Canon Follows Up on Their Strong Showing at February's Big Game in New Jersey With Widespread Use by Imaging Professionals at the Soccer Tournament in Brazil
MELVILLE, N.Y., July 24, 2014 - Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is proud to announce that Canon broadcast lenses were the most widely used broadcast lenses covering the matches of the recent Soccer Tournament in Brazil. Furthermore, the professional photographers tasked with capturing the riveting goals, ravenous fans, colorful scenery and nail-biting moments of the soccer matches utilized Canon DSLR cameras and lenses more than any other brand.
This outstanding show of support for Canon equipment in Brazil follows Canon broadcast lenses being used extensively to broadcast The Big Game in New Jersey on February 2, 2014, as well as being the number one camera and lens choice for imaging professionals shooting from the sidelines of the game between Denver and Seattle. In support of professionals on the ground, the Canon Professional Services (CPS) team was on location at each of these sporting events, among countless others, to provide support to photographers, broadcasters and all imaging professionals.

Throughout the soccer matches in Brazil, Canon broadcast field lenses were utilized to deliver footage of the thrilling tournament. Canon broadcast field lenses represented approximately 90 percent share of all broadcast lenses used. Additionally, Canon broadcast lenses were used extensively to deliver The Big Game to more than 111 million television viewers.
A look to the sidelines in Brazil revealed a familiar sight to many sporting event fans — Canon EOS Digital SLR cameras, equipped with iconic white Canon telephoto EF lenses. Throughout the tournament, approximately 70 percent of imaging professionals chose Canon DSLRs and lenses to capture and share the memorable moments of these passionate and prideful soccer matches. Much like The Big Game, in which 75 percent of imaging professionals on the sideline of that gridiron matchup chose Canon equipment.
At each of the 12 stadiums that hosted Soccer matches in Brazil, CPS had teams of technical and professional representatives providing imaging professionals with convenient access to product support, equipment maintenance, and product loans.
Asana, Canon, Dropbox, Google, Newegg and SAP Announce Formation of New Cooperative Patent-Licensing Agreement
TOKYO, July 10, 2014—Asana, Canon Inc., Dropbox, Google, Newegg and SAP today announced the formation of the License on Transfer (LOT) Network, a cooperative patent-licensing agreement that will cut down on patent troll litigation and the growing practice of patent privateering.
Patent litigation reached an all-time peak last year, with more than 6,000 lawsuits filed. Most of those suits came from non-practicing entities, also known as patent trolls—companies that don’t have a business outside of licensing and litigating patents.
More than 70 percent of the patents used by trolls come from still-operating companies. Indeed, in a growing trend called privateering, companies are selling patents to trolls that then use those patents to attack other companies. In some cases, those companies arrange to get a cut of revenue generated from the trolls’ suits.
The LOT agreement is a new kind of royalty-free cross-license meant to address these growing systemic problems. Member companies receive a license when the patents are transferred out of the LOT group. That means that companies retain their right to enforce a patent so long as they retain ownership of it. However, as soon as it is sold, a license to the other members becomes effective, protecting them from attacks by the troll to which the patent was sold.
The agreement includes several other provisions that preserve a patent portfolio’s value, including carve-outs for certain M&A transactions and change of control.
The initial members of the LOT Network range from early-stage startups to established technology companies. Together they own almost 300,000 patent assets, generate more than $117 billion in revenue and employ more than 310,000 people.
"The LOT Network is a sort of arms control for the patent world," said Allen Lo, deputy general counsel for patents at Google. "By working together, we can cut down on patent litigation, allowing us to focus instead on building great products."

EOS C300 Feature Upgrade offering enhanced autofocusing capability is now available.
Details Now available from Canon is a feature upgrade for the EOS C300 Digital Video Camera that will offer an autofocus mode to help ensure sharp focus and smooth focus transitions. The upgrade provides a new Continuous AF (Autofocus) Function for all Canon EF autofocus Lenses, using Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology. A new AF Lock setting also lets you change the image framing while holding the desired focus. These critical focusing capabilities are designed to help reduce out of focus video while providing for smooth focus transitions and assist users when operating with small crews.

Research commissioned by Canon U.S.A. uncovers the counterfeit confidence trap in America
MELVILLE, N.Y., May 1, 2014 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, will unveil today the results of a 2013 Anti-Counterfeit Study it commissioned on U.S. consumers’ attitudes and perceptions of counterfeit consumer electronics in the U.S. The study reveals that while counterfeit consumer electronics are a significant concern to U.S. consumers, most seem to be unaware of the full impact and risks of their purchase and use. The study revealed that consumers trust their instincts, but seem to lack the understanding of the possible safety risks and the true long-term costs of counterfeit consumer electronics.
According to the Department of Homeland Security, $145 million worth of counterfeit consumer electronics entered the U.S. in 2013. The research commissioned by Canon reveals, however, that while three out of every four consumers surveyed were concerned about counterfeit consumer electronics, only about one in two believed they can accurately identify counterfeit consumer electronics.
“Most American consumers are unaware of the full risks associated with these potentially dangerous devices. Four in ten of the U.S. consumers surveyed don’t know counterfeit consumer electronics can harm them, and this lack of awareness leads to what Canon calls a ‘Confidence Trap’,” said Chuck Westfall, Technical Advisor, Professional Engineering & Solutions Division, Canon U.S.A, Inc. “Based on the survey, consumers seem overconfident in their ability to spot a fake, and as a result, are at risk of possible harm.”
The study revealed:
In 2013, 12 percent of the U.S. consumers surveyed knowingly bought fake consumer electronics, while 18 percent bought them unknowingly.
40 percent of U.S. consumers surveyed were unaware that counterfeit consumer electronics may harm them.
45 percent believed that counterfeit consumer electronics do the job just as well as genuine consumer electronics.
97 percent wanted more information so they can identify counterfeits.
Millennials surveyed were five times more likely than the Baby Boomers surveyed to purchase fake goods.
While the majority of millennials (72 percent) surveyed consider themselves very knowledgeable in identifying a counterfeit consumer electronics product, about one in four continues to unknowingly buy one.
Based on the survey results, 18 percent of U.S. consumer electronic purchasers surveyed say they have unknowingly purchased counterfeit consumer electronics this past year. Further, the study revealed, overconfident in their abilities, a significant proportion of consumers surveyed fell victim to counterfeit purchases, largely unaware that they could be putting themselves at risk of inferior product performance.
When it comes to purchase drivers, according to this, the majority of consumers surveyed overwhelmingly value product performance, quality, and safety when buying an electronic good. 82 percent of respondents cited product performance and 70 percent said product safety is important to them. It seems that purchasing counterfeits is therefore largely driven by a knowledge gap. For instance, close to half (45 percent) of consumers surveyed believe that a counterfeit product does the job just as well as the genuine product.
“One of the most significant revelations of this Anti-Counterfeit Study is our obligation to take action and educate consumers about the potential health and safety risks of counterfeit consumer electronics,” commented Westfall. “This research indicates that education can largely impact perceptions of counterfeit consumer electronics, and steer consumers away from making uninformed and misguided purchases. After learning about the facts, 71 percent of the U.S. consumers surveyed said that they were less likely to buy them.”
Canon is committed to bridging this education gap for the majority of American consumers who believe more can be done to combat the counterfeit consumer electronics market. Contrary to popular consumer belief, it is not exclusively the job of government, law enforcement or retailers to raise awareness. Prevention lies in the collaboration of all stakeholders and Canon is working to promote the continued education of consumers.
Today, Canon and the New York City College of Technology (City Tech) will host a panel discussion about the potential dangers of counterfeit consumer electronics. Event panelists include representatives from Canon U.S.A, City Tech College, Consumerist.com, U.S. Chamber of Commerece Global Intellectual Property Center and Underwriters Laboratories.
On April 23rd, Canon was also recognized by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Global Intellectual Property Center at the 2nd Annual IP Champions Conference in Washington D.C. for its Anti-Counterfeit Consumer Awareness Campaign.
Recent media reports have called attention to the disocovery of a security vulnerability in OpenSSL, an application widely used by network-connected devices and websites that encrypts information to enable secure communication. The vulnerability, known as the Heartbleed Bug, could result in the leak of information that was thought to be secure.
We have been evaluating Canon products equipped with network connectivity* as well as websites directly operated by Canon. At this time, however, we have not found any that are affected by this vulnerability.
We will work to further strengthen security measures to ensure that customers can continue using Canon products and websites with peace of mind.

TOKYO, Japan, April 30, 2014—Canon Inc. today celebrated an impressive lens-manufacturing milestone with the production on April 22, 2014, of the Company's 100-millionth EF-series interchangeable lens for EOS cameras—an EF200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x.
Production of interchangeable EF lenses for Canon EOS-series AF (autofocus) single-lens reflex cameras began in 1987 at the Company's Utsunomiya Plant, which continues to play a central role in Canon’s lens manufacturing operations. In May 2013, EF lens production surpassed the 90-million-unit mark and now, approximately eleven months later, the Company is commemorating its first-in-the-world achievement of having manufactured 100 million lenses.
Canon's proprietary EF lenses, launched in March 1987 along with the EOS SLR camera system, have continued to evolve since their introduction, leading the industry through the incorporation of a wide range of innovative technologies, including such world's firsts as the Ultrasonic Motor (USM), Image Stabilizer (IS) technology, and a multi-layered diffractive optical (DO) element. In May 2013, aiming to further expand the realm of photographic expression, the Company introduced the EF200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x, the world's first super-telephoto zoom lens with a built-in 1.4x extender that makes possible a 200-560 mm focal length range.

TOKYO, April 23, 2014—Three Canon camera products and one Canon technology were recognized with "Best Photo and Imaging Product" awards by the Technical Image Press Association (TIPA), representing 29 photo and imaging magazines from 16 countries across five continents. The four award-winners are: the EOS 70D digital SLR (DSLR) camera, the PowerShot G1 X Mark II digital compact camera, the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x super-telephoto zoom lens, and Dual Pixel CMOS autofocusing technology.
Best DSLR Advanced: EOS 70D Named "Best DSLR Advanced" by the TIPA jury, the Canon EOS 70D features an APS-C-size approximately 20.2-megapixel CMOS sensor and the DIGIC 5+ image processor, making possible a fast continuous shooting speed of up to approximately 7 frames per second and a maximum standard ISO of 12800,1 which can be extended up to ISO 25600. The camera is also equipped with a 19-point all cross-type AF system. Earning special praise, however, was the EOS 70D's Dual Pixel CMOS AF, which the judges called a "breakthrough." The innovative autofocusing technology makes possible improved tracking capabilities when shooting video to ensure smooth focusing performance similar to that achieved by video camcorders, and fast autofocusing performance when capturing stills during Live View shooting. Other features mentioned by the TIPA jury were the camera's Vari-angle touch-screen 3.0-inch Clear View LCD monitor II, which offers approximately 1.04-million-dot resolution, and built-in Wi-Fi, which allows image-sharing via CANON iMAGE GATEWAY as well as the transfer and saving of images to a smartphone using the EOS Remote application.2
Best Expert Compact Camera: PowerShot G1 X Mark II Crowned "Best Expert Compact Camera," Canon's flagship-model PowerShot G1 X Mark II features a 1.5-inch approximately 12.8-megapixel CMOS sensor, a fast f/2.0-f/3.9 lens with 24-120 mm (35 mm film equivalent) 5x optical zoom, and a variety of custom functions and handling features. The TIPA judges noted that the camera offers a host of shooting and recording modes that, in addition to JPEG images, allow users to record 14-bit RAW data, and delivers fast and accurate autofocusing performance through the inclusion of 31 AF points. The G1 X Mark II's Dual Control Rings on the lens barrel let users easily change exposure compensation and other parameter settings while the 3.0-inch tilt-type touch panel LCD provides enhanced composition options. Best Professional DSLR Lens: EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x The EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x was granted the "Best Professional DSLR Lens" title by the TIPA judges, who highlighted the merits offered by the super-telephoto zoom lens's built-in 1.4x extender, which lets users instantly change the lens's zoom range from 200-400 mm to 280-560 mm with the single flip of a switch.4 The feature is particularly beneficial in shooting situations where it is not possible to quickly change lenses and also enables users to protect their digital SLR camera equipment by not having to expose the camera image sensor and other delicate interior components to the risk of dust or high humidity. The lens incorporates one fluorite lens element and four UD (ultra-low dispersion) lens elements, and employs a 9-blade circular aperture. The Power Focus mode facilitates smooth and quiet focus shifts, an essential feature for filmmaking, while the lens's construction makes it highly resistant to dust and water.
Best Imaging Innovation: CMOS sensor enabling Dual Pixel CMOS AF Earning TIPA's "Best Imaging Innovation" honors was the CMOS sensor that supports Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS autofocusing technology. Dual Pixel CMOS AF, a phase-difference AF technology on the image sensor plane, employs a CMOS sensor on which all of the effective pixels are able to perform both imaging and phase-difference AF.5 Compared with the AF systems employed in previous EOS-series models, Dual Pixel CMOS AF makes possible dramatically improved AF performance during Live View shooting and when shooting video. The jury noted that the technology achieves "greatly enhanced" AF performance in terms of speed and smoothness because Live View shooting can be used in a manner similar to using the camera's viewfinder. Featured in the EOS 70D digital SLR camera, Dual Pixel CMOS AF supports outstanding AF performance with 103 models6 of Canon EF lenses (including earlier models and models available outside of Japan). Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, shared today that its parent company, Canon Inc., announced a software upgrade for the EOS C500 digital cinema camera (launched in October 2012), part of Canon’s Cinema EOS System lineup of professional digital cinematography products, that will enable users to more efficiently on-set production workflows. The Company plans to offer the free-of-charge Cinema RAW Development software upgrade* starting in October 2014.
The new Cinema RAW Development 1.3 software, currently under development, will deliver enhanced shooting workflows, including the on-set playback and confirmation of 4K RAW video, when using the EOS C500 camera.
Through collaboration with Intel, Cinema RAW Development 1.3 will deliver improved performance using a beta version of the Intel Media SDK 2014 Professional Camera Pack, making possible faster development of 4K Cinema RAW data when using a PC equipped with Intel Iris Pro graphics. Canon’s software upgrade will support greater workflow efficiencies for 4K RAW data by enabling real-time playback with playback speeds of up to 24 frames per second (fps). To date, previewing 4K RAW video footage on a notebook PC and other compact computer devices had been difficult because of the slow fps rate and the need for tremendous processing power, which was only available with a workstation PC. Now, with a combination of upgrades to Canon’s Cinema RAW Development 1.3 software, compatible with the Intel Media SDK 2014 Professional Camera Pack, and a PC with Intel Iris Pro graphics, Canon users will be able to more quickly preview their 4K video footage while on a shoot.

The Itasca facility features repair and maintenance operations for Canon’s extensive lineup of professional cameras, including Cinema EOS and EOS Digital SLR cameras, high-definition camcorders, and all of Canon’s lenses, including EF series photography lenses, Cinema lenses and broadcast lenses. Repair operations at the facility include four state-of-the-art camera body and lens adjustment rooms, Canon’s most advanced adjustment and calibration equipment, spare parts inventory, and experienced repair staff.

Canon, a company that has continuously produced cameras since its founding in 1937, began producing and marketing digital cameras in the mid 1990s. In 1995, when film cameras were still the norm, Canon launched its first digital camera, the professional-model EOS DCS 3* digital SLR camera.
At the time, compact cameras were leading the digital shift within the camera industry. In 1996, Canon announced its market entry with the introduction of the PowerShot 600, the Company's first compact digital camera. In 2000, amid the market's rapid growth, Canon launched the IXY DIGITAL (PowerShot S100 or DIGITAL IXUS in markets outside of Japan), featuring a ground-breaking compact, stylish body design that set the trend for compact digital cameras.
Subsequent models released by the Company reflected the diverse evolution of compact digital cameras with models becoming increasingly compact and lightweight, achieving higher sensitivity, incorporating more enhanced automatic functions, and realizing greater network connectivity. This evolution fueled robust growth as Canon's cumulative production of compact digital cameras surpassed the 100-million-unit mark in 2008, and broke through the 200-million-unit threshold in December 2013.
