a one-year program that includes toll-free advanced telephone access Monday through Friday and usually next business-day on-site service in the unlikely event of any hardware failure. Epson PreferredPlus service plans are available that cover both the hardware and software for up to two additional years. For additional information, visit

Press Release:
Adobe Carousel Photography App Debuts for Mac OS and iOS Devices
Adobe Imaging Magic Delivers All-New Way to Browse, Enhance and Share Photos Across Devices
LAS VEGAS, Photoshop World 2011 — Sept. 7, 2011 — During the Photoshop World 2011 keynote, Adobe Systems Incorporated (Nasdaq:ADBE) announced Adobe® Carousel™ for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch and Mac OS. Adobe Carousel is designed for anyone who loves photographs, takes a lot of them, and needs a simple way to view, browse, adjust and share them without worrying about manual syncing or storage. Adobe Carousel uses the powerful photo-processing technology that is used in Adobe Photoshop® Lightroom®, so customers get the finest photo-editing results delivered consistently no matter what the device. Photos look great and are easy to share directly with family and friends.
Adobe Carousel is comprised of a set of client apps for iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, and Mac OS desktops (versions for Windows and other devices are expected in the first half of 2012). When customers import their photo library into Adobe Carousel, or take new photos using Adobe Carousel on an iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, those photos are automatically accessible on any supported device through the cloud-based smart mesh technology incorporated in Adobe Carousel. Once imported, any edits, deletions or additions to the library made on one device are automatically updated across all devices linked with the account. With Adobe Carousel, manual syncing and device storage limitations are a thing of the past.
Setting up Adobe Carousel is easy. Customers will just download the apps, set up a subscription plan on their iPhone and iPad, and they are ready to go. Subscribers can import a virtually unlimited number of JPEG files, and install Adobe Carousel apps on as many of their compatible devices as they want.
“With Adobe Carousel we are extending the power of Adobe’s imaging expertise beyond the desktop and onto tablets and smartphones, delivering instant access to your complete photo library and the freedom to edit and share photos anywhere, any time,” said Winston Hendrickson, vice president of Digital Imaging Products, Adobe. “Thanks to Adobe Carousel, users never need to worry about wasting time syncing, remembering if a photo was saved to a particular device, or worrying about maxing out storage on their iPhone or iPad.”
Familiar multi-touch gestures provide a fun and interactive experience to explore tens of thousands of photos quickly and easily, and Adobe’s powerful photo-processing engine lets users adjust exposure, shadows, highlights, white balance, vibrance, clarity and contrast. There are also over a dozen “Looks” that allow customers to quickly experiment with the appearance of a photo. Adobe Carousel simplifies and enhances photo sharing by allowing subscribers to invite friends and family members to collaborate on a photo library free of charge – so anyone with a Carousel capable device can view existing photos and contribute new ones, apply adjustments and Looks to images, and easily grab and flag favorite photos. Users can also share photos by sending them directly to Facebook, Twitter and Tumblr or via email.
Pricing and Availability
The Adobe Carousel apps will be available through the iTunes App Store and for Mac later this month. Through Jan. 31, 2012, Adobe plans to offer Adobe Carousel for a special introductory price of US$59.99/year or US$5.99/month. Anyone subscribing at that price will be able to renew at that same price for an additional two years. At the conclusion of the introductory offer, Adobe Carousel will be US$99.99/year or US$9.99/month. By subscribing, customers automatically receive any enhancements and updates to Adobe Carousel at no additional charge. Customers receive a complimentary subscription for up to 30 days and can purchase a monthly or yearly subscription at any time from their iPad or iPhone.
Customers can download and install the Adobe Carousel apps as many times and across as many devices as they want as a part of their subscription (no additional fees apply). For more information, including system requirements, visit

From PMA:
PMA@CES: Where imaging technology meets technique
JACKSON, Mich. – PMA – The Worldwide Community of Imaging Associations announced details of its compelling four-day educational line-up coinciding with the 2012 International CES in Las Vegas, Nev. For the first time, photo-industry members can combine the famous Digital Imaging Marketing Association (DIMA) conference with the classic PMA education program, along with attending hundreds of PMA@CES exhibits.
“PMA@CES is shaping up to be the largest photo technology and education event ever,” says Ted Fox, executive director and CEO, PMA. “By partnering with the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), PMA@CES offers an unprecedented opportunity to explore emerging technologies at the acres of exhibits, then enjoy industry-specific classes, seminars and networking opportunities.
“Hotels and flights will fill up fast, so retailers, photographers and lab owners – especially those who have not attended a past CES -- should register right away,” advises Fox. Since registration opened for PMA@CES, more than 4,000 trade registrations have already been received.
The DIMA program, Jan. 8-9, 2012, at Bally’s Las Vegas, features five tracks: “Professional Imaging,” “Retail Strategy,” “Social Media,” “Photo Publishing” and “IS&T Technology for Digital Photo Fulfillment.” DIMA is the unsung hero of the PMA experience, giving attendees exposure to cutting-edge concepts to help attendees market imaging products and services better, to build a stronger business base, to increase revenue and to become more efficient and profitable.
The 2012 DIMA conference, which requires a separate fee from the PMA educational program, includes a PMA@CES Exhibits Plus Pass, which allows access to exhibit show floor, keynote addresses, SuperSession and select conference sessions. The full program and registration information is available here.
The PMA@CES Conference takes place Jan. 10-12, 2012, at The Venetian, the hub for all things photo at CES. Two tracks – “Retail Strategy for the Photo Industry” and “Trends and Technology” – offer a clear picture of opportunities in photo and the future direction of digital imaging. These educational sessions are the perfect complement to the PMA@CES exhibits at The Venetian.
Because of the relationship with CEA, photo industry members will have access to dozens of different workshops, all designed to elevate their expertise in marketing, technology, social media and sales, as well as the renowned CES Keynotes.
There are thousands of PMA members who have never attended CES, the largest consumer electronics show, and PMA@CES offers a unique opportunity. The International CES typically draws more than 140,000 attendees each year and, with the Venetian serving as the PMA@CES hub, PMA photo retailers, imaging labs and professional photographers will have an opportunity to experience the excitement of both.
