From Canon:

CANON INTRODUCES THE RF100-300MM F2.8 L IS USM TO ITS LENS LINEUP

The new lens combines the flexibility of a zoom lens with the quality of a telephoto lens

MELVILLE, NY, April 20, 2023 – Today, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced the launch of the RF100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM lens, answering calls from photojournalists and professional level customers for a modern 300mm f/2.8 equivalent lens.

“This lens is an absolute game changer! It gives you the most incredible range, but without sacrificing the f/2.8 aperture. To have this kind of performance at your fingertips is incredible!” Roberto Valenzuela, fashion and wedding photographer

For decades, the 300mm f/2.8 telephoto lens has been an industry standard for photojournalists, professionals, and aspiring enthusiast photographers due to its outstanding image quality, excellent speed for indoor shooting, and relatively light weight for hand-holding. Now, with the launch of the RF100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM, Canon delivers the flexibility of a zoom lens design with the truly outstanding quality of a 300mm f/2.8 L-series telephoto lens. Exceeding the reach and potential of traditional 70-200mm lenses, and adding zoom flexibility to its Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS predecessor, the RF100-300mm F2.8 L IS USM lens brings new value to customers with the following features:

  • Wide Focal Range—100-300mm range
  • Extended Zoom—Optional RF1.4x and 2x extenders are supported with this lens, enabling a zoom range of up to 600mm

  • Weather and Dust Resistant—Durable in various environmental conditions
  • Compact and Lightweight Design—Despite capabilities to zoom over 300mm, this lens is unusually lightweight, just barely heavier than the EF300mm f/2.8L IS II

“I love this lens! It’s incredibly lightweight, versatile, and sharp. Toss on the 2x extender and you can snipe gorgeous frames at a distance, especially with the built in image stabilizer. This lens is going to change the game for live concerts, weddings, and so much more.”

Ben Hagarty, Grammy award-winning cinematographer

This telephoto zoom lens is ideal for professionals who use a Canon EOS R3, EOS R5 or EOS R6 Mark II full-frame mirrorless camera, but can also be a catalyst for users who have developed into serious, aspirational enthusiasts and are looking to step beyond their traditional telephoto lens experience. Best use cases include, but are not limited to, indoor sports, motorsports, outdoor fashion, video and cinema, photojournalism and theater work. For high-level shooters and videographers particularly working in low-light settings and seeking a hand-holdable solution, this lens provides the total answer.

Canon Extends Paid Add-On Applications Availability to CR-N300, CR-N500, and CR-X300 4K PTZ Cameras Via a Firmware Update

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 4, 2023 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced that the “Add-On Applications System” for PTZ (Pan-Tilt-Zoom) remote cameras will be available for the CR-N300, CR-N500, and CR-X300. Available through a future firmware update, the Add-On Applications System will provide access to new paid video production features such as auto tracking and auto loop. The auto tracking application will give users the ability to automatically pan, tilt, and zoom to track moving subjects, and the auto loop application will allow users to program and automate repeated camera movements.

These paid add-on applications uniquely position Canon in the PTZ market as the applications run from within the camera itself, instead of other solutions in the market requiring external devices to operate functions like auto tracking. With the addition of the Add-On Applications System, customers can now directly add the new capabilities to the PTZ camera, providing a better value for end-users.

Auto Tracking Add-On Application

The auto tracking paid add-on application enables automatic tracking according to a subject’s movements. As the subject moves, the camera will pan, tilt, and zoom to maintain the subject’s composition in the frame. This added function helps to reduce the camera operator’s workload, letting them focus on other tasks such as camera switching and streaming, and allows for multi-camera shoots with fewer people on set.

The auto tracking is highly responsive, allowing for full body, upper body, and head and torso tracking at both slow and normal walking speeds, and full body and upper body tracking at fast walking speed. In addition, the auto tracking application provides users with a wide range of adjustment functions such as composition, tracking sensitivity, priority display area, fixed viewing angle area, tracking target auto select, pan/tilt halting area, initial position, auto select exclusion, and pan/tilt operation control.

The new auto tracking add-on application is ideal for end-users in markets such as house of worship and corporate event streaming, educational workshops and lectures, and broadcast and corporate interviews.

Auto Loop Add-On Application

The auto loop paid add-on application helps automate repeated camera movements, potentially lessening the burden on camera operators. Camera operators will now have the flexibility to select between two repeated movements, loop or back-and-forth, based on needs and the shooting environment. It also provides the ability to enable smooth acceleration and deceleration when starting and stopping movement between two preset positions for more professional camera movements. For added convenience, camera operators can adjust settings such as position, route, preview, and start from one screen.

The new auto loop add-on application is ideal for consistent smooth on-air movements for end-users in markets such as house of worship and corporate event streaming, broadcast and over-the-top (OTT) sports and interview streaming, and commercial production.

Additional Firmware Features

In addition to adding the “Add-On Application System” to the cameras, the firmware update for each camera will also provide several additional features and improvements that shows Canon’s commitment to the professional video market. Among the improvements is the addition of SRT and FreeD protocol support to the CR-X300 camera.

Pricing and Availability

The Firmware Update for all three PTZ cameras to add the “Add-On Applications System” is scheduled to be available in July 2023. The paid Auto Tracking Application is scheduled to be available in August 2023 for the CR-N300 and CR-N500 for $1200.00*. The paid Auto Loop Tracking Application is scheduled to be available in August 2023 for the CR-N300 and CR-N500, and CR-X300 for $800.00*.

Get the Canon PTX camera firmware updates at B&H.

*Specifications, availability and prices are subject to change without notice. Both paid add-on applications will be available for a free, no commitment 30-day trial.

Canon Developing World’s First Ultra-High-Sensitivity ILC Equipped With SPAD Sensor, Supporting Precise Monitoring Through Clear Color Image Capture of Subjects Several Miles Away, Even In Darkness

MELVILLE, N.Y., April 4, 2023 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced that its parent company, Canon Inc., is developing the MS-500, the world’s first1 ultra-high-sensitivity interchangeable-lens camera (ILC) equipped with a 1.0 inch Single Photon Avalanche Diode (SPAD) sensor2 featuring the world’s highest pixel count of 3.2 megapixels3. The camera leverages special characteristics of SPAD sensors to achieve superb low-light performance while also utilizing broadcast lenses (sold separately) that feature high performance at telephoto-range focal lengths. Thanks to such advantages, the MS-500 camera is expected to be ideal for such applications as high-precision monitoring.

There is a growing need for high-precision monitoring systems in such environments as national borders, seaports, airports, train stations, power plants, and other key infrastructure facilities, in order to quickly identify targets even under adverse conditions including darkness in which human eyes cannot see, and from long distances.

The currently in-development MS-500 camera is equipped with a 1.0 inch SPAD sensor that helps reduce noise, making it possible to produce clear, full-color HD imaging even in extreme low-light environments. When paired with Canon’s extensive range of broadcast lenses, which excel at super-telephoto image capture, the camera is capable of accurately capturing subjects with precision in extreme low-light environments, even from great distances. For example, the camera may be used for nighttime monitoring of seaports, thanks to its ability to spot vessels that are several miles away, thus enabling identification and high-precision monitoring of vessels in or around the seaport.

With CMOS sensors, which are commonly used in conventional modern digital cameras, each pixel measures the amount of light that reaches the pixel within a given time. However, the readout of the accumulated electronic charge contains electronic noise, which may diminish image quality, due to the process by which accumulated light is measured. This could lead to degradation of the resulting image, particularly when used in low-light environments. SPAD sensors employ a technology known as “photon counting” in which light particles (photons) that enter each individual pixel are counted. When even a single photon enters a pixel it is instantly amplified approximately 1 million times and output as an electrical signal. Every single one of these photons can be digitally counted, thus making possible zero-noise during signal readout—a key advantage of SPAD sensors4. Because of this technological advantage, the MS-500 camera will be able to operate even under nighttime environments with no ambient starlight5, and will also be capable of accurately detecting subjects with minimal illumination and capture clear color images.

The MS-500 camera employs the bayonet lens mount (based on BTA S-1005B standards) which is widely used in the broadcast lens industry. This enables the camera to be used with Canon’s extensive range of broadcast lenses, which feature superb optical performance. As a result, the camera will be able to recognize and capture subjects that are several miles away.

Canon MS-500 Camera Back

Going forward, Canon will continue to pursue R&D and work to create products that could surpass the ability of the human eye and contribute to the safety and security of society. Canon has a long history of comprehensive imaging — optical, sensor, image processing and image analysis — technologies.

Canon plans to begin selling the MS-500 in 2023*.

The Canon MS-500 camera will be displayed as a reference exhibit at the Canon booth during the 2023 NAB Show for broadcast and filmmaking equipment, to be held in Las Vegas from Sunday, April 16 to Wednesday, April 19.

1 Among color cameras. As of April 2, 2023. Based on Canon research.
2 Among SPAD sensors for imaging use. As of April 2, 2023. Based on Canon research.
3 Total pixel count: 3.2 million pixels. Effective pixel count: 2.1 million pixels.
4 For more information on how SPAD sensors operate and how they differ from CMOS sensors, please visit the following website: https://global.canon/en/technology/spad-sensor-2021.html
5 Ambient starlight is equivalent to approximately 0.02 lux. A nighttime environment with no ambient starlight is equivalent to approximately 0.007 lux.

From Canon Inc.:

Canon celebrates 20th consecutive year of No. 1 share of global interchangeable-lens digital camera market

TOKYO, March 28, 2023—Canon Inc. announced today that the company's interchangeable-lens digital cameras (digital SLR and mirrorless cameras) have maintained the No. 1 share of the global market for 20 consecutive years1 from 2003 to 2022.

Canon develops the key imaging system components featured in its EOS series of digital interchangeable-lens cameras—CMOS image sensors, image processors and interchangeable lenses—under the core concept of, "Speed, Comfort and High Image Quality." Putting together a wide-ranging product lineup—from high-performance flagship models that are highly trusted by professionals to entry-level models that allow users to enjoy high-image-quality shooting with easy operation, as well as a rich selection of RF and EF series lenses that make possible a wealth of creative expression—Canon continues to support the diverse needs of customers.

During the dawn of digital SLR cameras, Canon introduced its breakthrough EOS Kiss Digital (EOS Digital Rebel or EOS 300D in other regions) in September 2003. This groundbreaking camera, which was competitively priced and featured a compact, lightweight design, became the engine for growth in the digital SLR market, capturing the top share of the global market and heralding the age of digital SLR cameras. Since that time, Canon has continued to launch a range of groundbreaking products, including the professional-model EOS-1D series and the EOS 5D series, which paved the way for digital SLR video recording. Canon's desire to further expand the boundaries of visual expression led to its next-generation EOS R System, launched in October 2018, that includes the EOS R5—the first camera to feature 8K video recording2—released in July 2020 and the EOS R3 in November 2021, which features tracking of fast-moving subjects and continuous shooting performance. In addition, Canon launched the EOS VR System, designed to record video for virtual reality content, in December 2021.

In 2022, Canon announced the EOS R7 (released in June 2022) and EOS R10 (released in July 2022) the first APS-C size models in the EOS R Series, and the EOS R6 Mark II full-frame camera (released in December 2022) that features advanced AF functionality and superb video capabilities, alongside six new RF lenses3. Canon RF-S 55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM Lens

Alongside the camera bodies, Canon will release two new lenses. The RF-S lens line, optimized for the smaller APS-C sensor size, expands with the Canon RF-S55-210mm F5-7.1 IS STM lens. This is a telephoto zoom, giving coverage equivalent to an 88–336mm lens on a full-frame camera. The lens opens the door to telephoto photography and videography, with 4.5 stops optical image stabilization, and close-focusing that can fill the frame with a subject roughly 2x3 inches in size (at its 210mm zoom setting, and minimum focus distance). And it does all this in an incredibly lightweight and compact package.

Canon RF 24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM Lens

The Canon RF24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM is a new, compact standard zoom lens for full-frame EOS R-series cameras. Ranging from true wide-angle to traditional “standard lens” coverage at 50mm, the lens is a travel friendly design with an extremely compact exterior. The RF24-50mm F4.5-6.3 IS STM lens is just over 2 inches long when fully retracted, and under 3.5 inches when extended — weighing less than half a pound. Optical Image Stabilization, with 4.5 stops of shake-correction, further enhances its appeal for video and still-image shooting. It’s also useable on an APS-C sensor Canon camera, where the lens' effective coverage is equivalent to what a 38–80mm would deliver on a full-frame camera.

CANON INTRODUCES NEW ERA FOR ITS EOS WEBCAM UTILITY SOFTWARE, BRINGING NEW POSSIBILITIES TO SUBSCRIBERS

Taking Video Conference and Live Stream Capabilities to the Next Level, the Value-Adding Subscription Version Unlocks Exclusive Features

MELVILLE, NY, November 9, 2022 – By enabling several of Canon’s extensive lineup of EOS cameras to provide high quality video for virtual meetings and other live streaming applications, EOS Webcam Utility software was a lifeline when it was released in early 2020, when video conferencing was imperative for business operations and everyday communication. Since then, virtual video has become vital in everyday life and Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is excited to unveil EOS Webcam Utility Pro, which extends upon the success of the original software, bringing video conferencing and live streaming capabilities into an exciting new era.

The original EOS Webcam Utility software was downloaded for free by millions across the globe, with numbers rising daily, as hybrid work has become the new normal. When developing this enhanced version of EOS Webcam Utility software, Canon listened to users’ concerns and preferences found through the original version and has incorporated comments and feedback that were heard through social media, customer comments and media inquiries.

EOS Webcam Utility Pro adds a subscription that provides the option to unlock extensive new capabilities ranging from multiple camera connections, wireless connectivity, greater camera and content control, high-res upscaling in full HD mode, a maximum frame rate up to 60fps, the ability to output to multiple channels simultaneously and more. For vloggers, gamers, news anchors, cooking influencers, and the many others who rely on video, having multiple camera set-ups (like a front, side, and top-down angle) can be the key to providing more detail to the viewer. For live streamers, running multiple channels at the same time can help them reach larger audiences across YouTube, Facebook Live, and other key social and streaming channels.

There are also various settings that improve customization possibilities including various layout options, transitions between scenes, and watermark insertion, which can help users preserve the ownership of their content. Whether it is for personal or professional use, these new features can take video quality and capability to the next level.

The basic features of EOS Webcam Utility Pro software, which allows users to utilize many EOS cameras as high-quality webcams with popular web conferencing applications, will be available for free, while paid subscriptions to EOS Webcam Utility Pro, which unlock many additional special features, including, but not limited to the items mentioned above will be available with a monthly subscription for $4.99 per month or an annual subscription for $49.99 per year – both options offer a 30-day trial period. The software will be available exclusively to customers in the U.S.A.

Boundless Creativity: Canon Announces the Canon EOS R6 Mark II Hybrid Full-Frame Camera

New RF135mm F1.8 L IS USM Lens and Speedlite EL-5 Flash Unit Also Announced

MELVILLE, NY, November 2, 2022 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced today the launch of the new EOS R6 Mark II camera body, Canon’s new hybrid full-frame camera, and the first EOS R series full-frame mirrorless to take the step into the second generation. In addition, Canon is also introducing the new RF135mm F1.8 L IS USM mid-telephoto portrait lens and Speedlite EL-5 flash unit.

Ideal for advanced amateurs and featuring user-friendly functions, the EOS R6 Mark II camera is a high-performance hybrid camera that’s designed to capture decisive moments in both photo and video formats. It will satisfy a wide range of needs including professional production, vlogging, still pictures, filmmaking, and more. The camera is also well-suited for various photography subjects such as portrait, landscape, sports and wildlife. With the EOS R6 Mark II camera, creativity has virtually no borders.

As the market share leader for mirrorless cameras in the United States through Q3 of 2022[i], Canon continues to strengthen its innovative EOS R lineup with the new EOS R6 Mark II camera. The EOS R6 Mark II offers enhanced video and photo functions, such as in-body Image Stabilization, as well as specifications that can satisfy video production needs, such as controlled focusing.

“As a filmmaker who is always on the move, I need a camera I can trust in a multitude of environments as well as keeping up with my fast paced style of shooting and the new Canon EOS R6 Mark II does just that.” said Canon Co-Lab Creator, Sam Newton.

Canon EOS R6 Mark II Body

In addition to its compact size and ease of use, the EOS R6 Mark II camera also features:

  • 24.2 megapixels, full-frame image sensor
  • 4K 59.94p video recording
  • External 6K RAW video recording / Internal 4K video recording oversampled from 6K
  • High-speed burst shooting
  • Canon Log 3 maximizing dynamic range
  • Autofocus (AF): highly accurate subject detection with human, animal[ii], vehicle and automatic settings
  • Horses, trains, and airplanes are newly detectable through the use of deep learning technology
  • Continuous movie recording that exceeds 30 minutes
  • Up to 12 frames per second mechanical shutter
  • Up to 40 frames per second with electronic shutter
  • In-body Image Stabilization as effective as up to 8 stops faster shutter speed[iii]

Canon RF 135mm F1.8 L IS USM Lens

Alongside the new camera body, Canon has announced a new addition to its growing line of innovative RF lenses – the RF135mm F1.8 L IS USM. This is a fixed focal length mid-telephoto portrait lens that is compatible with any EOS R-series camera. The RF135mm F1.8 L IS USM achieves beautiful and generous bokeh with the large-diameter F1.8 and comes equipped with in-lens Image Stabilization. The coordinated control of this IS coupled with the in-body IS present in the EOS R6 Mark II camera and other EOS R equipped IBIS cameras helps reduce camera shake and empowers photographers to express a feel of motion when shooting in dark areas with slow shutter speeds.

“The image quality and super smooth bokeh out of the new RF135mm F1.8 L IS USM lens is absolutely spectacular and superior to the EF version.” said Canon Explorer of Light, Vanessa Joy.

Canon Speedlite EL-5 Flash

Additionally, Canon has announced the new Speedlite EL-5 flash unit, designed for superior compatibility with the new EOS R6 Mark II. The Speedlite EL-5 is Canon’s first flash product compatible with the new multi-function shoe present in the EOS R6 Mark II, EOS R3, EOS R7 and EOS R10 cameras.

“The new Canon Speedlite EL-5 flash will give that magical kiss of light that brings a picture to life and illuminates your creative vision.” said Canon Explorer of Light, Bob Davis.

Canon has released third quarter 2022 financial results to the Investor Relations page.

Imaging System Relevant Quotes from the Presentation Material

However, in the third quarter, by further promoting design changes and the procurement of alternative parts, we were largely able to produce products in the volume we planned for. The increase in product supply led to higher unit sales in each business and coupled with the yen’s depreciation, revenue increased for the seventh consecutive quarter, to 996.1 billion yen or 19.5%.

As for operating profit, which measures the results of core business activities, in addition to the increase in sales volume and the yen’s depreciation, by partially reflecting the rise in material and logistical costs in selling prices, sales significantly increased to 81.4 billion yen or 38.7%.

Due to rapid depreciation of the yen, we incurred foreign exchange losses on foreigncurrency-denominated borrowings of the parent company made through the Group’s internal financing system. Though this caused income before income taxes to be down slightly, net income rose 9.7% to 54.1 billion yen.

As for Imaging, the unit sales of interchangeable lens cameras, through a recovery in product supply, thanks to the same abatement of material shortages, returned to growth. This and continued strong sales of interchangeable lenses, contributed to a 32% increase in revenue. As for operating profit, an increase in the proportion of sales attributable to the highly profitable EOS R system of mirrorless cameras and lenses, increased profitability to 18.0%.

As for the global economy, we have not been seeing any signs that historically high inflation, due to the shortage of goods and rise in energy costs, is abating. And for the foreseeable future, we expect monetary tightening and economic slowdown around the world to continue.

In contrast, we are not seeing any significant change in demand for cameras and commercial printing.

Demand for cameras remains solid, even amid economic slowdown, thanks to the launch of new mirrorless models and interchangeable lenses by each company. As a result, we expect the market in 2022 to be 5.45 million units, a slight increase compared to last year. In the third quarter, thanks to the higher volume of product supply and the addition of new models, namely the EOS R7 and EOS R10, mirrorless cameras that incorporate APS-C size sensors, we posted double-digit growth in unit sales, and coupled with an increase in lens sales, a significant increase in overall revenue.

Regarding our unit sales projection for the full year, we maintained our previous projection of 2.8 million units as we will not be able to supply enough products to meet demand. Going forward, we will continue to stimulate demand by steadily strengthening our lineup of EOS R series mirrorless cameras. Cameras that incorporate full-frame sensors, like the EOS R5 and EOS R6, continue to enjoy strong support from professionals and advanced amateurs. Additionally, the 2 new cameras that incorporate APS-C size sensors, with their light-weight and small form factor appeal, are encouraging users who want to enjoy serious photography to switch from SLR cameras or step up from entry models. We have also expanded our range of RF lenses to 32 models, providing users a variety of options.

Going forward, we will continue efforts to expand our market share and maintain high profitability by building a more robust EOS R system lineup.

From the Q&A:

Q3. What are the future prospects for the camera market?

A3. We expect the camera market to hover around 5 million units in the future. As many users are professionals or advanced amateurs, and as the number of applications for commercial-use increases, we expect cameras to become increasingly more high-end and more value-added.

Formalizing a service that has long been available? This just in from Canon USA:

Canon Precision Alignment

Canon camera systems and lenses are manufactured to extremely high precision standards for the ultimate image quality. Over time, however, small movements in components caused by frequent or heavy use can result in tiny changes in focus accuracy.

For reliable, pin-sharp focus, we can match the autofocus (AF) on select Canon lens and camera combinations. Using precision tools and expertise, we will either adjust the camera to match the lens or vice versa to restore optimal focus.

Benefits of Autofocus Alignment

Take a look at the images below to see how matching the autofocus on your lens and camera together make a difference.
