From Canon USA:

MELVILLE, N.Y., August 3, 2016 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, will be bringing their service and support expertise to Brazil to help maximize the uptime and performance of its users' professional imaging equipment. From pro DSLR cameras and EF lenses to broadcast television lenses, Canon's award-winning service and support staff will be providing preventative maintenance and repairs to help professionals who have put their trust in Canon imaging equipment.

Canon's team of over 70 highly trained technicians and support staff will be in Brazil for nearly a month to support professional photographers and broadcasters, just as they do throughout the year. Canon Professional Services (CPS) is set to provide comprehensive equipment maintenance and repairs, extensive equipment loans and expert technical support.

"Canon is proud to offer professional photographers and broadcasters high quality image-making solutions that are thoughtfully designed and versatile so that they can capture sharp, clear, detailed images and video," said Elizabeth Pratt, director, Professional Client Development and Support, Canon U.S.A. "Knowing that iconic images will be captured, seen and shared by people around the world really drives Canon to provide professionals with not only high quality equipment but the customer support they need to help ensure they never miss a beat if anything happens to their equipment."

Canon EOS DSLR cameras and EF lenses are the camera and lenses of choice of a majority of the top U.S.-based news agencies and professional sports photographers.

The Associated Press will be using Canon cameras and lenses exclusively, including cameras which are integrated with advanced robotics systems. The robotic camera systems can be mounted both in the rafters high above a field of play and underwater in pools, all fully controlled remotely over a network. "High-speed and high-performing digital imaging solutions like the EOS-1D X Mark II camera and L-series EF lenses are key to our team's success," said Santiago Lyon, vice president and director of photography, Associated Press. "Canon provides innovative technology and world-class optics that give us the solutions we need to create compelling images."

A majority of Reuters photographers from around the world will be using Canon DSLR cameras and lenses and trust Canon products and award-winning support team to keep them up and running. "Photographing large sporting events for thousands of news outlets and an audience of billions requires meticulous planning and technical resilience. The staff and engineers from CPS help ensure that the Canon cameras used by the world's top sports photographers receive precision treatment that allows them to take pictures that capture key moments and illustrate the spirit of competition," said Kevin Coombs, editor-in-chief for Thomson Reuters.

The Canon EOS-1D X Mark II DSLR camera and ultra-wide zoom EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens were selected to be used for Getty Images' new high-tech, remote-controlled underwater robotic system. The camera provides Getty Images with a fully networkable solution that features precise white balance, a blazing fast frame rate and impressive low-light capabilities, which make the camera ideal for capturing fast action. When combined with the durable and rugged EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lens, the system will allow Getty Images to capture images at extremely wide perspectives with incredible sharpness and minimal distortion from the center of the image to the periphery, all across the entire zoom range. "As the world's leading visual communications company, we believe that our world class sports photographers must have the most up-to-date photographic technology that empowers them to do their job, and to do it exceptionally well. Getty Images is using Canon's EOS-1D X Mark II cameras and EF 11-24mm f/4L USM lenses in a unique, remotely-controlled underwater camera system that gives us the flexibility to follow and capture action from beneath," said Ken Mainardis, vice president of Sport at Getty Images. "We recently used the new underwater system and the images were remarkable. We're looking forward to using our Canon gear to capture more fantastic underwater imagery."

"The European Pressphoto Agency (EPA) will have a photographic team of 40 capturing incredible moments. Months ago, EPA's entire U.S. contingent switched over to the Canon EOS System," explained Gernot Hensel, EPA's long-standing head of sports and deputy editor-in-chief. "The EPA team is comprised of colleagues from all over the world, and the majority of them will be using Canon equipment, including robotic systems, to capture the action."

Simon Bruty, an award-winning sports photographer and Canon Explorer of Light is one of the best sports photographers in the world. "As a professional photographer, I have to be able to capture every moment of the action because a hundredth of a second can mean the difference between capturing or missing the winning moment or race finish, and Canon cameras, like the new EOS-1D X Mark II, deliver the stunning image quality and speed I need while working," said Mr. Bruty. "The 14 frames per second that the EOS-1D X Mark II camera can capture, which enables over 12 seconds of continuous RAW shooting without buffering, means that I could shoot an entire 100 meter dash without taking my finger off of the shutter release. If I shot in JPEG mode and have a large enough memory card, I could do it for the entire 2+ hours of a marathon race!"

YouTube Personality and Actress Gave the Crowd at VidCon 2016 a Sneak Peek At What Makes Her a Rebel With A Cause

MELVILLE, N.Y., June 29, 2016 – Anna Akana and Canon U.S.A., Inc., together announced that Akana will become the latest personality featured in the "Rebel With A Cause" initiative, which celebrates 25 years since the introduction of Canon's first EOS Rebel SLR camera. Following in the footsteps of American daredevil Nik Wallenda and GRAMMY Award winning record producer Swizz Beatz, Akana, a strong proponent of anti-bullying and suicide prevention, will be featured in a video dedicated to her own unique cause, debuting in September.

"As someone who loves creating comedic content with a message, I'm excited to be partnering with Canon as their next Rebel With A Cause," said actress and filmmaker Anna Akana. "The cause I'm advocating is one that hits home for me, and I'm very passionate about creating awareness and effecting change however I can."

In 1990, the iconic "Image is Everything" campaign introduced the Canon EOS Rebel, an SLR camera born with a cause — to put the power of pro photography into the hands of the public and level the playing field forever. Twenty-five years later, Canon launched "Rebel With A Cause," embarking on a journey to follow modern day rebels who challenge convention in their own unique way, capturing their causes through the eye of a Canon EOS Rebel T6i DSLR camera. "Rebel With A Cause" invites people into their worlds to celebrate the imagery that makes their causes shine and motivate others to join their movements.

"Canon has been a leader in the industry for years and partnering with a content creator is something that just comes as a natural fit for our 'Rebel With A Cause' campaign," said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "Anna embodies the Canon mentality of creating inspiring content and we're excited to share that passion with someone who is a positive role model for young creators today."

Canon will conclude the year-long "Rebel With A Cause" program in October with a consumer Rebel, whose cause will be chosen from the recently closed contest searching for the next great inspiration. In addition to a cash prize, the winner will have the opportunity to bring their cause to life with a documentary production, similar to those of the previous Rebels.

Fans are encouraged to make the season last a lifetime by submitting some of their favorite photo moments to the Canon Little League Photo Contest. Canon U.S.A. supports future generations of women in the community with educational event

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 17, 2016 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today hosted Girls Inc., a nonprofit organization that focuses on giving confidence to girls, for “A Day at Canon” at the Company’s corporate headquarters in Melville, NY.

“We are so grateful to Canon USA, Inc. for putting together this truly inspirational event for our girls” said Neela Lockel, executive director for Girls Inc. of Long Island. “The team prepared a wonderful day that left the girls excited and thinking about their own futures.”

Approximately 30 young women ages 15-18 across Long Island attended this all-day event specially designed to bring young girls together. They were presented with opportunities to learn about Canon, be inspired by women in the workforce today and visualize their personal future career paths, perhaps one day in the technology sector with Canon.

“Canon follows a Kyosei philosophy, which means, all people, regardless of race, religion, or culture, harmoniously living and working together into the future”, said Christine Sedlacek, senior director of Digital Marketing Services Division, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “We are excited to have the opportunity to positively impact these young women and share our Kyosei philosophy in a tangible way within the local community.”

Girls Inc. guests were greeted with a Continental breakfast and received tours of the corporate showroom, showcasing some of Canon’s top product lines, such as Cinema EOS and Mixed Reality. Influential female employees of Canon U.S.A. across the IT, Product Marketing, Social Media, Legal and Finance departments met with the girls to educate them on their journey in the workforce and their experience with Canon U.S.A.

The young women of Girls Inc. participated in a series of workshops focusing on budgeting and career planning to give them tools to positively impact their career path. They also completed their own personal journey timelines outlining how far they have come to get where they are today. To close out the day, the girls printed out their journey timelines to bring home and leave by their workspace or pin to an inspiration board as an encouraging reminder.

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 11, 2016 –Spring is all about having the right look and Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is giving photographers of all levels two new options that can improve their creativity and versatility; the Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT flash and the Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens.

Photographers looking to take rapid-fire flash images will appreciate the improved recycling time in the new Canon Speedlite-600EX II-RT flash. Those looking to explore the world of macro photography will appreciate the stylish compact look of the new Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens, the first EF-M Macro Lens for the Canon EOS M Camera System, which features Image Stabilization and a pair of built-in miniature Macro Lites to enhance image quality during close-up photography.

The Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT Flash Offers Improved Continuous Flash Firing and More
The Speedlite 600EX II-RT flash is compatible with most EOS cameras. It replaces Canon’s top-of-the-line Speedlite 600EX-RT, and improves continuous flash firing by approximately 1.1 to 1.5 times when using AA batteries and up to two times when adding the new optional Compact Battery Pack CP-E4N.

Additional Speedlite 600EX II-RT flash features include:

  • Zoom flash head covers wide focal length range of 20–200mm; maximum guide number is 197 ft./60m at ISO 100, making Speedlite 600EX II-RT flash the most powerful flash unit in the EOS system.
  • Wireless flash shooting support is available for both radio and optical transmission with compatible Canon Speedlites, offering users greater functional range when using flash.
  • Multiple flash system support allows control of up to five groups of compatible Canon Speedlites.
  • Dust- and water-resistant body for reliable operation in harsh environments.
  • Flash-readiness indicator on the display panel, simplified button and dial operation and variable manual flash output.
  • New, specially designed accessories supplied include a built-in bounce adapter, plus SCF-E3 hard-type color filter sets, and a soft case. The new Compact Battery Pack CP-E4N is available as an optional accessory for faster recycling time and more flashes per charge.
  • Illuminated dot matrix LCD panel for enhanced display information, including flash mode and usable distance ranges plus C.Fn (Custom Function) and P.Fn (Personal Function) settings.

First Macro Lens in the Canon EF-M lens series
Photographers looking for a compact, lightweight macro lens should look no further than the Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens, the first Canon Macro Lens specifically designed for the EOS M Camera System.

The new lens features a pair of built-in miniature Macro Lite electronic flash units that illuminate close-up subjects as needed, helping to freeze movement, enhance color accuracy and provide a better sense of depth and dimension. Two curved flash units surround the front element of the lens, with the ability to illuminate both simultaneously, or one at a time. Users are also able to adjust the brightness of the Macro Lites between “bright” and “dim” settings.

The standard focusing range of the Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens extends from infinity to life-size (1 time). Additionally, a Super Macro Mode allows shooting at even higher magnifications up to 1.2 times. This feature allows you to capture smaller details that really make your subjects stand out against the background.

Additional features of the Canon EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens include:

  • Hybrid IS, the same feature as found on Canon EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM Lens, helps reduce camera shake for enjoyable handheld photography.
  • Stepping motor (lead screw-type STM) helps provide smooth and quiet focusing operation when taking photos, and near-silence when shooting videos.
  • One UD lens and two aspherical lenses** help deliver outstanding image quality at all distance settings by reducing chromatic and spherical aberrations.
  • Angle of view similar to a 45mm standard lens (35mm equivalent) provides flexible image capture of various subjects and scenes at macro distances and beyond.
  • Tapered lens top shape makes it easy to capture high-quality images at close range without casting shadows.

The Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT electronic flash unit is scheduled to be available through authorized Canon dealers in June 2016 for an estimated retail price of $579.99. Canon’s EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM lens is scheduled to be available through authorized Canon dealers in June for an estimated retail price of $299.99.

B&H has the Canon Speedlite 600EX II-RT, CP-E4N Compact Battery Pack and the EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM available for preorder.

From Canon USA:

Canon's CarePAK PLUS promotion – with protection from kids, pets, and life including accidental damage such as drops, spills, power surges and other unforeseen events – is coming back. The new promotion period will run from May 1, 2016 to July 31, 2016.

How do we know the promotion is coming? Yesterday Canon USA released a CarePAK PLUS promo video on their YouTube channel with the dates "05/01/16 - 07/31/2016" appearing at the end of it. However, after originally embedding that video into this post, its permission level was suddenly set to Private (and therefore unviewable).

So which products will be eligible for the CarePAK PLUS coverage? Well, we're not 100% sure yet (the marketing representative I spoke to at Canon did not have that information yet). Below you'll find the cameras and lenses which qualified for the previous CarePAK PLUS program, and it's probably a safe bet that they'll be covered in the new program as well. We assume the EOS-1D X Mark II and 80D will also be included in this promotion, but that's just speculation for now.

Previously Eligible Camera Bodies/Kits

Previously Eligible Lenses

In addition, lenses included with eligible body were covered. For example, if a customer purchased the Canon EOS 5D Mark III and EF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM Lens kit, the lens will was covered since it is included in the box with the body (also known as a “hard bundle”).

For more information, check out Canon USA's CarePAK PLUS Promo page.

Using Canon Cameras and Lenses, Teams Shooting from the International Space Station Capture Breathtaking Images of Our Planet from a Vantage Point Few Get to See

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 14, 2016 – The future of 4K filmmaking is looking up — in fact, all the way to space. A Beautiful Planet, the latest 3D space documentary from acclaimed filmmaker Toni Myers and IMAX Entertainment, made in cooperation with NASA, will premiere in IMAX in New York on April 16 and was shot primarily in space using Canon cameras and lenses. The film will be shown to the public exclusively in IMAX and IMAX 3D theaters beginning April 29.

The Canon EOS C500 4K Digital Cinema Camera and EOS-1D C 4K cameras were transported from Earth to the International Space Station (ISS) in November 2014 via an unmanned supply ship, and were received by NASA astronaut Terry Virts, astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti from the European Space Agency and Cosmonaut Anton Shkaplerov. This was the first time that 4K cameras were brought aboard the space station for a commercial film project. During a six-month mission at the ISS, Virts, Cristoforetti and Shkaplerov worked closely with NASA astronauts Kjell Lindgren, Butch Wilmore, Scott Kelly, and Kimiya Yui of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) to take turns using Canon’s advanced digital cameras and lenses to film footage of lightning storms, the continents, volcanoes, coral reefs and bright city lights on Earth for the film. One of the film’s greatest and most dramatic highlights, the striking imagery of the Northern Lights--or the aurora borealis-- was captured by NASA astronaut Kjell Lindgren. These awe-inspiring images were previously unattainable in such stunning resolution.

The Canon EOS C500 4K (4096 x 2160-pixel) Digital Cinema Camera is capable of originating uncompressed RAW output for external recording to meet the demands of premium cinematic productions and other top-quality production markets. It features a Super 35mm, 8.85-megapixel CMOS image sensor, DIGIC DV III Image Processor and an expansive range of recording and output options specifically for 4K and 2K image acquisition. The compact, lightweight Canon EOS-1D C Digital SLR camera delivers outstanding video performance and provides video recording at 4K (4096 x 2160-pixel) or Full HD (1920 x 1080-pixel) resolution to support high-end motion picture, television production and other advanced imaging applications.

‘A Beautiful Planet’ joins Canon at NAB
A gallery of still images taken on the ISS with the Canon EOS-1D C camera and Canon lenses during the shooting of the film will be shown at the Canon booth # C4325 at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) trade show, April 18-21, 2016 in Las Vegas, NV. During NAB, the film’s Director of Photography, James Neihouse, ASC, will speak at Canon’s stage on the challenges and benefits of shooting in space. Joining him will be Marsha Ivins, a consultant on the film, former NASA astronaut, and a veteran of five space shuttle missions. Neihouse has worked on more than 30 IMAX films including Space Station 3D and Hubble 3D and trained more than 25 shuttle and space-station crews on the intricacies of large-format filmmaking.

The documentary, A Beautiful Planet was produced, written, and directed by Toni Myers, and is narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Jennifer Lawrence.

About A Beautiful Planet
A Beautiful Planet is a breathtaking portrait of Earth from space, providing a unique perspective and increased understanding of our planet and galaxy as never seen before. Made in cooperation with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the film features stunning footage of our magnificent blue planet — and the effects humanity has had on it over time — captured by the astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS). From space, Earth blazes at night with the electric intensity of human expansion — a direct visualization of our changing world. But it is within our power to protect the planet. As we continue to explore and gain knowledge of our galaxy, we also develop a deeper connection to the place we all call home. From IMAX Entertainment and Toni Myers — the acclaimed filmmaker behind celebrated IMAX documentaries Hubble 3D, and Space Station 3D — A Beautiful Planet presents an awe-inspiring glimpse of Earth and a hopeful look into the future of humanity.

From Canon:

New Lens Features 4K Optical Performance, Enhanced Servo Drive Unit, Image Stabilization* and Autofocus* Functions- Ideal for ENG, Documentary, and Budding Filmmakers

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 13, 2016 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to announce today the new Compact-Servo 18-80mm Zoom Lens (model name CN-E18-80mm T4.4L IS KAS S), a compact and lightweight 4K-ready lens constructed for optimal mobility. A bridge between traditional Canon EF photography lenses and CN-E cinema lenses, the COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm can be ideal for filmmakers and documentary shooters who want the control and quality of cinema optics with the lightweight, compact design and features of photography lenses. The first in a new class of Canon lenses, the COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm Zoom Lens is a cinema-style lens that includes a newly developed servo drive unit as a standard feature. Additionally, the lens incorporates Image Stabilization* and Autofocus* functionality, two extremely useful features not commonly found in cinema lenses, but which are ubiquitous in photography lenses. The lens also provides high image quality that supports 4K image productions and was designed to be able to be utilized in a variety of shooting styles including, hand-held, shoulder mounted, and tripod mounted.

“The new COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm Zoom Lens ushers in a new class of optics for Canon. Featuring the outstanding build-quality and excellent optical performance professionals have come to expect from Canon, this new lens provides videographers with an affordable and versatile option when stepping up from EF lenses,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “We are excited about the new form factor this lens takes on and can’t wait to see how the imaging community utilizes it.”

Covering the commonly used focal length range of 18mm to 80mm, this new Zoom Lens combines the functionality of Canon EF lenses with the precision and cinematic look of Canon Cinema lenses. The new COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm Zoom Lens is 4K-ready and features auto focus and optical image stabilization with compatible camera models only, resulting in high-resolution imagery, with the ability to assist filmmakers in capturing the shot they envisioned. Compatible with EF- mount Super 35mm large-format cameras, the lens maintains brightness across the entire focal range at T4.4 (equal to F4.0). For added convenience, videographers can control many of the features of the lens in a variety of ways through the EF-mount communication, including Dual Pixel CMOS AF, push auto iris, record start and stop and remote lens control via the camera with an optional remote control, compensation for chromatic aberration (when paired with the EOS C300 Mark II Cinema Camera), metadata acquisition, and selection of T-number display. The COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm Zoom Lens features a nine-blade iris aperture diaphragm to help give footage a truly artistic and beautiful look and feel, providing the much desired “bokeh” effect in the out-of-focus areas. For improved operability, focus breathing has been greatly reduced due to the three group inner focusing system.

The lens comes equipped with a newly developed Servo Drive Unit, which provides seamless switching between servo and manual modes, allowing videographers motorized control of focus, zoom, and iris settings. The Servo Drive Unit is compatible with broadcast style industry-standard lens controllers including Canon’s ZSD-300D or FPD-400D. To further enhance ease-of-use for ENG and “run-and-gun” style shooters, Canon has developed an optional grip accessory specifically designed for the new lens, the ZSG-C10. The grip accessory connects to the camera through a 20-pin cable, allowing a variety of lens functions to be controlled from the grip, including zooming via a zoom rocker switch, one-shot AF and the starting and stopping of a recording. When the lens and grip are being used with the EOS C100 Mark II or EOS C300 Mark II Cinema Cameras, users will also have the ability to control the zoom and iris from the camera’s grip unit.

The Canon COMPACT-SERVO 18-80mm Zoom Lens and ZSG-C10 accessory grip are scheduled to be available later in 2016 for an estimated retail price of $5,500 and $499 respectively.**

In 2010, Canon announced a special Studio Version of its EOS 7D which allowed for the embedding of barcode details in its images' EXIF information via a specially modified WFT-E5A Wireless File Transmitter.

Although no official announcement has been made, it seems Canon has developed a similarly modified EOS 7D Mark II and has provided an overview of its capabilities when paired with a WFT-E7A. Here are couple of screenshots from the video above:

Canon EOS 7D Mark II Studio Version Overview 1

Canon EOS 7D Mark II Studio Version Overview 2

As you can see, the Studio Version of the 7D Mark II can be identified by a label on the battery door. Right now there is no indication whether or not previously-purchased WFT-E7s will have to be modified by a service center in order to enable compatability with the extra features available in the 7D II SV.

My guess is that Canon USA will release an official announcement about the specially modified EOS 7D Mark II in the not-so-distant future.

From Canon USA:

Join Canon USA Technical Advisor Mike Gurley as he gives an overview of the EOS 7D Mark II SV Studio Version with a barcode solution. He goes over key camera features and discusses how the camera can be used for different workflows in event photography. Mike also shows how to set up the camera to sync with a compatible barcode scanner.
