Nikon has released its 1Q financial results for the fiscal year ending March 2020.

Nikon 1Q of the Year Ending March 2020 Financial Results

From the presentation notes:

FY2020/3 Q1 Actual

  • Revenue and Operating profit dropped ¥24.0B and ¥9.7B, respectively, YoY due to sales volume reduction in entry/mid DSLR cameras and FPD lithography systems, etc.
  • Q1 OP resulted in ¥9.3B, 51% down YoY, yet proceeding accordingly to the full-year forecast.
  • Buy-back of 6,667,200 shares was conducted at approx. ¥10.0B from May 10 to June 20, 2019, which accounts for approx. 1.7% of the outstanding shares.

Q1 YoY Change:

  • The unit sales of the high-end full-frame camera increased mainly in Europe and US thanks to a growth in sales of ML camera. However, revenue dropped, impacted largely by the reduced sales of entry/mid DSLR cameras in Asia including China.
  • In addition to the sales impact above, the initial development cost for new ML camera lenses suppressed the profit.

The operating profit for Nikon's Imaging Business fell 15% year-over-year.

  • The sales volume and revenue of fullframe cameras grew two years in a row
  • The sales of interchangeable lens type cameras and interchangeable lenses did not reach the plan in the continuing severe condition in Q4: ¥8.9B short of the forecast

Operating Profit: ¥8.2B down YoY

  • OP for FY18/3 and FY19/3 was ¥36.0B and ¥22.6B, respectively, if excluding restructuring relevant expenses
  • Revenue/profit reduction and the initial development cost increase pushed down the OP by ¥3.0B from the forecast

Nikon 3Q of the Year Ending March 2019 Financial Results

Notes from the Presentation Material:

  • Imaging Products Business decreased its revenue (down 3% from the previous quarter) due to declined sales volume of digital cameras.
  • Year-over-year revenue in the imaging business was down 22%.
  • High-end camera sales was brisk thanks to the new [mirrorless] launch, but fierce competitions in the shrinking entry/mid-range DSLR markets suppressed the volume largely in addition with the initial cost, resulting in revenue/profit reductions.

Nikon has released its financial results for Q1 2019 for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2019. The operating profit in their Imaging division has grown from Q1 last year and Nikon attributes that growth to the following:

  • While the DSLR market shrinks significantly due to expansion of ML cameras, the D850 is still highly evaluated even after a year from its launch: exceeding the sales forecast in all regions and the product mix has been improved.
  • Decrease in expenses such as marketing purposes, and defer of advertisement expense, resulting in increase of operating profit.

Interestingly enough, while Nikon forecasts an 11.3% reduction in Imaging Products revenue for the fiscal year, it's projecting an increase in operating profit of ¥2.8 billion yen (approx. $25 million USD) year-over-year.
