"Peter Neill is one of life’s nice people. And yet the soft-speaking Irishman works in one of the most volatile businesses imaginable, where egos and excess converge with often-explosive results. The music business is not known for its manners, and yet here we meet a man who is charm itself. Could this be the secret to getting iconic shots of bands on the run? CPN Editor David Corfield finds out..."

From Canon Professional Network:

"It’s that time of year again, when millions of children leave the comforts of home to start a new school year. For parents with children going to school for the first time, this is an important milestone they will want to remember for years to come. Even for an older child, documenting them at the start of each year, or when they start new legs of their education (such as entering Junior High, and High School) is a rewarding project.

Luckily, great back-to-school photos are easy to take – with little more than a basic digital SLR (for greater imaging control) and some attention to details.

Here are a few tips that will elevate what may have been just a quick snapshot into a truly meaningful portrait:"

From the Canon Professional Network:

"Digital Photo Professional (DPP) version 4.0 is the latest release of Canon’s free RAW image management and editing software, and this incarnation is heralded as the first major update since the software was launched. Canon has responded to feedback from Digital Photo Professional users and incorporated feature requests and suggestions into version 4.0 to create a better looking package that offers a smoother, faster workflow. In this article CPN writer George Cairns examines how DPP 4.0 is better equipped to support your photographic workflow – as you import, browse and develop large numbers of RAW images – and investigates new features, such as the ability to make selective hue, saturation and luminance adjustments for eight colour gamuts."

From the Canon Professional Network:

"We’ve all heard the line: 'Oh, I must get an agent.' But what do you actually need an agent for? The person representing you is not, according to respected manager Mark George, someone who’s going to be working the phone getting you bookings. The role is much wider and far-reaching, as CPN Editor David Corfield discovers...

Note the noun: ‘manager’. Mark George is not an agent. He hates the word, and shuts me up in a puff of cigar smoke as I sit down and sip my coffee. 'An agent to me sounds like someone who just gets you bookings, like a rep. I hate that term. I might represent somebody in a managerial way but there is a difference. I look after people who are too focused on what they do to understand that the world around them needs looking at as well. And that’s where I come in.'"

"Modern action movies are generally packed with computer-generated imagery (CGI), resulting in production budgets that have soared into the stratosphere. But when director Scott Waugh enlisted Shane Hurlbut as Director of Photography on the movie spin-off from the ‘Need For Speed’ game franchise he wanted to buck the trend and shoot the action as close to live as possible, which called for a special camera. CPN writer James Morris spoke to Shane Hurlbut to discover how and why Canon’s EOS C500 Digital Cinema Camera satisfied all the important requirements for shooting live action at 150 miles per hour."

Canon France, in association with Images-Evidence, has announced that the 14th annual Canon Female Photojournalist Award is open until 26 May 2014 for submissions from female photojournalists of any age and nationality.

This year, for the first time, the award is supported by Elle Magazine and Canon France will grant the winning female photojournalist €8,000 to help her to continue and complete a photojournalistic project on a social, economic, political or cultural subject.

A jury made up of top photography and press professionals will select the winner in June. Entrants will be judged both upon the presentation of their project and their previous work. Among the selection criteria are the quality of the photographs, the journalistic thought processes and relevance of the chosen subject.

The award will be presented to the winner during the Professional Week (1-7 September 2014) of the 2014 Visa pour l’Image international festival of photojournalism in Perpignan, France, and the winning photojournalist will then continue with a project which will lead to an exhibition or screening at the Visa pour l’Image festival in 2015.

An exhibition of the work of the 2013 award winner – US photojournalist Mary F. Calvert (Zuma Press) – showing images from her project on sexual violence in the US military will feature as part of the exhibition programme of the 2014 Visa pour l’Image festival.
