About the European Imaging and Sound Association

EISA is the unique association of 50 special interest magazines from 20 European countries. Internationally known for the European EISA Awards, EISA started in 1982 when the editors-in-chief from five European photo magazines came together to select “The Camera of the Year” for the first time. They had no idea that out of this meeting EISA - the European Imaging and Sound Association - would emerge some years later. This historic moment took place in 1989 after another 10 photo magazines had joined the group in the meanwhile.

Later on another two panels where developed inside EISA, the Video Panel and the Audio Panel. Following the natural evolution from pure audio to multichannel entertainment this latest panel gave origin later on to the Audio/HT Panel. It was only several years later, in 2002, that the joining together of several magazines from EISA that were making coverage of the Mobile Electronics area and several other magazines belonging to the then extinguished ECAP association gave origin to the In-Car Electronics Panel.

In 2007 the existing Convergence Panel was renamed as Mobile Devices Panel to give an effective answer to more and more products that belong to the areas of audio, video and mobile at the same time.

And here we are now - 50 magazines from 20 different European countries joined together forming the worlds most prestigious multimedia magazines association.

In June each year, the editors-in-chief from all EISA member magazines meet to decide which of products analyzed in their publications during the past year deserve the coveted EISA Award. The six categories under consideration are: Audio, Video, Home Theater, Photography, In-Car Electronics Electronics and Mobile Devices.

From Tamron USA:

Expanded Tamron repair technician and customer service staff at Tamron USA's Long Island Headquarters makes the dream a reality

August 14, 2013, Commack, N.Y.- Tamron USA announced that the company now offers 3-business day repair service turnaround for photographic lenses. This achievement works to alleviate customer concerns that when they send in a product for repair service, they may be left without that product for some time. Now, all lenses received in our system by noon EST are estimated the same day and moved onto the next stage. Lenses under warranty (Tamron USA offers a 6-year limited warranty on its photographic lenses) are repaired and shipped back to the customer within three business days. Out of warranty lenses are repaired and shipped back within three business days of the customer's approval of the repair estimate.

"We are thrilled here at Tamron USA to supply our customers with a 3-business day turnaround time," stated Pat Simonetti, Director Technical & Customer Service/Distribution. "With the support of our parent company, we were able to take the necessary action to build upon our staff and make this dream a reality. This accomplishment was and continues to be a real team endeavor. I truly appreciate the efforts from all of those involved in this project," said Simonetti.

The Background

Customers may anguish about sending a lens in for repair, expecting that they could be without their favorite or workhorse lens for some time. Tamron Co., Ltd. recognized this and challenged its subsidiaries to reach a standard 3-business day turnaround service to make customers feel more confident that, in the unlikely event their lens requires service, they would not be long without it. "By speeding up the repair turnaround time, we can alleviate our customers' anxiety about repairs and thereby increase their satisfaction of and confidence in Tamron products," stated Tak Inoue, President and CEO of Tamron USA. Tamron USA took dramatic steps over the past year to increase the number of repair technicians that work on photographic lenses as well as customer service staff. Internal systems were changed to accommodate the inspection of lenses received by noon of each day and route the lenses to the proper technician for expert repair. Repaired lenses are then given top priority in the distribution center to ensure the product is on its way back to the customer within the established guidelines.

While the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art Lens is designed to cover only an APS-C-sized camera sensor, this lens mounts and functions on a full frame DSLR. And the vignetting is not as bad as you might expect.

The image accompanying this post is a best-case example. Check out the complete full frame vignetting comparison to get the entire picture.

From Epson Germany:

August 9, 2013 - Epson Germany is reaffirming its commitment to the environment by supporting environmental photofestivals, including the renowned "horizonte" festival held at Zingst on Germany's Baltic coast earlier this year. The company became the festival's premium partner for print and projection for the third successive year.

The festival's guiding principle is that photography increases environmental awareness through visual means, and Epson enthusiastically participated by using its state-of-the-art Epson SureColor SC-S series printers to print over 1,400 square metres used in 25 indoor and outdoor displays on site. The exhibition included the "Life-Size Elephants" open air installation by Austrian photographer and filmmaker Klaus Reisinger.

"Sustainable business and environmental protection are core elements of our corporate philosophy. It's a real stroke of luck when a festival's objective and a company's message overlap to such an extent. That is why Epson feels committed to doing all it can to support the message being imparted by the photographers and all who build on the power of the printed image", asserted Epson Germany Managing Director Henning Ohlsson. "The festival's spectrum matches the technological diversity we can bring to bear here - whether in the Digigraphie Gallery, in indoor and outdoor photo displays, multimedia shows, print workshops or the print studio. We are delighted to be partnering the festival again this year.

"High image quality is at the heart of the cooperation between Epson and the festival,"added Ohlsson. "A perfect print brings images to life. It makes the photographer's stories tangible in the truest sense of the word. The outdoor displays are particularly technically challenging. High quality also means great durability - and the prints have to be able to withstand the harsh weather conditions by the sea in Zingst. We are superbly equipped for this."

Epson Germany has also supported exhibitions of camel photographs by Ralf Baumgarten in Dubai, and also plans to be involved in other such exhibitions going forward.

Devin Graham is a well-known action/adventure/travel videographer who uses Canon DSLRs and GoPros for his filming. In his most recent video, Devin films longboarders riding along a closed road course in Utah.

While the above video is certainly exciting and entertaining, the behind the scenes video was most interesting to me. Notice how much planning and preperation goes into the shoot and how seemingly dangerous the camerawork is (although significant safety precautions were followed).

Behind the scenes:

DSLRs have changed the landscape of filmmaking over the last few years. The introduction of the Canon 5D Mark II helped lower the bar on investment for creating high-quality, high-definition videos. If you'd like to share a video you captured with Canon or Nikon DSLRs, post a link to it on our Facebook page and tell us the gear you used in the post.

Note: If sharing a video, please make sure it's family friendly. :-)

"This is The-Digital-Picture.com's Weekend Recap for the week ending August 10th, 2013

In the news...

On Monday, Nikon announced several new products. Along with a couple of PowerShot cameras, Nikon announced the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens and the compact, lightweight SB-300 AF Speedlight. Both products are scheduled to be available at the end of this month.

On Thursday, we posted a video from National Geographic’s YouTube channel demonstrating how photographer Nick Nichols and videographer Nathan Williamson used robots and aerial drones to capture dramatic images of Serengeti lions that appear in this month’s issue of National Geographic.

And, for our deal of the week…

On Tuesday, we posted an eBay auction hosted by Adorama where you could get a Refurbished Canon EF-S 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 IS Lens for $279.99 with free shipping. That’s a 60% savings off the normal, new retail price.

Canon Professional Network has a great, informative list of Tips and Tricks that can help you get the most out of your Canon equipment. Here's one such example:

EOS-1D X: maximum frame rate

All EOS cameras quote a maximum frame rate and in the case of the EOS-1D X, this is 12fps in normal shooting. When a situation requires you to achieve the very maximum frame rate possible, there are some steps to take in order to ensure the best possible performance: keep the ISO speed below 25,600, use a shutter speed of 1/1000sec or faster and use the maximum aperture of your lens. Additionally, if you have an IS lens, turn the IS off and also make sure AF is set to One Shot.

Check out CPN's full list of Tips and Tricks.

From Zacuto:

Zacuto has two new DSLR rigs on the market and ready to ship! These DSLR rigs are foldable, compact and small enough to fit into a back pocket.

The Enforcer and Marauder are first of its kind; foldable DSLR run’n’gun stability rigs that are compatible with any DSLR or midsized camera. Both of these rigs are small enough to fold up and place in a back pocket or cargo shorts but when unfolded creates a stable camera support. These new rigs are very similar to two popular Zacuto DSLR kits, the Target Shooter and Striker. While the Target Shooter and Striker rigs are made up of various parts and rods that can be reconfigured into new setups, the Enforcer and Marauder unfold instantly and are ready to shoot.

"The Marauder is quite possibly the most gorgeous and practical DSLR rig I have ever seen,” says Philip Bloom, Director/DP/Filmmaker. "The moment I unfolded it, put my camera on and pushed it against my shoulder I knew there was no way I could use any other rig for my DSLR."

The Marauder rig, the larger of the two, includes both a gunstock and an adjustable handgrip to create a small stable structure. The Marauder includes a Zacuto Gorilla Plate V2 as the platform for the camera. The camera attaches to the plate with the single ¼ 20 screw and can also quick release on and off the Marauder with the red quick release ratcheting lever. The Gorilla Plate can be attached at two different points; in a vertical position for use with a Zacuto Z-Finder, DSLR optical viewfinder, or extended via the red push lever to place the camera further away for use without a Z-Finder.

The difference between the Marauder and the Enforcer is that the Enforcer only includes a gunstock with a comfortable rubber pad. To adjust the gunstock to different body shapes and sizes, just adjust the position of the gunstock with the two Allen screws and it’s ready to use.

Amazon carries Zacuto products.
