Canon EOS 5D Mark III Firmware 1.2.1 Update Available

Firmware Version 1.2.1 incorporates the following functional improvements and fixes.

Uncompressed HDMI output is now enabled.
Enables the center AF point to autofocus when the camera is used with Canon EF lens/extender combinations whose combined maximum aperture is f/8.
Improves the speed of the camera's acquisition of focus when using a Canon Speedlite's AF-assist beam.
Fixes a phenomenon in which the LCD monitor may freeze and display Err 70 or Err 80 when a still photo is taken during Live View or in movie shooting mode.
Fixes a phenomenon that may occur when the continuous shooting priority setting is enabled for multiple exposures, such that, after the sixth image is taken, there is a slight pause before the remainder of the sequence is completed.
Fixes a phenomenon in which the viewfinder display shows incorrect information during AEB shooting.
Communication with the WFT-E7 Wireless File Transmitter has been improved.
When images have been successfully transferred with the WFT-E7 Wireless File Transmitter through the FTP protocol, an "O" will be displayed. When images have not been successfully transferred with the WFT-E7 Wireless File Transmitter through the FTP protocol, an "X" will be displayed.
Fixes a phenomenon in which the camera may not function properly when an Eye-Fi card is used.
Fixes a phenomenon in which the focal length value listed in the Exif information is not displayed correctly for images shot with the EF 24-70mm F4L IS USM lens.
Fixes a phenomenon in which the lens firmware cannot be updated properly.
Corrects errors in the Arabic language menu.
Fixes a phenomenon in which the camera changes the AF microadjustment value to -8.
Fixes a phenomenon in which the on-screen guidance cannot be fully displayed when setting the maximum limit value for the "Setting the ISO Speed Range for Auto ISO" option.

* Items No.1 through 12 have been incorporated into firmware version 1.2.0.
* Items No.1 through 14 have been incorporated into firmware version 1.2.1.

Firmware Version 1.2.1 is for cameras with firmware version 1.2.0 or earlier. If the camera's firmware is already version 1.2.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

Notes:

Once the EOS 5D Mark III camera is updated to version 1.2.1, it cannot be restored to a previous firmware version (Version 1.0.7 through 1.1.3).
It is recommended that the latest application software*1 be used, once the EOS 5D Mark III is updated to the new firmware version 1.2.1 from older firmware (versions 1.0.7 through 1.1.3). Certain previous versions of these applications do not support functions which are added by the new firmware.
In order to use EOS Utility software with the updated EOS 5D Mark III, the EOS Utility software must be updated to the latest version.

When cameras, or images taken with cameras, have been updated to the new Firmware Version 1.2.1 (or 1.2.0), and are used with the old version application software, the following phenomena will occur.

EOS Utility

The "HDMI output" function, "HDMI output setting" or "HDMI output frame rate setting" cannot be registered to My Menu of the camera.
The lens aberration compensation data cannot be registered to the camera.

Digital Photo Professional

If the Lens Aberration Correction Window is chosen when working with a RAW image taken with a camera running Firmware Version 1.2.1 or 1.2.0, the adjustment window will automatically shut down and the adjustment (correction) cannot be made.
Due to the differences in the camera firmware versions, the following phenomena will occur.

RAW images taken with a Firmware Version 1.2.1 (or 1.2.0) camera cannot be processed on cameras with Firmware Version 1.1.3 or before.
When images taken with a camera running Firmware Version 1.2.1 (or 1.2.0), are read by a camera running Firmware Version 1.1.3 or older, Direct print is not possible.

RAW images taken with a Firmware Version 1.2.1 (or 1.2.0) camera cannot be processed on cameras with Firmware Version 1.1.3 or before.
When images taken with a camera running Firmware Version 1.2.1 (or 1.2.0), are read by a camera running Firmware Version 1.1.3 or older, Direct print is not possible.

Accompanying the enhancements to the functions, the instruction manual has also been revised. Users are asked to download both the latest firmware and the instruction manual. You can download the latest instruction manual from our Web site.

Canon EOS 6D Firmware Version 1.1.3 Released

Firmware Version 1.1.3 incorporates the following fix:

1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the Date/Time/Zone settings screen appears on the LCD display, after the user has already configured these settings. The values for the Date/Time settings may reset if the backup functions which retain those values do not perform properly.

Even if the camera does not exhibit this phenomenon currently, it may in the future. Accordingly, we recommend that you update the Firmware in the camera to version 1.1.3 as soon as possible.

Firmware Version 1.1.3 is for cameras with firmware up to version 1.1.2. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.1.3, it is not necessary to update the firmware. Before downloading the firmware update for your camera, please review the instructions thoroughly.

Changes
Firmware Version 1.1.3 incorporates the following fix.
- Corrects the phenomenon where date/time settings reset.

After the firmware has been updated please perform the following action:
Leave a fully charged LP-E6 Battery Pack inside the camera for at least an hour. This will recharge the backup function control and the issue should not repeat itself again.

If the fully charged LP-E6 Battery Pack is left inside the camera for less than an hour the issue may occur again.

Firmware Version 1.1.3 is for cameras with firmware version 1.1.2. If the camera's firmware is already Version 1.1.3, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

When updating the firmware the custom settings for "1: All by same amount" in custom functions (C. Fn II - 9) [AF Microadjustment] will be reset.

If you have this custom setting in place, please set it again after the firmware update.

When updating the firmware of your camera, please first go over the instructions thoroughly before you download the firmware.

How to Identify Cameras eligible for the Firmware Update:
Please check the serial number on the bottom of the camera. This firmware update is for products with the following serial numbers.

Products whose sixth digit from the left is "4" or less [*****4******]

Products with eligible serial numbers that contain a blue marking inside the battery cover near the hinge have had this firmware update already applied.

Canon EOS 6D Firmware Version 1.1.2 Released

Canon EOS 6D Firmware Version 1.1.2 is now available for download.

Firmware Version 1.1.2 includes the countermeasures addressing a phenomenon which prevents movie files shot using Canon EOS 6D Digital SLR cameras from being played back on YouTube.

Movies shot when the camera was running firmware version 1.0.9 cannot be played back on YouTube, even after the firmware has been updated to 1.1.2. In order to playback these movies on YouTube (movies captured when the camera was running firmware version 1.0.9) please follow the instructions below.

Download the movie file(s) from the EOS 6D camera to your computer.
Start ImageBrowser EX, an application bundled with the EOS 6D.
After selecting the movie file(s) to be uploaded, select [Edit Movies] in the [Edit] tab from the menu bar of ImageBrowser EX.
“MovieEdit Task” will start. Save the movie using the [Save] menu on the screen.
Upload the saved movie to YouTube.
The movie can be played back on YouTube.

Uncompressed HDMI Output Support

In-Depth Look at Canon EOS 1D X Firmware Version 1.1.1 - EF 70-300 L Officially Not Extender Compatible

The Canon Digital Learning Center has published an article on the just-released Canon EOS 1D X firmware version 1.1.1.

As I expected would be Canon's position on the question, the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L IS USM Lens is officially not compatible with the Canon EF 1.4x III Extender.

As discussed here, the 70-300 L was initially included in the 1D X's f/8 AF-capable lens and extender combination list on the new Canon 1D X special firmware page. This lens is no longer included on that page - and is not included on the CDLC firmware in-depth page's compatibility list.

The EOS-1D X will now be capable of AF point illumination during AI Servo AF and cross-type AF for maximum apertures as small as f/8. AF Point Illumination During AI Servo AF
To support the needs of wedding, portrait, sports, wildlife, and theatrical performance photographers working in low light, the new firmware allows AF points in the EOS-1D X's viewfinder to be illuminated in red when the shutter button is pressed halfway during AI Servo AF, for easy viewing of the selected point. This valuable feature will enhance the photographers' ability to aim the camera accurately in low-light conditions, and when photographing dark subjects. To preserve exposure-metering accuracy, illumination is intermittent, not continuous. Three choices will be selectable from the menu system - Non-illuminated, Illuminated (Normal) and Illuminated (Brighter).

Cross-Type AF Support at f/8
The EOS-1D X is equipped with an innovative 61-point High Density Reticular AF System featuring up to 41 cross-type AF points, depending on the lens in use. The cross-type AF points recognize a wide variety of subject matter, making them highly desirable for maximum autofocus performance. Until now, cross-type AF on the EOS-1D X has been limited to EF lenses and lens/extender combinations with a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or larger. The new firmware allows cross-type autofocusing with the center AF point even when the maximum aperture of a Canon EF lens/extender combination becomes as small as f/8. Ideal for wildlife photographers and others who often use EF super-telephoto lenses with extenders, this new feature greatly expands the range of EF lens/extender combinations that support autofocus when used with the EOS-1D X.

If AF point expansion is selected with an f/8 maximum aperture lens/extender combination, the four AF points surrounding the center point will act as AF Assist points. This option effectively expands the size of the AF detection area to enhance autofocus performance with subjects that are small in the frame and difficult to track, such as small animals and birds in flight. AF points above and below the center will be sensitive to vertical contrast, while points to the left and right will be sensitive to horizontal contrast.

Canon EOS 7D Firmware Version 2.0.3 Released

Canon has made EOS 7D firmware version 2.0.3 available for download.

Firmware Version 2.0.3 incorporates the following fixes.

Fixes a phenomenon in which the camera stops working when the auto power off setting takes effect.
Fixes a phenomenon in which the maximum number of images that can be captured in a burst may be less than the actual number displayed in the viewfinder.
Corrects some errors in the message displayed on the LCD screen when saving RAW images developed in the camera (these errors do not appear in the Japanese and Korean language displays.)

The fixes listed above are corrections for the phenomena experienced with firmware version 2.0.0. These phenomena will not occur in firmware version 1.2.5 or before.

Does Your Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens Need the Firmware Update?

Unless you very recently purchased your Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM Lens, the answer to this question is probably "Yes". But, Canon Japan has published a serial number key to reliably determine that your EF 40m STM Lens needs the v1.2.0 Firmware Update.

If the third digit in the serial number is a 0, 1 or 2, the firmware update is needed:

xx0xxxxxxx, xx1xxxxxxx, xx2xxxxxxx

Otherwise, firmware version 1.2.0 or later has already been installed in the lens.

Important Update (thanks Andy): "For the following post that you made, I just wanted to make sure you're aware that a lot of people are having issues updating their firmware. It would update and then get stuck at around 66% or sometimes even jumps to close to 3000% and hang. Users have no choice but to remove the battery and then try again but it would constantly fail and brick the lens. The solution to this is to clear all the registered batteries from the camera and to try and update with a full battery. Not sure why this is but it's been working for a lot of people, including me."

Major Firmware Update for Canon EOS 7D Now Available

Canon has released EOS 7D firmware version 2.0.0.

This is a SIGNIFICANT firmware upgrade that all 7D owners will want to take advantage of.

Firmware Version 2.0.0 incorporates the following improvements, new functions, and fixes.

Improves the maximum burst in continuous shooting.
JPEG Large/Fine: About 94 (126) bursts *1 -> About 110 (130) bursts *2

NOTE:

-If the camera is updated with Firmware Version 2.0.0, the following settings will be initialized.
a) Date/Time setting
b) Lens peripheral illumination correction data registered to the camera

-The Version 2.0.0 firmware being released this time is for cameras with firmware up to Version 1.2.5. If the camera's firmware is already Version 2.0.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

-Once the camera is updated to Version 2.0.0, it cannot be restored to a previous firmware version (Version 1.0.7 to Version 1.2.5).

-When using an EOS 7D camera updated to the new firmware Version 2.0.0 with the WFT-E5A/B/C/D, the WFT-E5A/B/C/D needs to be updated to the latest firmware Version 1.0.7; otherwise, it cannot be used.

-It is recommended that you use the updated EOS 7D camera (Version 2.0.0) with the latest applications*3 . Some applications of previous versions do not support functions that are added by the new firmware. Please also note that EOS Utility needs to be updated to the latest version before it can be used with the updated EOS 7D camera. You can download the latest applications from our Web site.

Canon has released a firmware update for EF300mm f/2.8L IS II USM, EF400mm F2.8L IS II USM, EF500mm f/4L IS II USM and EF600mm f/4L IS II USM lenses. This firmware update will be performed by Canon Service Centers. Please contact us using the contact information listed at the bottom of this page.

Firmware changes:

Firmware Version 1.1.1 incorporates the following enhancement:

1. Changes the control algorithm of the focus drive, and enhances the drive’s responsiveness for more precise focus and adjustments. In particular, the new firmware enhances the AI servo AF capability of the lenses to track objects that move irregularly in sports events, such as soccer or rugby.

Affected Products:

Firmware Version 1.1.1 is for lenses with Firmware Version 1.0.0. If the lens’ firmware is already Version 1.1.1, it is not necessary to update the firmware. The serial numbers (10 digits) of the lenses equipped with Firmware Version 1.0.0 are as follows:

EF300mm f/2.8L IS II USM:

The third digit in the serial number is either 0, 1, 2, or 3 (xx0xxxxxxx, xx1xxxxxxx, xx2xxxxxxx, xx3xxxxxxx).

EF400mm f/2.8L IS II USM:

The third digit in the serial number is either 0, 1, 2, or 3 (xx0xxxxxxx, xx1xxxxxxx, xx2xxxxxxx, xx3xxxxxxx).

EF500mm f/4L IS II USM

The third digit in the serial number is 0 (xx0xxxxxxx).

EF600mm f/4L IS II USM

The third digit in the serial number is 0 (xx0xxxxxxx).

Lenses with serial numbers other than those listed above are equipped with Firmware Version 1.1.1 or later.

Canon Japan has today announced that a firmware update, version 1.1.1, will be (or has been) released for the following lenses:

Firmware Version 1.1.1 will incorporate the following improvements

NEW FIRMWARE ENHANCES FUNCTIONALITY OF EOS 7D DIGITAL SLR

Free Update Increases Buffer Capacity to 25 RAW Images,

Adds In-Camera RAW Processing and Many Other New Features

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., June 28, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced a firmware update for the EOS 7D Digital SLR camera that adds new functionality to improve its performance for serious photographers and semi-professional users. The update, free to all EOS 7D owners, gives the camera more advanced shooting options, including an increase in the maximum number of burst images taken in the RAW file format (from 15[i] frames to 25[ii] frames) as well as the ability to process RAW image files directly in the camera and the option to set a maximum ISO setting in ISO Auto mode. The firmware also adds the ability to adjust up to 64 audio levels manually prior to recording video, supports custom file naming, and allows for compatibility with Canon’s newly introduced, optional GPS Receiver GP-E2.

“By introducing this firmware we want our customers to know that we are always looking to enhance the user experience for all of our current products in the marketplace,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Imaging Technologies & Communications Group, Canon U.S.A. “The latest firmware for the EOS 7D Digital SLR enhances the capabilities of the camera and brings new possibilities to its users, making it a more valuable tool for their craft.”

Enhancing the Imaging and Audio Capabilities

For budding action photographers who use the EOS 7D as their camera of choice, being able to capture the perfect shot comes down to a matter of milliseconds. The EOS 7D is capable of taking photos at a high-speed burst rate of up to 8 frames per second (fps). With the firmware installed the camera captures up to 25 consecutive frames when shooting in RAW and up to 17[iii] consecutive frames when taking RAW+JPEG images.

Once the firmware is installed the EOS 7D will also be able to process RAW images directly in the camera, allowing dynamic adjustment of exposure compensation, white balance, picture style, noise reduction at high ISO speeds, distortion correction, and other processing parameters. For mobile photographers, this ability to adjust RAW images quickly and re-save them as JPEG files can be a huge time-saver as opposed to downloading files to a computer and making adjustments later. The camera will also be able to re-size JPEG image files in-camera. These features will be accessible through the Quick Control functions which will be accessible while the camera is in playback mode. When viewing images on the camera, image files can also be given a star ranking for easy sorting during post processing. The firmware will also enable faster scrolling of images when displayed in a magnified view on the camera’s LCD screen.

The new firmware enables photographers to have more control over the maximum ISO speed when the camera is in ISO Auto mode by setting a maximum ISO range. In certain low-light scenarios, such as during a sunset, where light changes each minute, photographers can lose the brilliance and color if the ISO setting is too high. Now, photographers can ensure their ISO setting will remain within specific parameters allowing them to concentrate on the moment, knowing that they will achieve the desired photographic results. The firmware also adjusts the available ISO Auto range, previously 100-3200 and now ISO 100-6400.

In addition to these enhancements, the new EOS 7D firmware enables manual adjustment of audio levels prior to recording video, similar to the functionality found on the EOS 5D Mark II. Videographers can now manually adjust up to 64 audio levels on the EOS 7D so that they can refine the captured audio to match their particular needs.

Similar to the new EOS 5D Mark III, a new submenu provided with the EOS 7D firmware update enables photographers to modify the first four characters of file names, in the camera. This valuable feature makes it easier to use the EOS 7D camera in multi-camera shooting situations by providing a way to identify the files coming from a particular camera without opening each image individually.

Canon GPS Compatibility

The new firmware adds full compatibility for the EOS 7D with Canon’s GPS Receiver GP-E2. This GPS Receiver can be mounted to the camera’s accessory shoe or clipped to a belt and tethered via a USB cable. The GP-E2 was created to serve outdoor photographers; it records shooting locations including latitude, longitude and altitude, as well as camera direction. The camera’s internal clock can now synced through the GPS unit using UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), the primary standard by which time is regulated, for accurate time recording or syncing clocks on multiple cameras. A GPS Logging function can display the photographer’s route on a map, using supplied software.

Firmware Version 1.1.1 incorporates the following fixes and improvements.

Fixes a phenomenon where the camera's serial number that is displayed in the shooting information of the image does not display the correct serial number. *1)
Corrects errors in the Greek, Italian, and Portuguese menu screens.

*1) If the camera's serial number is 2147483648 or higher and the camera firmware is Version 1.1.0 or earlier, the images captured with the camera will be affected by the phenomenon listed in 1. above. This phenomenon only affects the EOS 60D, and does not affect the EOS 60Da. Both of these cameras are equipped with the same firmware. To obtain the serial number correctly in the shooting information of images that are already captured using the old firmware, we are preparing updates for Digital Photo Professional and ZoomBrowser EX /ImageBrowser applications. 6. Corrected some mistakes in the menu screens displayed in Arabic and Portuguese. (This applies to models in overseas markets. The models for the Japanese market do not display those languages.)

Firmware Version 1.0.9 incorporates the following fixes and changes.

1. Changes the name of the feature called "Art Filters" to "Creative Filters" (which is used in markets other than Japan) in the Japanese version to make the terms consistent. (This change only applies to the Japanese version and does not apply to other language versions.)

2. Fixes a phenomenon where the camera may operate abnormally when it is set to Quick Mode AF during Live View shooting immediately after capturing an image with the C.Fn II-1 Long exposure noise reduction setting set to [2: On] and a shutter speed setting of 5 seconds or more.

3. Fixes a phenomenon where the camera may operate abnormally when after Live View shooting, the remote switch on the EOS Utility screen is pressed to immediately start movie-shooting. Canon has posted EOS 5D Mark II Firmware Version 2.0.7

This firmware update (Version 2.0.7) incorporates the following improvements and fixes.

1. Fixes a phenomenon in which the aperture exhibits abnormal movement when shooting movies in manual exposure mode and Aperture Priority AE (Av mode) using some Canon lenses (such as macro lenses).

2. Fixes a phenomenon in which the exposure level shown in the LCD panel differs from what is shown in the viewfinder when shooting still images in manual exposure mode.

3. Fixes a phenomenon in which the Wireless File Transmitter (WFT-E4 or WFT-E4 II) may not automatically power off when used for FTP transfers.

These phenomenon only occur with the Version 2.0.4 and Version 2.0.3 firmware.

The Version 2.0.7 firmware being released this time is for cameras with firmware up to Version 2.0.4. If the camera's firmware is already Version 2.0.7, it is not necessary to update the firmware.
