Lightroom Mobile for iOS 2.3

Lightroom for iOS 2.3 is now available, bringing with it a few important improvements and bug fixes. Most notably, we’ve taken steps to reduce the amount of steps that it takes to edit a photo from your camera roll. We heard from a number of users that editing and sharing a single photo was really important, so we made it possible to start editing immediately with a single photo. Importing multiple photos was also made easier by being able to swipe across a series of photos directly. By making it possible to start editing directly, you no longer have to find a photo, import it, find it again, and then start editing, so common workflows should be improved considerably.

We’re of course constantly working on ways to improve the many different workflows in Lightroom for iOS, and have a number of improvements in the pipeline. Let us know in the comments here what you think about this update as we all as what improvements you’d like to see in future builds of Lightroom for iOS.

Lightroom mobile 2.3 is available immediately for iPhones and iPads from the App Store.

The Creative Cloud Photography Plan (Photoshop CC & Lightroom CC) is an excellent value at only $9.99/month.

Virtual Reality, Character Animation, Sound Innovation Comes To Creative Cloud

SAN JOSE, Calif. — April 13, 2016 — The way consumers access and view content has undergone sweeping changes. Media and entertainment companies, along with creative professionals, are under increasing pressure to find new ways to create, deliver and monetize content. They must also adapt to rapidly evolving technology advancements, including high-resolution capture, new delivery formats and virtual reality to name a few. Also, enterprises are dealing with an explosion of content demands from constituencies and need to integrate high-impact content types, like video, into their communications strategies.

Ahead of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) Show next week, Adobe (Nasdaq:ADBE) has revealed new features across its Creative Cloud tools for video editing, motion graphics, audio and collaboration. Media and entertainment companies are combining these advanced content creation capabilities with Adobe Primetime to help deliver TV and video content across screens. With Adobe’s digital marketing tools TV networks and pay-TV providers can drive viewer acquisition, engagement and monetization as audiences embrace “over the top” (OTT) content via connected devices such as Apple TV, Sony PlayStation, Roku and Microsoft Xbox. At NAB, Adobe will demonstrate the updated tools and new workflows at booth #SL3910, South Hall (lower) in the Las Vegas Convention Center and at over 120 partner booths from April 18-21.

Adobe Creative Cloud video tools are becoming the go-to source for film editors of both award-winning Hollywood and indie films. The most recent example is Deadpool, the 20th Century FOX blockbuster which shattered box office records. The post-production team from Deadpool will discuss their state-of-the-art workflows and why they chose Adobe Premiere Pro CC in a Creative Master Series panel at NAB on April 19 from 4:15–5 p.m. PT.

Upcoming productions using Premiere Pro CC include Mindhunter, David Fincher’s new series for Netflix, and 6 Below directed by Scott Waugh and starring Josh Hartnett, which is currently shooting in 6K RED and will be edited natively in Premiere Pro.

Creative Cloud video tools are also powering a new generation of content delivered via social channels like YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.

"The videos we make at RocketJump are pure entertainment,” said Freddie Wong, Founder of RocketJump, the hybrid studio/production company behind the popular RocketJump YouTube channel with nearly 8 million subscribers and 1.3 billion views. “We've been users of Adobe's Creative Cloud for years and love the new features coming soon. In addition to editing native footage in Premiere Pro and creating awesome visual effects in After Effects, we use Photoshop for graphics, Audition to sweeten audio, Media Encoder to export content, and now Creative Cloud Libraries to share assets.”

Immerse Yourself In Creativity

Adobe continues to deliver technology that opens unimagined creative opportunities for video and film production, and now, immersive experiences. In the next release of Creative Cloud – available in early summer – Premiere Pro CC will add new virtual reality capabilities, including “field of view” mode for spherical stitched media. In addition, thanks to Adobe Stock integration into CC apps, customers are already experiencing productivity increases of 10 times, when adding stock content into creative projects, including video*. In the upcoming release, Adobe Stock will have enhanced connections with CC apps and new workflows will enable Adobe Bridge and Lightroom users to contribute to the Adobe Stock marketplace directly from within the application.

Other feature highlights coming soon to Creative Cloud include:

  • Edit immediately during ingest allows Premiere Pro CC users to get straight to work, while importing their video and audio files in the background.
  • Powerful proxy workflows in Premiere Pro CC and Adobe Media Encoder CC enable users to easily work with heavy 8K, HDR and HFR media, so editors can switch between native and proxy formats freely – even on lightweight machines.
  • Enhanced Lumetri Color tools within Premiere Pro CC adds HSL Secondaries to expand the editor’s toolkit for making color correction and adjustment easier for all filmmakers.
  • New video and audio preview engine in After Effects CC delivers superior playback of cached frames for a smooth experience.
  • Easier and more efficient Character Animator includes a simplified puppet creation process that enables users to easily tag puppet layers easily and record multiple takes of a character’s movement. Users can animate puppets to respond to motion and trigger animation accordingly.
  • New Essential Sound panel in Audition CC enables anyone to mix audio content for professional results.
  • Quickly find Adobe Stock assets with new filtered search in Creative Cloud Libraries. Licensed assets in your library are now badged for easy identification, videos are displayed with duration and format information, and saved videos are linked to video previews on the Adobe Stock site.
“There’s rapid change happening in the digital landscape with video now the fastest growing media type across social media platforms and OTT shaking up broadcast and film,” said Bryan Lamkin, executive vice president and general manager, Digital Media at Adobe. “Adobe is transforming the industry with Creative Cloud and Primetime by helping customers create beautiful content to engage viewers and technologies that monetize content that audiences care about.”

Pricing and Availability

At NAB, Adobe is previewing the next major updates to Creative Cloud. These updates are expected to ship in the coming months. The company is offering Adobe Creative Cloud for U.S. $49.99 a month.

From Adobe:

Lightroom on the web makes it possible for you to access all of your Lightroom images from nearly any computer around the world, and today we’re announcing the addition of Technology Previews, a series of features that will let you test drive new functionality before it’s officially available. The first Technology Preview we’re making available is Search, which coupled with our new image analysis technology, lets you search through any image you have synchronized online, either with Lightroom for mobile, Lightroom on the web, or with Lightroom desktop through a synchronized collection. We’ll be releasing new Technology Previews as they’re ready, which you’ll be able to use and even provide feedback on the functionality, helping to shape the feature.

To access search, launch Lightroom on the web, and log in. Then, click on the Lr menu in the top left to open the menu and select Technology Preview. Toggling Search on will start indexing your photos, which makes it possible for you to search through your photos. Don’t worry, at no time will anyone else be able to search through or find your photos. Searching is only available in English for now, but will be available in other languages once we launch the final feature. The functionality will also grow and improve before we release it, adding in the ability to search through an image’s metadata and more, making the search even more powerful and able to find a specific image precisely. Try searching your library for things like food, temples, flowers, animals, and more.

Using Lightroom on the web, you can organize your images, flag and add star ratings, perform basic edits using the same quality found in Lightroom desktop and Lightroom for mobile, and share your photos and collections with your friends, family, and clients.

We’re eager to hear what you think about search and look forward to sharing more Technology Previews with you in the near future.

The Creative Cloud Photography Plan (Photoshop CC & Lightroom CC) is an excellent value at only $9.99/month.

From Adobe:

Lightroom 2.2 for iOS is here, and brings a bunch of improvements, including an oft-requested feature: full resolution output.

With version 2.2, we added in the ability for Lightroom mobile to output full resolution files for any file that was either captured on the device or added to the device, either through the camera connection kit, transferred via Wi-Fi from a camera directly, or transferred to the device via services like email, Dropbox, or Google Drive. Additionally, any files that were added directly to an iPhone or iPad are transferred in full resolution to other mobile devices signed into the same account. This way, files captured with your iPhone are available for further editing and exporting from your iPad, in full resolution and vice-versa.

One of my favorite workflows is shooting with my camera and transferring to my iPhone for quick editing and sharing. The photo in this post was shot the last time I was in Japan for cherry blossoms, and after reading about how cherry blossom season is going to be extra early this year, I felt it was finally time to finish the image. I transferred the file via Wi-Fi to my iPhone, imported it into Lightroom mobile, edited the file, and exported. Of course, our blog then down sampled the image, but that’s a different story…

The full list of improvements are:

  • New: Full resolution output. Now, export and share photos that were captured on your device or that you added to your device at full resolution.
  • Updated: 3D Touch support in the Camera Roll browser view. Quickly preview your image with Peek & Pop when browsing Camera Roll photos in the app.
  • Fixed: Issue that lead to a potential crash.
  • Improved: Various bugs and issues.
Lightroom mobile 2.2 is available immediately for iPhones and iPads from the App Store.

From Adobe:

We are excited to announce that over 100,000 native 4K video assets have been added to our ever-growing content collection on Adobe Stock. The collection already includes over one million video assets and over 45 million images and graphics.

4K is increasingly becoming the new standard for video production, and demand for higher resolution content, sometimes referred to as UHD, is growing quickly. For precision post-production work, 4K provides significantly more image detail than HD, giving you options you wouldn’t have at lower resolutions. 4K gives you the room to crop, reframe, pan, or add camera moves and effects to your footage, even if your final output will be in HD or 2K resolution.

Adobe Stock 4K content is native, meaning that it was shot in 4K or, in the case of computer-generated media, rendered in 4K, which offers more precise edges when creating mattes or for other compositing tasks.

Adobe Stock video content is available for licensing on stock.adobe.com and can also be searched and purchased directly from the Creative Cloud Libraries panel in Premiere Pro CC and After Effects CC and from there dragged directly into an open project. Whether you need video clips for corporate or commercial use in videos, commercials, television shows or websites, Adobe Stock will have the video content you need.

These new 4K assets are available today for $199.99. While standard license terms apply, there is no limitation to the number of impressions. (HD versions of the 4K clips are available for $79.99).

We can’t wait to see what you make with Adobe Stock.

Adobe Stock assets are accessible via the Creative Cloud Libraries panel in Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC, InDesign CC, Premiere Pro CC, After Effects CC, and Dreamweaver CC.

Adobe has released its latest version of Camera RAW which includes a fix for the Sigma 50 ART misidentification bug as well as a new Boundary Warp feature. [Sean]

From Adobe:

Camera Raw 9.4 is now available through the update mechanism in Photoshop CC and the Creative Cloud application.

As mentioned in an update to our camera support policy here, Camera Raw 9.4 is only available in Photoshop CC or later. Customers using older versions of Photoshop can utilize the DNG Converter for continued camera support.

Introducing Boundary Warp

Stitched panoramas often have non-rectangular boundaries. There are several ways to handle irregular boundaries. The most common approach is to apply a rectangular crop. This is straightforward, but important image details near the boundary may be lost due to cropping. Another approach is to use Content Aware Fill (in Photoshop) to fill in the transparent areas outside the boundary. This can be effective, but may require multiple attempts to obtain a satisfying (smooth, artifact-free) result. It can also be expensive and requires rendering out the panorama to an output-referred format. Boundary Warp is a feature that provides another approach to handling the irregular boundary of panoramas. The feature analyzes the boundary and warps the image so that its edges fit a rectangular frame. Here’s a visual example of the feature:

Adobe Camera RAW Boundary Warp.gif

New Camera Support in Camera Raw 9.4

  • Fujifilm X70
  • Fujifilm X-E2S
  • Fujifilm X-Pro2
  • Leica M (Typ 262)
  • Leica X-U (Typ 113)
  • Panasonic DMC-ZS60 (DMC-TZ80, DMC-TZ81, DMC-TZ85)
  • Phase One IQ150
  • Sony ILCA-68 (A68)
Additional Updates in Camera Raw 9.4

  • Nikon 1 J4 Camera matching profile support added
  • The panorama merging process should complete roughly twice as fast as ACR 6.3
  • Improved quality when applying Auto Straighten and Upright “Level” mode.
  • Metadata is added to merged panoramas to support Photoshop’s Adaptive Wide Angle filter
  • DNG Converter 9.4 now supports HiDPI displays on Mac

When posting my latest image to Flickr, I noticed that the EXIF shows that I took the image using the Zeiss Milvus 50mm f/1.4 lens.

Sigma 50mm f 1.4 Art Misidentified as Zeiss Milvus 50 f 1.4 Lens

However, the image was actually taken using the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art lens.

"Hmm...," I thought to myself, "We have a problem here."

I did a little investigating and traced the incorrect lens identification bug back to the latest version of Adobe Camera RAW (v.9.3.1). It seems that ACR is misidentifying images taken with the Sigma 50mm Art. This bug will be especially problematic for those who use automatic lens profile corrections when importing RAW images into both Adobe Photoshop CC and Lightroom CC as the wrong lens profile will be applied.

To counteract the issue, when using the Sigma 50mm Art be sure to manually choose the Sigma 50mm f1.4 DG HSM A014 lens profile from the drop down list if a correction profile is desired. Also note that images saved and converted by Photoshop will display the incorrect lens in the EXIF even if no lens profile correction is applied.

Update: Adobe has let us know that they are aware of the issue and that it will be fixed in the next release of Adobe Camera RAW.

Adobe has released an update to Photoshop CC that addresses a few bugs introduced by the previous update released at the beginning of this month, most notably an issue with the Liquify tool which produced improper results with 16-bit files and GPU acceleration enabled.

I'm actually pretty surprised by how quickly Adobe was able to release this update. With record breaking revenue bolstering their bottom line (largely due to the popularity of Creative Cloud), it looks like Adobe is funneling their resources accordingly to address issues quickly and keep customers happy (like me). Simply use the Creative Cloud application to update Photoshop CC to version 2015.1.1.

Adobe's Creative Cloud Photography Plan (USD$9.99 per month) includes Lightroom CC across desktop, web and mobile, Photoshop CC and Photoshop Mix (for iPhone and iPad).

From the Adobe Lightroom Journal:

We’re excited to announce an update to Lightroom for iOS just in time for the holidays! This new version adds a bunch of new features, including:

  • iPad Pro support and support for iOS 9’s multitasking capabilities
  • Point Curve mode for the Tone Curve and the Split Tone adjustments tool
  • Support for 3D touch and a new widget to launch the Adobe built-in camera from the iOS Notification Center
  • New shoot-through presets in the Adobe built-in camera, and more.
The launch of the iPad Pro has gotten us all pretty excited at Adobe. The ability to take such a powerful and yet compact device on the road with us, and the new opportunities it offers, has gotten us thinking about what new possibilities we can add into Lightroom for mobile. In this release, we optimized the app to work on an iPad Pro and to also support the multitasking functionality new in iOS 9. On iPads and iPad Pros, Lightroom for iOS 2.1 enables both the Slide Over functionality so that you can quickly interact with other apps without having to switch apps as well as Split View so that you can run two apps at once, such as reading a tutorial while working within Lightroom.

We are constantly working to make Lightroom for mobile more and more powerful, and this update adds in both the Point Curve mode for the Tone Curve tool, as well as the Split Toning adjustment tool. With the Point Curve mode, you can have full control over the curve, as well as direct access to each of the color channels. This level of control previously has only been available in our desktop apps, so we’re pretty excited that now you can really tweak your images anywhere. The Split Toning tool makes it possible to add a different tint or tone to both the highlights and shadows of your photo. This effect is great both creating artistic and stylistic enhancements with color photos, something that we’ve seen become a lot more popular recently, or to recreate an effect that was more traditionally used in black and white photography.

Since we’re often using our mobile devices on the go, we’re always looking for ways to make it easier and faster to work with Lightroom for iOS. The 3D touch functionality introduced with the iPhone 6s and the iPhone 6s Plus opened up a new realm of possibilities for speeding up interaction. With Lightroom for iOS 2.1, you can use 3D touch on the home screen to open the camera directly or in the collection view to Peek and Pop an image, to quickly check which image you’d like to edit before moving into the Loupe view. Lightroom for iOS 2.1 also adds a Notification Center widget that lets you quickly open the camera found within Lightroom for mobile. In Lightroom for mobile 2.0 we added in a brand-new camera experience, built from the ground up to provide powerful new capture experiences.

In version 2.1, we’ve added in a new exciting feature that lets you preview and capture images in real-time with a preset applied. These presets take full advantage of the full processing abilities of Lightroom and apply their enhancements non-destructively. This means you can see what your photo will look like with the preset applied before you capture it, capture the photo with the preset already applied, and then adjust or even remove the effect from the photo, all without losing any quality along the way. And of course, the original image and the edits are synchronized with your other mobile devices, Lightroom on the web, and Lightroom on your Mac or PC. These shoot-through presets are one of the first ways we’ve made the Adobe in-app camera within Lightroom for mobile a truly unique and powerful experience, and we’re just getting started.

In addition to all of these major new features, we’ve added a bunch of little enhancements and improvements throughout the app. We’re continuing to work hard to come up with new, fun features that make mobile photography even more enjoyable, and look forward to sharing those new features with you in the new year.

For now though, download Lightroom for iOS 2.1 for your iPhone or your iPad and have a happy holiday and wonderful new year!
