From Pocketwizard:

Photographers benefit from seamless integration between flash, radio trigger and exposure and lighting control

White Plains, NY – February 28, 2014 – In a joint announcement, Bowens, PocketWizard and Sekonic have aligned to create a complete wireless triggering solution for electronic flashes that will be first introduced in the U.S. market. Now most Bowens Gemini monolights will accept an optional PocketWizard module, which enables photographers to wirelessly trigger their flash with industry-standard, and widely used PocketWizard radios and Sekonic light meters.

Compatible components within the system are Bowens Gemini 500R, 500Pro, 750Pro, 1000Pro & 1500Pro series of monolights with PocketWizard module, all existing PocketWizard radio’s and today’s Sekonic L-478DR and L-758DR exposure meters. In addition, other (earlier) Sekonic meters can be used with an optional PocketWizard transmitter. All take advantage of PocketWizard 32 channels and 4-zone system.

Bowens USA President, Jan Lederman, brought the three technology leaders together to create a powerful alliance for the photographic flash market. When asked what prompted this he responded, “With the rapid advancement of photographic technology in our digital world, it is a natural evolutionary step to marry these technologies. Our goal is to provide a complete wireless environment in which photographers have greater and more accurate control of lighting in a more effortless way.”

To commemorate the alliance, PocketWizard is introducing a new Plus III Transceiver in the “Bowens’ signature yellow” color.

Pricing and Availability

Bowens products are available for purchase and rent from a growing list of specialty camera and video retailers as well as rental houses across the United States.

From PocketWizard:

New hot shoe to miniphone (HSFM3) cable allows photographers to connect any speedlight style flash to a PocketWizard radio, whether it has a PC port or not.

So. Burlington, VT - August 27, 2013 - LPA Design, manufacturers of PocketWizard Photo Products, announces the immediate availability of the new hot shoe to miniphone cable (HSFM3). This three-foot cable, which has a basic (non-TTL) hot shoe on one end and a mono miniphone connector on the other, allows photographers to slide any speedlight style flash into the shoe to avoid using the sometimes unreliable or missing PC port. The miniphone end plugs into either a Plus radio (PlusX, Plus III, Plus II or Plus Receivers), MultiMAX Transceiver or FlexTT5 Transceiver. With another PocketWizard radio on the camera, photographers now have the most reliable triggering setup possible.

"This cable has been long overdue in our line,” says Dave Schmidt, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for PocketWizard. “There are several flashes on the market that skipped the basic PC port making this cable a necessity and the PC port is not known for its reliability. This high-quality cable will provide the connectivity and reliability photographers expect from PocketWizard,” Schmidt added.

Other features of the new HSFM3 include a 1/4-20 socket below the hot shoe, gold plated contacts and robust design to ensure reliability.

Also available is the new locking PC to miniphone adapter (MPCF-L). This handy adapter allows users to convert any cord with a PC connection into a miniphone connection.

Amazon carries PocketWizard's new hot shoe to miniphone cable.

New Power Cable (PW-DC-N10) offers greater flexibility for photographers working with Nikon Digital Single-Lens Reflex cameras

So. Burlington, VT– June 19, 2013 – – LPA Design, manufacturers of PocketWizard Photo Products, announces the immediate availability of a new Nikon Power Cable (PW-DC-N10) for use with the PocketWizard MiniTT1 Transmitter, the Plus III and MultiMAX (version with USB port) Transceivers and any Nikon Digital Single-Lens Reflex (DSLR) camera equipped with a Nikon 10-pin remote terminal. The new cable provides a PocketWizard radio, mounted in the camera’s hot-shoe, the power it needs to operate from the camera.

By using the tidy (6-inch long) power cable, Nikon users ensure that their PocketWizard radio is ready when they need it because the camera keeps the Transmitter/Transceiver always awake for the fastest reaction time. And, since these PocketWizard radios use very little power, it has almost no impact on a camera’s battery life. This is especially helpful for users of the MiniTT1, whose coin-cell battery can be hard-to-find when needed.

The Nikon Power Cable (PW-DC-N10) is available now at an estimated retail price of $20.00.

From PocketWizard:

Free update provides compatibility with several new cameras and dramatic improvements to HyperSync, further removing the barrier to x-sync limitations.

So. Burlington, VT – June 12, 2013 – LPA Design, manufacturers of PocketWizard Photo Products, the world leader in wireless control of cameras, flash lighting and light meters, announces today a major update to its ControlTL firmware for the MiniTT1, FlexTT5, PowerMC2 and PowerST4 radios and minor updates for the Plus III and MultiMAX radios.

The new ControlTL firmware (version details below) provides compatibility for several new Canon and Nikon cameras, greatly improves the performance of PocketWizard’s exclusive HyperSync feature and resolves bugs in previous versions. It is available now as a free download using the PocketWizard Utility and it is strongly recommended that all current owners of the MiniTT1, FlexTT5, PowerST4 and PowerMC2 update all their radios to the latest firmware for best performance. Any current owner of the ControlTL system can easily install this version via USB connection and update their PocketWizard radios for free. Complete details are available at the PocketWizard website here.

The new firmware includes complete compatibility for the Nikon D600 and D3200 cameras and manual power control compatibility for the Canon EOS 6D, EOS-1D X and EOS Rebel T4i cameras.

In addition to the new camera compatibility, this new firmware version offers significantly improved HyperSync flash performance. This exclusive feature offers photographers the ability to use studio flash well beyond their camera’s normal x-sync speed, for greatly expanded creative control.

“Our PocketWizard HyperSync technology has redefined studio flash photography for those working outdoors,” said Dave Schmidt, Vice President of Marketing at LPA Design, the company that manufacturers PocketWizard Photo Products. “When photographers can go beyond the normal x-sync shutter speed limitation of 1/200 second or so, they can create an entirely new look whether they need to reduce ambient light to achieve shallow depth-of-field, or freeze action, or both, photographers can now do so quickly, simply and with more creative control than ever before.”

Adventure photographer Tom Bol has been using the new firmware in beta version for the past month and had this to say about the latest version, “Performance with the new software in my MiniTT1, FlexTT5 and ST4s is remarkable.” You can read more about what Tom had to say on the ProPhotoCoalition website.

Any owner of PocketWizard MiniTT1, FlexTT5, PowerMC2 or PowerST4 can benefit from the latest firmware. This release also includes several bug fixes found in earlier versions. “Downloading and installing the latest firmware is one of the simplest and smartest things a creative photographer can do,” Schmidt added. “We’ve designed our products to be reliable and upgradable because it allows owners of PocketWizard radios to keep their equipment up-to-date as new cameras, flash units and features are introduced.”

The Plus III and MultiMAX radios also have new firmware. The new firmware for the Plus III resolves some minor bugs. The MultiMAX firmware, which has been available for a while in beta, adds two new features.

PocketWizard Utility version 1.54 or newer is required before installing these updates. For more information on the latest firmware versions and how to update PocketWizard products via USB connection visit: http://www.pocketwizard.com/support/downloads/

The latest firmware versions are:

  • 6.400 for the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 for Canon
  • 3.400 for the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 for Nikon
  • 5.400 for the PowerST4
  • 2.400 for the PowerMC2
  • 1.200 for the Plus III
  • 7.51 for the MultiMAX

From PocketWizard:

April 10, 2013

So. Burlington, VT – As Canon and Nikon continue to release new cameras and flashes, PocketWizard Photo Products has established an evolving Firmware Release plan for the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 radios to address compatibility with these new products.

Our current firmware development priorities include compatibility updates, HyperSync improvements and bug fixes. The next beta will include the following:

MiniTT1/FlexTT5 Beta firmware release for Nikon
Compatibility with the following NIKON gear:

  • Nikon D600, Nikon D5200 & Nikon D3200
  • HyperSync Improvements

MiniTT1/FlexTT5 Beta firmware release for Canon
Compatibility with the following CANON gear:

  • Canon 6D & Canon T4i – Manual power control only (no TTL)
  • HyperSync Improvements

PowerMC2 & PowerST4 Beta firmware release with HyperSync Improvements

The Nikon D600 (full-featured) and Canon 6D (manual-only) firmware is in the final testing stages. Some HyperSync enhancements, currently enabled for Canon only, are also in the final testing stages for all our ControlTL radios: MiniTT1 & FlexTT5 for both Canon and Nikon including the AC9 AlienBees Adapter, and the PowerST4 & PowerMC2. This large bundle of firmware could be available in Beta this month if all goes as well as we hope, and available as officially released firmware a few weeks after that. You'll be able to get some serious practice with it well before the heat of the June wedding season.

Ongoing: The latest Canon cameras have an entirely new TTL protocol. This has proven extremely difficult to reverse engineer as is the case with the Canon 1DX. We believe we have found a path to a solution, but it will still take many weeks to validate, implement and test-test-test. There is nothing simple about this. When completed it will be made available as a free update to the ControlTL system, as have all other compatibility updates.

From PocketWizard:

Simplest PocketWizard ever is ideal entry into the PocketWizard wireless system of products

So. Burlington, VT – March 1, 2013 – LPA Design, manufacturers of PocketWizard Photo Products, the world leader in wireless control of cameras, flash lighting and light meters, today announces the immediate availability of its new PlusX Auto-Sensing Transceiver.

The high-quality PocketWizard PlusX is the perfect entry into the PocketWizard Wireless System with the same range and reliability of its renowned Plus line of radios. Whether new to off-camera flash or remote camera triggering, or a seasoned professional looking to expand their PocketWizard wireless triggering system, the PlusX is the perfect choice. And as the user’s technical needs grow, the versatile PlusX will continue to work with any other PocketWizard radios that a photographer adds to their gear box.

The 10 Channel PlusX uses PocketWizard’s patented “Auto-Sensing Transceiver Technology” which means it will automatically switch between transmit and receive as needed. Users just turn it on, connect it to the flash or camera and set the channel using its simple, rotary-dial. The PlusX automatically figures out what it needs to do to trigger remote flashes or cameras. Using the same side-profile design of the PocketWizard Plus III radio, the PlusX has an internal antenna to minimize obstruction and increase durability.

“The new PlusX transceiver adds to the legendary Plus reliability that so many photographers have come to trust on all their photographic assignments,” said Dave Schmidt, Vice President of Marketing at LPA Design, the company that manufacturers PocketWizard Photo Products. “Working on a budget should not mean sacrificing performance or reliability.”

The PlusX is compatible with all PocketWizard transmitters and receivers including PocketWizard-enabled photo gear from Profoto, Dynalite, Norman, Photogenic and Sekonic light meters. The PocketWizard Wireless System allows for total flexibility with whatever lights or cameras a photographer may be working with.

PlusX Features include:

10 Channels
With the PlusX’s 10 digitally coded Standard Channels, users can claim their own channel for exclusive triggering when working with other photographers at crowded events. Photographers can use different channels for different setups and select them simply and intuitively with the turn of a dial. And these 10 channels are compatible with every PocketWizard ever made1 set to Standard Channels 1 – 10. (1radios of the same frequency; in the United States, the PocketWizard PlusX operates on an FCC-approved frequency of 344MHz. In other markets it operates on a CE-approved frequency of 433MHz)

Backlit Channel Dial
Setting channels is as easy as turning a dial. The backlit channel dial clearly displays the channel and because the backlight consumes so little power it stays on all the time for convenience.

Internal Antenna
The PlusX features a durable, side profile design with an unobtrusive, internal antenna minimizing visual obstruction between the photographer and their subject. By utilizing an internal antenna, there’s no chance to kink or break it when on location. The total height of the transceiver and antenna is 4.2 inches, and it weighs less than 4 ounces, including batteries.

Easily Connected / Cable Port
On the user’s camera, the PlusX slides into the hot shoe with no cables required. For remotes, it features one do-it-all miniphone (3.5mm or 1/8”) sync port. The miniphone connector is much more reliable than a PC connection and every PlusX comes complete with a miniphone-to-miniphone cable, a miniphone-to-phono (1/4" or 6.3mm) adapter for triggering the majority of modern flashes, and a miniphone to locking PC cable for triggering some remote speedlights or for using a PlusX on-camera when the user can’t put it in a hot shoe. Other miniphone connector cables are available for major brands of lighting equipment in a variety of lengths. Dedicated remote camera triggering cables are also available for popular camera systems.

Auto-Sensing Transceiver
With PocketWizard’s patented Auto-Sensing Transceiver technology, the PlusX Transceiver will instantly and intelligently switch between transmitter and receiver modes keeping setup as simple as possible. The PlusX may be set to transmit (Tx) only, when desired.

Auto-Relay Mode
PocketWizard’s Auto-Sensing Transceiver technology lets users trigger a remote camera in sync with remote flashes using only three PocketWizard radios: the one in their hands, a PlusX cabled to a remote camera, and the one connected to a remote flash. The PlusX cabled to a remote camera will receive a radio signal and trigger the camera’s motor drive, then switch to transmit mode and trigger PocketWizard-connected remote flashes, all automatically. The sequence can be started by simply pressing the TEST button of any PocketWizard Transmitter. Remote cameras require remote shutter release cables.

Status Indicator/Battery Life Indicator
The PlusX features a tri-color LED status indicator that serves two functions. When the PlusX sends or receives a triggering signal, the LED will glow red. During normal operation, the indicator will blink a single green blink meaning it is operating normally and the battery life is above 50%. It will blink a double amber blink when the battery is below 50% but above 25% and it will blink three red blinks when the battery life is below 25% and it’s crucial to replace the batteries.

Transmit Only Mode
There are times when a photographer only wants their radio to transmit, usually when two or more photographers are sharing a set of lights. By enabling transmit only mode, users can disable the receive mode and auto relay functions to make sure their radio is just transmitting.

Range and Reliability
PocketWizard Plus radios are known for their range and reliability. Although the PlusX costs less than other PocketWizard radios, users will still get the range and reliability they expect from a PocketWizard product.

Sync Speed
Ultra-fast microprocessors allow for reliable sync speeds of 1/250 seond for focal plane shutters and 1/500 second for leaf shutters.

B&H has the PocketWizard PlusX Transceiver in stock.

MiniTT1 & FlexTT5 updated beta firmware release plan for new Canon and Nikon Cameras

So. Burlington, VT – As Canon and Nikon continue to release new cameras and flashes, PocketWizard Photo Products has established an evolving Firmware Release plan for the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 radios to address compatibility with these new products.

The MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 offer a comprehensive list of unique features such as HyperSync, Power Control with an AC3 ZoneController, Optimized Rear Curtain Sync and many others including our legendary broad-based reverse compatibility. These features are what differentiate PocketWizard radios from other wireless triggers. The MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 require specialized programming which is highly dependent on the internal coding of the camera or flash. When a new camera or flash is released, we must reverse engineer the new internal coding to make sure the timing of our features is compatible with the new hardware. This reverse engineering and testing can take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months before it meets our standards and can be released as a beta into the market for further testing. Some gear is easier to reverse engineer than others.

It is important to note that PocketWizard does not receive any inside information from either Nikon or Canon regarding the release of new gear. PocketWizard Photo Products must order new Nikon or Canon gear from a local dealer and wait for it to be shipped. Once the product is received at PocketWizard headquarters in Vermont, it is then thoroughly tested, reversed engineered by our firmware engineers, tested again and then tested yet again for compatibility.

In order to expedite the process, we will be releasing “rolling betas” which will then be rolled into production releases based on feedback during the beta phase. Although we cannot provide specific beta firmware release dates, what we can tell you is that a typical beta period is three to five weeks and a production release should fall shortly thereafter assuming nothing major was discovered during the beta process.

Prioritized rolling BETA release plan for MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 Firmware:

  1. MiniTT1/FlexTT5 BETA firmware release for Canon
    • Compatibility with Canon 1D X Camera*
  2. MiniTT1/FlexTT5 Beta firmware release for Nikon
    • Compatibility with Nikon D600 & Nikon D3200
  3. MiniTT1/FlexTT5 Beta firmware release for Canon
    • Compatibility with Canon T4i & Canon 6D

* Please note that the BETA firmware release for the Canon 1D X will have limited compatibility. The firmware release will include Manual Power Control and Manual HSS and HyperSync®. The beta release firmware for the Canon 1D X will not have the capability to perform TTL exposures.

The schedule above represents our BETA release plan. We will make decisions about official PRODUCTION releases as we go, depending on reverse engineering progress and field reports.

We intend to update the Nikon and Canon compatibility pages on wiki.pocketwizard.com on a regular basis. Any updates to the firmware release plan will also be updated on Facebook and Twitter.

So. Burlington, VT – August 27, 2012 - We have a version of the ControlTL firmware that includes compatibility for the 5D Mark III that is very promising. We are hard at work testing it with both the 5D Mark III and all the other previously compatible Canon cameras, flashes, and transmitters. Please keep in mind, the beta and the official release must be compatible with all currently supported cameras in addition to the 5D Mark III - we cannot separate one version out for just one particular camera.

Testing is going well and we are making progress every day. That being said a bug could pop up at any given moment and delay the release of the firmware. To complete our testing as quickly as possible we have dropped all other tasks in our support office to get this testing done. This means we’re not answering the phone, not responding to emails and not answering questions on Facebook for a few days. Although we are hopeful to have a release within the next couple of weeks, we cannot give any definite date on when this firmware will be available.

We are just as eager to provide full support for the 5D Mark III as you are to employ it in your photography. We recognize the popularity and importance of this camera and we fully appreciate the impact that this has on your workflow. Our goal is to deliver firmware that you will have confidence in.

PocketWizard Announces ControlTL Firmware Update

New features and free upgrades available now for MiniTT1® and FlexTT5® radios, both Canon and Nikon versions

So. Burlington, VT – LPA Design, manufacturers of PocketWizard Photo Products, the world leader in wireless control of cameras, flash lighting and light meters, announces today a new update to its ControlTLfirmware for both Nikon and Canon versions of its MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 radios. Available now, firmware version 3.150 for Nikon and 6.150 for Canon include several new features and updates including compatibility with more cameras and flash units, support for the Sekonic RT-32CTLmodule, and a new optimized rear curtain sync utility control. Any current owner of the ControlTL system can easily install these new features via USB connection and update for free using the PocketWizard Utility.

New firmware features include compatibility with the Nikon D4, D800 and D800E digital cameras and Nikon SB-910 Speedlight as well as compatibility with the Canon 600 EX-RT Speedlite and ST-E3-RT Speedlite Transmitter. Compatibility for the Canon 5D Mark III is not available at this time but firmware for this camera should be available in the near future.

“This latest release of ControlTL firmware further strengthens PocketWizard’s compatibility with Nikon and Canon brand digital cameras and flashes,” said Dave Schmidt, Vice President of Marketing at LPA Design, the company that manufacturers PocketWizard Photo Products. “Providing photographers with frequent important upgrades such as this is a very high priority for us because it allows owners of PocketWizard radios to stay current as new cameras and flash units are introduced.”

This update enables PocketWizard’s MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 radios to work with Sekonic RT-32CTL equipped light meters and trigger compatible flashes in ControlTL mode. This allows photographers with an AC3 ZoneController on their transmitting MiniTT1or FlexTT5 to set remote flash power levels on their Speedlights or other ControlTL flashes, and then meter those remote flashes using their compatible Sekonic light meter, all wirelessly within the ControlTL system. Special 2012 Summer Olympics MultiMAX Upgrade

Special 2012 London Summer Olympics Upgrade Offer for Custom ID owners with older MultiMAX radios

So. Burlington, VT - LPA Design, manufacturer of PocketWizard Photo Accessories, is announcing a special MULTIMAX UPGRADE offer exclusively to Custom ID owners.

Special London Olympics Offer:

If you own an older PocketWizard radio with a Custom ID in it, you should take advantage of this special offer to upgrade to the latest MultiMAX. A modern MultiMAX has the following benefits for the Olympics:

  • A USB port for firmware upgrades – we are working on a new firmware to help in multi-user Olympic environments
  • The ability to move your Custom ID to a different frequency. Older radios had the Custom ID pinned to one frequency - if the frequency was crowded you might miss triggers. The latest MultiMAX allows you to move among the available frequencies in your MultiMAX to move away from interference.
  • An ACC port for controlling the “half press” of your remote camera
  • And more!

From now until July 31st, you can upgrade your older Custom ID radio to a modern MultiMAX for $195. Just send your Custom ID radio to LPA Design and we will take care of the rest.

How do you know if you have an older MultiMAX? Hold down “A” on power-up – if your MultiMAX displays version 6.xx or earlier, you could benefit from an upgrade!

This offer is only available for MultiMAX or MAX radios with Custom IDs already installed. It is not for Plus, Plus II, Plus III, etc. This offer is only available directly from LPA Design.
