My COOLPIX camera battery will not charge - Firmware Updates available

How to identify the camera battery not charging
The cameras listed below are all designed to charge the battery in-camera by connecting an AC adapter to the cameras USB connector. If the battery is fully exhausted due to a long period of inactivity, sometimes the battery can fail to charge. With the AC adapter connected to the cameras USB connector the battery charge lamp will flash green if charging is in progress. If charging is not possible the battery charge lamp will not light at all.

The battery charge lamp is usually located on the back of the camera indicated with a charge/flash symbol.

Camera Firmware Updates available
Nikon have released camera Firmware Updates for the following affected COOLPIX cameras. We recommend performing the update as soon as possible to avoid this problem should your camera not be used for long periods.

Important Note
Make sure the battery is fully charged before perfoming a Firmware Update, alternatively power the camera from an AC adapter unit. If you perform the update with a battery which is not fully charged the camera may stop working during update which will cause further problems.

My camera has no power, I can't update the Firmware!
If your camera will not charge the battery, try the following workarounds which may recover the situation enough to allow the battery to continue charging.

Remove the memory card from the camera and then reconnect the AC adapter to the cameras USB connector. In some cases the battery will now charge correctly.
A Nikon battery charger is available as an optional sales item for most COOLPIX cameras. If you have access to an external Nikon battery charger, remove the battery from the camera and charge it in the battery charger. In some cases this may start to charge the battery correctly. If these measures fail to charge the camera battery, contact the Nikon Support Centre for further advice.

Press the camera's MENU button and select Network > Options > Firmware version from the setup menu. The WT-4's firmware version will be displayed.
Turn off the UT-1 and the camera.

Camera settings can now be viewed and changed using the WR-1 when the WR-1 is used as a transmitter and the WR-R10 is connected to a D7100 for use as a receiver.
Support for the Release Hold Time function built into the WR-1 is now supported when the WR-1 is used as a transmitter and the WR-R10 is used as a receiver.
To make remote operation using the WR-1 function that allows for division of multiple units into groups (A, B, C, D) more convenient, the group specified with the WR-R10 is now fixed at group A rather than all groups (A, B, C, D) with transmission. With reception, the group is fixed at group A with firmware versions 1.00 and 2.00.
The following cameras can be used at this time to upgrade the WR-R10 firmware: D7100

Only the camera(s) indicated above can be used to upgrade WR-R10 firmware. Firmware updates can also be perfomed for you at Nikon service centers.

Confirming the firmware version

Connect the WR-R10 to a camera
Turn on the camera
Press the camera's MENU button and select Firmware version from the setup menu.
The WR-R10's firmware version will be displayed with a "W".
Turn off the camera.

Basic Upgrade instructions*

IMPORTANT - The firmware cannot be upgraded when Network> Network connection in the setup menu is set to ON. Be sure to set Network connection to OFF before attempting to upgrade the firmware.

Create a new folder with an appropriate name on your computer.
Choose the correct download below for the computer system you are using, and save the download to the folder created in step 1.
Run the downloaded file to create the folder titled D4Update, containing the following file: D4_0104.bin
Format an approved memory card in the camera, then remove .
Copy the D4_0104.bin file to the top level of the memory card using a memory card reader or similar device, do not copy the file into any folder on the memory card.
Insert memory card into the cameras memory card slot, and switch on.
Select Firmware Version from the setup menu and follow the instructions displayed to upgrade the camera's firmware.
DO NOT switch off the camera at any time during the update, doing so may result in the need for service.
After the upgrade is complete, trun the camera off and remove the memory card.
Check the cameras firmware version to be sure it completed.
Format memory card in camera for use.

Press the MENU button is shooting or playback mode, and tap Setup.
Drag the screen down until Firmware version is displayed, and then tap Firmware Version.
The camera's firmware version will be displayed.
Turn off the camera.

Quick Install Guide

This is the quick install guide.

Power the camera from AC adapter unit or use a fully charged battery.

Create a new folder with an appropriate name on your computer's hard drive.
Download the Windows (.EXE) or Macintosh (.DMG) file from the links at the bottom of this page to the folder created in step 1.
Run the downloaded file to create a folder called S800CUpdate which contains the firmware folder.
Use a card reader or similar device to copy the firmware folder to the root directory of a formatted SD memory card.

When an option that utilized the main command dial was selected for Custom Setting f15: Playback zoom, and an image was zoomed in or out with playback with certain settings applied, shooting shutter speed, aperture, and exposure compensation settings were sometimes changed. This issue has been resolved.

Support for the Mount Adapter FT1 has been added. The FT1 enables the use of Nikon F-mount NIKKOR lenses with the J1. Primary specifications are as follows:

Autofocusing is possible when AF-S lenses are used. However, focus mode must be set to AF-S (Single AF) and AF-area mode is fixed at Single-point with only the center focus point used.
The focus indicator (range finder) can be used with CPU lenses.
[P], [S], [A], and [M] exposure modes can be used with CPU lenses.
[A] and [M] exposure modes can be used with non-CPU lenses. Aperture is specified using the aperture ring on the lens.
Vibration reduction (VR) functions when VR lenses are used. Enable vibration reduction, or specify a setting, using switches on the lens.
Shooting in Motion Snapshot mode is only possible when focus has been acquired with an AF-S lens.
The Smart Photo Selector function cannot be used.

A Pixel mapping item has been added to the setup menu. Use this feature when unexpected bright spots are recorded in images. Please see the PDF addenda below.

Modifications enabled with firmware A:1.01 / B:1.01

• An error where the card may not have been recognized when some memory cards were used has been addressed.

• When Selective color from the retouch menu is performed on a picture taken with the image quality set to NEF (RAW)+JPEG and an image size of M or S, the edges of the image may not have changed color. This issue has been resolved.

• When Metering was set to Matrix metering, the exposure mode set to M (Manual), and the HDR exposure differential set to Auto, the exposure differential was fixed at a value equivalent to 2 EV. This has been changed to enable automatic adjustment of exposure differential so that it is appropriate for the scene

Nikon has posted D7000 Firmware Update 1.02 (USA) / (Europe).

Modifications enabled with this firmware upgrade, release date April 25, 2011

• Noise reduction processing is now performed with shutter speeds slower than 1 s (previously 8 s) when On is selected for Long Exp. NR in order to reduce the bright spots that occur with shooting of still images at slow shutter speeds.

• An issue that prevented the opening of movies recorded with the D7000 in certain movie editing software applications has been resolved.

• When the camera was connected to a television via the A/V cable and a movie was played back, playback was normal the first time but when the movie was played two or more times, the sound was played back at extremely low volume and seemed to play intermittently. This issue has been resolved.

• When white balance for RAW images created using the camera’s image overlay function was fine tuned with Capture NX 2 or ViewNX 2, the images acquired a magenta cast. This issue has been resolved.

• An issue that caused 0.00” to be displayed for heading information when the GP-1 GPS unit was connected to the camera has been resolved so that ---.-- is now displayed.

• When Viewfinder virtual horizon was the role assigned to the Fn button or the preview button and the applicable button was pressed, errors in the virtual horizon indicator were displayed. This issue has been resolved.

• The following errors in Help displays have been resolved.

Nikon D3100 Firmware v1.01

Nikon has posted D3100 Firmware v1.01 (Europe: Macintosh / Windows).

Modifications enabled with this firmware upgrade, release date January 25, 2011:

• A magenta tint was present at the bottom of still images captured at high sensitivities after shooting in live view mode or recording movies for an extended length of time. The occurrence of this magenta tint has been reduced.

• When images captured with continuous shooting in live view mode were played back, in some very rare cases, some of the images were not properly displayed. This issue has been resolved.

• When shooting in live view mode with AF-area mode set to Subject-tracking AF, in some very rare cases, the focus point slipped off the subject with autofocusing after the intended tracking subject had been selected. This issue has been resolved.

• When images edited using camera retouch functions were played back in calendar playback mode, they were assigned to dates based not on the date of capture, but rather the date on which they were edited. This issue has been resolved.

• When white balance for RAW images created using the camera’s image overlay function was fine tuned with Capture NX 2 or ViewNX 2, the images acquired a magenta cast. This issue has been resolved.

• A portion of the error message displayed when live view mode could not be initiated because the camera’s internal temperature was too high has been revised.

• When Noise reduction in the shooting menu is set to On, operation is as follows.

Processing to reduce noise is performed at all ISO sensitivity settings. Noise reduction is especially effective with shooting at high ISO sensitivities.

Processing to reduce noise is performed immediately after shooting in any of the situations noted below. While processing to reduce noise is performed, "Job nr" blinks in the viewfinder display. Shooting is not possible until "Job nr" is no longer displayed. The time required for noise reduction processing is roughly equal to the shutter speed used to capture the image.

• Shooting at shutter speeds slower than approximately 8 seconds

• Shooting at high ISO sensitivities when the internal temperature of the camera is high

• The Help information displayed for the Noise reduction item in the shooting menu has also been revised in accordance with these modifications.

Nikon Announces Planned Firmware Upgrade for D7000 DSLRFrom Nikon Europe:

Bright Spots that occur with D7000 Movie Recording

We have received reports from some users of the Nikon D7000 digital SLR camera regarding the occurrence of noticeable bright spots with movie recording under certain conditions.

Nikon believes that these bright spots are not normally noticeable, and therefore do not indicate a problem with practical use. However, with further investigation of the reports received, we have confirmed that bright spots may be noticeable when recording movies of especially dark scenes or subjects.

In order to provide our customers with better products, Nikon is currently preparing to release a firmware upgrade with measures to reduce the occurrence of these bright spots for the D7000. Further details will be announced at a later date.
