ISO 12233 resolution chart results for the Canon EOS 6D DSLR Camera and Canon EF 200mm f/2 L IS USM Lens are now available on the site.

With these results, many comparisons can be made, but the Canon EOS 6D and 5D Mark II comparison is the one I wanted to see the most. While the 5D II holds a small megapixel advantage, the 6D delivers results that are at least as sharp.

In addition to the distortion, flare and vignetting results already found on the Canon PowerShot G1 X Digital Camera Review page, resolution results using the ISO 12233 chart are now available. These results need some explanation.

As I have said before, I do not feel that Canon's current version of Digital Photo Pro, version 3.11.31.0, is properly converting the G1 X RAW images when the "Viewing and saving RAW images" preference is set to "High quality". The problem appears identical to the problem we saw with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III when it first hit the streets. Canon fixed the 5D III issue quickly, but ... either disagrees with me that a problem exists - or has chosen to not make the G1 X fix a priority.

The G1 X ISO 12233 results show two samples being tested. In this case, both samples are from the same lens (and camera of course). Sample 1 images were processed at the "High speed" setting while sample 2 images were processed at the "High quality" setting (what I normally use). I feel that the sample 1 results best represent the sharpness of this camera, but have not processed any of my G1 X RAW images with hopes that Canon would give me the sharper results along the better-cleaned-up image quality that I expect "High quality" to deliver - in a DPP update.

This Canon EOS 1D X AFMA Bug update just in from John:

"With AF4 menu option Orientation Linked AF Point set to the default of Same for Both Vert/Horiz, behavior of the AFMA setting is normal. But, when it's set to Select Separate AF Points (which mine was), the AFMA zeroing out occurs."

"Simply changing that one setting from default 'breaks' the AFMA behavior ... and resetting that one setting to default restores the correct behavior."

Canon EOS 1D X AFMA Bug Workaround

A workaround for the Canon EOS 1D X AFMA Bug has been reported.

From the Canon EOS 1D X AFMA Bug forum thread:

Trowski:

John, try this - Enter an AFMA for an older lens (one without the serial number on the chip, like the 70-200 II), then power off the camera. Turn it back on, and the AFMA menu should show zero and the serial number will be zeroed out (though if you take a photo I'm willing to bet it will still show the adjustment you made). Now without powering off the camera, remove the lens and put it back on (or at least turn it enough so the contacts aren't touching). Go back into the AFMA menu. I'm willing to bet you'll see your adjustment value and the serial number.

John:

Trowski, you are a genius! It's kludgy, but it's a workaround. After doing so, it seems to persist for one power cycle, too. After doing that with my 70-200 II, I put on my 40/2.8, and it showed the previously set -2 straight off. Power cycling then zeroed it out again, but just loosening and remounting the lens with the power on brought the correct -2 back. Also, changing the AFMA then doing the workaround results in the new AFMA being applied, and restored after a repeat of the workaround, as long as you change the AFMA setting right after the lens unmount/remount, when the previous setting is visible.

Some (including Bryan, now) have reported this issue, others say they don't have the problem. Personally, I always power off the camera before changing lenses - I wonder ... if I routinely changed lenses with the camera powered on, would I not have noticed the issue? As stated above, the value seems to be saved, and recorded in the EXIF, just not displayed on-camera until it's forced to re-recognize the lens.

Canon EOS 1D X AFMA Bug Discovered

Friend NeuroAnatomist (AKA John) has pointed out a Canon EOS 1D X Autofocus MicroAdjustment bug:

"In the AFMA menu, when When Adjust by Lens is selected, powering off then on resets the setting (or W/T settings for a zoom lens) to zero, and also clears out a manually entered lens serial number. If I set it to All by Same Amount, the setting entered is retained...but, powering off actually changes the setting to Adjust by Lens, which is zeroed out. Even setting it to Disable and power cycling results in it being set to Adjust by Lens."

"The same reversions occur if the camera goes into standby mode - when it's woken up, the AFMA setting, regardless of where it was left, reverts to Adjust by Lens with the previously set value(s) zeroed out."

I have verified the issue with my 1D X. Expect a firmware update to resolve this bug.

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., June 28, 2012 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, announced a firmware update for the EOS 7D Digital SLR camera that adds new functionality to improve its performance for serious photographers and semi-professional users. The update, free to all EOS 7D owners, gives the camera more advanced shooting options, including an increase in the maximum number of burst images taken in the RAW file format (from 15[i] frames to 25[ii] frames) as well as the ability to process RAW image files directly in the camera and the option to set a maximum ISO setting in ISO Auto mode. The firmware also adds the ability to adjust up to 64 audio levels manually prior to recording video, supports custom file naming, and allows for compatibility with Canon’s newly introduced, optional GPS Receiver GP-E2.

Enhancing the Imaging and Audio Capabilities

For budding action photographers who use the EOS 7D as their camera of choice, being able to capture the perfect shot comes down to a matter of milliseconds. The EOS 7D is capable of taking photos at a high-speed burst rate of up to 8 frames per second (fps). With the firmware installed the camera captures up to 25 consecutive frames when shooting in RAW and up to 17[iii] consecutive frames when taking RAW+JPEG images.

Once the firmware is installed the EOS 7D will also be able to process RAW images directly in the camera, allowing dynamic adjustment of exposure compensation, white balance, picture style, noise reduction at high ISO speeds, distortion correction, and other processing parameters. For mobile photographers, this ability to adjust RAW images quickly and re-save them as JPEG files can be a huge time-saver as opposed to downloading files to a computer and making adjustments later. The camera will also be able to re-size JPEG image files in-camera. These features will be accessible through the Quick Control functions which will be accessible while the camera is in playback mode. When viewing images on the camera, image files can also be given a star ranking for easy sorting during post processing. The firmware will also enable faster scrolling of images when displayed in a magnified view on the camera’s LCD screen.

The new firmware enables photographers to have more control over the maximum ISO speed when the camera is in ISO Auto mode by setting a maximum ISO range. In certain low-light scenarios, such as during a sunset, where light changes each minute, photographers can lose the brilliance and color if the ISO setting is too high. Now, photographers can ensure their ISO setting will remain within specific parameters allowing them to concentrate on the moment, knowing that they will achieve the desired photographic results. The firmware also adjusts the available ISO Auto range, previously 100-3200 and now ISO 100-6400.

In addition to these enhancements, the new EOS 7D firmware enables manual adjustment of audio levels prior to recording video, similar to the functionality found on the EOS 5D Mark II. Videographers can now manually adjust up to 64 audio levels on the EOS 7D so that they can refine the captured audio to match their particular needs.

Similar to the new EOS 5D Mark III, a new submenu provided with the EOS 7D firmware update enables photographers to modify the first four characters of file names, in the camera. This valuable feature makes it easier to use the EOS 7D camera in multi-camera shooting situations by providing a way to identify the files coming from a particular camera without opening each image individually.

Canon GPS Compatibility

The new firmware adds full compatibility for the EOS 7D with Canon’s GPS Receiver GP-E2. This GPS Receiver can be mounted to the camera’s accessory shoe or clipped to a belt and tethered via a USB cable. The GP-E2 was created to serve outdoor photographers; it records shooting locations including latitude, longitude and altitude, as well as camera direction. The camera’s internal clock can now synced through the GPS unit using UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), the primary standard by which time is regulated, for accurate time recording or syncing clocks on multiple cameras. A GPS Logging function can display the photographer’s route on a map, using supplied software.

Canon Japan is stating "June 20, planned" for the arrival of this long awaited DSLR. Expect extremely limited quantities to be available for a long time. (thanks Kaz)

Both lenses are shipping now in the USA including from B&H and Adorama. But, supplies are extremely limited and only the earliest preorders are getting filled.

The bodies and with-18-55mm IS II Lens kits showed up at Amazon as I was typing this.

B&H lists the body and body w/ 18-55 II IS Lens as "Expected availability: June 18 2012".

Adorama is saying "Delivery scheduled to start June/18".

The Canon USA press release indicates that the Movie Kit bundle is expected at the end of June, but retailers are not listing the availability dates for this T4i version.

Reikan has been working on adding Canon EOS 5D Mark III compatibility to their Focal software and shared some information on their Facebook page on Friday.

Especially interesting to me was this paragraph:

"The AF consistency on the 5D Mark III is the *best* I have seen on any camera I've tested with (which is quite a few now!). And it's better by quite a long way - only a few % deviation across 20 shots compared to, say, the 1Dmk4 which deviates by 10-15%."

I'm still giving AI Servo a good workout, but the 5D III's One Shot AF has been very impressive. (thanks John)

Are Your Canon PowerShot G1 X RAW Images Soft?

Are Your Canon PowerShot G1 X RAW images soft? If so, I may know why.

G1 X RAW files, when processed by Canon Digital Photo Pro v3.11.10.0 with the "Viewing and savings RAW images" preference to "High quality" (the default), are rendered very soft.

This is the same problem I currently have outlined on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Review page. The G1 X RAW images are being affected by the same software flaw the 5D III images are affected by.

Canon has been notified. The workaround is to set the "Viewing and savings RAW images" preference to "High speed". Or use another RAW converter.

Updated: Canon EOS 5D Mark III and EF 200mm f/2 L Image Stabilization Noise

Canon USA has issued an official response to the 5D III IS noise issue:

“We have acknowledged that when using the camera with specific lenses, there is an abnormal noise during IS operation when the shutter button is pressed halfway (or remains pressed halfway), and we are now considering the countermeasures. We will let you know about the countermeasures as soon as they are finalized”

The two affected lenses are the Canon EF 200mm f/2.0 L IS USM Lens and the Canon EF 800mm f/5.6 L IS USM Lens.

Note that image quality is not affected by the abnormality. Also note that this noise does not occur during Live View including during video capture.

Strange Image Stabilization Noise from Canon EOS 5D Mark III-mounted Canon EF 200mm f/2.0 L IS USM Lens

Confirmed: The Canon EF 200mm f/2.0 L IS USM Lens' image stabilization system makes a modestly-disturbing churning sound when used on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III in AI Servo AF mode. The same sound is made briefly when the shutter release button is released in One Shot AF mode.

I do not know if this is a problem or not. IS appears to be working properly and the images created during the strange sound are quite sharp. I'll let Canon know (others may have already done so).

Clarification: The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is Delivering Very Sharp Images

I am getting a lot of email asking about the Canon EOS 5D Mark III and the image softness issue. Let me clarify what I'm seeing:

The Canon EOS 5D Mark III is Delivering Very Sharp Images

There is a softness issue, but it appears to be completely isolated to the Canon Digital Photo Pro software's "High quality" RAW conversion algorithm.

You can see the sharp 5D III images in DPP's quick viewer and in the Edit window with preferences set to High speed. The issue appears to be completely in DPP's High quality processing algorithm.

Canon has been in touch with me again this morning and appears very eager to resolve the problem. My personal expectation is that the problem resolution will be in the form of a DPP update. The 5D III appears to be fine from my perspective. I have no intentions of returning my camera - I'm having far too much fun with it.

More on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III and DPP Softness Issue

I've received lots of emails and have had more communication with Canon about the problem with Digital Photo Professional generating soft images from Canon EOS 5D Mark III RAW files.

There are currently two workarounds to this problem.

The first workaround involves changing the DPP "Viewing and saving RAW images" preference (in the "General settings" tab of the "Preferences" menu selection) from "High quality (recommended)" to "High speed". In High Speed mode, the noise reduction palette cannot be used and moiré correction is not performed, but 5D III images are rendered sharp. DPP's Quick Viewer (which displays 5D III images properly) displays images at high speed, so that this solution works is not surprising.

The second solution is to use a third party RAW converter - namely Adobe Camera Raw 6.7 RC. You can use ACR 6.7 RC to output DNG files for use in Lightroom 4 - which will not support the 5D III natively until a point release.

I do not plan to update the color block noise comparison on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Review page until Canon corrects the problem because I can see a difference between High Speed and High Quality in my 5D II images. You can too - look for the false color in the "5D II Quick View" example that is not present in the "5D II Edit Window" example currently on the 5D III review page.

My case with Canon remains open and has been escalated. I'll let you know when I learn anything new about the 5D III DPP softness problem. Thanks to everyone that contributed to this post.

I've been pouring many hours into adding a set of noise comparisons to the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Review page, but the road has been a rough one.

My first take is that the Canon EOS 5D Mark III is an awesome camera, but Canon's Digital Photo Pro software has made the road to showing you this a difficult one. Let me explain this further on the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Review page itself.
